Diner Reviews
  • "Sammy completed our fabulous dinning experience. His recommendation were perfect including his wine pairings. The food was incredible. Miso glazed sea bass was one of the best I've ever had."

  • "The crab cakes made the night but the sea bass and salmon were first class, especially with the crab and shrimp bernaise sauce."

  • "We found the recommended sea bass the best prepared fish we'd ever had! Thank you, Matt!"

  • "You won't be disappointed here. Food is great and service and ambiance match. Had sea bass over crab fried rice and it was cooked to perfection. Wife had seared ahi tuna with wasabi mashed potatoes which was also perfect. Martins were tasty and with good booze. This is our third visit to this place as we travel to San Diego area 2-3 times per year from Scottsdale to get out of the summer heat and hit del mar races."

  • "Had the pleasure of enjoying an early dinner with friends at Truluck's on July 16 while on business travel in San Diego. San Diego and the surrounding area has a lot to offer in the culinary department, but if you don't make it to Truluck's you are missing a great opportunity to experience some of the best San Diego has to offer. From the delicious dirty martini with blue cheese olives, to the exceptional oysters and expertly prepared South African lobster tail this was by far the best meal I had in San Diego during my 7 day stay. Finally, I'd like to give a shout out to our engaging waiter, David, who ensured that we were well taken care of."

  • "Amazing food and even better service. Ask for Sammy and make sure you have crab."

  • "Excellent seafood with many choices. Huge seafood platters with good selection. Salmon with bear use and lump crab was excellent. Cobia also properly cooked with crispy skin. Enormous rich desserts best shared with 4-6."

  • "We'd been here once before just for late night drinks at the bar with some friends. This time we went in for our annivesary dinner and had a wonderful time. First drinks at the bar with some appetizers. Crab cakes were excellent as were the BBQ shrimp. Drinks are even better during happy hour; half price but full-leaded. Dinner was also excellent, and had very good service. Couldn't really find anything to complain about."

  • "Musical group just inside entrance very pleasing but too loud, and speakers in dining area too loud. Made worse by very loud nearby party who lacked consideration for other diners. Regardless, Truluck's justifies its reputation as one of the finest in Southern California."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our romantic dinner for 2 at Truluck's. Sam, our waiter was supberb. We both enjoyed two different fish entres and I highly recommend the carrot cake for dessert - the finishing touch by pouring cararmel sauce and sugared pecans on the cake - yummy! I wish we could of have enjoyed the bag of chocolate dish as well - it looked amazing. Thanks to Sam for making our evening a memorable one."

  • "I dined there with 4 other guests. 3 of them had the Chilean seabass and loved it. 2 of us had the steak. My friend had a medium ribeye and said it was great. I had a NY strip and thought it was disappointing. First thing I noticed was that my food (potatoes and steak) was really warm instead of hot. The potatoes tasted a little bland. I ordered my steak medium, which in my opinion should have a mostly pink center with a touch of red in the middle, came out med-well and charred on the outside (did I mention it wasn't that hot either?). I'm pretty forgiving and I didn't want to wait the extra time it would take to cook a new steak so I politely didn't mention it. Not everything was bad though. The salad and service were excellent."

  • "Great ambience, delicious food and impeccable service make Truluck's La Jolla a 5 star dining experience! We had a great corner booth that could "people watch" while enjoying creamy lobster bisque as a first course. Our entrees consisted of the gigunda king crab legs and sautéed scallops all perfectly cooked. All reasonably large portions. Although stuffed, we somehow managed to share the delicious carrot cake laced with caramel sauce and candied pecans-a true delight but easily big enough for 4 people to share!! The only downside to this restaurant was the expensive valet service- too bad the restaurant doesn't validate considering the prices."

  • "If you love crab, you will be in heaven at Truluck's. They had three kinds the night we were there, and out it in the salads, appetizers and main courses. Other seafood is exellent too. Our salmon and shrimp main courses were flavorful and expertly cooked Great bar scene-including a jazz pianist on a Wednesday night meant a great night was had by Ask for Jennie's station if you want attentive service and a good guide to the menu. She's very personable and attended to our every need."

  • "Food is great but you can't talk because the noise level is so high. The waiter was very good and everything else about the place was also above par."

  • "My wife had a great birthday dinner to kick off my 43rd year! The food was amazing and the service was equally impressive. It was vibrant and a very active place but we still were able to enjoy each other, having a great conversation! The waiter made us feel like VIPs and the complementary desert was a nice touch! Will definitely return!"

  • "My wife and I selected Truluck's for date night on a Saturday evening. We were seated in a small corner near the kitchen entrance, which was slightly disappointing, but it did not detract from our experience. Of course, we would have preferred to be in the main dining room. The meal was quite good. On the recommendation of our waiter, I had the New York strip smothered with the Ponchartrain sauce, and that was fabulous. My wife had the filet mignon, which was also very good. We completed our meal with a perfectly prepared sugar-free coconut cream pie and coffee. The coffee were served in individual french press pots."

  • "The stone crab claws are amazing, but so was everything else. My husband had surf & turf and enjoyed it very much. It is expensive but worth it for the quality of the seafood. Delicious!"

  • "Early eating and by myself. Only person in dining room. Waiter forgot 1 of 3 things I ordered. 2 of 3 things I ordered (crab mac n cheese and crab cake) were cold in the middle. Seemed they were pulled out of a refrigerator and stuck in an oven."

  • "We've been to Truluck's several times celebrating special events and food & service has always been great! Love the Monday night Crab Claw Buffets!"

  • "This is our first time in San Diego and did some research before we came. Truluck's was a restaurant that had consistent reviews. The host and hostess were very friendly. We had the seafood tower to start which has a good mix for kids and adults. We had our two children, 7&10, with us. We all ordered entrees and had the opportunity to try each others. Everything was fresh and delicious. We topped dinner off with the chocolate layered cake and a key lime pie. What made our dining experience excellent was our server Molly. She was very attentive and friendly. She made sure our kids were treated like anyone else in the restaurant. I do not drink alcohol anymore but the wine list was pretty extensive and had some great choices."

  • "4. 5 stars... This was well worth the wait (waited 1.5 hours at the bar for the restaurant to open), and I can see why the restaurant is at the top of the Best Restaurants list. The dinner and wine were excellent. The staff were knowledgeable and committed to providing a great dining experience. The only reason for less than five stars: one of the party was a vegetarian, and there were not many options for her. I look forward to dining here again."

  • "Service was amazing & the waiter was very knowledgable about the wine list as well as the content of the dishes on the menu he was also very careful and reassuring about My seafood allergy. Food was excellent and the seafood was cooked to perfection not overdone."

  • "Delicious food, understated elegant decor, great ambiance and service. The Miso Chilean Seabass and the Swordfish Ponchartrin were so good. Do order the Carrot Cake with Caramel Sauce!"

  • "Our server was Chick and he was excellent. He recommended the sea bass, which I'd never had before and I loved it. My husband had the surf and turf and the steak was perfect and there was so much crab meat. We tried the crab cake for appetizer and it was filled with a ton of crabmeat and excellent. We also had the chocolate bag and it was filled with so much fresh fruit and the almond cake was perfect. My husband is deploying so we liked the quiet atmosphere and dark setting. There isn't anything is change!"

  • "We ordered the lobster bisque, dutch harbor red king crab, NY strip and the carrot cake. The lobster bisque was one of the best we ever had it was the right amount of creaminess with lumps of lobster. The dutch harbor king crab was already scored and it was sweet, tight and juicy. The NY strip had great flavor, juicy and the texture was good. The carrot cake is OMG. My fiance has never liked carrot cake and he loved it. The portions for everything were more than enough and we had leftovers for another meal. Matthew was our wonderful server full of energy, humor and promptness. The managing partner Todd Perry was more than accommodating in showing us the options we would have for a private event. Wonderful people, place and food!"

  • "The crabcake is as good as touted, and the live crabs looked terrific, will have to try that another time. All dishes were gourmet quality. Comfortable dining room surrounded by art-fish was quite comfortable and pretty. Noise level (music) louder than I would have preferred, this would not be suitable for large groups or for the hard-of-hearing for that reason. Great Happy Hour deals."

  • "My wife and I discovered this restaurant several years ago; since then, it has become our 'GO TO' spot for those special occasions where only the finest dining experience is required. Not only is the food and wine list superb, but the ambiance and the service are simply outstanding. We have not encountered a more satisfying dining experience anywhere in San Diego."

  • "Very nice ambiance and good live music. The cosmos tasted like pure lemon zest, we sent them back but they never tasted good...so we changed our drink order. The waiter was a bit too casual, not very attentive. The orders all came out to the wrong people...the food runner told us the waiter made a mistake and he wrote down the wrong order. Awkward. Never asked for choices of sides, they just came with a veggie...no potatoes offered. The crab was very expensive and watery. The waiter up sold us on the bigger ones by telling us that if we wanted to work harder...we could order the smaller ones, but he recommended the larger. Def not worth 12 bucks each. Chefs were walking thru the restaurant with cleaning supplies and talking loudly. Bummer."

  • "Excellent seafood, excellent service. Came for our anniversary and couldn't have been better. It's pricey, so my hubby wouldn't let me go back the next day, even though I asked with a whiny but endearing sort of way.... Next time we come here on a visit, I'd definitely go again. Shrimp cocktail was great. Carrot cake was the size of my head. "

  • "I had only been here once before for their all you can eat stone crab claws with some friends. This time came back with my BF to celebrate my birthday. They had stone crab claws from a different area, and while they were great, they weren't quite as good as the other ones. Still delicious though. It comes with garlic mashed potatoes, and broccoli. Love their mustard dipping sauce. We each got their lobster bisque, also very good. Excellent service like we wish we received everywhere. Why do we have to pay this kind of money to get great service? Bugs me. "
