A word from Trenchermen
TRENCHERMEN
[def: 1."a person who enjoys food; hearty eater and drinker]
A partnership between award-winning chefs and brothers, Patrick Sheerin and Michael Sheerin with local restaurateur Matt Eisler and designer Kevin Heisner, Trenchermen is located in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. Creatively retooling the ubiquitous chef-driven concept by serving thought-provoking food in a fun, boisterous environment, the restaurant integrates the best of both casual and fine dining experiences. Inspired by the sense of community created by early 20th century beer halls, Trenchermen adopts a Midwestern farm-focused approach to craft its progressive new American cuisine, presenting familiar flavors in an unexpected manner. Located at 2039 W. North Ave, the 86-seat main dining room and 52-seat bar area are open for dinner Monday through Sunday as well as brunch on Sunday.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We saw the trenchermen featured on unique eats and wanted to try it. We found it unique indeed in a very good way. The food was very good and wonderful bar. We went for brunch and are anxious to try it for dinner."

  • "Amazing drinks - Super interesting dishes. Staff is unique and professional. Had a drink called "say it loud" with malort in it. Sweet lord, avoid that drink!"

  • "Trenchermen was fabulous with great food, great service and super fun ambience"

  • "Food was delicious, the tasting menu only 50 USD, with 2 starters, 1 entree and delicious dessert! Portions were small enough to be able to enjoy all the courses!"

  • "Trenchermen has put much thought into the small, carefully curated menu at this Wicker Park foodie find. The tortellini en brodo is rich, spicy, sweet and soul satisfying. The short rib is anything but run of the mill. And the sprouted lentils in the artic char dish deserved a starring role in a menu-missing vegetarian plate. The matcha themed dessert with its cool semifreddo and crunchly bits of bee pollen and not-too-sweet strawberry sorbet won us over, even though we normally dislike dessert. Suggestion for the bar: make better use of the wide selections of gin and your kitchen's creativity to concoct an interesting starter."

  • "The prix fixe menu left all three of us hungry. While the food is very good, there was nothing that set this restaurant above others. The scallops and walleye were executed very well, everyone enjoyed those dishes. The ribs, gnocchi, and tortellini en brodo were also excellent. Octopus was the dish that no one enjoyed, and we normally love Octopus. Great space and ambiance. The bar looked like a fantastic place to hang out. Overall a good experience."

  • "I was looking forward to Trencherman. However, from the moment I stepped in I was disappointed. The ambiance of "Spring" was much more inviting and "cool." Seems like they dumbed-down the look and feel. As to food: My Number One complaint: DON'T TELL ME that the chef requires that I order everything at once. When I spend close to $300 for two people, I don't want to feel rushed. It's about me, not the chef. And $30 for two medium sized scallops (one of which was cut in half) is a little over-priced."

  • "I set up a special brunch date for a friend and myself. I wanted to take her somewhere special and my roommates boyfriends never stops raving about this place. When I got there I was highly impressed with the staffs customer service and the ambiance was incredible. But the food was not impressive. For a $14 brunch it tasted more like a $9. Bottom line is its a hip and trendy restaurant in a hip and trendy neighborhood but its nothing special."

  • "We went to Trenchermen for the cocktails and food and both were outstanding. I had a drink called arose AllDay and it was the perfect summer cocktail. Danny was our bartender, but he and everyone behind the bar worked as a team to make sure we had a fantastic evening out. I had a great time."

  • "Great spot for everyone! Including people with cow's milk dairy restrictions. So many great flavors on all the small plates and entrees we tried. will definitely be back!"

  • "We had a great experience at Trencherman. The service was great and the atmosphere is really cool. We had the pork ribs as an appetizer and it was by far my favorite thing we had. We also had the Wagyu Beef Tartare, and I wasn't really a fan of the crunchy texture. I got the scallops and they were good, but nothing to rave about. My boyfriend on the other hand got the Sheboygan Porchetta and it was delicious, I would highly recommend it!"

  • "the service can be almost weirdly attentive but that is much better than the alternative. the bar is one of my favorite spots in the whole city and the food is amazing and consistent. great craft drinks too."

  • "We dined early on a Friday evening and were the first people in for service. Staff were very friendly and prompt. The entire meal was wonderful and even received 2 free desserts. Jackie our server couldn't have been better! Definitely a must eat when back in Chicago!!"

  • "Delicious food, right-sized portions (not too small or large), reasonable prices. Would go back again!"

  • "We had an excellent meal, table of four. Our server-- whose name we neglected to ask for-- was extremely knowledgeable and enhanced the meal. Sandy blonde hair, medium height, cardigan sweater. The spinach, and oat dishes-=perfection. wine paired perfectly."

  • "We started in the bar and were served by great staff with great drinks. We moved into the restaurant and had a beautiful meal."

  • "Our server was named Erin. She was really knowledgable about the food, but failed in the below examples: 1. Both me and my guest had to order second drinks from the expeditor because our server never came by to check on us after taking our order 2. My guest asked a question about her meal after we were finished, and our server said she would check with the chef. She never retuned with an answer. 3. After dessert and our plates were cleared, our server dropped off the check without asking if we wanted coffee or anything else. 4. There was a $18 overcharge on our check"

  • "No wait. ....great room....awesome brunch...recommend breakfast sandwich"

  • "I didn't know you could make asparagus flavorless. It was almost like iceberg lettuce. The whipped marrow on the charcuterie plate was good. That's about it. Our meal for 2 took over 2 hours. Very long waits between appetizers, entrée, and dessert. "

  • "I understand that foodies enjoy melded flavors in small bites. I favor more simple dishes. There are so many combinations of spice and ingredients that the food was dazzling, but not to my taste. We ordered nine plates; 3 of them "entrees." The $400 tab for four left me mildly annoyed since we were all not satisfied - we walked out still hungry. The service was fantastic. Overall the experience was good. Another type of eater may enjoy it more than I. "

  • "We had an excellent dinner at the Trenchermen. Got the recommendation through GQ magazine and they were right on the mark. Great selection of specialty drinks and wine. Both of our meals were excellent and the service was great. Would highly recommend."

  • "Beautiful renovation. Food was trying too hard - Pretentious. Bar had innovative concoctions. Service staff was mostly attentive, tables are very close together. "
    Dined on 5/16/2014
  • "The Trenchermen is for people who love well-prepared and interesting food, but don't need all the sophistry and pretension commonly associated with it. Their technique is flawless and suits the dishes well; the aged duck arrives at a perfect medium-rare and with crispy skin, while the octopus is cooked sous vide to lose its trademark unappealing chewiness, leaving an excellent canvas for flavor. Great attention has been paid to flavor and texture, inviting serious analysis and appreciation of each dish. Yet the meal comes across as playful and not overwrought. Service is attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable."
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "While the host would not seat us at a larger table, they sat unused during our entire dinner. The server make a big deal of paying attention to the order, but the kitchen did not. It came out wrong. While we got comped for the dinner it was disappointing lack of communication. Not worth going back to."

  • "I love trenchermen. Creative dishes and good cocktails. Perfect date spot."
    Dined on 5/8/2014
  • "I found the service to be slow and the dishes to be inventive but not at all tasty. The savory donuts were disgusting. Overall this restaurant does not deserve to be a Chicago top 30. Much better eats elsewhere."
    Dined on 5/8/2014
  • "Food was great, drinks were great, somewhat snotty waitress...just disappointed in the prices for what it is. Seemed a bit high..."
    Dined on 5/8/2014
  • "Excellent excellent find - though the brunch menu is limited it is FANTASTIC - Bacon goes good with everything so the bacon stuffed bacon was the BEST!"
    Dined on 5/4/2014
  • "From before dinner drinks to dessert, the staff of Trencherman was on top of everything. The bartender took his time to talk my wife and I through cocktails and recommendations which was appreciated. While the menu is short and the dishes are not as big as Applebees, the attention to detail put into the dishes was spot on. Flavors were married together perfectly and presented like art."

  • "From the food to the playlist Trencherman's relaxes you. The flavors were amazing, especially the kale salad and brussel sprouts. Great for "date night"."

  • "This is my third try here. The biggest problem is the food. It's really not good at all. On my last visit the pork chop could have been from my high school cafeteria. It came with no sides. So for an extra 7 I got brussel sprouts which seemed frozen. Service was awful. Room deafening. It does have a great location and a good bar burger"

  • "Trencherman's was an interesting dining experience. It was fun to try food I never heard of before and enjoy it very much. The small plates were ample and two sides (fried potatoes and Brussels sprouts were amazing. The main entrees were less if a hit but we enjoyed them (Would have liked more of the aged duck (Outstanding) and less of the Bowdan sausage. "

  • "Trenchermen was a quiet and cozy place for brunch. The food was very good, and the ambiance is well worth the trip! There are so many interesting things in each nook and cranny, and the seating was very comfortable."
    Dined on 4/27/2014
  • "Very good food. The entrees are fairly reasonably priced, but the appetizers were almost a the same prices. The ham appetizer is supposed to be "signature", but I was amazed at how little there was. The duck entre was excellent."

  • "Heard a LOT of hype about this place and was disappointed. Also didn't help that we spent almost $100 per person- and no free birthday dessert! Ha! "
    Dined on 4/26/2014
  • "I m testing a new restaurant at least once every 2 weeks and so far Trenchermen is the most outstanding for a discovery of new ingredient combinations. It is heaven each time. The style is pretty unique and it sets perfectly in the old industrial neighborhood with its decoration that might have won a price. The only question is WHY THEY HAVEN'T received a one star michelin?? They totally deserve it. But its true that their cuisine is unique, cannot be ranked. "
