From the owners of Coco Pazzo and Coco Pazzo Cafe, Tre Soldi invites you to delight in the flavors of Rome. Tre Soldi is a Roman-style trattoria located on bustling Ohio Street, just off the Magnificent Mile and walking distance to Lurie Children's, Northwestern Hospital and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Tre Soldi (meaning three coins in Italian) garners inspiration from the Trevi Fountain in Rome, made famous in the 1954 movie Three Coins in the Fountain. Murals of the iconic fountain and the rooftops of Rome bring a warm ambiance to the casual, contemporary atmosphere. The menu features classic house-made pastas, pizza as well as daily fish and meat specials. An emphasis is given to local farmers' offerings. The full bar features several Italian craft beers, more that 20 wines by the glass or quartino, and a 100 bottle wine list. Outdoor seating opens in late July.

  • "We are big fans of the pizza at La Madia, but not their prices. Tre Soldi definitely holds its own (and at better prices) than their more popular competitor. Furthermore, Tre Soldi has a good selection of Italian standards such as gnocchi, lasagna, and caprese salad. I love their Terra Cotta dessert and have enjoyed it twice. I've also gotten two of their Italian Manhattans which is their own secret recipe but absolutely delicious. It's very easy to watch the bill sky rocket if you're not careful. If you're on a budget then stick to the Italian dishes and limit your drinks. Once I spent $90 by myself (appetizer, special entree, dessert, and cocktail) and we've also spent $85 for two people."

  • "Have never been disappointed by the friendly service and excellent food. This is the type of place that's great to have in the neighborhood. Best bets are often the daily specials -- especially the salmon or other fish dishes which are creative and perfectly prepared. The salads are another high point (sounds boring, but they are really inventive and more sophisticated than you'd except for a moderately priced place.) The fava bean salad is our current favorite. Nice selection of Italian and other beers and good choice of moderately priced wines -- a full bar also. Calamari is a step above the norm -- crispy light breading kicked up with fried parsley and lemon slices. The daily frittata at lunch is a good choice. I'd highly recommend!"

  • "Tre Soldi was a fabulous find while I was visiting someone at Northwestern Hospital. It was within easy walking distance and (what's better) on Open Table and Airline Rewards! It was easy to make the decision to go to Tre Soldi after that. I was delighted to find that the ambiance at Tre Soldi was modern, comfortable, and very friendly. It seemed as if the owner, servers, and bar tender all took turns chatting with me. They made solid recommendations for food (I got the kale salad, salmon special and the panna cotta). I loved the panna cotta and will definitely get it again. I also really enjoyed my Italian Manhattan. I got spaghetti for my hospital friend and she said that it was the best and that we MUST return to this little gem."

  • "Pastas and pizzas are remarkably good. The Romano pizza had a crisp crust and a pleasantly chewy texture, with just the right balance of cheese, a fresh-tasting tomato sauce, and anchovies. The cacio e pepe pasta was served perfectly al dente, with a well-prepared light sauce. We loved the bucatini with mussels and marinara sauce. Exceedingly friendly, prompt, helpful and attentive service. The all-Italian wine list has a few decent choices at reasonable prices; better to bring your own bottle and pay the $25 corkage fee."

  • "The waiter was extremely knowledgable about the wines to an impressive degree. After we ordered a bottle he disappeared for a good 20 minutes and we never saw him. When we came by the table we flagged him down to order appetizers, we ordered one and he ran off before we could get another in or the other 2 people could order drinks. It was a constant game of flagging him down to get even the basic orders in. The food on the other hand was absolutely great. We did not have a bad dish the whole night. The grilled octopus was great, as was the carpaccio. The portions were a decent size, though I would imagine the "appetizer" portion of any of the dinners would be way too small. Overall a good night but horrible service so I won't be going back."

  • "The food was terrific - interesting, healthy options as well as heavier fare. But it was a busy evening, and as the place filled up, conversation became difficult. More surprisingly, we had a hard time getting the attention of anyone to get our check at the end of the meal! Our server disappeared for 20 minutes or so, and the bussers we asked never tracked him down. Finally, the maitre d' was circulating by and we nabbed him, and that did the trick. At least we had an early reservation - the timing of food service was not affected."

  • "I went here on a 1st date recently. Booked a table with OpenTable the day before. They called to verify the morning of and when I arrived I had no delays being seated. Service was slightly slow to start but crisp and efficient once we got going. The food was outstanding. I had a pasta carbonara dish - my date had a sea bass special. Only odd thing with the serving is the waiter said the sea bass "came with a salad" but neglected to mention that the salad came ON the fish. So when my salad arrived and no salad for my date there was uncomfortable confusion while we sorted it out. Aside from that it was great. The restaurant was LOUD which takes it out of the "intimate" category. Interior was nice just noisy. All in all a good restaurant."

  • "The pasta was perfect: al dente and lightly sauced. Portions were generous - we split an appetizer size pasta, and it was plenty for two people. We also shared a Romano pizza, which had a nice crispy but chewy crust and just the right amount of cheese and anchovies. Quite authentic. Service was prompt, friendly, helpful and attentive. The only disappointment was the all-Italian wine list, which offered several decent modestly priced wines of modest quality. The food deserves better wines. It would be nice to see them add a few more upscale wines, including some American choices."

  • "This was our first visit to Tre Soldi. We had located the restaurant on line and based on prior reviews on Open Table, chose it as a good location to meet friends for lunch. Our service was excellent and our meal choices were very good. Although the restaurant was only half full for lunch during the week, we did find the noise level a bit high. Would imagine that a full crowd, especially in the evening would make conversation a bit more difficult. The Gnocchi melted in your mouth and the Lamb meatballs were very tender and juicy. Would order both again. One of us ordered the pizza; it was delicious and the crust wasn't too thin or dry. Would visit again."

  • "Tre Soldi is the perfect dining experience for anyone looking for friendly, excellent service and food--off the Mag Mile--in an atmosphere that manages to deliver without being trendy or pretentious. The maître d' knows how to make patrons feel special. I've only been there a few times, but each time I walk in, he makes me feel like I'm one if his best customers. The waitstaff is attentive, efficient, and usually schooled in enough Italian to make a paesano like me feel right at home. And the food is spot on. They offer half portions of their great pastas as a primo, and I had their grilled pesce mista (special)--fantastico. Great blood orange sorbetto, btw."

  • "If you want a friendly local place for a salad and a plate of pasta, Tre Soldi is the place. Unlike many other "Italian" restaurants in the neighborhood, this place has more of a friendly "Mexican" feel. Perhaps from the friendly and efficient waiters and helpers. But it works. The salad was fresh and well prepared, and the Ink pasta with seafood was good. Also, just the right portion size., i.e., not too big or too small. Others had the pasta with a hearty ragu sauce, however this presentation could have been a bit more enticing. Dessert was excellent."

  • "I went to Tre Soldi for my graduation party with my extendend family. I ordered the n'dujo pizza (spicy sausage) and a bruna italian beer. It was really good. The desserts were actually better than the the main entrees. I had a bread pudding which was really good. Definitely recommend it."

  • "Tre Soldi is a keeper! I have been several times for lunch and love the grilled octopus. My teenage boys adore the crispy thin Roman Pizza. I went for dinner the other night with a girlfriend and it did not disappoint. The Beet salad was delicious and the grilled salmon was perfectly prepared--crispy on the outside and moist and flavorful on the inside. Tre Soldi is great for a work power lunch during the week, a night out with girlfriends, or a great family dinner. The service is helpful and attentive. It's my come back place!"

  • "Bad 80's music on radio. Generic atmosphere. Courses came out in the wrong order. Service inconsistent. Pizza had to be sent back because over-cooked past being edible. Strangely small cocktails. Pasta was fine. Salads were both good. Not recommended. Not sure why reviews are generally positive, perhaps visitors who are less familiar with options in Chicago? Not what we expected from Coco Pazzo owners, since we like their other two restaurants."
