A word from Trax Restaurant & Cafe
Chef/Owner Steven Waxman opened Trax in the restored Ambler train station in 1989, after many years in his family wine business. Chef Waxman’s early career in the wine industry took him across the globe from Napa Valley and Burgundy – sampling fine wines & eating outstanding regional cuisine. Those early culinary experiences coupled with apprenticeships in restaurants along the East Coast motivated him to open his own restaurant, where people could enjoy food as extraordinary as the wines in their private collections. His goal was to prepare a menu that would satisfy the most discriminating palate – his own.

Whenever possible, Chef Waxman gets ingredients from small, local purveyors and farms that he knows he can trust. Some of the herbs and vegetables are even grown in the restaurant’s award-winning garden, which won a “Community Greening Award from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

  • "First time we have been at Trax in a while. We sat down to find there was a restaurant week special, which was great. I thought the menu gave us enough options to go with the three course price fix. We put our order in and sat..... for a while. The waitress did come and apologize, but the restaurant really wasn't busy enough for this delay. Apps came and they were good, and then we waited again. Dinner a was good again and we don't like to be rushed but this was the opposite. So don't be in a hurry or even on a schedule. The ambiance is nice and it is more roomy then on previous visits and the food is always good."

I think the hostess could have been dressed more appropriately than black spandex head to toe and neon sneakers. She looked like she was going out for a run. The food was wonderful!"

  • "Took my mom here for dinner as it is now one of her favorite spots. I requested a quite table by the window and when we walked into the restaurant, our table was waiting as requested. The ambiance in the restaurant is quaint and subdued and it is fun watching the trains go by. The restaurant is dark, but nicely lit with tea lights that makes the dining room very relaxing. The food was very good and Kate our server was very friendly and efficient and makes sure that you are well taken care of. Prices are a little on the high side, but since it is a BYOB, it is still a better deal than most nice restaurants."

  • "What can I say? - this is our 6th or 7th time dining here - the food and service were once again excellent. As it was a nice evening we dined outside at a table close to the train tracks, and train traffic was low. We enjoyed our dinner so much even if a train had gone by we didn't notice! Staff and servers provided were their usual great service. They had my favorite soup, and adjusted my wife's order to accommodate her gluten intolerance. Can't wait for an excuse to go back again."

  • "Best risotto ever! The scallops, stuffed portobello mushrooms and prosciutto wrapped asparagus were fantastic too. Don't stop there - the deserts were great too! All of this and some great ambience from a soulful and angelic voice playing some coffee house style music on the guitar. A great dining treat all around!"

  • "I would highly recommend this BYOB restaurant. The food was amazing, especially the asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, crab risotto with scallops and the sea bass. I would suggest, if sitting outside, to sit away from the railroad tracks. The noise and wind from the train is annoying. Other than that, this is a great place to go."

We sat out in the garden, which was lovely! The only issue was that our server seemed to have a very large area to cover and therefore a little scattered. "

  • "It was a wonderful night for outdoor dining - temperature just right - no bugs and the overhang kept away the gentle rain that fell intermittently. When a train goes by it is a conversation stopper (and then restarter), but it is overall very pleasant on a nice night (from previous experience, I'd give the indoor dining ambience a 3 star score- it's a bit crowded and loud, when everyone is packed in). The food is reliably good at Trax - the crab cakes and lamb dishes are among my favorites."

  • "Could be we just ordered the wrong thing. Our friends are vegetarian, and they were thrilled with what the chef prepared for them. My salmon was tasty but overdone, and my husband's slow cooked braised beef was not tender at all. The atmosphere is fun --with the trains rolling by, it's different and kind of cool. The service was friendly and attentive. I would try again."

  • "The food is fantastic, but both times I was at Trax there was a large group that was so loud I found it hard to carry on a conversation with my dinner partner. The dining room is very small and intimate, and if there's a large group, it's almost impossible for anyone else to have an enjoyable experience. We asked to move outside, which was very nice, and weather permitting, I would recommend eating outdoors on their back patio. If you're a fan of trains, the R5 roars past periodically, which offers a sense of travel romance."

  • "This was our 3rd visit to this restaurant and we made reservations for a Friday evening. The restaurant was totally empty, with one other couple besides us. The waitress was arrogant, discourteous, and with such few people she still seemed, to rush us, and when we requested to wait to order our dinner, we felt she wanted to see what was good for the chef and kitchen staff. We are very disappointed and felt it was a most unemployable evening, when we just wanted to relax and enjoy after a busy week."

  • "If you are just looking for a casual dinner and trying some place new, this is worth a visit. It is extremely small, which makes it very "warm", but the noise level can get a bit loud, although not in a disruptive way. (there is outdoor seating, we could not use, but would definitely change the space/noise factor). The service was friendly and attentive. BYOB - which keeps the bill reasonable. The food was presented well, but no real "wow" factor. If having a fabulous culinary experience is your goal, then this is not the place for you. if you just want a night out with friends in a pleasant atmosphere with tasty, although not amazing food - You should put this on your list."

  • "Smallish, a bit cramped and quite noisy. That said, the waitstaff is attentive and the food sufficiently varied and good. The cod special was OK, the salmon quite good and the mushroom bisque excellent. Desserts limited in number, but sufficiently varied and quite good. BYOB, with iced bucket provided for white wine. We used it as a pre-theater meal (Act 2 in Ambler just a few blocks away) but it's fine for just a single evening out."

  • "Trax is a great place to enjoy a really good meal. It's BYOB so you save money. We got the french onion and salad wedge with house cured bacon. The soup was unique as it used white onions and Gruyere cheese mixed together with some croutons for a new taste. The salad was only OK. For the dinner, we had the bay scallops and lobster meat over fettuccine with vodka rosa sauce and tilapia with rice, mango salsa, and crab meat. Both were outstanding. We finished with the chocolate mousse. Great food and nice setting. Highly recommended."

  • "We had a great time. You could tell it was a chef's menu because the dish selection was limited, but varied for different palettes. The blending of proteins and flavors was interesting. If you like a "chef's" restaurant and like to try new stuff or just like a classic done very well, I recommend this restaurant. The staff was polite, informative, and courteous."

  • "We found ourselves empty nesters for the night and not wanting to cook. Fortunately we were able to secure a late reservation at Trax. We have been there several times and enjoy the cozy restaurant within a restored train station. Dinner selections of beef, veal, fish, chicken and pasta entre's are prepared with local ingrediants. Service was attentive and our meal was served promptly. Our veal and pasta dinners were prepared to perfection. For us, a big plus is the BYOB."

  • "We chose this restaurant due to the extension of restaurant week which was clearly posted on their website. When we got there and asked the waiter, he, at first, said it was over. Then when we asked again he checked and explained that you had to reserve that menu. As he walked away and we questioned him again, he said he would work something out. What he worked out was that we paid more than restaurant week in the end. It was very disappointing. We checked the website right there at the table and it said nothing about this special reservation. Restaurant is nice but really loud. It is hard to hear people at your table."

  • "Trax is a wonderful little place located in a converted railway station. We had dinner on a Saturday night before a show at the nearby Act 2 Playhouse. It was restaurant week and so there was a 3 course limited menu. Everything was delicious and the waitstaff was friendly and took very good care of us. We are hoping to go back soon to try their regular menu. It's BYOB, so don't forget your wine!"
