Diner Reviews
  • "We were seated quickly, and next to a window as I had requested in my reservation. Food runs anywhere from $8-21 depending on what you get. The appetizers were delicious and great to share. Entree portions run huge. Food was tasty, especially the chips and trio of salsas they give you upon sitting down. Service was for the most part good. Our server made our margaritas sweeter when asked, and came around to refill our waters a number of times. My only critique is that he and other employees kept coming by to clear plates when we haven't finished what was left on the table. We had to keep telling them we were still working on it. They seemed to be rushing people."

  • "I would go back. With a reservation, my party was able to sit right down. The complimentary chips and salsa were delicious. Make sure to try the scallops as an app. Everything was tasty and the service was great!"

  • "The food is very good. Pricing is fair. It was a bit noisy but it was a vibrant crowd."

  • "Food was excellent. I had the Mole chicken which was super tender and juicy and slathered with tasty mole sauce. Margarita was also good but tasted a bit weak on alcohol content. It's a very busy, bustling restaurant. Probably not a good place for deep conversations as the noise level was quite high, but it's a fun, energetic place to go with your friends."

  • "This place ROCKS! Always busy, so at night make sure you have a reservation. Great happy hour too! The garlic shrimp and the chicken mole are to die for."

  • "Very good service, margaritas, chips & salsa, especially the chile de arbol salsa. One of the best I've tasted!"

  • "Have been a long-time Mexican restaurant fan, grew up in So. Cal., but this place is only so-so. The salsas are all great but food is average at best. Noise level for dinner is 4 bombs, so don't even count on talking to your friends at the table. Reservations highly recommended, otherwise average waits are 45 mins to one hour."

  • "One of my all-time favorite Mexican restaurants in the city that breaks away from the Mission taqueria trend. Their chili verde is the closest version to my father's I've found in any restaurant setting - it's incredible and the one thing you should absolutely order. As for the margaritas, freshly made with agave and their well is El Jimador, no cheap alternatives for this place. The staff is incredible. You should absolutely plan to make a reservation, though, if it's any night of the week from Wed-Sun. The bar can be hit or miss with seating, but it's a great spot to queue while you wait for your table!"

  • "Great place to have a drink or dinner downtown. The atmosphere is loud but fun. Food is delicious and customizable (without any hesitation). Warm tortilla's, flavorful beans, variety of salsa, and "fresh" tasting tortilla chips.... all good before even talking about the entrees, which is just as great if not better. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Overall it was good Mexican food in downtown with a fun, upbeat environment."

  • "Believe it or not, in San Francisco, aside from the typical taqueria in the Mission district, we don't have enough Mexican restaurants that are, well, Americanized Mexican food. This fits the bill. Don't get me wrong! their salsas are better than even the most 'Mex.' places anywhere, and they bring a trio to your table with crispy chips. Food is good and so are the Margaritas at reasonable prices. Tropisueño is our to go to Mexican in SF when in the downtown area."

  • "Have loved Trop for years, and still do, but my last two visits have not been as good. Something with the food has changed. Hopefully next time it will be back to the old Trop I remember"

  • "Thanks to my colleagues who booked meetings here on back to back days. Enjoyed incredible entrees both days. Just a truly fabulous and delicious place to dine."

  • "Food here was great, service a bit slow at times but the place was absolutely packed. Definitely need a reservation."

  • "The level of service was outstanding. They never left the table alone through the entire meal. If we asked for more of anything they brought it and not just our waiter; the entire wait staff. Stupendous. The food was very good as well."

  • "Excellent and unusual menu. Very noisy, had to yell to talk. Fun anyway. Scallops with plantain chorizo was incredible."

  • "The place is great for lunch. First time eating here at dinner. The place was extremely loud. Had to yell to hear my guest. Ordered ceviche. Uhhhh I would hope that for $11 bucks it would have been more than a sample size. After tasting the ceviche... I was still hungry so ordered a side of rice and beans. The only good thing is that the food was out with in 10 minutes. Bad thing to that... Everything was soooooo reheated that the rice was hard and tasteless. My beans were ok. Ordered house margaritas.... Thanks for the watered down fruit drink. Over all I left disappointed."

  • "I'm confused on why this place is so packed all the time. The food we had was of very low quality. The meat in the dishes we had was very fatty. Bit into big chunks of fat on every dish. Won't be back."

  • "I ordered the pork chop. We eat out a lot and I am usually disappointed at other restaurants that are famous for their pork chops. This was so good it tasted like a veal chop! Very thick, cooked to perfection, melted in my mouth. My husband ordered the Caldo mariscos and also was in heaven. We always love coming here and the service is super friendly and very professional."

  • "Don't go on a Friday without a reservation! Fortunately we had made one in advance. The food and service were absolutely spectacular; I truly can't say enough good things about Tropisueno, and we will definitely go back next time we are in the city. Everything we ate was off the charts, and every single person who worked there was incredibly polite, and thoughtful. I wasn't feeling 100% that night, and the staff noticed I hadn't eaten much and the manager came over to ask me if everything was okay, and told me he hoped I felt better on the way out. That is quality service that they actually noticed this and CARED. (My soup was fantastic, by the way. I wish I had it now!) Highest recommendation possible."

  • "Excellent food, though more vegetarian options would be nice. The noise level is very high -- not surprising given that it was packed."

  • "Dinner at Tropisueño is a real treat. Their menu offerings are fantastic and well executed. On our last visit, the service was amongst the best I've ever received anywhere. What a great time!"

  • "My wife and I love this place! Great food and service and right next to the Metreon. Good idea to make a reservation since they fill up fast."

  • "What a great find! The food was fantastic, the service was even better. Very glad I made a reservation though. People were waiting for about an hour to get in. It was quite busy but it didn't feel crowded. It was my wife's birthday and they brought her the MOST DELICIOUS cake. Sounds amazing and it is, the best part was still to come ... the bill. This was one of the cheapest meals we had in San Fran!! Our lunch down the street was pretty much the same price and it didn't come with the most amazing Margarita ever."

  • "We had the porkchop and the mariscos tropisueno. Both very good. House margarita was so-so. The 3 salsa sampler that comes with the chips are very good. I'd go back again. We knew to have reservations at this spot...glad we did. Was very busy, but they sat us at our reservation time and were very attentive while we waited. Enjoy"

  • "I love this place! since my friend introduced me to this restaurant two weeks ago, I've gone back three more times already, and every time it's great experience. with so many customers, I didn't expect they would remember me, but the hostess actually remembered my name and accommodated us. everyone is friendly here has such positive energy. It's so refreshing from the rest of the San Francisco restaurant scene where arrogance is norm. I can tell everything runs smoothly and efficiently at this place."

  • "Hard to find a decent restaurant that's not terribly over priced by the Metreon. Food was good. Margaritas good. Price tag moderate. Works for me."

  • "We showed up five minutes early for a 5:45 reservation and were seated immediately. Then we had to wait way too long to have our drink order taken. Once our server showed up, the food was very good (and very filling). The drinks were light and San Francisco expensive."

  • "Friday night was really busy. Waited about 10 minutes after arriving for a reservation. Had a conversation with the hostess about the menu which was very helpful. Friendly, quick service once we were seated. The salsas were really tasty. Red, yellow, green. Will definitely go back for an occasion but not my everyday kind of place."

  • "From the moment we sat down, I could tell they wanted to turn our table quickly. We barely had a chance to review the menu before our waiter asked us whether we wanted guacamole, appetizers or a drink. I loved their chips/salsa and shrimp ceviche. The main courses were tasty as well but I hated the fact that they were lukewarm. It made me felt like my dish was prepared well in advance and simply microwaved for me. This is a great restaurant if you're in a hurry to see a movie at the Metreon across the street. Unfortunately this was a date night for me and my husband (we have a 4 month old) and I was hoping to have a bit more of a relaxed dinner."

  • "I loved this hidden gem I stumbled upon online when I was looking for a quiet spot to have a small birthday dinner that was affordable, high quality and easy to get to for everyone. A lot of the places downtown in the FiDi are either exorbitantly expensive or just for drinks or are impossible to get a reservation to. This one hit the spot. Ambiance was beautiful, and the food was stellar."

  • "Found this on check please Bay Area website and am not disappointed. Great service and food. Bar scene was bustling with activity. I tried the pear margarita which was so good! There is so much that is great about this place that I recommend just going. Busy with after work business scene on the day we went. Close to BART and shopping in downtown SF."

  • "This place can work a group in pretty well despite being fairly busy. Good service for sure although we did have to wait for our drinks a few times after ordering or waiting to order more. The chips a pretty greasy. It would be much better if they baked them. The salsas are great and the overall experience is worth coming back."
