  • "I love the menu options at tsunami. They have great options and the food is all laid out in a nice presentation. Being a vegetarian I still had lots to choose from. Maddy was our server and was super friendly and very attentive. Recommending this place to all my sushi (and cocktail) loving friends!"

  • "There are great hole in the wall sushi places and luxe sushi places in the City. Tsunami is luxe if you consider $115 (tip included, just water) to be high, so I have higher expectations. The service wasn't bad was not particularly attentive or informative and the food took ages to get to the table even on a Wednesday night. I asked for a side plate so we could put the sushi in the middle and share but they didnt have any side plates, sorry. No biggie and the sashimi was sweet and fresh but nothing about the food or service really stood out. The restaurant is pretty and has a nice vibe."

  • "They try to make this a chic place with loud music and pretty deco but the fundamentals of food quality is not impressive. The texture of the sushi rice is wrong and the rolls fall apart the moment you pick them up. A true sushi master can spend years just to get these two elements right. Although I do not expect this level of precision but this restaurant's lacking in basic skills is very noticeable."

  • "I remembered this this restaurant quite fondly from when I would come here more regularly about 5 years ago. I was excited to re-visit it as a bday/valentines dinner w/ my beau. I was surprised it was not full when we walked in for our 8pm dinner reservation, given the holiday but if their sushi experience was like ours then I understand why. Service was good. Our waitress was nice, but not exactly engaging or enthusiastic. We ordered (1) signature roll & two maki rolls. I know maki rolls are pretty standard and not very exciting but all 3 rolls, including the signature roll tasted bland. I don't mind throwing down for a memorable meal but unfortunately this meal which included saki was not worth the $100 spent."

  • "too bad. loved the atmosphere and service and food. the the bill was a shocker. i had $60 coupon and then dinner was another $68 for just 2 of us and we didn't even have wine/sake. portions were small too. just a one time experience, won't go again-too expensive for 2 people for a dinner out (not a special occasion). we'll try some other Japanese restaurants"

  • "My husband and I loved Tsunami so much that we ate there twice in five days. The sashimi was fresh and delicious, and they have fantastic oyster shots. But perhaps the best part of the meal was the service provided by Maddie, our server, and then afterwards by Todd, at the adjoining sushi bar. And the sake that Todd introduced us to was too delicious to not take home - we ended up buying a case!"

  • "Quiet and cool in its Asian atmosphere, this restaurant offer a great menu. Sit at the bar or table or a kind of sofacoach to enjoy moments between taste and relax."

  • "We decided to go back as this restaurant is our neighborhood place and because we had our discounted voucher to use. Each time we went to this restaurant, the service was terrible, but not this time. The waitress was awesome. Hopefully that stays that way because the food is excellent. If you go around 6-7pm you can go with your kids and they will love it I think. Our son loves to sit like a big boy and east some of the warm food they offer in their menu. It is also happy hours before 7pm. Later in the evening it is a nice place to eat and hang out. They have a great selection of sake."

  • "We had had dinner here once before a few years back & remembered having a Great dinner! This time we had an interesting exchange with the host when we called to let them know we would be 5min late due to heavy traffic. A lit of the fish was sourced from japan....due to the high radiation from Fukushima- we decided to get mostly veggie rolls & apps. The dishes just didn't have much flavor. Our waitress was nice & took the time to drop in w: us about saki etc.. All in all We enjoyed our meal, though this spot wouldn't be on our top 10 list for flavor~"

  • "Tried this place on an Amazon Local 1/2 off coupon. Ate too much, spent too much, but it was worth it. You can probably do very well here on any SF dining budget. The service was excellent! The food also. This is not a typical neighborhood Japanese restaurant. It is strictly a sushi bar, with very good sushi. Try it, you'll like it. If you like it quieter, go in around 6:45. This is the end of happy hour, and before the dinner crowd."

  • "We love our neighborhood sushi place with the sake place and coffee place next to it but the service is really poor. They really need to work on that if they want to keep the neighbors and anyone else continuing eating there. The sushis are all fresh, their specials are quite expensive and small portion but they are usually excellent. Coming at happy hours is the best way as this place is a bit pricey."

  • "Use to enjoy this place. We were forced to sit at communal table even while other tables were empty and we had a reservation. Ate here a year ago and it was great. Food was only average this time. Service is always good and the drinks are good, but we go for the food."

  • "Tsunami is consistently very good and high quality. Their staff doesn't change much, their food is great and the staff is knowledgeable."

  • "have been here many times. excellent food. nice presentation. fresh. service has always been excellent. this was our first time seated at the communal table. we were on the end, closest to the door. having people constantly moving around your back, and cold gusts of air against the back every time the door opened detracts from an otherwise very nice dining experience. i guess there's not much they can do about it. i'm not usually a picky seater, when it comes to what table i get placed at in a restaurant. but when you're dropping a hundred bucks on dinner for two ... i guess i just have higher expectations than what was afforded. still. it's a relatively minor gripe, for otherwise excellent food, drink and service."

  • "I have been coming to Tsunami for almost 3 years as it's a neighborhood favorite. Although it gets busy, the food is reliably delicious, the staff is friendly, and it's our go-to for late night dinner out. Our experience on Friday, however, was marked by entirely lackluster service, waiting for about 40 minutes for our sushi order to arrive, watching the sushi chefs take shots with their friends at the bar while we waited for our food, and not having any reassurance or apologies from our waitress for the long wait. She didn't offer so much as some edamame or a free dessert for having us wait for 40 minutes while the tables around us received their food. Will likely go back for the good food, but was sorely disappointed in the service."

  • "Our waitress ELAINE became very RUDE when I presented a Living Social voucher and our service went downhill from there. I paid $30 for the voucher that would be good for $60. At the end of our meal she made a point to tell my husband that she took the $60 off of the bill and my husband handed her our debit card. When she brought it back I took a second look at the bill because it still seemed very high $127.51 after (-$60) just couldn't be, we certainly did not eat $187.51 worth of Sushi! We only had 5 very small plates and still leaving hungry. We called her back over and she insisted she gave us our $60 and we owed $127.51 she looked at the bill again laughed and said oh that was my mistake I forgot to take off the $60 after all"

  • "Hamachi Kama is by far the best every single time. It's so buttery and succulent my mouth is watering just thinking about it. And this time they ran out of bowls or the piece was too big, not sure, so they put it on a plate! I was like wow, is it my birthday? So freakin' good. Oh and they have this drink I had never tried before, so I'm not sure if it's new, called the Kimiko. So good! It's light, cucumber vodka so good, and great accompaniment with dinner."

  • "I was disappointed in the portions at Tsunami. They were supertiny. The restaurant was pricey. I would recommend going to their happy hour but not worth it for dinner."

  • "Tsunami is one of my favorite restaurants in my Nopa neighborhood. Our server was very friendly, and seated me before the rest of my party arrived (which in SF is a rare occasion!). The sushi roles were all wonderful, and wine list was good, as were the delicious cocktails. I make it to Tsunami every couple of weeks and I am never disappointed!"

  • "Food was fabulous! I even lived the mushrooms! (That never happens.) it was a little to loud and cramped for my taste but the whiskey bar about made up for it (space is not exactly easy to come by here.)"

  • "I've been going to Tsunami for several years not and the majority of the time have had a great experience. The food is great, the drinks are good, nice scotch and big sake selection. Generally also have great service from some of the more tenured staff but lately they seem to have rotated new servers in and not all of them are are customer friendly. I am hoping that changes as it's a great scene and I love their sushi but want to feel like they want me to come back."

  • "First impression was decent. Came in with party of 2 around 6pm and got seated in a tiny corner table of the restaurant. We were not pleased with this seating so we asked the waitress to re-seat us, which she was happy to do. As far as food, the specialty rolls were absolutely incredible. Highly recommend the Abnormal roll. We also got some of the classic rolls, which were good, but not incredible. Happy Hour deals were great as well. Would definitely return."

  • "Our reservation put us at a table right in front of the door, which was unfortunate because everytime the door opened a cold blast of air came in. Overall, food was good, but without the $60 voucher we had our meal was not worth the original price (upwards of $100 dollars.) it took to be full."

  • "I love everything about this restaurant except the way they deliver food: instead of bringing it all out at once or even pretty closely together, Tsunami takes ALL night for even a minimum of dishes. This is extremely frustrating, especially for simple orders on a night and time when hardly anyone's there. I prefer to sample all my food at once in the order I choose instead of one at a time with long waits between dishes. No other place is so sloppy and it's not the fault of the waitresses. Still, I can't quit this place, great food and ambiance!"
