A word from Tulsi
Tulsi features distinctive regional Indian cuisine created by Chef Hemant Mathur, critically acclaimed for his clean, distinct flavors and a master of tandoor cooking – from savory street food and breads to tantalizing vegetable specialties and fragrant curries, to signature tandoor-grilled meats and seafood. Designed for comfort, relaxation and the enjoyment of food, drinks and conversation, the 55-seat dining room and 15-seat bar/lounge reflects modern India with a nod to cultural traditions and motifs.

Guests may also enjoy a seven-course Chef's Tasting Menu (also a Chef's Vegetarian Tasting Menu) and bar snacks, as well as a thoughtful list of spice-friendly wines, handcrafted cocktails and beers. "Tulsi" (pronounced TOOL-see) means divine basil.

Diner Reviews
  • "Food was phenomenal. Went for lunch had the chicken korma and nana with a side of butter chicken. The food was exceptional as was the service. The lemon drop cocktail was also superb. The only problem is the atmosphere and look and feel. I love the curtailing to section off people. It just needs something."

  • "Excellent decor, well situated in Mid-Town, East side. Prawns and Manchurian Cauliflower superb. Chickpea dish at the upper limits of spice (for me). Wines overpriced. Indian restaurant populated by many Indian patrons, always a good sign. Would recommend."

  • "A la carte dishes from the regular menu are well-prepared but nothing extraordinary. The tasting menus (if/when available -- call ahead) are the reason to come to Tulsi; each time at least one or two (and sometimes more) of the several courses offer a combination of flavors and textures that is striking and memorable. It's a bit hit-or-miss at times, bit still worth the effort. The selection of wines by the glass is ok, but again nothing exceptional. Sometimes several of the wines and beers listed on the menu are unavailable, which is slightly disconcerting. The servers' explanations of the dishes can be difficult to understand at times and their English conversational skills could stand a bit of improvement."

  • "The food was delicious. The Achari chicken tikka and especially the lamb chops were the best I have ever had. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a fusion indian restaurant."

  • "The food is nothing less than splendid and is quite often mind-blowing! The staff is friendly, professional and completely at your service. This is the best Indian Food I've ever had and I've had great Indian Food in 3 continents."

  • "Tulsi deserves its Michelin star. The food is exquisite; the waiter recommended their signature lamb chops, which we tried and they were possibly the best lamb chops I've ever had!"

  • "Tulsi never disappoints. Outstanding and creative selections coupled with attentive and professional service. A wonderful place to dine with friends, colleagues and business associates alike."

  • "The chef and co-owner surveys the room and greets guests several times a night. The food is elegantly presented and well seasoned (not too spicy), and offers interesting variations on traditional New York Indian fare. Well chosen wine list. Highly recommend!!!"

  • "Outstanding Indian cuisine. We had the tasting menu - very generous portions. Staff was extremely attentive. This restaurant is deserving of it's Michelin star"

  • "Service Not So "Outstanding" Still worth it, if you can WAIT for a waiter"

  • "This is a very classy establishment. Great décor and efficient service but the food is the real star. The modern style of cooking and presentation will appeal to the non Indian food expert but there is enough of the classic food to satisfy the traditionalist."

  • "attractive location with great service but the portions are small for the price"

  • "The best high scale Indian I've had in NYC. Better than Junoon! Went for restaurant week and the portions are sized pretty good. Enjoyed everything! Cauliflower, lamb chops and dessert (very very sweet though). Definitely would go back!!"

  • "Tulsi follows the right formula for a superb restaurant. Simple menu, but every item is something to write home about. If you're interested in Indian fine dining at its best and enjoy flavor explosions combined with perfectly textured, scrumptious food and like the attentive, yet non-overbearing atmosphere class of service, then this is the Indian fine dining experience you were looking for. The staff are obviously passionate about their product and it shows in their amazing food and thoughtful service. Can you say 5 out of 5?"

  • "The food and service were excellent. What more can I say. The only glitch was that the bus boy who brought our iced tea didn't know English well enough to understand the word lime. He brought us lemon and we had to tell him to bring the green one. But that didn't take away from the excellent meal we had at Tulsi."

  • "dim lights and quiet dining experience. The place was full as a saturday night would be. The food was exceptional. We ordered the cauliflower manchurian and tandoori mushroom and they exceeded our expectations. We had the butter paneer and spinach kofta both which has great flavor. a little disappointed at the vegetable dish which had way too much of a coconut flavor. I felt like we were eating a bowl of coconut chutney. We didnt touch much of that dish. The pistachio kulfi was amazing with the chocolate samosas being ok nothing exceptional. Overall great dining experience."

Chef Mathur outdid himself and we will definetly return to try other dished. Kudoos to the wait staff who were all very polite and prvided excellent service."

  • "Dinner started off great with wonderful appetizers. Entrees were wonderful - Shrimp curry from Goa and Lamb Chops. Mint paratha was a great accompaniment. We were recommended Kulfi for dessert. But it was disappointing."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed Tulsi. We celebrated our wedding anniversary and it was very special. It was our first time there. The food, wine and service were exceptional. We will be going back very soon. A true gem"

  • "Having sampled some of the chef's excellent cooking at another venue, I was looking forward to the meal. However not a single dish was appealing or tasty. The appetizer soup was overspiced and not tasty. The supposedly tandoori salmon was lacking in flavor and had a consistency that made it hard to understand how it could have been cooked in a tandoor. The pistachio kulfi, something even the most humble restaurant in India does well, was almost inedible."

  • "Food was different, and yummy, impossible to order a glass of wine for under $15! Just silly. Food a tad pretentious. Waiter was heavily promoting his specials, which were all substantially more than the already expensive menu items. Overall, disappointing."

  • "There's always something to be said for feeling like you get what you pay for. In this case, I'd say only kind of. The food was good, and likely fit for foodies, but it wasn't as delicious as other Indian restaurants in the same class. The service was superb likely because we went on a weekday and it was rather empty. I'd go again, but not in the near future."

  • "There are many fine Indian restaurants in New York City. Tulsi has crafted a very individualized and artistic approach. If you love Indian food and are interested in expanding your horizon, this restaurant should be on your short list. Very high marks for a congenial and knowledgeable wait staff. The decor is elegant and soothing. Most important, is the artistry and pleasing flavors on your plate. There is a very wide variety of options from vegetarian through meat, fish and poultry and the spicing can be adjusted to your tolerance level. A hefty wine list will satisfy most clients. While this is a somewhat expensive restaurant, a three course tasting menu at $38. is a very reasonable introduction to their talents."

  • "The food was below average. The food was overpowered by the taste of cream and butter. It is a high time for Tulsi to realize that good food does not mean adding more cream and butter. This is only a way to hide the real taste that is there in the food. I have eaten food in several countries but this one is not appreciable. Paneer Tikka - Paneer not marinated properly. Also hard Dal Makhani - No taste. Was very sweet due to excessive cream. Butter Chicken - This was something different. Naan - This was really soft and great though :)"

  • "Unusually good Indian food. The 'amuse bouche" was out of this world, as were the samosas and other dishes."

  • "What can I say? I have never ever had fine Indian. Done very well! Good was most deserving of their M hat!! We had a show and it came out quickly."

  • "I don't see the "Michelin Star" hype. My wife and I both ordered the vegetarian prefix menu and the food was OK, not great. There were two main dishes and they were both fairly similar to each other (i.e., same type of gravy, the only difference was potato versus paneer) and the dessert was sub-par. Service and ambiance were great (as was the bartender's knowledge of drinks and wine) but wouldn't go back again for the food."

  • "First ever visit to NYC on a flying weekend visit and came across Tulsi. Superb and quite spicy food with the Goan Fish curry being the stand out dish . Great service and very knowledgable waiter who guided us through the dishes ensuring we had just the right amount each. I'll be back to NYC and I'll be back to Tulsi"

  • "Tulsi serves tasty Indian fare in an elegant and beautiful setting. I loved the classy, white decor and the excellent service. I also thoroughly enjoyed our food. The only one thing that marred the dining experience was the dessert course - it stood in stark contrast to the rest of the delicious meal. Tulsi is definitely worth the visit for a lovely and delicious meal, but I would grab dessert elsewhere."

  • "We had the $20 menu - One chaat and one main course. The chaats were wonderful - wish we could have had that as the main course. We tried the shrimp black pepper - a south indian dish - very well made, garnished without fear. The yogurt rice along with it was so so. Then, the Parsi fish of the day. The fish was well made, but very mildly spiced, more in tune with western palates. The Masala tea at the end (an extra) had no Masala, but it was good tea. The ambience could have been better. The bollywood song that was playing was awful and they were trundling supplies in through the front door! But for $20, this maybe close to the best deal at an Indian restaurant in the city."

  • "I was expecting this place to be amazing, as I had previously visited a Michelin star Indian restaurant and my expectations were high. Well this place is mediocre, the food is absolutely tasteless which is surprising for indian food. Save your money and pop over to any other indian restaurant in the neighborhood and you will get far better food."
