TRENCHERMEN
[def: 1."a person who enjoys food; hearty eater and drinker]
A partnership between award-winning chef Patrick Sheerin with local restaurateur Matt Eisler and designer Kevin Heisner, Trenchermen is located in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. Creatively retooling the ubiquitous chef-driven concept by serving thought-provoking food in a fun, boisterous environment, the restaurant integrates the best of both casual and fine dining experiences. Inspired by the sense of community created by early 20th century beer halls, Trenchermen adopts a Midwestern farm-focused approach to craft its progressive new American cuisine, presenting familiar flavors in an unexpected manner.

My husband and I have been here three times, and it seems the food is getting less consistent and the portions are getting smaller. Last night we paid $3 for 4 slices of bread. Don't get me wrong, the bread was great, as was most of the food. But one dish was a big disappointment, the pork, which was quite tough. I'm sad to say that Trenchermen has fallen off our favorite restaurant list.

This is one of the best restaurants in Chicago - and I enjoy every meal and every bite. We often go in and eat at the bar and the service and people are always amazing. As a result I was pretty disappointed by my experience on Sunday. I was meeting a friend for brunch and she was late. As a result I was at the table for 20 mins and did not want to start without her. That said, there were plenty of other seats so I don't feel i was keeping the server from Turning the table. The server was pretty low energy..which is fine...but she was very unresponsive. We would deliver a new drink but not clear the old empty glasses...she would drop a wine list then disappear when she could have stayed for 30 seconds while I chose between the 5 glasses ...She was just not up to Trencherman standards...and that is a shame. I am going to choose that this be a one time thing..and if it happens again I will make sure I see the manager. that said, as we left one of the staff, who was already checked out still took time to grab our coats as the hostess had stepped away for a minute..that is the service I expect at Trencherman..and hope to get again. The food..impeccable...try the biscuits and pepperoni gravy....fantastic!

Set up a reservation on OpenTable which was super simple and awesome because we didn't have to wait when got there. The hostess was very sweet and took our jackets. Can't complain about free coat check. And then to top things off we had the absolute pleasure of having Jacqueline as our server. What a delight.... She was super nice, funny, and very very knowledgeable about the menu. It was also fun playing "server's choice" when it came to our second round of cocktails. I would most definitely go back.

Our experience at Trenchermen started gret because you are hit with the beautiful decor and design of the space. But the good did not meet our expectations. The Burrata app was an odd mixture if flavors that didn't highlight the gourmet quality if the cheese. Our table gave mixed reviews of the octopus app -- I liked the smoky sauce and slightly undercooked beans while my husband thought the octopus was over cooked. We all loved the gnocchi app. Then the entrees: the quail, while large, was not impressive. The flank steak was likewise in impressive with and odd sauce a black rice patty paired with it. The scallops were very well cooked. The desserts were all very very good. But overall, we were not impressed which is a shame.

What a disappointment! We had 7:00 reservations and were constantly rushed. Our party of four ordered the prix fixe option. We enjoyed all the sides and appetizers but the entrees were a disaster. Char and scollops both over cooked . Pork loin had a terrible texture and the quail was " a mystery meat" and after all had tried a bite the remainder was left on the plate. The desserts were ok with the S'Mores being the favorite. Bill over $300 with 4 cocktails and the least expensive wine offered. None of us will return.

The service was simply impeccable. The menu is creative and the food was amazingly tasty and beautifully plated. However, we noticed that no bread was provided before our meal. Soda and coffee were not unlimited, you paid for each glass/cup served. The ambiance was great but we would not make it as a regular place to dine out. Instead, if you have a special occasion to to celebrate, Trenchermen would make your evening to remember.

Overall, the meal experience was average. We arrived on a very quiet Sunday night to an even quieter restaurant. Service was very good and the menu was creative to say the least. We had pickle tots (outstanding) and waygu ribs to start (these had a strong smell of body odor which was impossible to get past). Then, we split potato gnocchi (bland and tasteless) and brussel sprouts (best dish we had) on the side of scallops (scallops were cooked perfectly, but quinoa side was dried out and too many flavors going on in one dish). Glad we tried it but not worth a return trip.

Great venue and staff. The pickle tots appetizer was a miss for me--a weird combination of ingredients; however, the pork collar main course was very good. Bar and waitstaff were very accommodating and were helpful in choosing cocktails and wines. S'Mores dessert was meh--good chocolate--popcorn ice-cream was too far off the charts.

My experience was wonderful from start to finish. The decor is attractive and soothing, the staff was attentive without being cloying, and the food was delicious. I was greeted warmly upon arrival, and the servers were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I chose a tasting menu and special cocktail, plus wine - all excellent. The food presented many contrasts in taste and texture. Some were quite unexpected, and all were well-conceived. If I hadn't been just visiting Chicago, I'd return often.

The food was bland and they looked perturbed when we asked for salt and pepper. What made it worse was the terrible service we received from Jacquelyn. We waited 10 minutes for her to greet us after being seated. When we asked the hostess if we had a server, Jacquelyn showed up and was not happy with us for wanting service. She took our order unwillingly, not helpful when we asked questions about the menu and never returned once food was served to see how our meal was. Needless to say, we will not return. Although, other servers seemed friendly and helpful. Hopefully you will be lucky enough to get them if you choose to dine here.

My husband and I and 2 friends ate at Trencherman recently, after not having dined there since last year (before the original chef/owner left). The restaurant hasn't skipped a beat, the food and service were excellent. I had Arctic char, which was expertly prepared. My kale salad was a bit heavily dressed, but a minor issue. My husband had the scallops, which he said were also excellent. Our companions thoroughly enjoyed their meals too (one ordered ribs and tuna tartare, the other scallops). Service was attentive. An excellent dining experience.

I've been here a few times and usually have such great experiences. However, this last time was disappointing, mainly due to the poor service. After being seated, it was a good 15+ minutes just to order drinks and then another 10 -15 to order our food. When the food finally did arrive, it was very good (as usual). We would have had more drinks but the waitress didn't really come back to check on us much at all. The people sitting on each side of us had similar problems and one couple nearly walked out because they waited on their check forever - which happened to us as well. In the end, the food was very good but the service just killed it. Not sure I'll go back.

While not extra-ordinary - the service is fantastic, and the food is consistently above-average. It's nothing that wows, but at least you get fairly decent food in a really nice setting. The prix fixe brunch ($20) is great - a choice of pastry, main and side - well worth it. Had the gruyere danish - pastry was good, but it was served cold; for mains had the salad with fried chicken - also not bad; and for sides - the bacon stuffed bacon - which was a tad too meaty for my taste. Would definitely go back though - nice place to catch up with a friend or a lazy Sunday brunch spot.

We tried this place out to celebrate my partner passing his actuarial exam and we were looking for a place to have a few good drinks where it wasn't too loud. We tried the prix fixe menu and it was fabulous–definitely a great deal if you want to try a bunch of different things with a small group. Food was great, somewhat moderate portions, but certainly reasonable for the price because some of the dishes were actually quite complex. Our server was great; she just slipped in and out and took great care of us! Our glasses were never empty and the bottle of Montepulciano (okay, maybe two bottles) was absolutely awesome. We will definitely be back!

From service to food, everything hit the right notes here. We brought a wine ($25 corkage per bottle) that happened to be on the restaurant's list, and they didn't bat an eye. The server also did a great job with a slightly dry cork. And speaking of service, everything went very smoothly for the entire evening. The food runners and bussers were subtle and prompt, and the server was friendly and gave us a lot of time between courses. The food was simply excellent. We had the pickle tots to start (impossible to imagine a refined version of this, but they completely pulled it off), an excellent sort of oat risotto, scallops, and pork collar. Honestly, we would order each of these things again on another visit. Highly recommended.

We came here for my wife's birthday after reading good things about it. We were not disappointed. The preparations are really interesting and delicious. The desserts we had were really great (Smores & Apple Cake) with again some really interesting preparations. The place is a little loud, but we were still able to converse. The only slight downside was the appetizers took awhile to come, but it was smooth sailing after that. The waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful when it came to both food and wine. I would highly recommend a trip to Trencherman. We will be back.

We loved our dining experience at Trenchermen last weekend. We tried the 4-course menu for $50 (which is a really good deal for the quality of food). There were 3 of us and ordered 3 different starters/apps/entree/dessert so we can try more. Each dish was delicious, very innovative, unique combinations and great flavors. My favorites are: Fried green tomatoes, Pickled tots, Hanger steak, Trenchermen smokes and Greek yogurt panna cotta. The food was excellent (we shared the arctic char, cobia, tuna tartare and grilled octopus). The server was knowledgeable and nice, and the wine list was extensive. The busboys were extremely annoying, coming way too often to refill each sip of water, and trying to clear plates away way too quickly. I even cleared one large plate - to accommodate him - onto the small plate I was using bc we were sharing, and then he tried to take my small plate too! Definitely need better training.

We were visiting from out of town (couple's weekend). The restaurant was a nice balance of creative food options, good value (prix fixe menu was $50 per person...but you could order off the menu, too), and great drink menu. Our server was very polished, informative, yet casual. Even the people running the food to the tables eloquently explained what was being served to us. The history of the building is interesting (former bath house) with the white subway tile still see in certain places. Great ambiance. Not noisy (but admittedly, not a packed restaurant at the time we ate dinner). Not pretentious. The portions were just right (smaller when doing the fixed price menu). I would recommend this restaurant.

We met some friends here and all did the prix fixe 4-course menu - it was nice to be able to choose anything off the menu - the only thing "prix fixe" was the price - a bargain at $50. Sunday night, so quieter than a typical going out night - but the tables were still pretty busy. Food was FANTASTIC! Everyone was so happy with our choice of restaurant. Some really unique combinations of ingredients and flavors - absolutely loved it. Very original. The last time I was here, I brought my high school aged son on a mother/son "date." This past weekend we tried the Trencherman brunch after reading reviews that it was a top 10 must do. Having been to dinner several times here and enjoying both the food and atmosphere, we were not too impressed with the brunch experience. I cannot complain about the food (very foodie presentations and combinations) or the drinks, but the service was slow considering at 11AM on a Saturday the restaurant was fairly empty. Overall I left feeling like there wasn't anything that was down right bad, but nothing stood out either...just okay. However I will be back for dinner and drinks as I really love this restaurant in the evenings.

We ordered nearly the entire menu and didn't have one dish that we thought wasn't a success. The fishes we fresh and perfectly cooked, the scallops were seared and there wasn't one speck of grit in them. The pork was rich and delicious. I would highly recommend Trenchermen to anyone looking to eat in Bucktown or Chicago as a whole.
