Ume [oo-mey]: noun: plum; adjective: tasty, devotion

Ume serves creative dishes grounded in northern californian ingredients, and inspired by the Japanese pantry. The menu, created by Daniel Patterson of Coi, features simple, clean, bright dishes that feature the best of the season.



Plum Bar, a neighborhood bar and restaurant, is also right next door. We serve inventive and classic cocktails, and fun, tasty bar food. Happy hour is 4:00 to 6:00 pm M-F. We open at 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

  • "My boyfriend and I made a reservation to dine at Ume to celebrate our 1st anniversary. We've been curious at trying this restaurant when it was previous Plum, and we're glad that it's still associated with Plum Bar being just next door. Enjoyed our cocktail beverages, and variety of small plates to choose from is great to share. The squid small plate was tender and most scrumptious, I could just eat this as an entree on its own. We both enjoyed our bowls/main entree, found them very flavorful and good portion for sharing as well. It was a very quiet evening when we were there, which is of no complaint at all. I do wish Ume luck and hope their business will pick up with time."

  • "If you've been to Coi, you likely know and appreciate the philosophy of letting quality ingredients speak for themselves, with occasional unexpected ingredient pairings. With our experience of the Ume menu, this approach was outstandingly successful with the roasted eggplant dish, which had a perfect balance of smoky, savory, minty, and spicy notes. I'll remember it for a long time; it's always impressive when you are convinced to like an item (eggplant) you usually don't. With the other things we tried, however (snap peas, soba noodles, chicken ramen), the flavors weren't as inventive... the pea dish was a pale shadow of Coi's delectable pea soup, and they don't make their own ramen noodles (disappointing for a $17 noodle dish)."

  • "Great to have a more casual, less expensive concept, but the food is not outstanding as it was under Plum. Food is still creative but not entirely successful. Highlights were the tender seared squid, peas with miso & marinated white trout (they were out of salmon). Although others enjoyed the sticky pork & rice dish, I thought it too salty with soy with tough pieces of pork. The yuba/mushroom/egg dish was too mushy without contrasting textures. There was a lack of flavor with the soba noodles & the broccoli was too charred. Server was inattentive considering less people were there at 9:30pm. Music was too loud--obviously trying to attract a younger crowd. I would go again but let Ume improve some of these dishes first."

  • "Ume is a reincarnation of Plum. I always thought the food at Plum was just OK. The food we had at Ume was disappointing. Plate of pickles looked like someone just flop a mass of radish on it. Short ribs didn't come with knife and were too large to eat with hands. Ramen was ok. I wish the broth had more flavors and that the chicken weren't so soggy."

  • "I was so happy to get this reservation. The menu is SO limited. In our party of 4, we tried almost all the dishes. The ribs were so fatty, the portions are so tiny and overpriced. Why would you open a Japanese restaurant right next to one of the best Japanese restaurant in the Bay Area? Plum was so good, this latest Daniel Patterson attempt is a big boo. "

  • "I had been to Plum twice and planned to return but discovered Ume was now there. Serendipity. With the help of a lovely server my friend and I had a lavish meal. Four small plates and one bowl. Of course we over ordered and we were warned but it was all so interesting. Don't miss the dumplings and the ribs. "

  • "My date and I had the tasting menu with the wine pairings. Excellent in every respect. The dishes were imaginative and tasty, we left feeling very full. The beef and the Asparagus soup were our favorites. The egg ravioli was also great. My only comment was that the seats on our side of the restaurant did not have backrests so after a few hours the seat was a bit uncomfortable. Overall though an excellent experience we were both glad to have dined at Plum."

  • "I loved Plum when it first opened though on subsequent visits the food did not shine. The Ume menu looked very enticing so we thought we'd try again. Service was bumpy -- the waiter didn't know the new food very well, and things came in fits and starts. Even three glasses of wine did not arrive all together, and there was no explanation why one was missing. The food was also variable -- the rice chips with umami powder are addictive and perfect with a cold ale. Other dishes were less exciting. Though everything was reasonably tasty, for a concept that proposes to be inexpensive it really wasn't."

The wine list is impressive; cocktails are imaginative and great tasting; appetizers and entrees were innovative and every bite revealed the complexity, interaction and melding of carefully selected ingredients. To round out our enjoyable experience, our server was attentive to getting us out the door to meet our show time schedule."

  • "We were looking for a place to catch an early dinner before heading to the airport hotel when we stumbled upon Plum online. The neighborhood around this restaurant has undergone a makeover which intrigued us to see urban renewal at work. Also, the menu on the website and restaurant photos looked interesting. The restaurant was quiet when we arrived so we had a choice of seats and chose to sit at a bar like area where we could see our food being prepared and talk with the kitchen staff. While our burger and lamb were excellent, we also enjoyed the friendly staff who explained a lot of what they were doing. My guess is that this would not be possible in the middle of a rush but we found it fun anyway."

  • "The service was the best part of our Plum meal; it was attentive and professional. At first the music was too loud, but the waiter responded by turning the volume down appropriately. I found the food good, but not outstanding compared to other Oakland restaurant choices. The menu was rather limited and the prices were on the high side. The wood block chairs were hard to move and if you are thin like my guest, beware the wooden banquette with art work at head level, thereby keeping you from leaning against the banquette's back. Sitting for the whole meal on a hard wood surface without a backrest does not promote restful dining. I will not be returning."

  • "Plum sat us at the Chef's counter; my friend and I are a real handful...questioning every plate, dissecting each flavor and finally hearing the chef's input - what a special treat!Pork belly and duck confit spectacular with the local vineyard Zinfandel(Urbana). I was impressed by the perfect lil' pockets of Gnocchi glazed "crisply" on one side sitting in a perfect sauce of peas, pistachio and mint. Yummy! The chocolate tart was the perfect topper to my BIRTHDAY dinner. Thank you Plum!"

  • "Had a great birthday dinner here. Spaetzle were tender and flavorful with charred cabbage and apple slices, rated one of the best dishes ever by my discerning son. Burger was excellent, juicy and flavorful. Rock cod was cooked perfectly and served with tender fava beans and fennel. Desserts did not disappoint. Serving waiter was excellent though bar was a bit slow and initial glass of wine was turned. Waiter quickly and unquestioningly replaced it. Sit at the "Chef's table" to watch the chefs at work in a smooth dance."
