A word from Tre Amici
More than 20 years ago, three Italian boys from the Jersey Shore met on the baseball diamond, intent on dominating their local little league division. Now, they are returning to their roots, intent on dominating the New Jersey restaurant scene. Celebrated chef Matthew Zappoli, brother Paul Zappoli, and lifelong friend Michael Cacciuttolo have opened Tre Amici, or "Three Friends," on Ocean Avenue in Long Branch.

The three graduates of Middletown High School North, after making their careers elsewhere, have come home to Monmouth County. Executive Chef Matthew Zappoli, a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, hails from the kitchens of some of America's most celebrated restaurateurs – including Charlie Palmer and Sami Ledeki. Zappoli's innovative menus have pleased the palates of audiences in Manhattan, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Sonoma wine country.

Diner Reviews
  • "We always enjoy coming here. The food is always great and the service is top notch. Loved the soft shell crab special. Another return is in the near future."

  • "My wife and I have been regulars at the prior location. We were excited that they acquired a liquor license with a bar and went to the new location for the first time. The service and food were fantastic as always. We were surprised that the dining area was so much smaller. In fact, our table was so close to the bar, the parties at the bar apologized for any inconveniences caused. Next time, we would eat at the bar. All in all, we were surprised how much smaller the restaurant was just for a bar and liquor license."

  • "We frequented the restaurant at the old location many times & enjoyed the ambience and food very much. We also enjoyed the fact that you were a BYOB. We have been to the restaurant twice since the move, and can honestly say that we will not be returning. Noise level is extremely high and the addition of the bar has made the cost as high as many other competitive restaurants. In addition all four of our dishes were very salty and in general disappointing. After recently reading reviews of other patrons on-line, many people share our opinion."

  • "Second time at Tre Amici but first time at their new location. Nice restaurant, knowledgeable staff, and great meal. Appetizers were great, squid was so tender and yummy. Veal was prepared perfectly. Pasta dish was great with homemade pasta and shellfish. No room for dessert. Wine was good but wine list could be improved. Preferred BYOB over their wine list. Overall, yummy!"

  • "We have eaten at Tre Amici many times and each meal has been good to great. The stuffed pork chop is one of my favorites and is always made to perfection and it is enough for 2 meals and a great value . However My opinion is that the original location was much nicer. The setting was nicer, suited for a nice dinner date with table cloths and live music a few nights. The new location still has great food and service, but the place is cramped and the servers can't get to some of the tables without bumping into you and the noise level on the weekends is great for a sports bar but not for the restaurant we had come to know and frequent. I will definitely still go for the food but will miss the original location."

  • "Food quality and service were very good. Restaurant is relatively small. Small tables - the main course serving dish (which was large) took up practically the entire side of the table. Tables are too close together. Even a small person can barely squeeze in to the rear of the tables against the wall. Noise level is very high. Conversation is difficult due to noise level."

  • "For starters I had the grilled octopus and my wife chose the special summer salad that featured watermelon topped with a balsamic caviar and pickled watermelon pieces surrounded by an olive powder. Evidently there are some molecular gastronomy techniques employed in the kitchen! For the main course I had the rabbit agnolotti and my wife had the Long Island duck two ways. The fresh home made agnolotti was filled with a combination of smoked rabbit and marscapone with truffle oil and served over a Madeira jus. The duck included a roasted breast, a confit leg and a black fig compote and was served with basmati rice. All of the dishes were delicious and we look forward to returning to Tre Amici to further explore the menu."

  • "The food was between very good and superb. We shared the clams oreganato and they were very good - had a little tang to it. We both had Manhattan's to drink and they were great. What was outstanding was the Veal Saltimbocca - probably the best veal dish I have ever had. We were too full for dessert. The service has very friendly and efficient. The reason for not getting five stars was the noise level. Initially, my wife was ready to leave, or at least not come back to the restaurant. It was that bad. It got a little better, and based on the quality of the food, we will go back, but probably not on a Saturday night. If they get the noise level down, it would be one of the best restaurants in the area."

  • "Restaurant is quanitly small, could have used a little more elbow room. I would recommend and I would go back. I believe everything was made fresh. Noise level increased with the hour and the crowd. Small bar."

  • "We ate at Tre Amici on July 3rd. The food and service was outstanding. The owner stopped by to chat with us to ensure everything was OK. It was and then some."

  • "The food is very good but the noise level and the closeness to the next table spoil the dining experience. The service is very good and the manager even is friendly but the noise makes it difficult to enjoy a conversation with dining companions. The old restaurant was much more pleasing to dining. Hope they can fix the noise level."

  • "No surprises here everything on the menu was very good"

  • "As a vegetarian (no fish), there weren't many options, however, the Fettucini Tartufo was flavorful. My guest had the Black Ink Pasta and, although he enjoyed it, he did say he has had better elsewhere."

  • "First of all, I would not go back. The noise level was unbearable we had difficulty hearing our own conversation & the place was not full at the time we were there Though the food was tasty, the portions were very small for the price we paid. Sorry, but that was our 1st and last experience at the new restaurant We have been at the old facility several time and enjoyed it very much Madonna"

  • "We were spoiled by the Ocean Ave restaurant. Sauces were not as good, chicken was salty, and my Duck was really tough. Never had a bad meal before......"

  • "We have eaten MANY times at Tre Amici and have had wonderful meals. The restaurant recently relocated and now has a liquor license (which I was not aware of). When I made reservations (and received a phone confirmation) I was not told that we could not bring our own wine. This was a disappointment because I had brought a very special bottle I wanted to share. Generally, when this kind of transition occurs, restaurants allow their clientele to bring wine for the first few months, then phase in a corkage fee or opt to no longer allow wine to be brought to their establishment--and that is certainly their prerogative. We will still dine there because the food is consistently good…but probably not quite as often as we previously did."

  • "First visit to the new location and overall was quite disappointed. The food was exceptional as usual, but the restaurant itself was noisy and cramped. Would probably return for the food, but a restaurant as popular as this one should have relocated to a larger location."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The new location has forced too many tables into a small space making private conversations impossible and causing wait staff to constantly be pushing from all sides. Very uncomfortable. Also parking across street did not seem at all safe."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "Liked it better as a BYOB. A bit pricy but very good food. Very friendly employees."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "I understood the reason for the price of the entrees at the old location because there was no liquor to make the profit from but now I don't think I'll be going back unless they reduce prices or have specials."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "We had heard such great reviews from friends that visited the old place. When a groupon came available I jumped at it. Didn't know they were in the middle of moving. There wasn't much ambience. I thought the prices were very high for the location. If this place was on the water with a view, or offered outside seating with nice setting, I think they could justify their prices. The food was good, my son raved about the duck. Not impressed with the bar...too big for the place. BYO, would have fit better."
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "The new location for Tre Amici is much smaller that their original spot around the corner. Every table was filled and the noise level was "energetic" to say the least. The service was spot on with cocktails, appetizers and the entrees flowing perfectly. Oh, yes, the food was awesome too. It was a nice touch when chef/owner Matthew came out to say hello to the diners. Will definitely be back."

  • "Went for dinner with my husband after a beautiful day at the beach.perfect! The new space is modern and seats less people than the old space. We have always been fans of the food but it was even better than in the past. We spoke with the chef, who made the rounds in the dining room, he is able to devote more attention to each plate and will be able to experiment more with the menu. We were thrilled with the items we ordered: pasta tartuffo(one of our facorites here)which we split as an app, scallops with a shrimp risotto, veal saltimbacco my husband used bread to soak up the sauce remaining on the plate! we were able to enjoy two glasses of reasonably priced but good wine. Yes they nowhave a liquor license. This is now our favorite place !!"

  • "The space is much nicer then the old spot. noise level too high."

  • "Hopefully the owner will do something to sound proof the restaurant. Suggestions, padding the table tops, table cloths, something on one or all walls. We have dined there twice, and on. on both occasions, the notice level is intolerable. Also, the restaurant should invest in decent cutlery. "

  • "My husband and I have always dined at this resturant but it's new location is small and noisy the wait staff is inexperienced could not calculated our change correctly it took our waitress three times before she got it right.its no longer a Byob resturant and the prices have increased to a ridiculous level given the location and staff.sad to say but we won't return"

  • "glasses were dirty....and the pasta with crab cakes had a strong lemon taste. That just didn't work with cream sauce. NOt good. Other meals were good."

  • "We enjoyed wine at the bar during Happy Hour, and then went to our reserved table for dinner. It was our first time at Tre Amici and we were pleasantly surprised. It was such a fun, girl's night out; the customers and the staff were very friendly. Our entrees were delicious, we absolutely enjoyed the scallops and the fettucini tartufo. We are planning our next evening there!"

  • "Prices are very reasonable for exquisite preparation and well-sized portions. We passed this time on appetizers and dessert, yet were well-satisfied. Menu is not overly extensive, yet there is a good balance of choices, nearly all gems in two visits. In contrast to Long Branch's many great and folksy family-style eateries, Tres Amici is truly a palate-engaging dining experience. We were proud bring our discerning out-of-town friends for a relaxed, enjoyable time. Relocated to their new location a few blocks west on Brighton Ave., they are no longer BYOB."

  • "We were not pleased by the ambience nor the food. The Pappardelle Bolognese was in a vodka type, overly basil, almost meatless unremarkable sauce. Small portions, small salad with nothing but mixed greens and the crème brule had a sour note. My dinner companion had seared scallops, four medium size and a bit on risotto."

  • "I was disappointed in this new location. We were sitting so close to the next table that we could hear every word of their conversation. The noise level was very loud. Our table was near the door with a low wall behind one of our seats which caused the servers to have to squeeze behind the chair to get to the next table. The $9.00 per glass of wine charge really added to our check. The food was good but didn't seem quite as good as in the previous location. We will not be in a hurry to go back."
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "We were looking forward to a relaxing dinner with guests and our favorite bottle of wine. No one told us the restaurant was no longer a byob! And, when we got there our table was not ready. We stood and waited for 15 minutes until they decided to create a table for us right in front of the kitchen. It was noisy and crowded. All in all, a disappointing evening."
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "The new location is very attractive but much smaller than the place around the corner. The food is as good as ever. The noise and the crowds may mean we won't taste it again until after Labor Day!"

  • "Had dinner at Tre Amici last night. It was the first time we have been to the new location. It is a bit smaller but the decor is very nice. Our table was near the rear which could have used just a wee bit more light. Though I do miss the BYOB policy, It was Wine O Wednesday so we got a lovely bottle of Chianti for half price; affordable and delicious. The octopus appetizer was fabulous; melt in your mouth tender! My carbonara was delicious. Chef Zappoli makes his own pancetta and it was wonderfully smoky in the dish. The use of snap peas adds a lovely sweetness. My husband got the bolognese and was also pleased. We shared the creme brulee for desert and I'm glad we did! Tre Amici remains one of my favorite Italian restaurants. I'll be back!"

  • "Our waitress was fantastic, she knew what each of us ordered and delivered it with a smile. Helpful with menu choices. I LOVE her and her waitressing skills. Food was DELICIOUS - fresh, hot, cooked just for us, ample portions. Ambiance = LOUD. Please notify me when you get better acoustics. I will not return for this reason, what a shame to find such a great place on a cool little street and the noise in the room made it difficult to communicate. Is outside dining a choice? I would eat here every time I'm in town if so."

  • "Having been to the old loaction several times, this new location was disappointing. The noise level was terrible. We actually found ourselves shouting many times. The dining room is much smaller. There is a bar now, so the attraction of BYOB no longer exists. The food was very good, as usual, but due to the need to add a bar bill, the cost of dining at Tre Amici became much higher. We will have to think about going back as the cost now will have to be a factor whereas in the prior location the BYOB advantage made dining there more affordable. In addition, the quality of the dining experience due to the noise level is also a negative."

  • "We were two couples for a 7:30 PM reservation on a Saturday night. Seated after a few minute wait. Very nice bar in the new site, but the restaurant itself is much smaller that the previous venue. The only negative was the noise level which was very loud which impeded conversation at the table. That said, the food and service was, as usual, excellent. One of the owners was working the room and stopped at our table to see how everything was. He noted the noise level and said that they were working on the issue. "

  • "We enjoyed a nice dinner at Tre Amici's new location in Long Branch. It is much smaller than the former location but it now has a bar and liquor license. The bar was very nice as was the restaurant decor. We ate early on a Sunday evening and there were very few people in the restaurant. I do not know if it was just too early or if people have not found the new location yet. The outside signage was very poor and we passed the restaurant twice before we realized where it was. The menu is somewhat limited and I had a difficult time choosing what I wanted to eat. The food was good but I thought the pace of the meal was a little too fast. With appetizers..drinks..and the meal we were out of the restaurant in about an hour. Overall pretty good! "

  • "Tre Amici came highly recommended. Location hard to find on Brighton since they moved from location I thought they were at. No marquee on building so additionally hard to find. Parking limited and street busy with what I assumed to be nearby college students bar. The restaurant atmosphere is terrific if not a little dark (harder to read menu this dark). Restaurant and Bar is lively. Food selection although limited is quite creative and food did not disappoint. I'm sure anything you order here will be quite to your liking as the chef is talented. Every dish I saw being brought to tables looked delicious. The wine is very reasonably priced so do not fear that they are no longer BYOB. I will put this restaurant on my go to list."
