A word from U & I Thai
U & I Thai is a family owned Thai restaurant located in the heart of Vancouver on Cambie Street. Our menu is based on authentic Thai cuisine native to Thailand with a focus on quality, fresh ingredients for our customers. We are a fully licensed restaurant and offer ample space for both casual diners and organized parties which may find our Private Room perfectly suited for larger groups.
With her first enterprenuial venture being the owner of a street food truck in Bangkok, the owner, Ui Ratsomjit (pronouced U) spent much of her time prepared fresh foods such as her Green Papaya Salad, Satays, & Gapow Stir Frys for the local hungry patrons. Her style of cooking comes from the North East of Thailand "Isaan" where she is from and this a strong influence in all our dishes. Our Chef Maitee (Mike) Yangsuwan comes from the South of Thailand. His experience includes working with the Au Prau Resorts in Thailand for over 10 years. His Southern style influences our Curries and Stir Frys

Diner Reviews
  • "Great service. Standard Thai food offering. If I lived in the neighbourhood, I could see it as a 'go to' place. "

  • "The tom yum goong tasted great and is the only dish I would recommend, spicy, tangy and rich. Next, stuffed wings taste bland, boring and dry. Continuing, prawn with cashew nuts lacked that nice "pan fried" taste and tasted more sweet than spicy. Also, trying the restaurants' most popular dish, the red curry with duck, had dry tasting meat. Although the curry base itself was not bad, a medium spiciness with a sweetness from the lychee. Next, an eggplant dish which tasted too simple in a light soy, with no hint of spiciness. Further on, lamb massamam had a nice sweetness from the sweet potato and the meat tastes tender. But, there was hardly any meat and for $17.95, it is pricey. As for the coconut rice, unfortunately a bit undercooked."

  • "Ate with a party of 4 on Saturday night. Room was very busy. Service was efficient. Food portions were on the small side considering the price."

  • "Short and sweet: Wow! Great food, great service, great room. Our out of town friends were in Thailand recently: they said it was easily the best Thai food they've had since their visit there. Unreserved 5 stars"

  • "For the second time, the restaurant did not have my reservation on their up-front list. I believe they don't check the OpenTable reservations frequently, and it is not integrated into their main business flow, so it is pretty useless for people who book and get confirmations on-line as we are greeted with puzzled frowns.... so, no more Open/table reservations"

  • "This place has a staff that truly cares for the quality of the food and experience of dining. Family run and you can tell. I have dined twice at this restaurant as a couple and part of a group both times we were well accommodated and food was delicious. Tastes like mom's cooking.. if you happen to be Thai. Will be back.."

  • "Four of us had reservations for Valentine's dinner. The restaurant was full and constantly turning tables. There was a group in the back which probably did not help with the service. Service was slow and somewhat chaotic. We seemed to have several servers which was confusing to us and also the servers. The Authentic Pad Thai was a winner for everyone. The Tom Yum Goon soup was perfect. Our friends thought the Chicken Satay good but too thin and their request for a mild currie was too hot. My Ginger and Five Spice fish was generous and tasty. Tables are very close together making conversation a challenge. Will try again during the week, and not a Valentines day."

  • "If I were to go to this restaurant again, I would probably as for my food and drink to be put in with half the sweetness, or at least reduce 1/4 of the sweetness. I had the Thai Iced Tea and I would definitely ask that to be half sweet. The U & I Seafood combo was tasty, but the sauce could be ... you guessed it... 1/4 - 1/2 sweet. This might just be a style of the food that they prepare but I hope they can cater to people that prefer their food at little more savory. No complaints otherwise."

  • "Have been to U & I Thai on numerous occasions and have always found the food to be consistently well-made and simply delicious! This time around we had the pad thai and chicken curry (both yummy). The staff are friendly and efficient and really make you feel like your business is valued."

  • "The food is simply excellent! Unlike some other Thai restaurants, U & I Thai do not cut corners - when they say a dish comes with shrimp, they actually provide a reasonable number of large shrimp (as opposed to very few tiny shrimp, commonly seen elsewhere). The staff is mostly friendly and most seem interested in answering questions or providing recommendations."

  • "I saw this restaurant on the food network. I recent came in from Penticton,BC to attend a appt, thought we would try the restaurant. We are glad we did. Lunch special prices where decent for the amount of food that s serviced. The service was outstanding. Very pleasant atmosphere . I will defiantly go ther again when in Vancouver. I did recommended the restaurant to friends too"

  • "We dined here on a Saturday evening. Our reservation was for 8pm and we were seated on time and our order taken promptly. However our appetizers did not arrive until after 9pm by which time we were very hungry. The server did apologize after about a 45 minute wait giving the excuse that the back room was busy with a big party but there was no offer of a drink or something to compensate for the long wait. I assume they just did not have enough kitchen staff on to cope with a full (ish) restaurant. The food was average to good. There are better Thai restaurants in Vancouver certainly but it wasn't terrible and the price was reasonable. However the food wasn't good enough to feel the long wait was worth it. I wouldn't recommend it."

  • "This it the third time dining at U & I Thai and each time the quality of food has been excellent. Great flavours and good portion size for the value. Food comes out promptly as well. The servers seem inexperienced and this has been common in all three visits. Order mistakes, long waits to get the bill and generally seem a bit disorganized. Hopefully they will improve with more time!"

  • "We came in with a Social Shopper voucher but were treated just as well as the other regular diners. I have also dined in this restaurant before (without a voucher) and did not notice any difference in portion sizes. My sister had leftovers even after sharing her pad thai with me."

  • "My boyfriend and I had been somewhat lamenting the lack of really good Thai food in Vancouver, so when I read some good reviews of U & I Thai I decided to make the reservation there for our weekly date night. It did not disappoint. We shared spring rolls, som tum salad (green papaya) and a dish with noodles. The food was very tasty, the ambiance authentic and perfect for date night. The only reason I held back a star was because the food was a tiny bit too spicy for me (my own fault for ordering medium), though my boyfriend was impressed. Also the television was on, quite unnecessarily I felt, for a restaurant that was otherwise striving to be more of an intimate dining experience. Save the hockey game for the pub! We'll definitely be back."

  • "Greeting was somewhat abrupt including a question about when we made our reservation, but seated immediately and service was good. Table a bit randomly placed in middle of traffic flow so often people rushing past. Food and drinks correctly served in a timely manner. Noisy room, but nice decor and authentic costumes on service staff. Overall good experience and will return."

  • "You won't find any ketchup in the pad thai at U & I. The food is fantastic but don't come here for the service. Would definitely recommend the stuffed chicken wings, pad thai, green papaya salad and any of their curries. So delicious."

  • "I made reservation through OpenTable and had all time slots available between 6pm to 7pm on New Year's Eve. When we arrived, the server said that they're fully booked by telephone reservations. But because we went there at 6pm, before the dinner rush, we were able to be seated. We ordered the Pork Satay, Isaan Lettuce Wrap, Tom Yam Goong (soup), and the Red Curry. Overall we enjoyed our food. Everything were delicious. The highlight for us was the Lettuce Wrap. It is a nice light appetizer to have. We feel the Tom Yam Goong need to be improved. When we compared it to our favourite restaurant, U & I's version seems to have less varieties inside the soup. We'll be back to try other food on the menu!"

  • "We made reservations for my birthday on New Years eve early in the evening to avoid the rush. When we showed up to the restaurant is only had 2 occupied tables, yet the service staff claimed they couldn't find our reservation and made us stand at the door holding our 2 young children for 5+ minutes while they stared at their computer and talked among themselves. They finally sat us and 3 other couples who had come in while we waited. They gave the 3 couples menus immediately but left us unattended at our tables without menus for another 5 - 10 minutes. We had young hungry children and the lack of service really put a damper on our experience."

  • "Went for lunch with 8 co workers. Only one server the day we went so service was very slow, she only came over to us twice. They class christmas eve as a holiday so there was no lunch special so we had to pay dinner prices for lunch. Portions were very small for what we paid. On a positive note the food was very tasty."

  • "Looked for a good Thai restaurant that could accommodate my large family of 11. They were able to take us in no problem when I made a reservation on the same day. Food was really good. Highly recommended!"

  • "We were looking for a new place to try in the neighbourhood. We moved here recently and wanted to try some Thai food. We read the mostly positive reviews in open table so thought we would give it a try. It was awesome! The food and the service were excellent and they are very accommodating to personalize menu items. Will be back soon with friends."

  • "OK OK. This is family owned business, and it seems very professional trained friendly restaurant. It is kinda small, but yet very cozy. The waitress were all dress in custom for halloween. we were shocked how amazing the service be. Thai people are very friendly to everyone. Love it Love it. The food is amazing, fresh. My wife loves it and willing to come back. P.S. My wife is very picky."

  • "The service was excellent, a couple of us had food restrictions and they were able to tailor our dishes to that. All the dishes I tried were amazing! I especially liked the veggie spring rolls. All dishes were really big too...great value. They had the place decked out in Halloween decorations, which was a treat to see. Will definitely come back here and recommend to friends."

  • "I found this place through Urbanspoon. The ratings and comments were pretty good and since I love Thai food, I decided to come here with my boyfriend. We made reservations only just incase it was packed. Once we came into the restaurant, We were served right away. It wasn't so packed which was nice. I noticed that the waitresses were women. We wanted to switch tables to a seating with a bigger table. Unfortunately, that table had no been cleaned and prepped up. Once a worker came by, she immediately ran back to grab a towel and cleaned it up. They were all very nice and the food portions were big (if you don't eat that much) Overall, my experience there was pretty good. The noise levels were a bit too high and the restaurant was a bit cramp"

  • "A group of 12 of us went to the U&I for a 70th birthday celebration. We dined upstairs which was very appropriate for our group as we were the only ones up there. The food was excellent but we were disappointed that the kitchen seemed unable to bring all or most of our food out at the same time. From the first meal served to the last was spread over about 30 minutes so some of us were finished our meal long before the last person got theirs. In fairness the restaurant was VERY busy downstairs so perhaps the kitchen was just overwhelmed! We would definitely go back as the food was excellent but I think our experience would have been better with a smaller group."

  • "U & I Thai ended my previous lack of interest in Thai restaurants. Previously I had found the food at Thai restaurants to be uninteresting, mostly because the sauces were too heavy, cloying and strong on peanut flavour. There was a delightful clarity of expression at U & I, the sauces were just right (including a curry) and did not over-power the taste of the food. It was really tasty -- and my BC Gewurztraminer wine was excellent. The ambience was great and of course my dinner companion was, and is, a continuing delight."

  • "Food was soooo yummy but took forever to arrive. Lots of servers around but not overly attentive. Had to flag someone down each time we wanted anything. Drunken noodles and stirfry were ordered took over 1.5 hrs to eat a shared appy and mains. Just ensure u have lots of time and patients food is worth it!!"
