A word from Tre Soldi
From the owners of Coco Pazzo and Coco Pazzo Cafe, Tre Soldi invites you to delight in the flavors of Rome. Tre Soldi is a Roman-style trattoria located on bustling Ohio Street, just off the Magnificent Mile and walking distance to Lurie Children's, Northwestern Hospital and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Tre Soldi (meaning three coins in Italian) garners inspiration from the Trevi Fountain in Rome, made famous in the 1954 movie Three Coins in the Fountain. Murals of the iconic fountain and the rooftops of Rome bring a warm ambiance to the casual, contemporary atmosphere. The menu features classic house-made pastas, pizza as well as daily fish and meat specials. An emphasis is given to local farmers' offerings. The full bar features several Italian craft beers, more that 20 wines by the glass or quartino, and a 100 bottle wine list. Outdoor seating opens in late July.

Diner Reviews
  • "Enjoy excellent salets and pasta dishes with attentive service and a good wine selection. "

  • "Waiter turned us on to the Halibut special and all four of us got it and loved it Pretty loud and probably best for pizza which dominates the menu"

  • "Great food and EXCELLENT service...definite must for another visit."

  • "We booked a table here using open table because it was close to our hotel. We were in town visiting family and had a large party. Table was ready when we arrived and service was very attentive. Overall food was excellent. The cheese pizza my little one had was not the greatest, but my margherita pizza was pretty good. Rest of the food and appetizers were excellent. Overall we had a great experience."

  • "My friends and I were celebrating my birthday. We choose Tre Soldi because it is in my neighborhood... We shared an octopus appetizer, a pizza, and a pasta dish. Everything was delicious, and the service was great. The wine is very pricey!"

  • "One of the best meals I ever had. I had the ricotta gnocchi and I sampled the branzino my guest had. Both were equally perfect. Attentive waitstaff. I would definitely go back and recommend it."

  • "We have visited Tre Soldi five times now. We consistently have a delicious meal as we move through the menu trying new items. Service is good and the environment is energetic but not so loud that you cannot talk with others at your table. We will be back."
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "If the noise level could be lowered several octaves, this would be a wonderful dinner choice. But the wonderful fool and service is marred by a din so loud you can't hear yourself think, never mind have a conversation."

  • "The past few times we have been out to eat we could hardly talk across the table to each other. What a pleasant surprise to be able to talk without almost yelling. The food was also outstanding. We started with the calamari. Very tender and good. We both had one of the specials. My wife had the risotto with smoked prosciutto and mushrooms. I had the pappardelle with rabbit ragu. Both were wonderful dishes. Service was very attentive. We will be back. A great evening."

  • "Food was excellent! Wait staff attentive but not intrudying. Owner/ GM was a gem. Made sure taxi was waiting and ready for us. Noise level was pretty high primarily due to 2 large boisterous groups. When they departed noise level was fine. Would love to come back next time we are in the city."

  • "This was our first visit dining here. The food and staff made it a pleasant one. The roasted beets and carpaccio were excellent to start the meal. The pizzas (Norma & Matriciana) had a nice crispy crust and a flavorful blend of ingredients. The staff was very attentive. Great service! We look forward to a return visit to try their pasta meals."

  • "I had looked up Tre Soldi on the computer. There was a group of very appealing photos showing different foods that Tre Soldi offers. Two of the dishes looked particularly appealing. When we got to the restaurant, we didn't see one of the items. I asked the waiter, whose English leaves a lot to be desired. We couldn't communicate too well. He sent the manager over. The manager didn't know what photos I was talking about and didn't know the dish I was describing. He went away and came back later and said that he looked up the restaurant's site and found the dish I was looking for. He said that this was not the season for that dish. No one speaks Italian in an Italian restaurant. Are there NO ITALIAN waiters in Chicago??"

  • "We had a great evening and enjoyed a lively conversation with a guest at a table next to us, the food was good and so was the service. I'd go back.."

  • "Converged to an average experience, nothing great, nothing terrible: - Space: Really tight seating, few tables right by door that opens up onto street (imagine a retail storefront); watch out on a cold/windy day - Service: Twice had wrong items sent (from another table). But they remediated quickly. We told them we were in a hurry, and they obliged with quick service - Food: Had the ricotta-honey Crostini, the one at Davanti Enoteca was better by FACTORS. Lamb meatballs were neither delicious by themselves, nor did they come with good flavor pairings in drizzles/dipping sauce. Pastas were good, light, cooked right. Sausage & egg pizza had a nice light crust, tasty/light spicy sauce At $54/pp, I hoped for a slightly better dining experience"

  • "This is a gem.of a place with excellent food and really moderate prices. We had the Kale salad, rigatoni, and mushroom/truffle oil.pizza. All were outstanding! We will return as Tri Soldi is now on our A List#"

  • "Could not even hear my boyfriend sitting right next to me. The ambience was extremely loud and crowded. They also kept one of the door open so a huge draft kept coming it and was really chilly."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "The service was excellent. The restaurant was crowded and extremely loud due to a party that was happening. Our server had to practically yell. We had their pizza, which was good, pasta and veal which were both far too salty. Without us asking, the manager gave us a free dessert because of the noise, chocolate gelato, which was also good. All in all, great service, meh food, bad ambiance-although that's probably just because of the party."

  • "Stopped in after seeing Shakespeare on navy pier. Had a group of 10 which was graciously accommodated. We had salads, pizza, specials and desserts and all were really good."

  • "Marco and his staff are exceptionally friendly and courteous ,the food is well presented and fairly priced. The wine list is not the most extensive , but more than sufficient for most customer's needs. I like their offerings by the glass/quartino/bottle. I hope to continue enjoying Tre Soldi in the upcoming (eventually) summer months."

  • "A sister restaurant to Coco Pazzo Cafe with a similar menu and reasonably priced Italian wine list."

  • "Tre Soldi is a decent causal dining establishment but there is nothing exceptional about this restaurant. The restaurant offers decent food at a reasonable price."

  • "My husband and I came here on Valentine's 2014 and this was our first time at this restaurant. Overall, it was a great experience... it was a bit pricy for what you get (the appetizers and dessert portions are small-- I will not fib), but the taste compensates for what you're paying. If you're looking for a cheap find, I would save this place for a pseudo-special occasion instead :)"

  • "We really enjoyed the N'djua pizza and ricotta kale mezzelunes were amazing. Don't miss out on the seasonal fruit crostata. It was hard to narrow down our choices because everything looked so good."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Pizza was excellent, a bit heavy on the cheese. Chicken was well prepared. Octopus appetizer was huge and perfectly cooked. A few very good wines by the glass at reasonable prices, but the wine list overall is uninspired. Service as attentive, very prompt, and friendly. A very good casual place."

  • "Third time at Tre Soldi - They have never disappointed! Once for sidewalk dining, once with a group, and once just the two of us for Valentine's Day. Consistently good food and excellent knowledgeable service. And the manager, Marco, always takes good care of us."

  • "My sister and I tried this for the first time Friday night! It was incredible! The food reminded me of my time in Rome, and it felt like I was back there again. The service was wonderful, and our server was very knowledgable, and prompt. He was attentive to our needs, and explained things to us with patience. I ighh recommend this place to everyone. We can't wait to come back! We've already told our close friends and family that this is a must! Thank you a wonderful evening!"

  • "Called in early to notify them of a special occasion, which they said they would add a note to the reservation about. No mention/recognition of the occasion at any point through dinner- was hoping for a surprise something."

  • "I have been to Tre Soldi two times. Both times I met with other authors and it was a wonderful place to enjoy food and catching up on what we've been publishing lately. Great appetizers, and desserts. One of the specials was trout and that is what I had. It was delicious. The chocolate hazelnut tart and the bread pudding was outstanding. We shared. Everything was reasonably priced and they didn't mind splitting the ticket. I don't drink, but a couple of the other authors enjoyed the wine selection. I would highly recommend Tre Soldi as a great Chicago Italian restaurant."

  • "The only complaint I had was that it took forever to get my car from the valet."

  • "Food is overpriced and bland. Told me the soup was broth based but it definitely was made with cream. Service was good though--very attentive."

  • "Had an amazing dinner last night at Tre Soldi! From the moment we entered and were greeted and seated. The service was outstanding and our meal was perfection! The appetizers and dinner selections were delicious Italian not to mention the cocktails were done just right! Thankyou for a wonderful dining experience in a great location of Chicago!! Perfection and reasonably priced."

  • "We had a party of 16 and they were very accommodating. Our group of 16 also included 9 kids and the staff was wonderful with them. The menu was delicious too from the eggplant appetizer, to the pasta, risotto special, to the wine selection. Would definitely go back on our next trip to Chicago."

  • "Tried this place based on location, so more on a whim. Had seen good reviews, but had never heard of it before. A really good Italian pizza & pasta restaurant with a few unusual ("foodie") and delicious menu items! And the service was top-notch!"

  • "While the Marguerite Pizza was good (it was tasty but a little over cooked), the entrees were so so. Mine was a pasta with a non descript red sauce, not much taste, with clams, calamari. My biggest complaint of the night was the noise level. We were seated next to a party, yes a big party in the bar area. I could not even hear my dining companion across the booth from me. I will try this place again as the prices were reasonable and I liked the pizza, but I will make sure to try to pick my table. The service by the way was excellent! No complaints there, very attentive"

  • "For Italian it's ok but nothing new so I won't be returning,"
    Dined on 1/15/2014
  • "We have eaten here several times before but the other night they bungled the pasta order. We asked for it on spaghetti, and they brought it on something else, so it wasn't as good as it has been in the past. The cacio e pepe was also not as well made."
    Dined on 1/11/2014
  • "Very nice decor and atmosphere. Excellent service from everyone...but the food was not very good. Pastas were really mediocre in flavor and one was seriously oversalted; portions on small size. The kitchen needs to pick up its game or it will be curtains for this place eventually. Drink and wine menu was nice with prices (somewhat high) to match the area."

  • "Place has potential, but execution needs sharpening. 1.) They messed up our reservation. 2.) They advertise as "Roman cuisine," but with few exceptions (the absolutely terrific octopus appetizer being one of them), the food was typical of most Italian spots. 3.) Stop trying to convince diners that asparagus is seasonal to CHI in January..it isn't! Food was good--octopus app already mentioned. Pizza was flavorful, but crust was underdone and not crisp. Kale was typically prepared. Wine list was good; w/good selection by the glass. Service was fine--typical of what you'd find in any place like this. The ambiance is very good, considering what they had to work with space-wise. It's a neighborhood spot & hopefully they'll work out the kinks."

  • "We love Italian restaurants and have been looking forward to our recent trip to Chicago to try this one. It was perfect, just what we love. Very comfortable ambiance, great food, friendly service. We took a table by the windows and split a pizza for an appetizer. The entrées were perfect - not too large, not too small, delicious. We loved it so much we came back week later, much later in the evening. The Maitre D recognized us and gave us a tour of the kitchen - great fun."

  • "When we first arrived we were surprised that the restaurant was a little smaller than expected, certainly not a place where you would bring a group of more than 10. The staff was very attentive, sometimes a little more than what I would have preferred but that was understandable since the were not many other guests on the Wednesday evening that we dined at Tre Soldi. We were seated near the windows, which gave us a view notable not because of the scenery, but because of the amount of people watching that could be done. The food arrived reasonably quick and though the presentation wasn't as glamorous as other restaurants, it definitely made up for it with it's flavor. Both of our meals and the appetizer were great. We will definitely return."
