A word from Tre Amici
More than 20 years ago, three Italian boys from the Jersey Shore met on the baseball diamond, intent on dominating their local little league division. Now, they are returning to their roots, intent on dominating the New Jersey restaurant scene. Celebrated chef Matthew Zappoli, brother Paul Zappoli, and lifelong friend Michael Cacciuttolo have opened Tre Amici, or "Three Friends," on Ocean Avenue in Long Branch.

The three graduates of Middletown High School North, after making their careers elsewhere, have come home to Monmouth County. Executive Chef Matthew Zappoli, a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, hails from the kitchens of some of America's most celebrated restaurateurs – including Charlie Palmer and Sami Ledeki. Zappoli's innovative menus have pleased the palates of audiences in Manhattan, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Sonoma wine country.

I was very disappointed with the food and the service. The food was extremely salty and the service horrible. We had to follow up with the waiter on the drinks as no one was coming around to check on us.

We went to this place on a whim--with no expectations whatsoever. We were really pleased. The place is cozy, they had a great specials menu and the service was excellent. We were there on a Tuesday night and thought they drew a pretty decent size crowd for that time of the week.

Same people run the place, but the food seems a notch above it was before, don't know why, maybe the new scene. The meals, appetizer & soup were serve hot and smartly presented. A definite come-back to place.

Very good, responsive service - thoughtful menu, seasonal ingredients in specials, carefully prepared - delicious heirloom tomato / buffalo mozzarella salad! incorrect initial pasta in app was immediately replaced with original (whole wheat) order in a freshly-prepared new dish. Sausage and broccoli rabe homemade fettucini was perfect. Dramatically undercooked salmon was returned to kitchen and returned in the cut up pieces and was overcooked / dry - a disappointment - should have provided a new, properly cooked portion. No dessert tried this time. Would definitely return based on menu and very strong service.

Caesar salad and house salad was very good though saltier than expected. My crusted fillet of flounder was visually unappealing: too much green no crunchiness and salty. I had been to this restaurant before in a different location and had been much more satisfied with the food and the ambience of warmth and old world feeling. The gin and tonic was excellent.

My favorite restaurant. I wish I could come more often. The food is so delicious. On this visit we had the crab cakes which were just crab meat and so yummy. I had the braised short ribs over a jersey corn risotto, and my boyfriend had the pork chops with Brussels sprouts that were on special. We cleaned our plates it was so good. Even the bread and hummus is worth noting. The service was great, so attentive and nice. They knew when we needed something and when we wanted to be alone. They have a great wine list (My favorite is the J.Lohr). I can not wait to return for another amazing evening! Thank you Tre Amici!

We enjoyed an excellent seafood dinner at Tre Amici last Thursday evening. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and very attentive. The crab cake appetizer special was very tasty on a bed of delicious seasoned greens. My zuppa de pesce was perfect as was my husbands' crusted flounder dish. The vino and martinis were also very generous and priced well. Our cannoli dessert was wonderful and perfect for sharing. We will certainly be back in the future.

We've been to the old location several times and loved it! The new location is beautiful, but much smaller. It was our anniversary and the hostess sat us in a two top, we asked to move to another table where we can have our privacy. She was polite and did. The resturant was nowhere near full, she sat another couple right next to us. We could eat off their plate, they were so close! The woman was on her phone and we heard her entire conversation with her kids, then proceeded to show her husband a video on Facebook. Why did the hostess have to sit them next to us when there were several tables available? I do have to mention, it was a Wednesday. The scallop risotto was greasy and not the same as before. New isn't a always better.

We ate several times at their old location and loved it.Then, it was a "BYOB", which, for us, was a BIG "plus"! Now, it has a full bar, which takes up about 1/3 of the space in the restaurant. The "plus" concerning the bar is the bartender, Craig. They also have a happy hour which I believe starts at 4:30 p.m. and goes to 6 or 6:30 p.m. The reduced prices for those drinks and appetizers is a "plus". The two constants between the old place and new are the excellent food and service. The décor is unremarkable, except that it's all "hard surfaces" and causes the place to get VERY noisy when full. Having people at the bar using their laptops and watching one of the 3 TV's over the bar is evidence that the older, more elegant place is gone.

New venue is not as intimate as the old location. Feels very cold and stiff. Music was too loud and totally inappropriate for dining. With very few diners all one could hear was the overbearing music. Probably won't go back for that reason. Food is still very good. but not good enough for a return visit.

My special Summer Salad was tender, tasty and beautifully presented as was my main dish of Sea Scallops and Lobster Risotto! The Eggplant Parmesan with pasta was pure perfection! Although we do not live in this area of NJ, we will definitely be coming back to Tre Amici whenever we are at the beach!! Delicious!

Have gone to Tre Amici for years and was always one of our favorite go to spots. Went last week to the new location and was so disappointed. The menu change removed all the staple dishes of an Italian restaurant. No main chicken dish - parmigiana, Francese, Marsala- nothing. The appetizers we ordered were barely enough for one person and over priced. The main entrees were on the small side, over priced and tasted like an entire bottle of salt was used to make it. The food was never like that in the past. New location is nice but tables are stacked on top of each other. We were there at 5:30 on a Friday night and there were a couple tables but with the restaurant full the noise level would be very high. Service was mediocre.

Even before chef Zapoli won on the TV program Chopped, restaurant Tre Amici was a pearl in Long Branch. His use of fresh, local and organic foods surprises us each time we go for dinner and each new dish he creates is wonderful. Just last night, watermelon and caviar salad was the newest surprise. The pastas are all fantastic and if you like seafood ask for the octopus appetizer and the flounder. Last thing, since Tre Amici moved to its new location, they now sell their own liquor so no more BYOB needed which is incredibly convenient and their wine list is good.

Appetizer was a joke. Watermelon salad with three small chunks of watermelon for two people? Really? Bread served with no butter or olive oil. Dinner was also small and expensive for the serving size plus it was missing something...oh yeah TASTE! I ordered a margarita and it was served in a soda glass. I'll never go back. Zagat gave a 5 star rating too last time I trust them.

The food never disappoints but gone are the white table cloths, the music on the weekend, the nice atmosphere. The tables, especially in the front are too small and cramped, making it difficult for the servers to work. Gone is also the added perk of BYOB, since now there is a bar complete with TVs! We had the softshell crabs and crispy chicken with risotto and both dishes were excellent.

We have always loved this restaurant and its new location adds a sophisticated vibe - as always the food is amazing, the service on point and although no longer BYOB, the wines selection Is excellent. Although we usually share an appetizer I could not turn down the special 'watermelon' starter - fanciful, flavorful and beautifully presented. My duck 2 ways was perfect and my husbands veal dish delicious as always- a cheese platter ( a bit small) finished off a wonderful meal. We look forward to returning !

My wife and I have been regulars at the prior location. We were excited that they acquired a liquor license with a bar and went to the new location for the first time. The service and food were fantastic as always. We were surprised that the dining area was so much smaller. In fact, our table was so close to the bar, the parties at the bar apologized for any inconveniences caused. Next time, we would eat at the bar. All in all, we were surprised how much smaller the restaurant was just for a bar and liquor license.

We frequented the restaurant at the old location many times & enjoyed the ambience and food very much. We also enjoyed the fact that you were a BYOB. We have been to the restaurant twice since the move, and can honestly say that we will not be returning. Noise level is extremely high and the addition of the bar has made the cost as high as many other competitive restaurants. In addition all four of our dishes were very salty and in general disappointing. After recently reading reviews of other patrons on-line, many people share our opinion.

Second time at Tre Amici but first time at their new location. Nice restaurant, knowledgeable staff, and great meal. Appetizers were great, squid was so tender and yummy. Veal was prepared perfectly. Pasta dish was great with homemade pasta and shellfish. No room for dessert. Wine was good but wine list could be improved. Preferred BYOB over their wine list. We have eaten at Tre Amici many times and each meal has been good to great. The stuffed pork chop is one of my favorites and is always made to perfection and it is enough for 2 meals and a great value . However My opinion is that the original location was much nicer. The setting was nicer, suited for a nice dinner date with table cloths and live music a few nights. The new location still has great food and service, but the place is cramped and the servers can't get to some of the tables without bumping into you and the noise level on the weekends is great for a sports bar but not for the restaurant we had come to know and frequent. I will definitely still go for the food but will miss the original location.

Food quality and service were very good. Restaurant is relatively small. Small tables - the main course serving dish (which was large) took up practically the entire side of the table. Tables are too close together. Even a small person can barely squeeze in to the rear of the tables against the wall. Noise level is very high. Conversation is difficult due to noise level.

For starters I had the grilled octopus and my wife chose the special summer salad that featured watermelon topped with a balsamic caviar and pickled watermelon pieces surrounded by an olive powder. Evidently there are some molecular gastronomy techniques employed in the kitchen! For the main course I had the rabbit agnolotti and my wife had the Long Island duck two ways. The fresh home made agnolotti was filled with a combination of smoked rabbit and marscapone with truffle oil and served over a Madeira jus. The duck included a roasted breast, a confit leg and a black fig compote and was served with basmati rice. All of the dishes were delicious and we look forward to returning to Tre Amici to further explore the menu.

The food was between very good and superb. We shared the clams oreganato and they were very good - had a little tang to it. We both had Manhattan's to drink and they were great. What was outstanding was the Veal Saltimbocca - probably the best veal dish I have ever had. We were too full for dessert. The service has very friendly and efficient. The reason for not getting five stars was the noise level. Initially, my wife was ready to leave, or at least not come back to the restaurant. It was that bad. It got a little better, and based on the quality of the food, we will go back, but probably not on a Saturday night. If they get the noise level down, it would be one of the best restaurants in the area.

The food is very good but the noise level and the closeness to the next table spoil the dining experience.
