'Ulu Ocean Grill and Sushi LoungeLove this placeCan't find a better location or food on the big island. It's rare to rate a restaurant as romantic and kid friendly at the same time. It was my 7 year olds birthday and they made it so special for him - and we were not guests at the hotel. The food was spectacular as is the view and service. This is not a one off review for flavor....the food was not bad, as always, but not exceptional either. (Kind of makes one wonder how often the Chef actually tastes what is being sent out + checking food temp on the way to the table.
Anyway, I DO recommend going(--- but here is the underlying question ..."why do most fancy places on the BI always fall that little bit short of expectation on the food end?" The salad was excellent, the opa was cooked perfectly as were the accompanying vegetables, the noodle and shrimp bowl was delicious, and the flaming sorbet and meringue dessert was to die for. The service from the wait staff was impeccable and the managers stopped by to ensure that everything was to our satisfaction. And then tbere was the most gorgeous sunset. Menu is not really big, but I think there is probably something for everyone, whether it is seafood or beef or vegan. The corn and coconut soup was especially good. My wife and I will both be dreaming of that for a long time. Using Open Table I requested a special table. Boy did Ulu come through. We were seated on the edge of seating area, practically at the waters edge. As we watched the gorgeous sunset our waiter, Steph, brought us a complementary, celebratory glass of California champagne, allowing us time to enjoy the ambience and the wine. We both ordered the tasting menu which was comprised of very local selections fitting of a Hawaiian experience. After sunset a warm rain came down for just a short time. The sprinkles were refreshing but when the drops got intense the staff easily moved us inside to a table just inside for the completion of our meal.

A spectacular property. The evening we were there was windy, so it's not a quiet, intimate restaurant, but the setting is dramatic and the restaurant is beautiful. Everything about the meal was absolute perfection - great cocktails (including one we suggested ingredients for and the bartender whipped up something great), great service, great food (mahi-mahi and filet were delicious main courses), great wine list. Absolute perfection. Suggestions: book early so you can watch the sunset; ask for a beach-side table. Food was great especially the fresh ahi sashimi. Best I have ever had here in HI or anywhere else for that matter. Generous portions for appetizers and entrees so even thought II is pricey you feel
This restaurant is a cut above the rest on the Big Island. Casual elegance with outstanding food. The breadth of he menu will create return visits as it was hard to decide what to get- everything looked great.
Ambience was great too . Beach front dining at its best.

Our table was in a beautiful setting, beachfront. My husband had the tasting menu, I had the special (brisket), both delicious, couldn't have been happier with the meal. It was our anniversary and our daughter surprised us by having flowers at our table and paying for our meal, the staff took care of all of her requests. Add to that, whales performed.
