A word from Trax Restaurant & Cafe
Chef/Owner Steven Waxman opened Trax in the restored Ambler train station in 1989, after many years in his family wine business. Chef Waxman’s early career in the wine industry took him across the globe from Napa Valley and Burgundy – sampling fine wines & eating outstanding regional cuisine. Those early culinary experiences coupled with apprenticeships in restaurants along the East Coast motivated him to open his own restaurant, where people could enjoy food as extraordinary as the wines in their private collections. His goal was to prepare a menu that would satisfy the most discriminating palate – his own.

Whenever possible, Chef Waxman gets ingredients from small, local purveyors and farms that he knows he can trust. Some of the herbs and vegetables are even grown in the restaurant’s award-winning garden, which won a “Community Greening Award from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

Went with my husband after a recommrndation from a friend over 5 years ago. No idea why I waited so long. The food was carefully prepared and the entire menu came together nicely. The staff were courteous and professional and there was a good vibe throughout. An all around terrific dining experience.

This is my new favorite restaurant! What a fantastic experience! Went there for my birthday and had a wonderful dinner. Started with theFrench Onion soup which was light and not salty. Had the braised pork which was extremely tender and the flavor was delightfully subtle. Everything was fresh, well prepared and presented. The service was very good, attentive without being intrusive. Have highly recommended it to my friends. Looking forward to my next visit!

We go to Trax once a year. The food is usually good but we always think the servers are fair. Requests for drinks water bread come slowly. It is one of the reasons we do not frequent Trax as much as we would like. Because it is a more upscale kind of restaurant you would think the servers would be more catering to the diners. Small local places usually go to the next level in customer service. Trax has not found that type of server and its been years ...... with that said... the food is very good and the mealsare enjoyable.

trax cafe has been our favorite for a few years. the food is consistently good. The service is. usally excellent and it was good this timme, just not a very friendly server. It is a little on the loud side, but the ambiance and food more than make up for it. My only complaint is that the menu really has not changed ina. long time and i would like tosee more chicken/vegetarian options from time to time.

We dined on a Tuesday night for my husband's birthday and virtually had the place to ourselves. The food was delicious and the service was attentive and pleasant. We were seated promptly with a reservation. Service was excellent with no feeling we needed to rush. Our server was able to answer questions we had and make suggestions based on our tastes. The food was served attractively and hot and was most delicious. The appetizers had interest, the pork fell off the bone and the crab was wonderful. Portions were quite enough and not too much. We enjoyed the surroundings. The room was a little loud when we first came in, but settled as we progressed through the evening. Thank you for a wonderful evening!!

Delicious food and great atmosphere while sitting outside. There was a large noisy party inside, so I would be careful about sitting inside--it seemed extremely noisy to me. Also--a dog friendly place, which I didn’t realize or I would have brought my little one. The table next to us had their little puppy and he was adorable. The service was friendly but SLOW--not a problem for us because we weren’t in a hurry at all. They were very busy! Food was amazing!

I love a good risotto. The crab risotto special with shrimp and pesto was excellent. My wife loved the boulubais with a filet of skate on top. A shared peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream was a perfect end to our meal. The local chestnut hill coffee was also very good. Trax will definitely be a repeat destination for us.

We went to Trax on a Thursday evening. The restaurant was dark and none of the candles were lit on the table. We had to wait for our initial greeting (water, wine opening, etc.) because we could see that our waitress was busy watching Jeopardy in the kitchen with the other staff. The food was average at best and we ultimately finished our wine outside because we felt rushed to leave (we were one of two tables in the restaurant and the other couple left by 7:30). I would not recommend Trax to anyone and hope they can get themselves "back on track!"

After two rave reviews from colleagues, my wife and I decided to celebrate our 40th anniversary at Trax. Long and short: I wish we had gone elsewhere. We were shunted to our table for two in a dark corner (my wife used a pocket flashlight to see the menu). The noise level is very high because all of the surfaces in the restaurant are hard wood; it was difficult to hold a conversation. Service was efficient but brusque. Most of the food was good but not outstanding. (My wife's $30 filet mignon had a large mass of fat and gristle, and who serves plain white rice as a starch any longer?) We were so little impressed that we decided not to order dessert, and went to Cold Stone Creamery instead.

We get together with another couple once or twice a year. We always like to dine at a place where we can engage in conversation without a lot of background noise. We also especially like BYOB venues. Trax Café delivered on both accounts offering us a delicious meal enjoyed by everyone. There were a few seasonal "specials" offered including a shaved fennel and apple salad and a homemade pasta entry with sausage and herbs - both were delicious.

We have eaten here on several occasions and they have always been very good. This by far was our worst experience. The salads were way under par. The salmon was rare and we ordered medium. The service seemed to want to rush us out the door. We will give them another chance based on our past experience.

We frequently find ourselves in Ambler for dinner and when we want that special meal, Trax is the place. Last week we were treated to an outside table on a delightful evening, even when the R5 trains went by. Our server, Daniel, was very helpful in guiding us through menu selections and our meals were wonderful. My wife is sensitive to black pepper and the chef was very accommodating to make up a scallop risotto with an alternate, pepper-free sauce. Chef even stopped by our table to check on our entrees and was pleased to hear that we were very satisfied. In one sentence, a great BYO with a delightful menu and knowledgeable wait staff. Do try Trax.

We've dined at Trax before and found the food really well prepared and tasty. Not so during Restaurant week. We ordered from the price fixe menu. My husband ordered a caesar salad which was nothing special and I ordered a tomato mozzarella starter that was fine. The main entrees we ordered were the lobster and scallop alfredo which were a big disappointment. You had to really hunt for the lobster which I still question was even included and the bay scallops were too small and not tasty. The dessert finale of peach cobler was overcooked and dried out. For $35 per person this was not worth the money. We wished we went somewhere else. To top it off we were seated ON the railroad tracks. Which was a mistake.

Overall great experience. First time dining at Trax, sat outside way down by the railroad. there is a line of tables along the tracks, pretty secluded and apart from other patrons. Food was excellent, wife and I had the daily specials (swordfish and risotto). Pefectly cooked and seasoned. Service was also excellent - great knowledge of the meals, pairing with wine, some local knowledge about the Ambler train station. Our reservation was at 8, so the trains were still running every 15-30 mins, so a little loud when it come through. But reminded me of little restaurants in Europe near small stations.

My husband and I just moved to the Ambler area and decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary @ Trax. It was a beautiful night and we sat outside, which was lovely. Their food was impressive. I've been to so many restaurants recently that over season their food. The food at Trax was prepared perfectly with fresh, local ingredients. I would definitely return, although I've heard that dining inside during the colder months isn't nearly as nice.

I love Trax - the service is always great, the food is inventive and delicious, and I love sitting outside and seeing the trains go by. The fact that you have to halt conversation here and there when the train whistle makes it impossible to hear only adds to the ambiance of this "neighborhood gem." My most recent visit was during Ambler's "Restaurant Week," and the $35 3-course meal was top-notch. I had their version of a caprese salad (a tomato sliced and layered with fresh local mozzarella and topped with pesto), linguine with lobster and scallops in a blush sauce, and a peach crisp with ice cream and strawberry sauce for dessert. DELISH!!
