TRENCHERMEN
[def: 1."a person who enjoys food; hearty eater and drinker]
A partnership between award-winning chef Patrick Sheerin with local restaurateur Matt Eisler and designer Kevin Heisner, Trenchermen is located in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. Creatively retooling the ubiquitous chef-driven concept by serving thought-provoking food in a fun, boisterous environment, the restaurant integrates the best of both casual and fine dining experiences. Inspired by the sense of community created by early 20th century beer halls, Trenchermen adopts a Midwestern farm-focused approach to craft its progressive new American cuisine, presenting familiar flavors in an unexpected manner.

We tried this place out to celebrate my partner passing his actuarial exam and we were looking for a place to have a few good drinks where it wasn't too loud. We tried the prix fixe menu and it was fabulous–definitely a great deal if you want to try a bunch of different things with a small group. Food was great, somewhat moderate portions, but certainly reasonable for the price because some of the dishes were actually quite complex. Our server was great; she just slipped in and out and took great care of us! Our glasses were never empty and the bottle of Montepulciano (okay, maybe two bottles) was absolutely awesome. We will definitely be back!

From service to food, everything hit the right notes here. We brought a wine ($25 corkage per bottle) that happened to be on the restaurant's list, and they didn't bat an eye. The server also did a great job with a slightly dry cork. And speaking of service, everything went very smoothly for the entire evening. The food runners and bussers were subtle and prompt, and the server was friendly and gave us a lot of time between courses. The food was simply excellent. We had the pickle tots to start (impossible to imagine a refined version of this, but they completely pulled it off), an excellent sort of oat risotto, scallops, and pork collar. Honestly, we would order each of these things again on another visit. Highly recommended.

We came here for my wife's birthday after reading good things about it. We were not disappointed. The preparations are really interesting and delicious. The desserts we had were really great (Smores & Apple Cake) with again some really interesting preparations. The place is a little loud, but we were still able to converse. The only slight downside was the appetizers took awhile to come, but it was smooth sailing after that. The waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful when it came to both food and wine. I would highly recommend a trip to Trencherman. We will be back.

We loved our dining experience at Trenchermen last weekend. We tried the 4-course menu for $50 (which is a really good deal for the quality of food). There were 3 of us and ordered 3 different starters/apps/entree/dessert so we can try more. Each dish was delicious, very innovative, unique combinations and great flavors. My favorites are: Fried green tomatoes, Pickled tots, Hanger steak, Trenchermen smokes and Greek yogurt panna cotta. My husband and I dine out a lot and I would say that our experience at Trenchermen was great! Would definitely go back!

Food, Drinks, Ambiance, and service before and after dining were all outstanding! I say after dining because I lost my receipt for the business dinner I planned and thought it would be a hassle to get a copy for my records. One phone call and email from the friendly staff and I was not worried about reporting my expense. Would go back for sure!

Trenchermen was everything we had hoped for when we got a chance to go our for my husband's birthday dinner. The decor was very of the moment without being cliche. The wine list was quite good, and rather extensive. The cocktails and beer list was also inventive. And the food, oh man the food. The prix fixe menu was an incredible deal, and the food was amazing. Perfectly balanced bites, resulting in extremely clean plates. We loved it.

The food was excellent (we shared the arctic char, cobia, tuna tartare and grilled octopus). The server was knowledgeable and nice, and the wine list was extensive. The busboys were extremely annoying, coming way too often to refill each sip of water, and trying to clear plates away way too quickly. I even cleared one large plate - to accommodate him - onto the small plate I was using bc we were sharing, and then he tried to take my small plate too! Definitely need better training.

We were visiting from out of town (couple's weekend). The restaurant was a nice balance of creative food options, good value (prix fixe menu was $50 per person...but you could order off the menu, too), and great drink menu. Our server was very polished, informative, yet casual. Even the people running the food to the tables eloquently explained what was being served to us. The history of the building is interesting (former bath house) with the white subway tile still see in certain places. Great ambiance. Not noisy (but admittedly, not a packed restaurant at the time we ate dinner). Not pretentious. The portions were just right (smaller when doing the fixed price menu). I would recommend this restaurant.

We met some friends here and all did the prix fixe 4-course menu - it was nice to be able to choose anything off the menu - the only thing "prix fixe" was the price - a bargain at $50. Sunday night, so quieter than a typical going out night - but the tables were still pretty busy. Food was FANTASTIC! Everyone was so happy with our choice of restaurant. Some really unique combinations of ingredients and flavors - absolutely loved it. Very original. The last time I was here, I brought my high school aged son on a mother/son "date." He has raved about it every since!

This past weekend we tried the Trencherman brunch after reading reviews that it was a top 10 must do. Having been to dinner several times here and enjoying both the food and atmosphere, we were not too impressed with the brunch experience. I cannot complain about the food (very foodie presentations and combinations) or the drinks, but the service was slow considering at 11AM on a Saturday the restaurant was fairly empty. Overall I left feeling like there wasn't anything that was down right bad, but nothing stood out either...just okay. However I will be back for dinner and drinks as I really love this restaurant in the evenings.

We ordered nearly the entire menu and didn't have one dish that we thought wasn't a success. The fishes we fresh and perfectly cooked, the scallops were seared and there wasn't one speck of grit in them. The pork was rich and delicious. My first time at Trenchermen certainly won't be my last! My group of 6 agreed to get the prix fixe brunch menu and it was way too much food for only $20! The breakfast pastries were delicious, nice strong coffee, and a yummy brunch salad. I tried the everything bagel, the ham and gruyere croissant and the bacon stuffed bacon that my fellow diners ordered and enjoyed those as well.

The atmosphere is perfect for a romantic date or a group get together. Lighting is just low enough and the finishes from the tables to the light fixtures are all high end. Our table of 6 opted for the pre-fixed menu, which ended up allowing the entire table to order everything on the menu. We shared every dish, from each appetizer/starter to the dessert. It is almost impossible to choose a favorite because every menu item was crafted to perfection! The pickled tots, potato gnocchi, and tuna tartar were app stand outs. As far as entrees, the arctic char, scallops, and beer braised pork were outstanding. Be sure to save room for the matcha semifreddo for dessert! Fantastic culinary experience all around!

From the moment we walked into the restaurant it just felt like we would be going to have a great night together. It was just 8pm and the bar was already buzzing, the light just right and the "view" from the top of the entrance steps caught the feel of the place beautifully. We sat in a roomy booth for 4 and sampled a few of the unique cocktails - the "Diane" being the favorite on this hot summer night. We chose the "$50/4 course" menu option and spent the next couple of hours sharing the wonderful offerings from the kitchen amongst the 4 of us. Lots of reasons to return. Thanks for a wonderful night.

LOVE this space: Given that this was once a Russian bath house in the day...the large wrap-around bar is even finished with radiators! Clever design elements but still warm and inviting. Huge bar in one room, cozy spacious booths in the other room...and a really interesting brunch menu (brunch can be so boring at most places...) Husband tried the bacon-stuffed bacon: what a concept! We really enjoyed our Sunday brunch...look forward to returning to try the equally interesting dinner menu!

This was an excellent food experience. The flavors are complex and the pairings innovative. I was with a group we shared the pork flight that included bacon wrapped bacon! The peach fritter with jasmine glaze was delicious. I also had the biscuits with pepperoni gravy which was amazing. My husband chose a simple side with an interesting twist of mustard cream cheese which was truly a genius combo of cream cheese with mustard seed. We all shared plates and I can honestly say that every bite was truly amazing.

Brunch at Trenchermen with friends was fun. The ambience makes it worth the time. Cozy and personable but not cramped. The brick walls and beautiful lighting makes a beautiful setting. The food seemed a little overpriced for what was described on the menu. Flavorful and a nice presentation, but I wouldn't pay that much on a normal basis. Our waitress was very busy and did her job as far as making sure our drinks and food arrived but no more than that. We do want to come back for the bar scene. The bar is beautifully massive and the cocktail menu looks good.

Fine dining is easy to come by in Chicago, but this place really wowed me on a recent trip. I was with 3 others and we all did the $50 4-course prix fixe which comes with 2 starters or small plates, an entree, and dessert. We all ordered different items and shared the whole night. Brilliant! Of particular note in the small plates category were the tortellini (perfectly cooked, broth was flavorful) and the fried green tomatoes with devilled egg crema. We all could have licked the plate! I ordered the arctic char with borscht aioli and it was one of the best fish dishes I've ever had. The crisp vegetables really complimented the tender fish perfectly. EVERY dish were ordered was plated beautifully, and the vibrant colors were so enjoyable.
