His exciting menu expands on the Japanese tradition with new flavors and influences. Uchi means "house," and like many sushi bars in Japan, Uchi is located in a refurbished old home. Its vibrant design adds a fresh dimension to the neighborhood and has been warmly received by Austin's diverse dining crowd. Uchi accepts a very limited number of reservations and reserves the majority of the dining room for walk-in availability. Most seating is done on a first-come, first-serve basis.   • "In the past we loved coming to uchi. Lately, over the past year or so, I feel that the quality and the attention to detail has slipped. Uchi used to be #1 on my list of restaurants to go to in Austin. Now I feel that there are at least 2-3 restaurants I would prefer before uchi. I think it will be a while before we go back."

  • "First impressions - the valet was extremely curt and unfriendly, so much so that we opted to self-park. The hostess was efficient but seemed a bit cold. We arrived a few minutes early for our 7:15 reservation but had to wait until almost 7:30 to be seated. So, first impressions were not that great. Everything improved once we were seated, luckily. Outstanding customer service by all wait and bus staff, with everyone taking the time to explain each dish as they brought it out. All the food was fantastic and well prepared. I felt the food was overpriced, even for sushi standards, though. Also, I wished they'd had a full bar instead of just beer and wine."

  • "It was not all it was hyped to be, I'm afraid. We had reservations at 5, which is when they open. We got there at 5 to 5 and still waiting just over 10 minutes to be seated. The sushi is mediocre (I was expected to have my socks knocked off, honestly) and overpriced for dinky 5 piece rolls. They do not serve liquor, only wine and sake. After reading all of the reviews I thought I would have my mind blown by the food, but the only thing that exploded was my wallet. The only reason I rated it 3 stars is because one of their specials, something akin to Sake Salmon, was amazing. It was some the best salmon I've ever tasted. Unfortunately, nothing else that we ordered matched up anywhere close."

I didn't give it the full five stars this time because the Nigiri sushi I ordered was falling apart and more difficult to eat than the past times I have had the dish but the taste was still amazing. Our server Vanessa was very attentive and informative, and she remembered it was my husband's birthday from the note I made on my open table reservation and picked a dessert special of the day for him. Great experience."

With a Japanese husband of 17 years, living myself in Japan for 7 and eating sashimi/Japanese food for over 25 years, I can say I know a bit about the food and culture. We eat very little sushi and when we do it is only the traditional and not American fusion. The appetizers were good and the sashimi. The choices of sake are good but also expensive. While $150 is acceptable for a special occasion meal for us, $300 is what we paid for our most recent visit there for only my husband and I. We would like to enjoy Uchi more often but the pricing is well overpriced and a noisy dining experience."

  • "Mostly a special occasion place, as it's somewhat pricey. That being said, it was totally worth it. You end up ordering a lot of items, because the portions are small (think tapas). Every single thing we ordered was AMAZING. The quality of the fish is outstanding, and the flavor combinations were perfect. Service was also great. We went for my boyfriend's birthday, so they gave us a complimentary dessert (which was also delicious). The sakes and champagnes/white wines go well with most food on the menu. Definitely a must-try for Austinites. Make a reservation if you can - it's pretty popular. It also takes awhile to fully enjoy everything - we were there for a solid two hours, so don't expect to be in a hurry."

  • "I've been to Uchi twice and am very impressed with the overall experience of the restaurant. The food is consistently fresh, innovative, delicious, and visually appealing. The wonderful service takes it to another level. The waitstaff is very friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. Chris waited on our table, but he was more than a waiter; he was our advisor! We had one person in our party who is primarily a vegetarian, except he does eat chicken very infrequently. This was his first experience eating sashimi/sushi. After Chris suggested the first dish which he was confident this newbie would like, we all waited to see how it would turn out. Pair a perfect suggestion with an open mind and you get a new convert!"

It was difficult to hear what my companion was saying the entire time. REALLY loud that night. The food makes up for any shortcomings though, as this is one of the tastiest restaurants in Austin. Still give it a 4.5 out of 5!!"

  • "I made a reservation for my husband's 30th birthday because we had both been hearing such great things. Uchi did not disappoint. We got the signature tasting. I was a little nervous becuase I don't like sushi, but my husband loves it, and well...it was his birthday. Not only did he love the sushi options, but I was surprised to find that I liked them too. The service was great. Each server told us how to eat everything they set down in front of us (thanks guys!!). I felt like we were on an episode of Iron Chef. The food, service, and atmosphere was great. The only negative review I had was that it was a wee bit loud when we were there- but maybe it was just the people we sat beside. Other than that it was perfect. Thanks Uchi!"

I like that they carefully time the presentations of each of the chef 's tasting courses so you can savor and linger over each one. Only the noise level detracts from an otherwise superb experience.   • "The restaurant was wonderful. The food and service (Colby was our waiter's name, if I'm not mistaken) were both amazing. We got the 6-course meal, and that was probably enough food, though - thank God - we added the brussel sprouts (sp?), which might have been our favorite thing of all. My girlfriend and I both dig food a good bit, though neither one of us is particularly knowledgeable about it, but, nonetheless, we didn't feel intimidated or out of place. The wait staff gets that people are going to be somewhat clueless w/r/t the new sorts of foods that are being served up, so they don't rush their explanations. Also, we had a reservation at 8:30 on a Friday night, and, though the placed was packed, we sat down at like 8:25."

  • "Uchi is my favorite restaurant in Austin. First off, the red wallpaper is to die for. Secondly, the service is immaculate and the waiters and waitresses are very knowledgeable about the menu. I am a vegetarian, and the waiter guided me towards many options that were vegetarian friendly and was not critical that a vegetarian was eating a sushi restaurant. Although the restaurant is pricey, the happy hour is well worth it! I recommend making reservations about a week in advance since Uchi is very popular. If I could, I would eat at Uchi every night!"
