Diner Reviews
  • "The food was fine, the decor is really cute, but the music made it feel more like a club than a brunch place. It was impossible to hear anyone - my husband who was across the table, the server - I couldn't enjoy the food through the blasting club music. And it seemed to be the same throughout the restaurant and even outside. I asked the staff to turn it down, which they did, but it was still just too loud for a nice Sunday brunch. It's really too bad - the place has potential but I would not come back."

  • "i generally visit Ulah Bistro whenever I'm in DC. The food is very good and well presented. Service, particularly by my favorite bartender upstairs is warm, attentive and always efficient. I'd recommend Ulah Bistro as a solid, reliable dining option on U Street."

  • "The service was excellent, and the "bottomless drinks" was A REAL THING! I don't think I ever saw the bottom of my glass."

  • "Noise level upstairs was high. I had a reservation and when I arrived they only had the table right next to the front door. I asked to wait for another. We got one upstairs fairly quickly."

  • "Used a TravelZoo deal for brunch for 2 and unlimited drinks. Our glasses were never empty; They filled up a 2/3 full glass to the brim! Food was quite tasty with good options like breakfast sandwiches and nutella croissants. The service was great as they let us hang out for about 3 hours and never pushed us with the bill. Good food, great service, and if it was warmer we would have done the shaded outdoor seating. Definitely a great brunch spot."

  • "I keep coming back. Food is pretty top notch for most items though the breakfast pizza with crab could use work, but we always have a great time here and the waitresses and hostesses are terrific. Great at being fast on refilling brunch drinks for bottomless. Will keep coming back for more!"

  • "We had brunch at the Ulah and the service and the food were excellent. My wife has limited mobility and we were a little late for our reservation, but the staff graciously accomadated us. We loved the brunch selections and the bloody marys."

  • "My friend and I were seated near the leaky roof on the top floor. We told management but they shrugged it off and acted as if it wasn't a big deal. It was a bit crowded upstairs and there was only 1 waiter for all parties. A big party arrived shortly after my friend and I consequently our waitor disappeared for about 30 minutes as he was tending to the bigger party. The french toast and mimosa's were good. I would go back to try other menu items."

  • "When we first arrived for out 5:45 reservation we were told we must be done with dinner by 8pm. Once seated the roof began leaking onto the menus. We had to wait to be seated at another table. Which cut into our dining time. After looking over the limited menu most of the group ordered small plates. Some of the food arrived under cooked. Once we received the bill we had countless issues. We finally completed payment and once we got to the door the server demanded an additional tip. Needless to say this was my first and last visit to Ulah."

  • "Ulah tends to be a good go-to for brunch particularly with out-of-town guests or picky eaters. We can usually make reservations only a few days before and are seated immediately upon arrival. The location is also nice-- just across from the Lincoln Theater and Ben's Chili Bowl-- making it a nice mini history tour as well."

  • "I took my family to Ulah and we had a good time. I was a little miffed that they decided to seat us by the door. I could have declined but it was a busy Saturday night, after 9pm, and we wanted to eat. I would have preferred knowing they intended to seat us at the door and to have been asked if that was ok. Anyways, the food was good, plentiful and the wait staff was attentive. Waiter had trouble getting the temperature of my husband's espresso just right — it was scalding. I'd visit again, but definitely not sit by the door and not order espresso."

  • "We were seated between 2 large groups celebrating birthdays so we could barely hear each other and there was a draft that distracted us from the food. Our waitress kept the wine coming so we ended up having a great time."

  • "The restaurant had a live band, but the music was blarring and it made the experience less enjoyable than I'm used to at Ulah. The food there is delicious and the service is usually really good too, but they can't get the music right. It's too loud or there's weird techno that doesn't go with the vibe. The menu is great though, and it's usually easy to get a reservation. Solid drinks list and a good location too."

  • "Great location - very close to the U Street Metro Stop. Great place to see and be seen; food - too pricey, notably average."

  • "Brunch was bad service-couldn't get a Bloody Mary refill. Not worth the price. Food wasn't bad but the service was miserable. Also too noisy. We waited almost 20 minutes after asking for the tab and eventually we just got up and found her to pay."

  • "We went here before a show at the Lincoln Theatre. The tables are awfully close together and the hostess sat us right next another couple, even though there were quite a few empty tables. The food was average at best, and for the price paid was lower than might be expected. This was our second experience here. The first trip was slightly better and we thought we'd give it another chance, but probably won't return again."

  • "This is the 2nd time I went to Ulah Bistro for Brunch (each time with a GroupOn). Sadly, we were late and put in the last table with your back to the kitchen and next to the restroom. I would not have a table there. Also, if you get bottomless mimosas and bloody mary's for 2 hours it would be nice if the waitstaff refilled your drink in a timely manner. The omelet was super greasy and not tasty. The other entree was fine. I would probably go back again, but not for full price."

  • "So, my groups of friends an I decided to go to Ulah Bistro in U Street for one of my friend's mom B'day. We were supposed to be 5, but out of the blue there were 5 more friends coming. I called Ulah and talked to Channel and she was so nice! She explained me that there was going to be a little bit of a wait because of the party increase but she was more than happy to have us all there. So, even tho we had to wait a little bit, they seated us in about 20 minutes. And the wait was TOTALLY worth it. Since we had to wait 20 minutes, it was 2:30pm and Brunch time was supposed to end at 3pm so they decided to extend the Bottomless Mimosas time just for us!! So we had bottomless Mimosas until 3:30pm!!! The waiter was awesome as well, great service"

  • "I really enjoy the ease of dining inside of Ulah. It is a great spot for a long or short lunch and VERY convenient to the Green line train station (U Street). The food is well prepared and the service is attentive."

  • "There is a very nice range of choices on the menu- something for everyone, really. The ahi tuna salad was fabulous. We also had the crab dish appetizer which was very, very good. Our server was pleasant and attentive. We'll definitely return."

  • "We had already been at Ulah for dinner, but this was our first Saturday brunch, which we enjoy it, although it was pretty noisy. All in all, a nice spot, very convenient for us living a few blocks away."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Do not go here for brunch if you expect to be able hear yourself think, let alone hold a conversation. The food isn't good enough to make up for the noise issue, either. My advice: skip it."

  • "Easily accessable as it is a few steps from the U Street Metro entrance/exit. Overall, one of the best places on U Street - numerous menu options all prepared to perfection."

  • "We had a reservation but still had to wait at least 20 minutes for our table and they had a jazz band playing right next to us. The food was pretty good, though, and the service was fine once we were seated."

  • "Arriving into DC a bit late for a reservation at one of our favorites, like Mintwood, we found this local bistro still had seatings. It turned out really quite nice. The food was good -- particularly loved the grilled octopus, the ambiance amenable to celebrating love, the wine and beer choices good, and the server really doing an extraordinary job on a very busy night."

  • "Portions were very small (left hungry) food was fair. The service was slow from the kitchen and the selection was limited. We went to a show, so we stayed late (10:30 PM) and had to pay additional (ok) but valet parking was a joke, they parked your car in a metered spot on the street for $20.00 . Go the Ben's across the street and park a couple of blocks down the street. Never again."

  • "I was looking for a place located near a metro stop that offered bottomless mimosas and was willing to seat a large group for an early brunch. Ulah's worked out perfectly. The service was great, our drinks were refilled often, and everyone liked their food. We had no issues getting seated or splitting our check; two key items with large parties. I would definitely recommend."

  • "Went for brunch on Saturday and it was delicious! The group I went with ordered: challah french toast, crab & brie omelet, nutella croissant & huevos rancheros--all were great, the huevos rancheros especially. Bottomless mimosas & bloody marys were also good. Definitely make a reservation, it was pretty crowded."

  • "The food was great. The service? Not so much... It was freezing inside. I'd go again for the food, and hope our first experience was a fluke."

  • "I went and it was freezing outside. Although I made a reservation the hostess only have the table on front of the door available. I had to eat with my coat on and every time the door opened I got a blast of that 15 degree weather. This was not a great dining experience. The food was awesome but it was cold in 30 seconds."

  • "The food is good, but the drinks are WEAK. Much better places for brunch mimosas throughout DC."

  • "Most of us got pizzas - they were all very tasty and very large. Drink selection is good and service was good. We sat downstairs and the cool air could be felt from the front door, but it didn't bother us too much. I would go back."

  • "Food was great and served on time no delays. Mussels were all open and very delicious. Service was also very good."
    Dined on 1/18/2014
  • "I went mostly for the smoked gouda mac and cheese. It was very good, although I'm not sure if it was really worth the price. I also ordered buffalo wings. They were just very basic dive bar type of wings. One friend ordered steak frites and his steak was very fatty (grisly chewy fat, not the flavorful kind). He was disappointed in how much he wasn't able to eat. The food wasn't that good, especially not for the price, and we were also freezing from cold air coming in through the door. I will not be going back."

  • "We had a great family brunch at Ulah. They were very accommodating of our group of 8, including one toddler and one gluten free adult. The food and service was excellent, including delicious ultimate Irish Coffees (with whisky and Bailey's). We also enjoyed the live jazz music."

  • "The menu selection is very diverse and it is easy to take a large group of friends here to eat (so that everyone can find something they like to eat on the menu). Their mixed cocktails are great, too. The staff is always pleasant and the restaurant has always been very clean. Valet parking is available and that is a plus!"

  • "I went to Ulah for an early dinner and I was very happy with the experience. I had eaten at Ulah a number of times over the past year, but this was an especially exceptional experience. The service was excellent and the food was awesome. The best part was the quality and quantity for the price. My girlfriend and I did not want to spend an exorbitant amount of money on New year's Eve and Ulah offered a great deal. Three courses for $100 plus a bottle of Prosecco. I highly recommend Ulah for a great dinner at an affordable price."
