Diner Reviews
  • "Amazing service and I am a very picky customer..waitress was fast, friendly, and efficient"

  • "Service was attentive but not at all rushed. Sushi offerings were limited but excellent in freshness and taste. Halibut entree was perfectly prepared, fully cooked, tender and flaky. Emphasis is on local produce. Greens salad was adequate but not a "stand-out" dish. The berry-lemon tart for dessert was excellent, full of flavor and not too sweet. Chef is hands-on and present throughout dinner, an added benefit."

  • "Menu limited, which is a plus because everything we had was quality, as well as innovative and beautifully presented. Wine list is notable, not because it is extensive but carefully chosen, includes a variety, and reasonable values. Small place, closely seated unless you are willing to sit in booths at front window."

  • "Umami has a selection of unique dishes and specials with an Asian flair. Every one has been great and we have tried many. The chef is an artist in the kitchen and after dinner you can take a walk and look at the falls."

  • "We have been to this restaurant several times and always been very impressed. The food has been wonderful as has the service. Our last visit we took foodie friends from Dallas, TX who have dined at some of the finest restaurants in the metro area and they LOVED Umami!Said it rivaled any of the best places they have dined in Texas. Yummy martini's, great appetizers, super entrees and service great as always. Just a note...for you vegetarians/vegans out there....the chef at Umami will sub in high quality, organic, non-GMO local tofu to replace meat in any dish. Five stars!"

  • "This has become our go to restaurant in Chagrin Falls. Service, food ,and ambiance are all excellent. I had the tuna special of the night and my wife had the scallops both cooked to perfection. We started with the spicy pork meatballs , just the right amount of heat."

  • "Although the sushi/sashimi we chose was very good and fresh, the portions were small. We each had kale salad as well and it wasn't enough to fill us. Unfortunately the prices for the above were enough to stop us from ordering more food. The diners next to us ordered entrees which were amply portioned. Dessert was very good, and very generously sized. It's a teeny tiny restaurant and tables are very close together. Request a booth if making a reservation - you'll have more privacy."

  • "Never would have found if not for open table. Had scallops from menu and tuna special ... both outstanding. Small menu, but considering the size of the place, they have something for everyone's taste. "

  • "Thank you, yet again, for a fantastic meal! You never cease to exceed expectations!"

  • "Best restaurant in Cleveland. We go at least 3 times a week. "

  • "The owner chief, Matt does a supurb job with fish and local fresh produce. We both ordered the fish off the special board and ate 1/2 and then traded plates. We thought the other plate was just as good, but in a completely different way. "

  • "We had our daughter in from L.A.; and wanted to treat her with a fine dining experience. She travels world wide; and has close contacts with the Napa Valley wineries, so we wanted to give her an exceptional dining experience. We selected Umami as a result of our previous experiences at Umami. Without a doubt, Umami measured up to our expectations from both the quality of the menu and the excellent wine selection. "

  • "If you haven't tried Umami you are missing out. Menu is concise but there are always new and creative specials including fresh seafood flown in from the source. Consistently excellent. Small restaurant, not many tables so make reservations. Service is friendly and fast. Put it on your list of places to try. "

  • "Always look forward to their specials, even though the salmon is prepared like no other restaurant. It is so good its hard to try something else, howeve I just tried the Duck Confit and it was amazing!"

  • "We had a great time with good, interesting food and outstanding service. Will definitely return."

  • "As is our custom, we opted for one of the specials of the evening, typically fish that is flown in from Hawaii. Big Eye Tuna over a green tea noodle salad with spring ramps was terrific combination and made us think "spring". You can never go wrong with the lovely hydroponic greens as a starter, tonight with a lovely blood orange vinaigrette. A fresh grapefruit shortcake desert cleansed our palate and closed out another outstanding creative culinary experience. Pair wonderful food with the expertise of Nikki in the front of the house and you are in for a truly memorable evening. Thank you!"

  • "We loved everything about our experience at Umami except the dessert, which was meh. But the sashimi was very fresh, goat cheese dumplings were an unexpectedly delicious surprise, and entrees were killer. I had the udon and my husband had the ribs. Delicious! We will definitely be back. The dessert, as I mentioned, was boring and his wasn't very good. Mine was good but not up to par with the rest of the meal."

  • "This was my third visit to Umami, and like the previous two, it was a great experience! We ordered the sashimi special, served with three housemade soy sauces. The smoky one was divine; rich and earthy. The sashimi was so fresh & flavorful. My boyfriend ordered the hanger steak, which was cooked to perfection & accompanied by tasty little edamame cakes. I had the seared tuna special over a bed of vegetables sauteed in a lovely Asian sauce. I love that they use locally grown produce & other local products. The service, as always, was impeccable. Just the rich amount of attentiveness, with a touch of good humor & great menu suggestions. It's a very tiny place, so reservations are a must. One of my favorite restaurants on that side of town."

  • "This is a small restaurant with seating for about 30 people max. Still has everything you need for a great meal - great food, decent selection of wines & beers, good service and ambiance. Worth a try, and a repeat visit or two - especially if you like fresh fish/sushi/sashimi. "

  • "Food was excellent, service was good. Great spot for an intimate date, not good for large groups."

  • "Umami has great food. The chef manages to change the menu with his daily specials, however its hard not to order my usual (the salmon) because he grills it perfectly! He offers a local green salad which is amazing. Desserts are great and he always manages to offer at least ONE that is gluten free. Love this place."

  • "This has got to be my absolute favorite restaurant in the Cleveland area. My husband and I always celebrate our special occasions with a nice dinner out. Umami never disappoints ! From the ambiance to the wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. This is one very talented chef and the food is always fabulous."

  • "An international group was staying in a nearby hotel after long trip. This was a perfect place in this quaint, suburban village. Very interesting Asian fare. Seafood bias. The specials were special. My marlin on sweet corn was exquisite...especially in early March. Great time had by all. The restaurant is small and intimate."

  • "I'm a huge foodie who works in the industry and this is my new favorite restaurant. The dishes are amazing , the check is on point and the service is knowledgable, courteous, and excellent at pairings. I will eat here as frequently as possible."

  • "I have been to Umami many times. The food is consistently very good. The presentation is exquisite . I feel the specialty drinks while good are overpriced."

  • "The food and ambiance reminded me of a chic, insiders only, Manhattan spot. Excellent sushi, wide variety on the menu for an Asian restaurant. Upscale, intimate, small place. I had the curry Chicken (I cant eat seafood), the ladies with me had salmon and grouper and were fainting over it. The curry chicken was the best I ever tasted... delicate, perfectly prepared, just the right amount of spice. They even had an excellent craft beer selection which is not required at an Asian restaurant in my opinion. The waitress had a cool accent."

  • "Have dined at Umami several times and will certainly return though this visit was noisier than usual this time due to a large groupof diners. I should point out we were offered another table, but the restaurant is quite small and we didn't feel it would have helped. Still a good night!"

  • "Great food and great service!! Definitely will come back!"

  • "I loved the decor inside this little place. The service was fantastic and the food was great. Menu was unique and full of flavor. Definitely not your average chain restaurant. The actual space is quite small so the tables are somewhat close together but it didn't lose it's intimacy for me. I would highly recommend reservations because of the size. Overall this should make your list for date night!! And who doesn't love spending some time in Chagrin Falls anyway!!"

  • "Umami has become one of our favorite go-to restaurants. The staff is always pleasant and knowledgeable. The food is always delicious. The perfect meal for a cold winter night = the goat cheese dumplings to share, a bowl of the miso soup, and the udon noodles for an entree."
    Dined on 1/15/2014
  • "I'm a vegetarian and Umami is a local Chagrin Falls Restaurant. The staff is always accommodating and willing to go the extra mile. I enjoy meeting up with friends and family at this gem. It would be amazing if they opening another location in Cleveland!"

  • "For really good, creative (fusion) food in an intimate setting, with some terrific wine and vegetarian options including local products, we come here. Great seafood, especially curried mussels with black rice. Friendly staff. Bringing family in the day after Christmas meant not quite as many specials to choose from as usual, and the tofu appetizer wasn't quite as tasty as on previous occasions, but the (local) mushrooms were terrific. Because of the small (cozy) space, I wouldn't recommend bringing small children----when we have them visiting, we get takeout, also highly recommended."
