The restaurant is small, and perhaps slightly claustrophobic. The menu is not large but the food was excellent. Unfortunately, the experience was spoiled by a distracted waiter. We ordered the only Chablis on the full bottle list, and he showed us the bottle. It said Chablis, and I accepted it. After it was poured, I asked to see the bottle and the wine list, and it was not the same wine. When I inquired, the waiter said that it was the Chablis sold by the glass and he just assumed I wanted a bottle. He offered it at a reduced price, and since we had already started drinking it, I accepted, the waiter then mixed up the orders, putting the wrong dishes in front of the wrong people. He came and went, but we never felt that he was really concerned with us.

The care and warmth that this staff gives to the customer from the moment of arrival to leaving is graciousness and inviting. The food and wine pairings are created by artists that love their craft. Expensive, but hey, you're worth it aren't you?

  • No Lunch On Saturday

I made a reservation for a Saturday lunch, they only had an 11:45 but since it was before the theater I accepted it. When we arrived we were told they were not serving lunch and only breakfast was available. We settled for omlettes, we were the only people in the place and apparantly they were going to close soon, as a result the staff sat all packed up ready to leave as we ate. It was not only a disappointment in the meal but also uncomfortable as well. They NEVER should have accepted our reservation. But on the other we should have gotten up and walked out instead of trying to make the best of a not ideal situation. I will never try to make he best of a situation in a resturant again and I will remember I am the customer.

For special birthday dinner, we had the 8-course tasting menu with wine pairings. It was fantastic, and we loved how warm and witty and well-informed our waiter Alberto was. Also loved how knowledgeable about wine and food was Ivo Couto, the manager. We paced ourselves for a long slow leisurely meal and were grateful that Alberto was willing to slow down the arrival of next course. I would have been wiser to have turned down the last 2 glasses of wine and that's what I'll do next time (even though that would be a gustatory sacrifice.)

I had been looking forward to taking my wife to Triomphe since we had not been and it was on our french dining bucket list. We went with high expectations hoping to add it to our NYC Gem list. We were very disappointed. The appetizers, cocktails and service were excellent to start, but the entrees and subsequent service that was soooo disappointing. While I attribute some of this to it being a Monday night -- no excuse for a dining room such as Triomphe. My wife's Beef Wellington the was over cooked (medium well) with the encased puff pastry broken. How could that have gotten out of the kitchen? While the entree was removed from our bill, the server was apologetic, but clearly did not care. My Bison Strip was tolerable at medium, but not medium rare as I had asked and the food was not particularly hot. During our meal, the small intimate dining room was filled with the sound of staff chatting in Spanish about their personal lives-- really? Yes we understood the language. Intimate dining room; well rated; excellent menu... unacceptable experience and no Maitre'D or Chef had the consideration to address our table.

Triomphe is a lovely dining spot, with a relatively varied and interesting menu. The service is European-style (read "slow" for New Yorkers) and well-executed. However, our dinner, when it finally arrived 25 minutes after we've finished our soup and salad, was cold -- meaning that it sat somewhere after it was done, unserved. WHY????

We chose this restaurant for a birthday dinner for our son, and were pretty disappointed. In particular, the service was slipshod, which was astonishing given the price point. For example, while I told one of the servers as soon as we sat down that it was my son's birthday, they brought his dessert without putting a candle. Also, I ordered a glass of wine with my dinner, and had to ask for it twice (it came when I was just about finished with my main course). It seemed that there were many people taking care of our party of five, but no one really paying attention. Most of the food was very good, but I wouldn't come back.

We'd been away for a year or so and wondered how Driomphe had fared: no need to worry. If anything Triomphe is better than ever, with service and food more finely tuned than we'd remembered. Service is professional, friendly and unobtrusive, the dining room is still a gem of gracious, luxurious politesse and the food - stellar. Tuna, lemon-roasted poussin and vegetables, scallops, and the beef wellington were perfection. Salads are complex and rewarding and the soups rightfully demand attention, too. Desserts are better than ever. There is now a tasting menu, and perhaps next visit we'll consider the epicurean menu. But we were too delighted with the gradual improvements and reassured that some good things never change - they triumph.

Had my first lunch in NYC here. Great Food, Good Service. Luckily had the chance to talk to Chef, very friendly guy. The Waldorf, Shrimp Salad, was good and refreshing, but the Lobster Cappuccino (on the house), was even more delicious! The Salmon Fillet was perfectly cooked. Spiced Pear was a good finish for the lunch. Recommended.

Two of us had dinner there in the early evening, and we were disappointed. The lobster bisque was dark and bitter; the salad was ordinary; the yellow fin tuna was not great; and the chocolate dessert was much too rich and cloying. The lamb special, however, was excellent as was the pear dessert. Overall, an average or rather a mixed dining experience that should have been much more special. Perhaps we were there on an odd night. The young chef was delightful, and two of the dishes were superb so there is promise.

The service people in this restaurant had poor or no training. I have been eating in New York Restaurants off and on since 1943. I have never encountered worse service. In a restaurant where my entree was $44.00, I expect a little attention. We got almost none. There were few tables occupied, and yet we had to constantly search for the waiter. Getting a second drink took extra effort on our part. We could see the waiter standing and chatting for long stretches in the kitchen door.

Triomphe is a quiet little gem and a welcome relief from the din and turbulence that characterize many restaurants today. The cuisine is excellent and the service impeccable. I recommend it especially for a serious business lunch or a romantic evening where you actually want to have a converse in a normal tone of voice, all the while being well taken care in a refined environment.

The decor may be conservative, but the cuisine is splendid and the room is quiet, both finds in the theater district. We arrived not having allowed quite enough time for the tasting menu and were accommodated as well as possible by staff. As successive courses decree, portions were modest but sufficient. Everything was exceedingly tasty and pretty on the plate. There s a tariff fdor this, of course, but oftewn worth it. Conversation is at a premium.

I had looked forward to bringing my pre-theater group to this lovely restaurant for quite some time. The hostess who called to confirm my reservation was quite accommodating regarding our seating selection and I was sure we were in for a delicious treat. Unfortunately, the restaurant's inability to control the arctic wind that blew through the dining room throughout our meal ruined the experience for all of us. In addition, the lobster bisque seemed to be made of salt instead of bisque. My duck dish, once it was reheated after coming out of the kitchen cold, was delicious, and the rest of the party found the striped bass, scallops and soups to be quite tasty. All in all, not quite the Triomphe I was expecting for the price...

We don't visit NYC often, but when there we still love to dine at Triomphe at least once and this time was wonderful, as expected. The menu was available online so we knew what our options might be in advance. The offerings reflect the season and the East Coast locale with regard to seafood and fresh fruits and vegetables. My "deconstructed Bouillabaise" was comprised of a nice combination of squid, baby clams, shrimp, salmon and white fish; the broth delicately flavored with fennel but robust in the flavors of the fish and shellfish. We shared an appetizer of 6 oysters with champagne "beads" - briny but small and mild in flavor. We also shared a beautiful salad of watermelon, feta and arugula which was beautifully presented on slate.

Very disappointing. This was probably our fifth visit to Triomphe in as many years, and its previous dinners had lived up to its name. This time the service was friendly but quite disorganized; the dishes mediocre; the duck badly overcooked. For this lackluster dinner if two appetizers and entrees, with three glasses of wine between us and without dessert or coffee, the cost exceeded $200. Perhaps there's been a change in chefs. Certainly something has changed for the worse.

We had not visited Triomphe for a few years and were so glad to see the recent updates to the restaurant The interior is lovely, with subdued lighting, but the real pleasure was with the staff and the food. We were greeted with a smile by the hostess and promptly put in the capable hands of Mr. Couto. Each staff member was cordial, without being intrusive, and guided us through our selections. We were pleased to see the addition of several half bottles of wine to the list, including champagne. Our dinner selections were outstanding (salmon, chicken, and Beef Wellington), and each was served in a timely manner. All around, we would give high marks, with special kudos to Ivo C. We shall definitely plan a return trip.

Although the staff was very friendly and accommodating, I felt somewhat rushed since the meals were being served before I had finished my wine. It did not allow any time to savor the meal and chat over dinner.
