Diner Reviews
  • "An excellent find. Great tasting authentic food and an inventive cocktail list are enhanced by a cozy romantic atmosphere, especially the side tables separated by curtains complete with ornate paneling and mood lighting."

  • "I appreciated our tasty appetizers of mini crab cakes and panceer; however the entrees were disappointing. My friend had a lamb dish that was extremely spicy and and had many more bones than meat. I had Chicken Korma which is one of my favorite dishes but it was almost inedible it was so spicy and we needed to order a yogurt sauce to make it tolerable. One of the most disturbing things was a group of men and women at the next table who were loud talkers and every sentence was punctuated with obscene language. I had planned this to be an elegant, birthday celebration for my friend but instead it turned into a comedy scene. I had also included in my special instructions that we were celebrating a birthday and requested a nice table. Alas"

  • "My daughter and I enjoy finding a special restaurant every summer during RW. This year we found Tulsi, an Indian restaurant in midtown, on the east side. From the moment the door was opened for us, we were treated like special guests. I had an excellent appetizer, called Manchurian Csuliflowr. It was amazing. My daughter had a mushroom asparagus appetizer. For my main course, I had halibut that was crusted in very thin shredded potatoes. My daughters main dish was also excellent, I jut can't really describe it. Sorry! I had pistachio kulfi for dessert snd my daughter had mango kulfi. kulfi is a type of ice cream Both kulfis were rich and beautifully understated and delicious."

  • "First time visit and we're hooked! From basil and lemongrass scented cocktail to samosa sampler to entrees of tandoori halibut and goan seafood curry (beautiful, mild red curry w coconut), our wedding anniversary dinner was delightful. We were seated around 7 pm on a Friday and were surprised to find this elegant highly-rated restaurant was quiet and relaxing, unlike so many popular eateries in the city. Furthermore from start to finish, service was gracious and sincere. Only thing we'd have changed was the somewhat annoying conversation of the couple at the adjacent table--a common inconvenience of urban life--next time we might b more proactive in table selection when we want a romantic meal, but not Tulsi's fault! Can't wait to go back!"

A comida estava razoável. Na saída nem boa noite nos deram. Tulsi, nunca mais."

  • "went there with lot of expectations looking at Michelin rating. We ordered a 3 course vegetarian meal and and chef tasting meal. tastes garbage kabab was just rolled up gramflour. how can a sweet jam go with this dish? Soup: tasteless mango pulp (you dont put tadka to everything Mr chef, even if you do use mustard seeds wisely) Garnita: it was ice cube with shaved ice on top with some syrup on top main course: everything cannot be made into a kofta uttapam: sour stale bater paneer dish: jst tomato sauce.. butter paneer: HOPELESS Sour, tomato sauce from the can as gravy Mushroom dish: chopped up butter paneer dish with quinoa which was overloaded with salt in a bowl of tomato sauce kulfi: it was not a kulfi some noodles that was iced up."

  • "My God, what happened? Tulsi used to be the best Indian restaurant in NY, which status was by virtue of its outstanding food, which was a cut above the rest by a good margin. I am sad to report that this is no longer the case as its food is now pedestrian and probably just as good as those places that charge 1/10th the price. A few examples. Our shrimp appetizer contained, incredibly, little to no shrimp. We had to ask the waiter "Does this dish contain shrimp?". Very annoying. The daal tasted extremely buttery, and it had the kind of taste that you find at second rate Indian restaurants that use an abundance of butter to disguise basic culinary skill. The chickpeas were simply inedible. I could go on...What a glorious fall..."

  • "I have never before been so poorly treated in a restaurant. As a single, older woman I was seated between the door to the bathroom and the door to the kitchen. Single men were placed somewhat closer to the entrance, and couples and groups were seated in the front. The waiter couldn't have cared less about helping me to understand the menu, and to make a good choice. The food was mediocre, and expensive. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, especially someone eating alone. My meal was a sociology experiment, not a pleasurable dinner."

  • "Fantastic food ... great ambience! I am definitely going to go back here - the delicate flavors and aroma of the indian delicacies is ver rarely found in indian restaurants...!!!"

  • "The favors were enhanced, there were wonderful little touches to each dish. We had the tasting menus, one veg, one non veg. Each morsel of every dish was delightful. "

  • "Tulsi offers a weekday 2-course lunch for $22, or 3 for $25, the third being dessert. We opted for the 2-course. My wife had mulligatawny soup followed bychicken curry. Both were excellent, but alas both were served at lukewarm temperature. I had chaat as an appetizer--don't know what was in it but it was palate-pleasing--and then The Lamb Chops. Remarkably tender and remarkably tasty. A couple of bottles of Taj beer at $7 seemed excessive in light of the bargain pice of the lunch. Service was smooth and professional. Will certainly be back for dinner."

  • "Very good Indian food, a blend between tradition and innovation, with a fair service. I had to call waiters a few times for the menu and the water probably because there was a big table taking all their attention. A mistake in the bill. Overall positive but didn't impress."

  • "This highly rated restaurant is lovely, peaceful, with excellent service and interesting food. My companion, who is a great and experienced enthusiast of Indian food, loved it. But I (who also like Indian food) was disappointed. I specifically asked for my main course--roasted eggplant and other vegetable ingredients--to be mild. Well, if that was mild, I hate to think of what "hot" is. I ate only a small amount of it and was very grateful for the generous amount of nan to cut the painful spice. "

  • "This was a great spot for a business lunch. The food was excellent and it was quite enough that we could have a conversation without straining. I had a cauliflower appetizer followed by Tandoori Salmon and mango ice cream. Delicious. "

    Dined on 5/10/2014
  • "The environment was very nice and it is an elegant environment, but way toooooo dark. We had trouble reading the menu and then once the food was delivered....forget it. While the menu was diverse my food was a bit too spicy for me and I was never told about the heat or my preference."

  • "Great options from the prix-fixe menu for a business lunch, it was a no-brainer. the deserts were two, so we split and enjoyed them both."

  • "Loved it here, the waiters were amazing and the hostess as well, checked on us multiple times to make sure we were ok. Had the butter chicken and it was fantastic. Also a 5 star for the naan and the samosas, really enjoyed my dinner. Must return, thank you Tulsi! "

  • "Food was phenomenal. Went for lunch had the chicken korma and nana with a side of butter chicken. The food was exceptional as was the service. The lemon drop cocktail was also superb. The only problem is the atmosphere and look and feel. I love the curtailing to section off people. It just needs something."

  • "Excellent decor, well situated in Mid-Town, East side. Prawns and Manchurian Cauliflower superb. Chickpea dish at the upper limits of spice (for me). Wines overpriced. Indian restaurant populated by many Indian patrons, always a good sign. Would recommend."

  • "The food was delicious. The Achari chicken tikka and especially the lamb chops were the best I have ever had. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a fusion indian restaurant."

  • "A great place for a Business lunch! Nice atmosphere..:-)"

  • "A la carte dishes from the regular menu are well-prepared but nothing extraordinary. The tasting menus (if/when available -- call ahead) are the reason to come to Tulsi; each time at least one or two (and sometimes more) of the several courses offer a combination of flavors and textures that is striking and memorable. It's a bit hit-or-miss at times, bit still worth the effort. The selection of wines by the glass is ok, but again nothing exceptional. Sometimes several of the wines and beers listed on the menu are unavailable, which is slightly disconcerting. The servers' explanations of the dishes can be difficult to understand at times and their English conversational skills could stand a bit of improvement."

  • "Tulsi deserves its Michelin star. The food is exquisite; the waiter recommended their signature lamb chops, which we tried and they were possibly the best lamb chops I've ever had!"

  • "The chef and co-owner surveys the room and greets guests several times a night. The food is elegantly presented and well seasoned (not too spicy), and offers interesting variations on traditional New York Indian fare. Well chosen wine list. Highly recommend!!!"

  • "The food is nothing less than splendid and is quite often mind-blowing! The staff is friendly, professional and completely at your service. This is the best Indian Food I've ever had and I've had great Indian Food in 3 continents."

  • "attractive location with great service but the portions are small for the price"
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "This is a very classy establishment. Great décor and efficient service but the food is the real star. The modern style of cooking and presentation will appeal to the non Indian food expert but there is enough of the classic food to satisfy the traditionalist."

  • "The best high scale Indian I've had in NYC. Better than Junoon! Went for restaurant week and the portions are sized pretty good. Enjoyed everything! Cauliflower, lamb chops and dessert (very very sweet though). Definitely would go back!!"

  • "Tulsi follows the right formula for a superb restaurant. Simple menu, but every item is something to write home about. If you're interested in Indian fine dining at its best and enjoy flavor explosions combined with perfectly textured, scrumptious food and like the attentive, yet non-overbearing atmosphere class of service, then this is the Indian fine dining experience you were looking for. The staff are obviously passionate about their product and it shows in their amazing food and thoughtful service. Can you say 5 out of 5?"

  • "The food and service were excellent. What more can I say. The only glitch was that the bus boy who brought our iced tea didn't know English well enough to understand the word lime. He brought us lemon and we had to tell him to bring the green one. But that didn't take away from the excellent meal we had at Tulsi."
