  • "My wife and I have eaten at TRU many times over the years, and the experience has always been spectacular. We were sorry to see that the restaurant just isn't what it used to be. We used to enjoy watching the ballet in the dining room that was the service, but there were so many mistakes made during our last visit that it easily explained why the dining room was half empty on a Friday evening. They served courses before we even had wine on the table for our pairings, couldn't keep track of still or sparkling water, and seemed to have given up on the level of service that was once delivered at this establishment. I'm sorry to say that this was our last visit to TRU, as it is not longer worth the price of admission."

  • "Tru lived up to it's reputation as one of the premier fine dining spots in Chicago. The attention to detail and the service was wonderful, as was the food. However, I found the physical ambiance a bit stark:( No flowers or candles on the table."

  • "Tru is just not dinner it's an experience. You have to be a foodie to love it."

  • "We have been wanting to dine at Tru for years. We grew up around the Chicago suburbs and moved to Portland, OR seven years ago without ever getting the chance. Finally! We were not disappointed. Truly a flawless experience and well worth the wait. The food is all about perfect execution. Not a lot of gimmicks going on here, just perfection on the plate. There aren't even distracting garnishes on the place. This chef wants his craft to shine through, and it does. Of course, service is outstanding. Watching the servers, sommelier, and maitre d is like watching a choreographed dance on the dining room floor. Beautiful. Thank you, Tru, for making our anniversary so special. We will never forget it!"

  • "Loved the food and service! The Muscovy duck was perfect!"

  • "Lovely atmosphere, but not the experience I had before. Not enough food. The coordination of service was not as experienced in the past. I was embarrased, as I had recommended that my friends join us, and it just wasn't worth the $600 for dinner for 4. Each one of us went home and ate something else, as we were all still hungry. I will never go back!"

  • "My wife and I went here for our anniversary dinner. It was our first time in Chicago and we wanted a special experience. We got it at Tru. We tried some caviar and got the wine pairing with the meal. That staff was extremely attentive and the food was adventurous for us. I can't say I liked everything, for example I didn't like the white asparagus sorbet, but I don't really like asparagus. It is very expensive ($750 after tip for the two of us) but was worth it for a rare eating experience!"

  • "We are food travelers and do a lot of research to a great dining experience. Food is good but overprice. Cold ambiance. Up-tight service. nice personnal attention. Misplaced efforts."

  • "Maybe they were off this night, but tasting menu was largely inedible and wine pairings were poor. Art collection saved the experience for us, but very disappointing overall."

  • "My husband and I dined at TRU while visiting Chicago. The restaurant has been on my list for many years. I had first heard about it years ago while watching Gale Gand's dessert show on the Food Network. She and her husband, Rick Tramonto ran and operated TRU at the time. The chef is different now, but the experience did not disappoint. LOVED IT, from start to finish! The food, the service, and the wine list are TOP NOTCH. Absolutely a great evening! The menu is either Prix Fixe or chef's courses, and there are several wonderful mini-courses in between. All were EXCELLENT."

  • "As my title indicates, this is not just a restaurant, but a magical, culinary experience. The service was impeccable, servers being unobtrusive or friendly, as dictated by the customer. The flavors were a bust of delight to the tastebuds, the wines and other libations, delectable. The offerings were works of art. This is not an inexpensive dinner out, but for a special occasion, or if means permit, it is an experience one will never forget. It was our anniversary, and everyone at Tru made it so special, from the greeting and well wishes of the concierge, to the waitstaff, to the lovely wishes written in chocolate served with a little treat from the chef. We were treated like royalty."

  • "My wife has has Tru on her restaurant bucket list so for our 45th anniversary we decided to give it a try. From beginning to end our dinning experience was outstanding. The food presentations were magnificent and the food preparation and taste were marvelous. The service was so elite yet not stiff or uncomfortable but friendly. I highly recommend Tru for that special occasion that you want to be a perfect evening . We loved it!"

  • "I had not been to Tru for perhaps 10 years: the cool bar is no longer in the lounge area and Gale Gand is gone. Yet, both the exquisite food, interesting wine pairing and yes, the pastry continue in the excellence that is Tru's reputation and tradition - only all appropriately modernised. Two of us had the abbreviated experience with wine pairings and the third had the prixe fixe. From the amuse bouche to the main course and desserts and afters, everything was whimsical and delicious. Even for what would call a high price - it really isn't - it is great value for those who insist on excellence."

  • "The food was adventure but a bit pricey. The service was excellent."

  • "TRU offers great service and the food's presentation is amazing. Unfortunately the food quality that's not match the rest. It is normal, average. The overall experience is not really among the best in a city like Chicago."

  • "A perfect place for a special occasion. You eat very well in a very nice setting. They are taking care of you for all. (maybe a little bit too much..)"

  • "I dined at Tru, enjoying the full tasting menu. The service was highly professional and also friendly without a sense of stiffness of too much formality. Tru is a place where serious diners can enjoy an innovative dining experience that is satisfying to the adventurous food lover and also accessible to someone out to enjoy a unique and experience expanding exposure to food at its best. The tasting menu I had featured a beautifully presented set of openers including seasonal, early summer, fruits and herbs. The perky toe crab starter was simply delicious. This was followed by a savory cauliflower and caviar dish accompanied by mussels. This came along with beef and black truffle. later courses were similarly outstanding. Try it!"

  • "It was all very tasty, but I expect more for $400 to $500 with tip for a couple. Service was excellent."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "We chose the Tru experience menu and did personal wine pairings. The sommelier was excellent and her recommendations matched our taste and the food. The service was excellent and rolled with our more relaxed, less formal attitude toward dining. On the food front there were only two or three plates that really stood out and the rest were good. The courses were too large and I was unable to eat more than a bite of the last two. Most courses were trios which I felt was unnecessary and contributed to the lack of "wow" in the overall food experience. Frankly, there's better out there at lower price points."

  • "My wife and I went to Tru to celebrate our anniversary. We had the Tru experience and added caviar for a starter. The presentation was very nice and the taste and quality of the food was excellent. The service was attentive. It was quiet enough so we could have a nice conversation. While Tru has one Michelin star my wife and I agree our experience at Tru was better than at some two star restaurants we have dined at. It is pricey but in line with other restaurants of the same caliber."

  • "Food lacks the taste impact of the top Chefs. Presentation memorable, dishes not. Winelist splendid but overpriced. Sommelier unfriendly and reactive rather than suggested wine. Occasional inexperienced waiter. Cheese cart offering splendid."

  • "Worth the wait for a reservation. Wonderful art collection."

  • "Tru aims for perfection and comes pretty close. We dined here on a busy Saturday night. First, the room is beautiful and you are immediately made to feel welcome. My wife and I had the 11 course "Experience" with wine pairings. Most of the courses were truly outstanding and the rest were extremely good. The pacing of the food was always almost perfect and unlike some tasting menus the portions were not too large. The service was almost always spot on. To be hones we did have a couple of glitches in the service, but when they were brought to the attention of management, they were extremely apologetic and did everything to make things right. We would recommend Tru without hesitation to anyone who wants an exceptional dining experience."

  • "We have been going to Tru since Rick Tramonto was there. Our last experience was disappointing. First, the techno music seems inconsistent with a fine dining establishment. Second, the flavor combinations in the food seemed to battle one another, rather than create a symbiotic relationship. Third, the excessive use of 'smoke' (liquid nitrogen?) was dramatic the first time, but not the third. Also, aromas from the adjacent table did not enhance our dining experience. Lastly, and most fortunately, the service was, as always, attentive, discreet, and personable; the best part of the evening."

  • "Great food and wonderful wines we wouldnt have tried otherwise and were such a great surprise especially the way they pair them with the food. The only low was that even after calling several times to make sure my husband would not see prices when he asked for a menu to follow what we were eating from their long tasting menu, they brought one with prices. Attention to detail in special ocassions is very important for me. "

  • "We had the best anniversary dinner we've ever had. It was absolutely amazing. The food fantastic, the service impeccable, and the professionalism and pride in the work they do inspiring. I have already started to tell my friends that for a wonderful treat, go to TRU."

  • "Perfection unique exquisite dining experience. Simple yet over the top. Feast for the senses and palettes. Wine pairing highly recommended. Definitely a Tru dining culinary event. "

  • "Some of the most creative and earthy platings I've ever seen. Also amazingly creative plays on textures and temperatures made for a really unique dining experience. I can see how some people might complain that some dishes miss the mark on flavor, and while some dishes show more subtle flavors, there is no shortage of bold dishes to enjoy. It's a meal that you will talk about long after you leave, and I always think that's a good thing."

  • "My husband and I have never been to a restaurant like this. The food was exquisite and the wine pairings were perfection. The service was impeccable. The evening was an expensive one, but we certainly got every penny's worth. From the personalized menu to the champagne, the experience could only be described as decadent. It was an amazing anniversary dinner!"

  • "I Took my husband their for his birthday and everything from start to finish was excellent. They created personalized menus for us for the dinner and even made special accommodations such as an abbreviated wine pairing as I'm a total light weight. Would highly recommend!"

  • "We had a beautiful experience at TRU. The food was delicious."
    Dined on 4/18/2014
  • "We did full experience (11 courses). Food and service were very good to excellent; staff was friendly but not instrusive. Décor/ambience was sterile and surprisingly unimpressive. Wine pairings were hit or miss but staff knowledgable and most were well chosen. Desserts were disappointing given the quality of the other courses. Glad I went but would not rush back."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "Take the tasting menu. It is very odd that several courses there were too salty, including the wagyu beef, the sunchoke, and the main course of venison. And the passionate marshmallow is too heavy. It could be my picky taste. But it shouldn't have been so in tru as we expected."

  • "Went there for our anniversary. My wife ordered on the vegetarian menu and I ordered using the regular menu. We both had the wine pairings. We had an amazing, romantic experience. Very fun. Excellent food. Great service."
