A word from Umi Japanese Restaurant
Umi's dining room transforms the top floor of a Shadyside Victorian row house into a delightful Japanese garden. Authentic tatami seating, a large sushi bar, and a delicate waterfall create a transcendentally peaceful dining experience.

Umi offers an evening of unparalleled dining, featuring New York style sushi and Japanese cuisine and meticulous preparation. At center stage is our awe-inspiring omakase: a multi-course adventurous meal prepared by Mr. Shu, winner of Pittsburgh Magazine’s Chef of the Year.

In addition to world-class sushi, Mr. Shu and his staff also prepare a wide selection of dinner entrées including teriyakis and tempuras. A wide variety of cocktails, sakes and wines is available to complement your experience.

Diner Reviews
  • "Pricey. Overall food was great and quality. Portions could be bigger both in salads and sushi. Service was excellent. Loved the valet parking for that area."

  • "The many positive reviews of Umi led me to expect an excellent meal. Instead, the 7+dessert course Omakase underwhelmed to the extent that we refused the final 4 courses, and left to dine elsewhere. First, the presentation was terrible: each course was presented without any care on a large dinner plate. Each was smeared inconsistently with a seemingly identical sweetened soy-sauce. Second, there was no variety of taste between pieces of fish on the plate--all were quite bland in taste and texture. Finally, there was no variety between courses, defeating the purpose of such a tasting menu. After a third course of 4 bland pieces of fish covered in sweet sauce on a messy plate, we gave up."

  • "If you're interested in paying top dollar for tiny/fancy portions--then Umi is the place for you. I enjoy food a lot, so the expense was worth it to me--however, if you're not ready to spend, go to Sushi II on Walnut. If, however, you can stomach a gigantic bill for two--then I strongly suggest the rock shrimp--it's next level, dog."

  • "Our first time here, after moving to Pittsburgh. We splurged and ordered the Omakase, which was a great choice. Seven different and delectable courses, plus dessert. Each was tiny and exquisite, adding up to a wonderful, relaxed, and not overstuffed whole."

  • "I love UMI! Every time we go, it is a wonderful experience. The service, the food, the ambiance."

  • "This is a pricey but top quality sushi restaurant. Servers are knowledgable and appropriate."

  • "Service was excellent, food was great. We did ask a simple request for a little cream cheese to be added into a roll, and the chef refused. For paying customers, we didn't feel that was acceptable. Our server was nice enough to comp our dessert, but it seemed it would have been more beneficial for the restaurant as a whole to just simply honor our request."

  • "We went for the 11 course Omakase and it was amazing. The service is impeccable, each dish is carefully thought out and the food is delicious to the extent that you will keep daydreaming about it the next week. "

  • "My husband and I had a great meal at Umi recently. We ordered the 7 course Omikase, which was a great way to try a little bit of everything. I would say that I was hoping for a few more adventures dishes as part of the Omikase, however it was perfect for my husband's more timid style. We will definitely be back to Umi! Well worth the price for such high quality!"

  • "I will say the service and the atmosphere is pretty good, but the food is too expensive with really small amount. I have ordered yaki-udon and seafood tempura and I was hoping that the "seafood tempura" should be different from the normal shrimp tempura. But it's almost the same except there is a piece of fried fish... and it costs 28 dollars... and the Sushi is too small too... "

  • "Went to Umi for the wife's birthday. Everything there was phenomenal. I have had sushi in many places all over the country. The quality of the fish combined with the expertise of the chef is phenomenal. I would recommend this restaurant for anyone who wants a true dining experience. Dishes Had: White Tuna Sashimi Yellowtail with yuzu jalapeño sauce Black Cod with Miso Sushi (assorted) Sashimi (assorted) Chocolate Maki for dessert Every one of these dishes far exceeded every expetation I had. "

  • "Chef is a bit picky and wasn't very accommodating when my wife requested not using seaweed to roll the sushi vs. soy paper or just doing rice. It was somewhat his way or the highway and when you are paying $18-$20 per roll, I would appreciate some flexibility."

  • "In all of my travels, I have not come across Sushi that is as good as Umi! I feel fortunate that food this good is in my hometown."

  • "EVERYTHING was great except for the table next to mine - the group were way too loud for my group to enjoy our dinner. We could hardly hear our conversation. "

  • "I'm a transplanted New Yorker, in Pittsburgh for 20 yrs. Umi is the best Sushi restaurant I have been to, and that includes the big name establishments in NY, Philly, Chicago and LA. Mr Shu is a national treasure and we need to keep him here in "the burgh" for many more years. About 10 years ago, I brought a VP of customer service (explanted Japanese who travels the country wining and dining) and 2 Japanese engineers who were in States for first time, to Umi. After "interviewing" Mr Shu and enjoying a meal, they gleefully stated "who would have thought the best Sushi restaurant in the United States is in the sleepy little town of Pittsburgh"."

  • "Overall review (Bad, OK, Good): Food = Good; Service = OK; Ambience = Good Food: Salmon hand roll, tuna maki roll, eel roll, and salmon roll. Compared to other restaurants in the area, I can taste the difference in fish freshness. This place had fresher fish, and also fresher wasabi, which made it more delectable. Compared to other restaurants with similar freshness, the portions were smaller but the price was doubled (e.g. piece of uni or tako su). Service: OK but odd. The server's demeanor and delivery felt as though the server was speaking to us as if we've never dined at a Japanese restaurant before. Also, it was evident the server was more attentive to other tables. Ambience: Quaint. One negative was that there is only one restroom."

  • "The sushi was as good as NOBU NY. Best sushi in Pittsburgh. Such a treat to dine here."

  • "The sashimi cuts were wafer thin--we could see through the fish. The rolls were tiny. We went to celebrate, and the evening was more of an exercise in restraint."

  • "Went for Valentine's Day, and we got the 7 course $85/person omakase dinner. While we certainly are familiar with sushi and eat it all the time, we have never eaten at Umi before. The first 6 courses were ridiculously small portions of fish -- two of the "courses" were 4 razor thin pieces of fish the size of a nickel - and the dessert was a strange peanut butter bon bon dish. We left the restaurant extremely hungry and disappointed, and with an over $200 tab for the 2 of us. Needless to say, we would never recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "I had the seven course omakase...and they served 4 plates of sashimi (each with 4 of the tiniest pieces that is...) that was just covered in soy sauce..nothing special. The last plate I was expecting something special but had 5 pieces of sushi...which overlapped with some of the sashimi we had earlier..not much variety. Also the server really destroyed the ambiance of the restaurant. The way he presented each dish was very amateur. Constantly saying "uh.." When he forgot the description...didn't really sound like he knew what he was talking about."

  • "Won't get this experience many places in pittsburgh. Umi's food has tremendous quality, presentation, and preparation. The intimate setting and trendy decor take Umi to the highest level of fine dining for pittsburgh restaurants. I recently took someone on a first date there. We had a reservation and had to wait for our table, but other than that, we had an excellent visit. I was impressed with Larry Bridge was more than knowledgeable of the menu. He was very helpful with any questions we had. Keep up the good work!"

  • "We were visiting from out of town, and had the 11-course omakase menu. Each course was small and painstakingly prepared, with amazing variety considering that ~90% of the meal was seafood, primarily raw with minimal accompaniments. Don't expect vegetables or rice! A typical course was 3 small slices of sashimi, with a perfectly complementary sauce and perhaps a touch of wasabi. Rarely have I spent so much time enjoying every single bite of a meal. The miso black cod was expertly cooked and delicious, but was overshadowed by the small, simple sashimi plates (and this is coming from a serious black cod lover). Exquisite dining experience!"

  • "The restaurant was easy to find and lots of free parking on the street after 6PM. The wine by the glass list had great choices. We had an appetizer to share, tuna sashimi, and the sushi platter. The fish was of the best quality and flavorful. The house miso soup was tasty but the ginger salad was just like those I had at other asian restaurants. The portion sizes were just right to experience the flavors. We had dessert as it was a special occasion and, although the they were interesting combinations of flavors, they were too heavy to finish. I would like to go back and order the omokasu dinner where you experience whatever dishes the chef is making that evening. Overall, it is a great restaurant for a special occasion."

  • "We'd never been there before and noticed many unfamiliar things on the menu compared to our typical sushi outings. Our waiter was awesome at telling us about the specials that make Umi famous and in great detail explaining flavor profiles, what dishes are really popular, etc. Every dish we had was delicious and spot on to what was described. It's really great when a waiter such a deep knowledge of the menu offerings to help when in unfamiliar waters- we will most definitely be back!"

  • "No eel was in the sushi bar! No custom made requests. Ordered the sushi expierence for one 20 minutes later was told had to be ordered for TWO Would have walked out at this point but the wine was good. Had a sushi platter---was NOT impressed Would not recommend this location to any of friends!"

  • "Ive been to Umi over a dozen times. weve always enjoyed the food, and ambiance. This time was different. they werent ready for us at our reserved time. we needed to wait around 30 mins. The DID buy us two rounds of drinks, but there is definitely a turnover in staff, and the vibe is different. Our server was great, so great, while he took care of several tables, he also tried to break up a loud fight in the kitchen between a manger from soba [?] and a cook. Ive been to restaurants all over the world, but Ive never heard " dont you f...ing shove me again" coming from a kitchen. So to sum up. great food, great table service, bad vibe. Maybe my 200.00 dinner bill, could buy them a proper kitchen door instead of the current curtain."

  • "The server was terrible; worst service I've ever had at a restaurant. Our waitress never refilled our water, never asked if the food was alright, forgot to give us soup and salad that was included in the price of the meal, and took forever to give us what ordered. We finished our entire assorted sushi dinner and two spicy spider rolls before she came back to see if we needed anything else; this is when she had mentioned that she forgot our soup and salad, but of course never brought it. We then ordered two additional spicy tuna rolls and another glass of wine. We didn't get the wine until after we finished our entire meals. She clearly paid more attention to other tables and not us. If was a shame since we love the food and the restaurant."
