A word from Underbelly
Underbelly is the perfect title to tell "the Story of Houston Food", and when it comes to Houston, there is no better storyteller than Chef Chris Shepherd. Diner Reviews
  • "I would have to rate Underbelly as one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. There was such a vast array of beers and wine. The menu is small, but the food was simply amazing. The menu is always changing according to our waiter, but I would definitely go back and recommend all my friends to try this great place."

  • "I'd read a number of critics' rave reviews for Underbelly, so perhaps my expectations were too high. We loved the Korean braised goat & dumplings, and our server, while unable to answer a few questions about the food and their house-made root beer, was pleasant. We had to ask (and wait for) a wine list, then (wait and) ask about the Butcher's cut for the evening, then (wait and) ask for a knife to slice our sour dough bread. For the bread, we were told: "Oh, just tear a chunk off. We don't have knives to slice the bread." Service overall was slow and we were given very little information about the food. The sourdough bread, beet salad, lemongrass shrimp and Wagyu tri-tip were very good (beef cooked nicely), but none made us go "ooooh.""

  • "Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the Underbelly. It was very loud and the food was not to my liking. It arrived already semi-cold and the salad I had ordered did not have any dressing, tasting like grass to me. Unfortunately will not recommend it to my frieds."

  • "I had dinner here with my sister last week while she was visiting and it was great. Our waiter chose items from the menu and the entire evening was sensational."

  • "I have heard mixed reviews from friends and online, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed my visit to Underbelly. I was seated promptly (with a reservation on a Saturday night). The server was relaxed and knowledgable about the food. The only hard part of the menu is trying to gauge if three dishes is enough for two people, but our server helped with that. While the prices may exceed the average in Houston, I think that it is worth the money. (Beet salad, crispy pork belly and goat/dumplings.) I will probably return to try more items on the menu."

  • "I've been twice, both times at lunch. I love the decor of the restaurant. My first waiter was far better than my second, and it truly made a difference. The food is fresh and well seasoned, but I just chose something that I didn't like as much as what I chose the first time. I know this is one of the trendiest places in Houston to dine so I will definitely go again and try something else on the menu. My only complaint is that the wonderful, delicious hot bread & butter they bring you is not complimentary, but rather appears on your bill at a cost of $4.00! Seriously?"

  • "This will be my third time going to Underbelly for dinner. I can honestly say I'm never disappointed. I go there quite frequently for lunch with friends but I always feel like dinner has a different feel to it. The ambiance is always great and although the noise level is a little loud, it just means it is the place to be at. The food is on point and I couldn't ask for more. Service is top notch as well."

  • "The first experience was divine but this last time everything was over salted and difficult to eat from the salad to the fish. Service and beer selection were the stars of the dinner service."

  • "This is the second time I have eaten at Underbelly in Montrose. It's expensive but the food is excellent! The food is organic and nearly all the produce and meat comes from within a 100 mile area of Houston - so local. They have a great wine menu and beer menu too. Would highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion."

  • "A great place for those interested in tasty, immaginative, healthy food. My wife and I enjoyed the entire experience. The food was great, the waiter attentive but not obtrusive, service was fast and courteous. All in a comfortable laidback atmosphere. Highly recommended for those who enjoy trying new food combinations. Definately not for the chicken fried steak and mashed potato crowd"

  • "Had late reservation on Saturday night but was able to move it a bit earlier. Good thing as we were there over 2 hours enjoying ourselves. Waiter was very helpful in navigating the menu. We chose the fish group dish and 4 small plates. Fish group plate was outstanding and fun. It presented several different ways to eat it. Butcher's choice ribeye was killer good. We did not have a bad choice. Chef came out to meet us and ask about dishes. Desserts were all great as well. We had one of each. Decent wine list, but no hard liquor. Overall was an oustanding experience and will definitely return to try other dishes."

  • "I live in Mississippi and travel to Houston several times month of. Underbelly, the food and the staff are a definite to see and enjoy each time. If I have a new client this is the spot I pick to make a memorable lunch or dinner. My top choice for incredible food and a great atmosphere."

  • "We very much enjoyed our first visit to Underbelly. The terrine plate, with charcuterie, terrine, head cheese, pickles and strawberry mustard, was outstanding and the grouper was beautifully cooked and came with a delicious broth. The warm Meyer lemon pound cake dessert was also excellent. I am sure we will be back."

  • "Really enjoyed our first experience at Underbelly. Loved the idea that each dish was for sharing which we usually do anyway. We thought the food was creative and very tasty!"

  • "Nothing less than amazing! Our food was delicious and the service was spectacular. Thank you for a wonderful evening!"

  • "The menu is eclectic and off the beaten path. Wine menu is great, but it's not a spot I would frequent - menu options are good for sharing, but hard to have a meal to oneself with the choices. Desserts were great, but we had everything on the menu and shared."

  • "The food was delicious. Our table tried several items on the menu and we were all impressed."

  • "We took two of the most finicky eaters here without ever having tried the food ourselves first. Amazingly they were super impressed and liked the dishes we ordered. I like the fact their menu changes daily and they throw in a surprise dish that the staff hasn't even tried. I can't rave enough about the flavors on the palette. I highly recommend others try this place. But don't go there expecting a cocktail. They serve strictly beer (and very tasty beer I might add), wine, sake, and cider. Don't let this discourage you because the food is excellent."

  • "Not much more to say than hasnt alerady been written. high quality local foods focus. We tooks the small plate approach raher than family style and were exremely pleased with each dish."

  • "Started with the Beet salad and bread - excellent. Had the salad - okay. Then the Rendang and Pork chop. Rendang (I'm Indonesian) beef was stringy and chewy. Was with a customer and didn't want to complain in front of him. Pork Chop was tougher than I was expecting from other pork chops I've had elsewhere. Seasoning was nice. Dessert was good. Coffee was not."

  • "Though the food is excellent, this is my third experience, and was the third disappointing time. The first, we showed up for our reservation and waited 25 minutes past our reservation time. The second, we waited over an hour past our reservation time and were then seated in a cold, empty side room. This time, we only had to wait 10 minutes past our reservation, but the disappointment was in the food....specifically the portions. I couldn't believe how small the portions had become....especially when the prices had remained the same (if not increased). The braised goat and dumplings (while amazing) were HALF the size that they had been a few months prior. It was very disappointing, considering the cost of the meal."

  • "You would be hard-pressed to find another restaurant in Houston that matches the quality of fare served here. Our party of 3 ordered 3 dishes to share, and all were excellent. I relied on our server to recommend a wine, and her choice was superb, and surprisingly affordable. Noise level was high, but that's the way it is here. We sat close to the open kitchen. Always a treat to watch the staff put dishes together."

  • "I had heard a lot of good things about the restaurant and was not disappointed. Six of us met on a Monday evening and the noise level was not too bad. We were seated at a round table which was nice so we could visit. We brought our own wine which is a really nice option. Our waiter, Sean, did a good job serving and we actually just let him pick the food for our table. He was spot on regarding the amount and we took home a very small amount considering how much we had. He had it brought out in stages and accommodated the non-meat eater in the group with selections not on the menu. Especially liked the roasted beets, the brussel sprouts and the brisket although we enjoyed every dish."

  • "We had an outstanding dining experience at Underbelly. Our server, Shawn, did an excellent job of explaining the concept and menu to us. Everything we ordered was better than the description. We will be returning when we next have the opportunity to visit Houston."

  • "Fun to introduce 2 dear friends to this culinary mecca. Goof choices for our varied pallets-worth splurging on wagu with fab sautéed brussel sprouts. The vinegar pie is sublime!"

  • "Bring 4 and order small dishes. In previous visits there were always one or two stars, but tonight the outliers were much closer. My least favorite was the Satay. While the beef was awesome, both from texture and flavor point of view the cold Soba noodles are not my favorite. The Korean goat and dumplings, another menu regular absolutely needs to stay on the menu, as is. There is a great combination of texture from ultra soft meat and the chewy dumpling and the zippy sauce. The highlight was the fish collars. I am not sure what was better: the flavor of the sauce and the fish itself or the crunchy and soft texture the. Other notables were an unusual cut of Wagyu perfectly cooked and seasoned, the roasted beets and the caramelized broccoli."

  • "small paltes we shared: Korean Braised Goat & Dumplings are maybe the best thing on the menu. But if you don't like some heat, stay away! This is a must small plate. Roasted Beet Salad, Green Strawberry, Meyer Lemon Mascarpone, Benne is outstanding. Roasted Butternut Squash, UB Bacon Jam. You are going to want to order an entire plate of the UB Baon Jam.... Smoked Pork Loin, Cheddar Grits, Shrimp Étouffée, we ate this small plate as the entre, there were three of us. It was delicious and there was plenty of it: for desert this rocked our world, MEYER POUND CAKE, KISSEL, SEZAMKI. The puond cake has great texture and is served warm. We had this with dinner...it was a good choice 2010 Coquerel Petite Sirah, Napa"

  • "I went for the second time and took my partner and my extended family. The service was great but the food was just ok. I like the way the food comes out in courses, but it all should have been hot. Several of our dishes were only warm. We tried 6 different courses, of the 6 1 was very average, 3 were ok and 2 were great. I might try this place once more in case we were there on an off night. I love the feel of restaurant."

  • "I am shocked and disappointed to say that absolutely nothing- from the ambiance, to the service, to a single dish out of five tasted (with the exception of the bread, which is made by another establishment) - is anything special. The only thing remarkable was the pricing, given the complete lack of any exceptional quality. I had extremely high hopes for Underbelly and was totally surprised at the complete let-down."

  • "I went to underbelly on a Friday evening with two picky eaters that were initially very intimidated by the menu. Our server made some excellent recommendations and everyone at the table cleaned their plate! The brisket sandwiches and vinegar pie were both to die for!"

  • "This was my 4th time at Underbelly. All previous experiences were excellent. Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed on this 4th experience. The menu options were disappointing compared to previous times. I followed the waitress's recommendation against my better judgment & chose the brisket for a main dish. Brisket is not Prime Rib nor is it Roast Beef. Brisket was tough & fatty and no burst of flavor. Brisket has to be prepared long & slow and a restaurant of this caliber and reputation should know that. We'll come back but won't be quite as excited next time."

  • "I took a client from Brazil and he loved it! He had never been to such a unique place in Texas. He thought the presentation was great and found the server and staff very helpful when he had questions about the type of meat they were serving. This was his first time to Houston and Underbelly left him with a good first impression."

  • "We went as a group of 4 coworkers. This was my 3rd or 4th visit. Everything was very good and our server was informative and attentive. The prices are reasonable at lunch. I didn't love what I ordered, but I think it was a personal preference vs. food quality issue. It was a little sweet for my taste. My companions loved their Shrimp and Grits, and the deconstructed pot pie they ordered. Known as the chicken and butter biscuit on their menu. I recommend Underbelly and will be back."
