A word from TRU
Tru is a Mobil four star and AAA five diamond restaurant that has received four-star reviews from Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Magazine. Accolades from the James Beard House include Best New restaurant nomination in 2000 and Outstanding Service Award in 2006. Tru also has been honored with the Wine Spectator Grand Award since 2004 and with one star in the Michelin guide since 2010.

We are an adult environment with a dress code policy: jackets are required for gentleman and elegant-casual, business or evening attire for ladies.

Wine pairings were hit or miss but staff knowledgable and most were well chosen. Desserts were disappointing given the quality of the other courses. Glad I went but would not rush back."

  • "Take the tasting menu. It is very odd that several courses there were too salty, including the wagyu beef, the sunchoke, and the main course of venison. And the passionate marshmallow is too heavy. It could be my picky taste. But it shouldn't have been so in tru as we expected."

Everyone else had picked the tasting menu experience around us, it was interesting seeing everyone else having the same food as us around us. That didn't make us feel the food was peculiarly made for us. It was pretty disappointing that the server did not tell us trout roe came with the tasting menu, and still had recommended it during the caviar course (optional) when we asked her which roe would go well with the caviar we picked.. i It wasn't about the money since the food was so expensive anyways, but we expected the server to think on customers behalf."

  • "The list of 2- and 3-Michelin star restaurants in Chicago continues to grow, but TRU has been occupying that space for a long time. It continues to create and serve wonderfully varied dishes and wine pairings with elegance and style. While you can certainly enjoy the short prix fixe menu, I think the main attraction at restaurants of this level is the tasting menu, here called the TRU Experience, which is also available in an abbreviated form. Not everyone like a 12 course (small plates), 3 hour dining experience, but, if you do, go to TRU. I can quibble with details - a short rib dish served with an inventive, but ultimately unsuccessful, white wine pairing - but from the moment they welcome you to the last bite, dining at TRU is marvelous"

  • "The night before we dined at Tru, we had reservations at another highly acclaimed restaurant. It was absolutely amazing. We then showed up to Tru the next night and immediately knew it was going to be a different experience. The waiter showed up to our table and had such an arrogant way about him that turned us off immediately. We told him that we would do the 11 course tasting with wine parings and there was no excitement or confirmation of our decision, just walked away straight faced. The servers dropped silverware and spilled sauces left and right. It was not what we had expected. And for the price, I expect perfection. Could have had better service at a lower end restaurant. The bathrooms had damages in them as well. Not recommended."

  • "Tru was amazing. We had the full experience and although it was very expensive (about $900 for 2 with wine pairings) it was an experience of a life time! My only issue is that they covered all the windows so it's just a big white room with really no views, at the same time this keeps it more intimate because people passing by on the street can't just look through the window at you eating. But it made it a little claustrophobic."

The courses are each unique, tasty and presented in extraordinary ways. Very good for someone who wants to impress with unusual combinations plated in over the top ways. Not particularly good for someone who just wants a really great meal and doesn't need or want all the extravagance. Seems like you're paying for all this (and paying BIG) instead of a great gourmet meal. Maybe great for some folks, but not us. Too many great restaurants in Chicago..."

  • "I took my wife to Tru for our third wedding Anniversary dinner and it was the most disappointing dining experience I've had to date. The ambiance was simple and modern but nothing to write home about (I get it, the food is what is suppose to be featured, not the restaurant but come on). The food was okay but for $580 bucks (for two) you want the ingredients to be special too. The ingredients were all low budget and the preparation was not unique enough to mask this point. The wine pairing was insulting. Everything tasted sweet and bland like kool-aid. If you want the special multi-course special dining experience, go to Next."

  • "We had the "Experience"......Outstanding courses included foie gras with foam, caviar/sea urchin, beef tartare with white truffle, langoustine with savoy cabbage, skate wing....very good cheese selection...and the marshmallow was fun and tasty. All presentations were excellent and innovative Despite what other reviewers indicated, the overall quality was excellent, comparable to L2O Would definitely repeat"

  • "We went to Tru for my birthday and were greeted with a happy birthday wish. The menu had "Happy Birthday, xxxx" imprinted. We chose the chef's menu, which was 11 courses of Wow! Each presentation was more fantastic than the previous. The food was delicious, the presentation was beyond description. The plating was amazing. The staff communicated much by eye contact, that dazzles the mind. We were taken on a food trip that included such delectable items as Maine diver scallop with caviar and sea urchin and eastern skate wing with black truffle. The braised wagyu beef short rib with Juniper melted in your mouth. In the end, I was presented a tiny dessert with Happy Birthday written on the plate. It was a dining experience from heaven."

The service was suburb, the food was fabuous - there was nothing we were served that did not have wonderful flavor. We are "foodies" in that we love cuisine but not that we can explain in the appropriate terms why the dinner was so wonderful. We brought friends that had never been to TRU and there were clearly impressed. And we had fun....."

  • "This restaurant is a wonderful experience. Service was the best I have ever seen. The staff was attentive and anticipated our every desire without being intrusive. The food was exquisite. We had the modified tasting and the prix fixe meals. My only disappointment was that my marshmallow dessert filled with passion fruit was not my favorite as I am not a marshmallow lover. It was good although the numerous other desserts that followed were far superior. Too bad I was too full to eat much, even my tiny birthday cake! They, however, were gracious enough to provide a box to take them home. Special place for a special occasion. They even had our coats and car ready as we left!"

  • "It was a terrific meal, but I missed being able to order individual entrees. Only two Prix Fixe options available. The pace of the meal seemed a little rushed. Service was not as unobtrusive as before. There were only 7 other tables so it is hard to understand why the rush. Lighting seemed brighter, dining room, while still beautiful is looking a little dated (blue velvet banquet). Would think twice before going back. Better options in Chicago at this price point ($600.00 + for two).."

The wine parings were interesting, mostly whites, which challenged our convention, but for us, the pairings worked very well. The cheese selections paired with apple cider bubbly was phenomenal!"

  • "We went there for our wedding anniversary. I wanted something special for my wife and the experience clearly met my expectations. The food is amazing. The service is attentive without being intrusive. The wine list was also impressive and the sommelier does know his part. TRU is certainly worth its star, maybe even more for the wine list, service, main course and dessert. The quality of the raw ingredients was outstanding which may have been the Achilles' heel for the starter which looked a bit too "deconstructed" and may have relied too much on the quality and freshness of the ingredients. All in all, an amazing experience and considering the overall outstanding quality of the food, wine and staff, I can't wait to watch the next step up."

  • "We paid about $250 per person including wine,max and tip. As such, the bar was quite high, and in summary this dinner was not the equal of dinners we've had at Per Se, at Alinea, at Charlie Trotter, etc. While the food was in some cases awesome (delightful, creative, subtle), way too much salt and slipshod service (relative to the standard for a restaurant with Tru's ambitions) made me feel like the dinner wasn't particularly good."

  • "The room was so cold that the service was not relaxing and leisurely but seemed excruciatingly slow because we were all freezing. We were not alone. Everyone in the restaurant were wearing shawls or jackets. We asked several times for the temperature to be adjusted. We retrieved our winter jackets from coat-check to wear while dining....finally we just started asking for our check (had to ask 3 times before it was finally brought to us). We had 6:30 reservations and were not able to finally leave until 10:30; way too long to be painfully cold."

  • "The food just wasn't good. From the wrong texture (the beauty of sorrel is lost as snow) to tastes that just weren't impressive. I had multiple dishes that I didn't consume because they were unpalatable, and we all agreed we wouldn't go back for overwrought, trying-to-be-edgy food that missed the mark. We were casually discussing at the table how one party member is starting to think about retiring. Staff must have overheard and announced congratulations, gave him a dessert scrawled with "happy retirement" and printed our menus (which we left there) with the same. Except...he's not retiring and we certainly didn't tell them it was a retirement party and he was quite mortified by this display. Eavesdropping does not good service make."

  • "Simply stated, was the best dining experience we have ever had. Attention to detail is amazing, from highly coordinated teams of servers, to decor, to presentation of the courses. The wine list is extensive and the pairings were outstanding. This was also the most expensive dinner we have have indulged in, but was a special occasion and Tru did not disappoint. They came highly recommended (a chef acquaintance in Dallas had mentioned as his favorite restaurant)."

  • "My sister and I took each other to Tru to celebrate our birthdays. We chose the mini-fixed price dinner which had seven courses. Though the portions are small, the flavors and presentation were superb and we felt that we had enough to satisfy. The wine list was endless and the sommelier assisted us in making selections which we made by the glass since our tastes in wine are very different. They brought us a dessert with a candle for our birthday celebration - a very nice touch. The service was outstanding and the pacing of the meal was perfect. All in all, it was a lovely dining experience!"

  • "This was our second trip to Tru. Both my husband and I love creative food and the 3-4 hour tasting menu experience. However, this time the wait staff seemed a bit stuffy. Particularly the young lady doing the wine paring and presentation. She was not engaging whatsoever and she just poured the wine with the briefest of description and left. More disappointing was that of 11 courses offered only one course had a red wine. At least 3 courses had wines paired that we just did not think paired well at all. This has never happened to us at a fine dining restaurant such as Tru. For a meal that costs $850 (for 2 people) before tip I expect the wine pairing to be spot on and the staff pouring the wine to be friendly."
