Since opening in May 2006, Treadwell has become one of Canada's most critically acclaimed restaurants. Located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Treadwell's "Farm-to-Table" philosophy allows Chef-Owner Stephen Treadwell to showcase the very best of seasonal produce from Niagara and Southwestern Ontario. The wine list, created by Sommelier-Owner James Treadwell, is often regarded as Canada's finest for Ontario wines.

  • "The fish and chips and the corned beef sandwich were very greasy. We ordered wine specifically to be served with our meal. Comment from waitress was remind her, she might forget! She did, we asked another waitress who told us we had to wait for the 'wine person', since they aren't allowed to pour. That person was at the next table, chatting away to the customers, whilst we waited, our food congealing, we eventually got the wine, it was very good. The decor is attractive, but the noise level, with only about 14 customers, was very loud. We had to lean across the table to converse. The patio , which we saw open last summer is very attractive, but I doubt we will be back."

  • "We have visited this restaurant several times in the last 1 1/2 years. This dinner proved a disappointment. Specifically, all the dishes had a "prepared-beforehand" taste. The scallops themselves were freshly grilled but the sauce and the additions were heavy and not freshly made. The gnocchi were pan fried but were light and airy. The mushrooms were good but overall the dish was a disappointment. We very much like the ambiance outside on the patio; the inside is small and tight although the bar is comfortable. "

  • "We booked this restaurant as a special occasion on a recent trip to NOTL. The experience was very disappointing. The wine list was lacking. The scallop appetizer was undercooked and completely raw. The sardine appetizer was so salty we couldn't finish it. The lamb shank tasted like it had been soaked overnight in a herb infused oil and had a strange oily aftertaste. The trout plate was like goulash - a mess of everything thrown in but the kitchen sink. The couple sitting next to us didn't enjoy the food either and during their main course they called another restaurant to book a table for desert and wines. We were so disappointed because it was meant to be a special celebration dinner and we left feeling so let down. "

  • "There are three things that are outstanding at Treadwells: food, service and wines. Their menus are selective but the combinations and preparation are truly outstanding. Service is up to 5-star standard but relaxed. The wine list is second to none in NOTL, is current and strongly local. The best place is the region. "

  • "I had checked out reviews for several local restaurants to take visitors from the UK. When I saw that Treadwell's had only good reviews, I decided to book. Booking online was easy and our very last minute request to change our reservation time was met without any problems. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable and the wait staff excellent. We were all blown away by the food. There were 4 of us that night - 2 had the pork, one the gnocchi and I had the lamb shank which just fell off the bone. We will certainly be returning the next time we are in the area. Highly recommended!"

  • "Booked this restaurant weeks ago, my daughter in-law also recommended this place. I was very pleased with the service, greeted at the door with a smile, seated and the food was very good.   • "Came in for brunch with 3 others, we all decided to try their prix fix. We were one of the first ones to arrive that morning, and after ordering our much needed coffee, we sat around waiting for a long time before our server came to take our orders. Though we were the first to arrive, our server took all the other table's orders around us before finally coming over to our table. Food was beautifully presented and ingredients were fresh, but we were a bit underwhelmed by the dishes after reading all the great reviews. Brunch took us 2 hours, and we all left very full."

  • "A stylish small restaurant, with excellent food and the wine the sommelier recommended was excellent. Some of the foods were not your usual fair. The Ling cod was an exciting find, as was the varieties of mushrooms. I love mushrooms and have a fair knowledge of wild mushrooms. While not unusual, they had the choice King mushroom as well as some not so usual ones such as the Hedgehog mushroom. While not one the menu we ask if some of the mushrooms could be sautéed as an appetizer. The chef was very accommodating. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening. It was definitely worth the cost.."

  • "We had a wonderful lunch at the Treadwell, only marred by a large group (17 people) of loud and demanding patrons. When our meals came we forgot the noisy patrons. The meals were perfect, as was our server. This is a small restaurant, cozy and kind of like a chic diner. Lots of counter spots, a wine bar and a number of tables of various sizes. I didn't say it was good for groups because of the size. The staff can handle you. But if your group is loud (like for a bridal shower or birthday), and you intend to talk to each other at full volume, you will spoil the restaurant for others. All in all, we had a lovely meal and will be back."

Including tip and tax our meL for 4 was $100 per person. We had one bottle of a lower Priced wine ($56) and two shared desserts. All very tasty but SOOO Expensive."

  • "The restaurant itself is small. If you're in NOA in peak season, I'm sure you'll need a reservation well in advance but it's absolutely worth it. The food is excellent - fresh, non-pretentious, beautifully prepared, and locally sourced. The have an excellent wine and beer list focused on regional wines and craft beers. The service was impeccable. Their wine steward (I'm not sure of her name) was very knowledgeable and let us taste several samples before picking a wine. If you're a fan locally sourced foods and restaurants, try Treadwell's. We would definitely recommend and have put Treadwell's on our "return to" list."

  • "We dined at lunch on a lovely sunny Saturday. 2 of us thoroughly enjoyed our choices from the Fixed Price menu. The flavours were delicious and the amount perfect. Our girlfriend has celiac and our waitress worked beautifully with the chef to accommodate her needs. Needless to say this did not take away from Treadwell's notorious flavours nor visual pleasing presentation. They had much to offer. The new location is wonderful and we look forward to the warmer weather to return to enjoy their patio."

  • "Visually, the space is inviting, perfect for a special night. We ordered scallops, charcuterie and duck confit to start. Didn't read the menu closely enough and wound up doubling up on terrine as the confit was coarsely chopped and pressed into a mold, served cold. Mains included short ribs -- fall-off-the-bone goodness as promised, pan-seared trout -- also delicious, and handmade gnocchi. The gnocchi was disappointing. Unpleasantly oily and overdone. The crumbled blue cheese mentioned on the menu was not visible in the dish, like it had melted by the time it arrived at the table. I finished the plate only because I didn't want to ruin my guests' evening by complaining about the meal. I would try Treadwell again, saving room for dessert."

  • "During a weekend stay in NotL, my boyfriend and I decided to dine at Treadwell, and it did not disappoint! Our server was very friendly and attentive, and the sommelier helped us choose a wine from their extensive list to go with our meals (while letting us try a few different ones, just to make sure!) For our appetizers, we dined on the creamless mushroom soup, and the scallops. As we waited for our mains, they also treated us to the duck confit terrine, which was very tasty. For our mains, I had the pork tenderloin, and the boyfriend had the lamb "special". Both were prepared deliciously. We capped it off with a yummy chocolate flourless came dessert. Overall, the food, wine and service were great. We would definitely go again!"

  • "It is always challenging to find a good restuarant on Valentines Day with everyone else trying to do the same thing. I can image the confusion a restuarant goes through trying to give everyone the night they can remember. Treadwell farm to table did just that. From helping us select cocktails, complimentary sparkling wine, first course, main course, and we even ordered desert. It was truely a great event for us. We will be back."

Greeted warmly at the door...seated promptly and courteaously....server was friendly and professional and witty....food was nothing short of perfect....from apps to main to dessert....BUT...the noise level in the restaurant was almost deafening!!!! between a table of six practically yelling at each other and the generalised HUM of the place,,,,i left with my ears ringing...I would have expected a little more sedate/romantic atmosphere considering the night and the price...sound just seemed to bounce all over the room..very distracting....overall, still amazing, but next time i might just bring some earplugs"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner recently at Treadwell's. The flavour and presentation of their food is excellent. All desserts are made on site by their own pastry chef and are wonderful with a great selection. Don't miss the toffee sticky pudding with date ice cream (all ice creams are also made on site). Service was excellent and the staff are very accommodating and friendly. This restaurant is a great gastronomic experience for anyone visiting NOTL or anyone living local. Space is limited so be sure to make reservations to avoid disappointment. We will definitely return in the near future."

Great chat with James the co-owner/sommelier for wine pairings which were all from Ontario, introducing us to some unfamiliar regional wines that were very good. He was obviously passionate about the wine in the region. We would highly recommend this restaurant for dining if you are in NOTL. It is a relatively small space with limited table seating and additionally some chef/bar seating that we were not aware of, so if you like to watch your dinner being prepared you could indicate that when you reserve."

  • "We picked Treadwell's for Valentine's this year and were definitely not disappointed. Food is outstanding. My husband wanted some information about the wine he had chosen and the sommelier was very well informed. The staff is very attentive and friendly. The chef was very accommodating as I asked him to do something that would have raised eyebrows in other likewise restaurants (i.e. butterfly an 8oz. steak). We have dined here on other occasions and have never been disappointed. I really love the open kitchen in this location and the chef, sous chef, etc. are all very friendly. Their patio in the summer is delightful. One of our favourite, if not our new favourite restaurant."

  • "Chefs will tell you that the true test for a kitchen are the sauces and the soups. I've visited Treadwell once before for lunch and was blown away by the squash soup. Last Friday the cream less mushroom soup infused with truffle oil was so good we came back for dinner Saturday and ordered it again! The short ribs were braised for 12hours and we're so tender I only a spoon was required to eat it! Best we've ever had."

  • "We recently had our 4th meal at Treadwell. Our 3rd was on a Saturday and was so exceptional we rushed back when the restaurant opened on Sunday and found a brunch menu awaiting! The eggs benedict was amazing with duck confit as the base rather than ham lobster or crab. The attention to the entire dish from the amazing muffin through the perfectly poached eggs to the delicate hollandaise on top was exceptional. If I were being shot at dawn, this would be my meal of choice. Pairing it with the Stratus merlot was spot on. The roast special was a Cumbrae farms flank steak with mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts cooked in clarified butter. We enjoyed a taste of the spectacular roast as we were seated at the bar overlooking all of the cooking!"
