  • "Needed a quick place for 6 for Sunday brunch, looking LATE on a Saturday night most of the other places in the South End had no tables, this place was wide open. Had some trepidation due to that but NO worries, this place was great. Nice ambiance, decent food, decent prices, good location. Not sure why others had posted bad reviews, but felt very fortunate to have found this place on short notice."

  • "I went to Union for my girlfriend's birthday and it was a really great dinner. Food and cocktails were fantastic. There was only one problem that happened at the very end. My entree was the Striped Bass and my very last bite had one big bone in it which stuck my the roof of my mouth. It would have been nice to have something taken off the bill for that but at the same time the meal itself otherwise, and everything else we ate were really delicious so I couldn't muster up being truly upset. But bones like that can't happen. It was just one last bite I wish did not have a bone it. Service was very good the whole night through and I am very sure we will return. Just keep an eye on those fish bones!"

  • "2nd time there in a month. The front of the house mgr remembered speaking with our table 1st time & was just as friendly as the 1st time. Server seemed a little overwhelmed by questions re- items on standard menu. Green salad delivered without beets (2nd ingredient in details of dish) & didn't know how to fix. Other mgr comes over, brings us missing ingredients, extra salad, & even a plate of berries at the end. Mgrs can't seem to do enough to make experience enjoyable - so that you want to come back. I guess trying to make up for server's inadequacy"

  • "Sunday brunch. The food changed recently with new chef. The burger, that I have loved for years, is gone. Lamb burger now, if you like lamb, you may give it a shot, I did not. My eggs were good, but they looked like I was at Mike's diner, one piece of toast, cut in half? Where is the second slice, I didn't order off of a skinny menu, & asked for sausage well done, had to send it back, they just don't listen. Staff there is reminiscent of a record store, where each person is kind of stuck in their genre, and don't empathize well with customers. Our last time here was a disaster, and yes, this time was much better. I think they overcompensated, and remembered our last experience, 9 mos. ago, it felt contrived and not sincere."

  • "I don't know who the Union is trying to attract but it won't be us anymore. Noisy, poor service (80 minutes to receive our entree?) and marginally good food. Once a favorite of ours is now a memory. Sorry. Too many others out there - nearby - to attract us."

  • "Six adults two toddlers for brunch...the staff from the host to our two servers couldnt have been nicer ..we had a lot of logistical issues getting parking etc but everyone at Union was really patient with us. so once we got underway the food was slow to come out as they had a large engagement party for which they had apologized for in advance (the host brought us a free serving of fries to tide us over!) ...the toddlers had eggs and they re=plated the eggs on to cold plates just for the kids ( I mean that is just so considerate)...and all of us got eggs omelets or bacon and eggs...really delicious I mean I dont know what they did to the eggs but they were special. We have been to Union many times and we will be back again"

  • "We have lost count the number of times we have been having brunch at Union. Its location was great for us, since we lived nearby. The food was great, can't beat the $10 brunch deal. The coffee cake has been disappointing everytime we come back, it lost the original flavor after the restaurant has been cutting back to make it more profitable. I wish they can keep the great ingredients and raise the price slightly to $12 or $15. Keep up with the great quality and lots of options for the special pre-fix price brunch for Saturdays please!"

  • "We had an excellent all around experience. The manager stopped by our table a few times checking on us. Our server was bubbly and provided a good experience. Food was all excellent. We'll be back!"

  • "We had a very nice meal here before going to the theater at the Boston Center for the Arts. Very fresh and interesting food with items like razor clams and foraged mushrooms. Nice wines, reasonably priced. Excellent cocktails. Good service."

  • "We were one out if three tables with patrons and dinner took three hours. The mussels had this off, unappetizing aftertaste. The duck rigatoni looked like bad swamp water. The masked potatoes were do overly greasy and ramp-y, I was looking forward to devoting the side, but could only bare two bites. I hope I don't get dragged back here again..."

  • "There were two of us. One of our meals was undercooked. The staff and manager made it right and took it off the bill. However, the parties at the tables next to us appeared to have similar issues at this restaurant. The food was very good but unfortunately we had a bad experience."

  • "I have gone to Union many times before for dinner, and have never been disappointed with the food. Today's brunch was also a reminder of their excellent service. Even when there was a slight mishap out of our server's and manager's (Nicole) control, they did everything above and beyond to make it right. It was a delicious and wonderful brunch experience!"

  • "The atmosphere and decor are nice but the food is lacking. Nothing exciting and nothing really stood out as delicious when my friends and I went for brunch. I had been one other time and thought it was a flukey bad experience but the second time proved that the food isn't spectacular. "

  • "The kitchen staff might have been tired after a long day. The menu was great, the food fair. We will give it one more try, but not happy with the food."

  • "We arrived on time for our reservation but the table was not available as several diners seemed to be lingering. The staff was apologetic and provided a little champagne to bridge the wait time. We had our two girls with us and one is a bit of picky eater. When she couldn't find anything on the menu she wanted, the staff helped out with a suggestion not on the menu that worked out well. This was definitely above and beyond good service. The food was excellent and the service was as well."

  • "Everything was great! The server was very nice, but he spoke very softly and we could barely hear anything he was saying. "

  • "The maitre d' was super friendly and welcoming. The table was small for three adults. The waitstaff was efficient but they fell short and didn't provide any insights. My beet salad appetizer was served as three tiny pieces of beet hidden under a pile of Mesclun, I had to send it back and asked for the real beet salad. The chef added 5 pieces of red and yellow beets - it became a good salad but not amazing. My colleagues had mussels that were served in garlic water. The main course, sole in parchment, was flaky and moist but blend and uninspiring. The wine was good for its price ($35) as it was a very young and slightly warm(?). The bill was $160 for three including the tip."

  • "I went with four friends for brunch and had a great time. The restaurant is comfortable, not too loud and the ambiance is laid back. Three of us had Bloody Mary's. When the waitress brought the Bloody Mary's you could smell the horseradish and knew they were going to have a kick. For some reason we all got the red flannel braised pork, two poached eggs, thyme jus & home fries. They don't tell you that it also has Brussels sprouts and beets in it. It was pretty bland and needed salt and pepper covering it to give it flavor. The crispy fried poached egg as bland, as were the popovers. We were all a bit disappointed with the food and left wishing we had tried something else. It was not the 4-5 stars I had read about online. Bit of a bummer."

  • "Brunch was average, service was affable , but delivery of the food was very slow, and some items came out Luke warm. Would not return for brunch. Much better options in Boston."

  • "Let me preface this review by saying that Union recognized that our service was less than satisfactory and took good care of us when it was time to pay. We sat down at an awkward 2-top next to another couple although there were a few booths available. They could barely get past us to pour water or deliver food, so we moved the table back a bit to save ourselves the trouble. Server comes over 10 minutes later, says hello and asks if we are ready to order. We order cocktails/brunch, and the table across from us (who sat after us) gets their cocktails first so I have to ask for ours. Sigh... 3. Food comes 20 mins later, and is delicious! My sausage is missing, I ask but it never comes. Better luck next time I have the free time to brunch!"

  • "Food was spectacular! Chorizo omelette was out of this world! Union was very accommodating. We were running a few minutes late from church and I had to add one member to our party. They were able to help! We had a great time and I can't wait to go back again."

  • "We went to Union a few years ago for dinner during restaurant week and had a great meal, so decided to take my parents there for Easter brunch. Service wasn't great - our waitress was good, but, we were brought someone else's food by a runner that was just left on the table and the guy walked away. My dad's breakfast was delivered with bacon instead of sausage, and dry toast with no butter. The waitress then brought over a side of sausage and some butter, and seemed annoyed that the kitchen hadn't gotten the order right. In addition, the breakfast looked a little sad on the plate - eggs, bacon, toast and home fries on a plate, but without any kind of garnish, not really filling the plate, no butter/jam. French toast was great."

  • "We agreed to meet a friend who was in town for a day at Union for dinner. We had reservations for three. By chance two other friends met up just as we were going to Union. They ventured to stay for a pre-dinner drink. When the out-of-town friend arrived at the reservation hour, Union staff went to extraordinary lengths to accommodate the reservation for 3 that now turned to 5. I was slightly surprised how easy the staff made this happen. No scolding or "these are our rules" remarks. Just a simple, "let me see what we can do." Impressive and customer friendly. The food was excellent, the service perfect. I commend the ownership for making an effort to make us feel valued. We will return. "

  • "We live out in the burbs, Sudbury to be exact, and find the Union Bar and Grille to be the best neighborhood restaurant in Boston. Great service, great food and great ambiance."

  • "We had not been for a while, and welcomed the changes to the menu, which tries to incorporate seasonal ingredients. Both of our entrees were very good. My wife had the duck and I had the rabbit pasta dish. The Brussels sprout side dish needed less maple syrup and more time in the oven. The roasted artichoke appetizer was not a hit. The outer leaves had the texture of cellulose and they were bitter. The charcuterie plate was somewhat unbalanced - too much liver mousse, too little sausage. Wine selection by the glass was very good. Service was attentive and seating was comfortable. We will be back."

  • "Union was the only place for brunch in the South End with an hour's notice. Lively atmosphere; good food. The only problem was that it took our food about 40 minutes to arrive; we weren't in a hurry but we were very hungry. Overall, good experience, but there are better restaurants in the neighborhood if you plan in advance."

  • "This was the second time I had been there in two weeks. Both times the food was extremely slow to come out of the kitchen. The waitstaff was attentive but that did not make up for the delay. Also, the food has gone downhill. I had brunch on the first visit and most of the food tasted as if it was pre-prepared and dried out. The second time was for dinner. I ordered venison. It was tough and tasteless. My husband's burger was overcooked."
