Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant is located on the second floor overlooking the boston commons - great view. The food was superb and the service was great. Only downfall is the noise level was a little high, it was difficult to hear my guest. It was also a Saturday night dinner time"

  • "The appetizers were fantastic - we had the duck confit salad and the short ribs with pasta and for the mains I had the cassoulet which was fantastic and my wife had the scallops. The wine pairings were spot on and reasonably priced. Our waitress was attentive but not overly friendly and her recommendations were perfect. For dessert my wife and I split the chocolate soufflé which was worth the wait."

  • "I love the French feeling of the bistro, seating guests in the cozy upstairs dining room first. Watching the kitchen, I was struck by the good nature of the chefs. Our table was immediately struck by the service. One person designated to spoon butter onto our bread plates. A total of 4 persons waited on us, butter, water, bread, wines, etc. Everything arrived at the right time. The menu had several attractive dishes, although we did not find any vegetarian entree option. Our "gourmand" group all liked their dishes. I loved the idea that every dish on the menu had a recommended wine pairing. 3 of us shared a great rioja with excellent lamb. One had delicious scallops with suggested white. We will be back!"

  • "Unfortunately, this restaurant left a lot to be admired. The food was mediocre and overpriced. The noise from the kitchen and the waiters rushing around made it for an unrelaxing and unpleasant dining experience. The wines by the glass were unimpressive. The only enjoyable part of dinner were the bread rolls, sadly. And, our server was very polite and nice. But at the price tag of this restaurant, the food and the ambiance have to be exceptional to want to spend money and time and unfortunately, I would not recommend this place. There are many great french restaurants in Boston but this is not one of them."

  • "Every time I go, I like the food and feel mixed about the experience. Wine list too high end without good alternative medium priced . Service is just not friendly and somewhat spotty. Should not be at this level of cost. Great setting and excellent meal!"

  • "We dined at Troquet for the first time before going to the theatre. The staff is pleasant and efficient. The food was delicious from the Maine lobster crepe to the Peking Duck and Painted Beef. The amount of food was just right and the presentation was lovely. The valet service was superb and our car was waiting for us as we came out of the theatre. A great night and we will be back!"

  • "Food nearly on par with the likes of L'Espalier at half the cost. We had the 5-course tasting menu with wine pairings, which was totally awesome and highly recommended. Wait staff was attentive and friendly after a short wait after sitting down. Unfortunately we were seated at the back of the dining room neat the kitchen, away from the huge windows looking on the Commons; next time we'll know to reserve earlier and request a seat there. We did not try the cheese tray, which we heard was excellent... next time for sure!"

  • "The focus at this restaurant is all about the food and ofcourse the wine list. The decor is pretty basic and unless you get a table overlooking the Boston Common, the setting is not ideal. The service was exceptional and our waiter was knowledgeable specially about the wine pairings. We would definitely go back !"

  • "We have thought about going to this restaurant for many years, but it never worked out. We were delighted wtth perfectly delicious dinners and wine pairings! We would certainly plan to dine there again and suggest it to friends. Great location - easy to get there on the T. Near to theaters for pre or post theater meals."

  • "The food was great, the service perfect and the location ideal. The decor and dining room was less then desirable. But overall we had a great time."

  • "It is what you can expect from a good and popular restaurant on Friday night - excellent food, noisy and lively, very friendly but tired waiters."

  • "Dinner was fabulous as usual as well as ambiance. Excellent wines are available by the glass, 2 and 4 ounces so you can try several. Everything was outstanding."

  • "Everything was outstanding from the valet parking to the fabulous dessert. The diver scallops were to die for and ample with the pasta and shrimp accompanying it. The beef dish was reported to be excellent as well. Save room for the warm rolls. The dessert menu contained an unusual combination of flavors. We split a yummy chocolate cake with lemon curd , dark and bittersweet chocolate and mocha. Very rich, unusual and perfect for splitting. Food is a little pricey but the ambience, service and elegance of the food made it well worth it."

  • "Nice view of the commons! Went pre-theatre. They asked if we were going to a show and timed everything perfectly. Octopus appetizer and pasta app were excellent. The suckling pig was good but a little dry tough to live up to the name of the entree. I'm sure the pig agrees with me! A nice place to try. Menu looked interesting. A bit boston pricey but that's life these days."

  • "I struggled to sort through all the available dining options for Valentine's Day in Boston and eventually settled on Troquet. Am I ever glad I did. The wait staff was extremely helpful in sorting through our multiple layers of dietary issues between us. Rick (our waiter) was also friendly and knowledgeable. The 3 course meal was well paced and each course brought flavorful, well-portioned delights. We had a table next to the big window overlooking the Common, which was nice even in winter. While the restaurant was packed, we still had an intimate, romantic evening highlighted by delicious French food. We'll be back again!"

  • "We ordered 5 courses (we alerted the staff of a shellfish intolerance and they did a good job of offering us nice alternatives) with wine pairings. Highlights: the smooth Kompachi, the tender braised octopus, the amazing crispiness of the rice-encrusted halibut (this really was magnificent,) the rich flavor of the short rib, and the medium-rare buffalo (potatoes/carrots were tender but not over done and the sauce was rich and flavorful.) The food was excellent overall as were wine pairings. We've had the 5 and 7 course tastings in the past and highly recommend them. You don't need more than the 2 oz. pours you get with the pairings, it's the perfect amount to make it all the way through every course of the meal and still feel full/satisfied."

  • "My husband and I used to be surprised that Troquet doesn't get better reviews, but after our Valentines Day meal, we get it. We were at Troquet for Valentines Day last year and were offered the exact same menu, with no additions or specials, except that they charged an exorbitant fee for a tasting menu we only ordered because we were told it would offer surprises not found on the menu. Not true. It's time to change up the menu!"

  • "Tight up there with some of the best in NYC. My wife and I would go back there 7 days a week. Great wine list, great service, artfuly presented food, not to mention how scrumptious it was. Five Stars for the entire establishment."

  • "Food was good! We had fois gras for appetizer. Lamb for dinner - cooked to perfection and great presentation. And scallops, also delicious. Chocolate souffle for dessert. Overall a good experience, service was attentive. But nothing that would make me want to go back unless I had theatre tickets. I was surprised - not pleasantly - by the decor. Impersonal, no charm and nothing that reminded me of a French restaurant."

  • "My wife and I celebrated an early Valentine's this past Saturday at Troquet and loved it! The cavatelli appetizer was amazing in taste and texture (*must have again). The entrees (duo of beef and halibut) were instant classics (clearly a classic French cuisine foundation) with layers of flavor. The wine list is special in terms of the smaller vineyards represented and for its rather hefty prices. Thankfully, a wide set of wines-by-the-glass is available. I only wish they featured a carafe option to really make this a classic French Bistro. Oh, double up on your heart medication, as the desserts are de-lici-ous (as is the ridiculously huge portion of butter carved out for the crusty bread)! Maybe triple it if you indulge in the cheese plate!"

  • "We've eaten here a few times this year. Service is attentive. Everyone smiles at you. The food is delicious. Wine list is excellent. It's the only place in the theatre district that I would recommend."

  • "We wanted delectable food and an unhurried dining experience before the theater. We were not disappointed. As we ascended the stairs to the second floor, passing the open kitchen at the top, we turned toward the dining room where the generous windows open onto the Common. That night, the treetops sparkled with snow. The service was friendly, if not overly friendly, and the bread-and-butter-bearer with curled spoon did seem a strange throwback to a different era. The food was delicious (try the celery root soup with shrimp and lobster; the duck done two ways; the apple tarte tatin with homemade ice-creams and cranberries); the textures and colors delighted the senses; and the experience was well worth the price. We'll be back!"

  • "Troquet has excellent food & wine, and overall was a nice place for a date. Unfortunately, it was kinda loud & the table seemed unusually high which made it awkward to eat at. If those things changed it would be an overall 5. Compliments to the chef!"

  • "We took some out-of-town business colleagues to Troquet for a great dining experience with a fabulous view of the Boston Garden. The food and service were exceptional. The wine list and recommendations were spot on. Loved watching the cooks pull the meals together! Will definitely be back."

  • "Wine list over-rated. Food is not quite where it's reputation is. I had not been there for a few years and took some friends from San Francisco there. Given the food they are used to, I wish I had taken them elsewhere. I think Troquet is on the decline. The service was underwhelming. The servers don't know their stuff about the menu or food."

  • "While the menu looks limited, the range of options can satisfy any palate. We sampled multiple appetizers, entres, and desserts, with the suckling pig and cheese plates being the highlight. Offered by the glass that evening, along with about 50 other wines, was a nearly 100 year old port. The bottle selection was truly amazing, and would've been slightly overwhelming was it not for our very helpful server. Definitely recommend, although the space does not feel ideally situated for parties larger than four."

  • "Food was outstanding. We went early before a play at Opera House so restaurant was quiet. Perfect for pre-theater dinner."
    Dined on 1/16/2014
  • "A very good restaurant, with good food but the service was snobbish and a little unfair. They did sit another group in a table we requested just because they knew them, regardless of the fact that we arrived earlier. Not good! We did not have a chance to request a specific table when we booked the table on line at Open Table."

  • "This places lives up to its reputation on both fronts. Rack of Lamb, oysters, Krug and a modestly priced 82 Beycheville. Who can ask for more."

  • "We are in the theater district several times a year and to make it a special night we almost always dine in the area. Looking to try something different we reserved a table for two at Troquet. The food was fantastic and our server timed everything so we could make the most of our dining experience and still make the show on time. We plan on returning to this restaurant in the near future."

  • "Was looking forward to our first encounter. Had been on our list for quite awhile The evening did not disappoint. Food was as expected eclectic and delicious. Suckling pig was fantastick. Wait staff up to par Only negative was the setting. Had just eaten at Deauxave the week before which is on par with Troquet but brand new decor Dining room could use a face lift"

  • "We were glad to have a NYE table at Troquet... BUT didn't know Boylston was barricaded for fireworks. With parking, crowd we were very late and afraid we'd lost our reservation. We put the maitre'd in a real pickle as they were fully booked but he overcame the challenge somehow and once seated welcomed us with a flute of champagne! Things just got better with every course, a fine wine from their list and three wonderful courses from their New Years prix fixe including Nantucket bay scallops with blank squid ink pasta, Nunavit wild arctic char, all-natural Oregon beef duo with a braised short rib, best I'd ever tasted - unlike the 'stew beef' some restaurants serve. Dessert was decadent yet light. Thanks for a great NYE Troquet!"

  • "with everything but the food. For Troquet prices service should be impeccable(not), ambience should be warm and inviting(not), and loud, boisterous patrons should be seated in another more remote space That said, when we are craving some of the best cuisine and give up caring about the rest of the experience (which is not often) we'll be back."

  • "Decent upscale cuisine for Boston. They have the right idea for portion size and they do well with combining flavors to compliment the main ingredient. Preparation of the main ingredient is top notch. What the restaurant lacks in continuous originality, it makes up for with a top notch wine selection - perhaps the best I've seen in Boston. The service is prompt and friendly, but is lagging and its weakest link. However, this is a city-wide phenomenon. Boston isn't a michelin star kinda city, unfortunately."
