Diner Reviews
  • "We loved everything about our experience at Umami except the dessert, which was meh. But the sashimi was very fresh, goat cheese dumplings were an unexpectedly delicious surprise, and entrees were killer. I had the udon and my husband had the ribs. Delicious! We will definitely be back. The dessert, as I mentioned, was boring and his wasn't very good. Mine was good but not up to par with the rest of the meal."

  • "This was my third visit to Umami, and like the previous two, it was a great experience! We ordered the sashimi special, served with three housemade soy sauces. The smoky one was divine; rich and earthy. The sashimi was so fresh & flavorful. My boyfriend ordered the hanger steak, which was cooked to perfection & accompanied by tasty little edamame cakes. I had the seared tuna special over a bed of vegetables sauteed in a lovely Asian sauce. I love that they use locally grown produce & other local products. The service, as always, was impeccable. Just the rich amount of attentiveness, with a touch of good humor & great menu suggestions. It's a very tiny place, so reservations are a must. One of my favorite restaurants on that side of town."

  • "My father and I have been going to Umami for years, and we always LOVE it. It is unique and flavorful. Just a wonderful find. "

  • "This is a small restaurant with seating for about 30 people max. Still has everything you need for a great meal - great food, decent selection of wines & beers, good service and ambiance. Worth a try, and a repeat visit or two - especially if you like fresh fish/sushi/sashimi. "

  • "Food was excellent, service was good. Great spot for an intimate date, not good for large groups."

  • "Umami has great food. The chef manages to change the menu with his daily specials, however its hard not to order my usual (the salmon) because he grills it perfectly! He offers a local green salad which is amazing. Desserts are great and he always manages to offer at least ONE that is gluten free. Love this place."

  • "This has got to be my absolute favorite restaurant in the Cleveland area. My husband and I always celebrate our special occasions with a nice dinner out. Umami never disappoints ! From the ambiance to the wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. This is one very talented chef and the food is always fabulous."

  • "An international group was staying in a nearby hotel after long trip. This was a perfect place in this quaint, suburban village. Very interesting Asian fare. Seafood bias. The specials were special. My marlin on sweet corn was exquisite...especially in early March. Great time had by all. The restaurant is small and intimate."

  • "I'm a huge foodie who works in the industry and this is my new favorite restaurant. The dishes are amazing , the check is on point and the service is knowledgable, courteous, and excellent at pairings. I will eat here as frequently as possible."

  • "I have been to Umami many times. The food is consistently very good. The presentation is exquisite . I feel the specialty drinks while good are overpriced."

  • "The food and ambiance reminded me of a chic, insiders only, Manhattan spot. Excellent sushi, wide variety on the menu for an Asian restaurant. Upscale, intimate, small place. I had the curry Chicken (I cant eat seafood), the ladies with me had salmon and grouper and were fainting over it. The curry chicken was the best I ever tasted... delicate, perfectly prepared, just the right amount of spice. They even had an excellent craft beer selection which is not required at an Asian restaurant in my opinion. The waitress had a cool accent."

  • "This chef-owned spot is fantastic. Matthew puts out terrific standards and beautiful specials in the Asian fusion gem in Chagrin Falls. The fish is fresh and delicious."

  • "Have dined at Umami several times and will certainly return though this visit was noisier than usual this time due to a large groupof diners. I should point out we were offered another table, but the restaurant is quite small and we didn't feel it would have helped. Still a good night!"

  • "Great food and great service!! Definitely will come back!"

  • "I loved the decor inside this little place. The service was fantastic and the food was great. Menu was unique and full of flavor. Definitely not your average chain restaurant. The actual space is quite small so the tables are somewhat close together but it didn't lose it's intimacy for me. I would highly recommend reservations because of the size. Overall this should make your list for date night!! And who doesn't love spending some time in Chagrin Falls anyway!!"

  • "Umami has become one of our favorite go-to restaurants. The staff is always pleasant and knowledgeable. The food is always delicious. The perfect meal for a cold winter night = the goat cheese dumplings to share, a bowl of the miso soup, and the udon noodles for an entree."

  • "I'm a vegetarian and Umami is a local Chagrin Falls Restaurant. The staff is always accommodating and willing to go the extra mile. I enjoy meeting up with friends and family at this gem. It would be amazing if they opening another location in Cleveland!"

  • "For really good, creative (fusion) food in an intimate setting, with some terrific wine and vegetarian options including local products, we come here. Great seafood, especially curried mussels with black rice. Friendly staff. Bringing family in the day after Christmas meant not quite as many specials to choose from as usual, and the tofu appetizer wasn't quite as tasty as on previous occasions, but the (local) mushrooms were terrific. Because of the small (cozy) space, I wouldn't recommend bringing small children----when we have them visiting, we get takeout, also highly recommended."

  • "Shared appetizer; two outstanding "big plates" and two desserts (we almost never have desserts) made for a delightful evening."

  • "Thanks for yet again an amazing meal! The flavors are always so wonderful and the service is best in Cleveland."

  • "My husband and I have never been disappointed with Umami. Their dishes are creative and delicious, and their waitstaff are very adept at advising and making adjustments for gluten sensitivity."

  • "If you're a Mussel lover, as I am, you must try Umami's Mussels in yellow curry sauce. They are amazing !! I have eaten at Umami many times & have always really enjoyed their food, but for some unknown reason, had never ordered the Mussels until a few days ago. Now, I have discovered more to love about this little restaurant in downtown Chagrin Falls."

  • "Umami has become our favorite places to eat. The food is extremely high end, but the atmosphere is laid back. We love that it is small, and not too noisy, but not "hushed" either. The wait staff is always extremely knowledgable about the menu and will help you make an informed decision. It is clear that the chef/owner understands that a well trained wait staff is critical to his success. Go. Eat. Enjoy. ."

  • "The food was OK. My curry was pretty tasty, but the Udon noodles were bland. They were out of two of the three kinds of sushi on the menu, and the spicy tuna was not especially striking. Enthusiastic service"
    Dined on 12/26/2013
  • "I love spreading out courses here and ordering small plate after small plate with a bottle of wine with my boyfriend. I couldn't be happier. Well I guess I could be if the door didn't slam shut every five minutes and it wasn't so loud in there. There are also barely any tables so getting a reservation is pretty annoying. I love the food so much though that I don't care about the negatives."

  • "I dine here almost every time I'm in town, which is usually 1-2 times per month. Great food and terrific service! The Salmon or Udon noodles our always my top choices."

  • "Everything about this quaint restaurant with a big-city feel is great except it's seating, a tight 34 maximum. Of course this also gives it its atmosphere. We were unable to make a reservation for 8 a month in advance. For parties of 2-4 it is perfect. Items ordered ala carte ---flavorful and beautifully presented. Helpful and attentive service."

  • "With all the local accolades and buzz, my party of 4 sat down with a certain level of expectation. Our assessment was that the food was OK, but considering we spent about $190 on the meal, we said, "meh". My tuna dish was good, not outstanding, as was the curried chicken and the appetizers--goat cheese dumplings, onion soup, and spring-like roll. The creme brûlée was just so so. The wine offerings were good but not any hidden gems that would make us say wow. We got the impression this restaurant doesn't know what it wants to be yet--we found their fusion concept to be lacking in taste and execution--and at the price point I'm not going to wait for them to do so."

  • "Very nice dinner. Restaurant is small and reservations are a must. The restaurant was crowded on Sat. night and the service was a little slow. The wait staff are personable and knowledgeable. Food was as always excellent and prepared well. We look forward to trying their Monday Supper club !"

  • "When it opened, Umami promised and delivered an eclectic assortment of Pacific Rim cuisine. A year ago though, we had fish that was truly overcooked, tough and curled up at the edges. They wisely comped the dessert. We took a year off, went back and, this time, had tuna. It was properly seared rare, and came luke-warm, as expected. But lukewarm too were the Asian noodles and tasteless broth that accompanied it. Mushroom soup was excellent as was the beet salad. Even so, there's no need to go back. There are too many other great dining choices on the East Side."

  • "Although the restaurant was loud and difficult to have a conversation, the atmosphere was fun and intimate. The menu had a nice mix of meats, fish and veges. The wagou beef was excellent."

  • "This has been my very favorite restaurant for at least two years now. It is a small restaurant with the best food. Hard to pinpoint the "type" of restaurant, as the dishes are just very unique and flavorful. LOVE IT!! I will be back soon and I highly recommend it!"

  • "After hearing good things and looking forward to our dinner, we were quite disappointed. My wife's tofu was hard and tastless, and my noodle dish contained a cheap cut of steak, and beef was the only taste I could discern."
