A word from TRU
Tru is a Mobil four star and AAA five diamond restaurant that has received four-star reviews from Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Magazine. Accolades from the James Beard House include Best New restaurant nomination in 2000 and Outstanding Service Award in 2006. Tru also has been honored with the Wine Spectator Grand Award since 2004 and with one star in the Michelin guide since 2010.

We are an adult environment with a dress code policy: jackets are required for gentleman and elegant-casual, business or evening attire for ladies.

  • "My wife and I went here for our anniversary dinner. It was our first time in Chicago and we wanted a special experience. We got it at Tru. We tried some caviar and got the wine pairing with the meal. That staff was extremely attentive and the food was adventurous for us. I can't say I liked everything, for example I didn't like the white asparagus sorbet, but I don't really like asparagus. It is very expensive ($750 after tip for the two of us) but was worth it for a rare eating experience!"

  • "My husband and I dined at TRU while visiting Chicago. The restaurant has been on my list for many years. I had first heard about it years ago while watching Gale Gand's dessert show on the Food Network. She and her husband, Rick Tramonto ran and operated TRU at the time. The chef is different now, but the experience did not disappoint. LOVED IT, from start to finish! The food, the service, and the wine list are TOP NOTCH. Absolutely a great evening! The menu is either Prix Fixe or chef's courses, and there are several wonderful mini-courses in between. All were EXCELLENT."

  • "As my title indicates, this is not just a restaurant, but a magical, culinary experience. The service was impeccable, servers being unobtrusive or friendly, as dictated by the customer. The flavors were a bust of delight to the tastebuds, the wines and other libations, delectable. The offerings were works of art. This is not an inexpensive dinner out, but for a special occasion, or if means permit, it is an experience one will never forget. It was our anniversary, and everyone at Tru made it so special, from the greeting and well wishes of the concierge, to the waitstaff, to the lovely wishes written in chocolate served with a little treat from the chef. We were treated like royalty."

I highly recommend Tru for that special occasion that you want to be a perfect evening . We loved it!"

  • "I had not been to Tru for perhaps 10 years: the cool bar is no longer in the lounge area and Gale Gand is gone. Yet, both the exquisite food, interesting wine pairing and yes, the pastry continue in the excellence that is Tru's reputation and tradition - only all appropriately modernised. Two of us had the abbreviated experience with wine pairings and the third had the prixe fixe. From the amuse bouche to the main course and desserts and afters, everything was whimsical and delicious. Even for what would call a high price - it really isn't - it is great value for those who insist on excellence."

  • "We chose the Tru experience menu and did personal wine pairings. The sommelier was excellent and her recommendations matched our taste and the food. The service was excellent and rolled with our more relaxed, less formal attitude toward dining. On the food front there were only two or three plates that really stood out and the rest were good. The courses were too large and I was unable to eat more than a bite of the last two. Most courses were trios which I felt was unnecessary and contributed to the lack of "wow" in the overall food experience. Frankly, there's better out there at lower price points."

Tru is a place where serious diners can enjoy an innovative dining experience that is satisfying to the adventurous food lover and also accessible to someone out to enjoy a unique and experience expanding exposure to food at its best. The tasting menu I had featured a beautifully presented set of openers including seasonal, early summer, fruits and herbs. The perky toe crab starter was simply delicious. This was followed by a savory cauliflower and caviar dish accompanied by mussels. This came along with beef and black truffle. later courses were similarly outstanding. Try it!"

  • "My wife and I went to Tru to celebrate our anniversary. We had the Tru experience and added caviar for a starter. The presentation was very nice and the taste and quality of the food was excellent. The service was attentive. It was quiet enough so we could have a nice conversation. While Tru has one Michelin star my wife and I agree our experience at Tru was better than at some two star restaurants we have dined at. It is pricey but in line with other restaurants of the same caliber."

  • "Tru aims for perfection and comes pretty close. We dined here on a busy Saturday night. First, the room is beautiful and you are immediately made to feel welcome. My wife and I had the 11 course "Experience" with wine pairings. Most of the courses were truly outstanding and the rest were extremely good. The pacing of the food was always almost perfect and unlike some tasting menus the portions were not too large. The service was almost always spot on. To be hones we did have a couple of glitches in the service, but when they were brought to the attention of management, they were extremely apologetic and did everything to make things right. We would recommend Tru without hesitation to anyone who wants an exceptional dining experience."

  • "We have been going to Tru since Rick Tramonto was there. Our last experience was disappointing. First, the techno music seems inconsistent with a fine dining establishment. Second, the flavor combinations in the food seemed to battle one another, rather than create a symbiotic relationship. Third, the excessive use of 'smoke' (liquid nitrogen?) was dramatic the first time, but not the third. Also, aromas from the adjacent table did not enhance our dining experience. Lastly, and most fortunately, the service was, as always, attentive, discreet, and personable; the best part of the evening."

Everyone else had picked the tasting menu experience around us, it was interesting seeing everyone else having the same food as us around us. That didn't make us feel the food was peculiarly made for us. It was pretty disappointing that the server did not tell us trout roe came with the tasting menu, and still had recommended it during the caviar course (optional) when we asked her which roe would go well with the caviar we picked.. i It wasn't about the money since the food was so expensive anyways, but we expected the server to think on customers behalf."

  • "The list of 2- and 3-Michelin star restaurants in Chicago continues to grow, but TRU has been occupying that space for a long time. It continues to create and serve wonderfully varied dishes and wine pairings with elegance and style. While you can certainly enjoy the short prix fixe menu, I think the main attraction at restaurants of this level is the tasting menu, here called the TRU Experience, which is also available in an abbreviated form. Not everyone like a 12 course (small plates), 3 hour dining experience, but, if you do, go to TRU. I can quibble with details - a short rib dish served with an inventive, but ultimately unsuccessful, white wine pairing - but from the moment they welcome you to the last bite, dining at TRU is marvelous"

  • "The night before we dined at Tru, we had reservations at another highly acclaimed restaurant. It was absolutely amazing. We then showed up to Tru the next night and immediately knew it was going to be a different experience. The waiter showed up to our table and had such an arrogant way about him that turned us off immediately. We told him that we would do the 11 course tasting with wine parings and there was no excitement or confirmation of our decision, just walked away straight faced. The servers dropped silverware and spilled sauces left and right. It was not what we had expected. And for the price, I expect perfection. Could have had better service at a lower end restaurant. The bathrooms had damages in them as well. Not recommended."
