A word from Trax Restaurant & Cafe
Chef/Owner Steven Waxman opened Trax in the restored Ambler train station in 1989, after many years in his family wine business. Chef Waxman’s early career in the wine industry took him across the globe from Napa Valley and Burgundy – sampling fine wines & eating outstanding regional cuisine. Those early culinary experiences coupled with apprenticeships in restaurants along the East Coast motivated him to open his own restaurant, where people could enjoy food as extraordinary as the wines in their private collections. His goal was to prepare a menu that would satisfy the most discriminating palate – his own.

Whenever possible, Chef Waxman gets ingredients from small, local purveyors and farms that he knows he can trust. Some of the herbs and vegetables are even grown in the restaurant’s award-winning garden, which won a “Community Greening Award from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

Diner Reviews
  • "If you are just looking for a casual dinner and trying some place new, this is worth a visit. It is extremely small, which makes it very "warm", but the noise level can get a bit loud, although not in a disruptive way. (there is outdoor seating, we could not use, but would definitely change the space/noise factor). The service was friendly and attentive. BYOB - which keeps the bill reasonable. The food was presented well, but no real "wow" factor. If having a fabulous culinary experience is your goal, then this is not the place for you. if you just want a night out with friends in a pleasant atmosphere with tasty, although not amazing food - You should put this on your list."

  • "A fun evening out; attentive service, delicious food, nice ambience."

  • "Smallish, a bit cramped and quite noisy. That said, the waitstaff is attentive and the food sufficiently varied and good. The cod special was OK, the salmon quite good and the mushroom bisque excellent. Desserts limited in number, but sufficiently varied and quite good. BYOB, with iced bucket provided for white wine. We used it as a pre-theater meal (Act 2 in Ambler just a few blocks away) but it's fine for just a single evening out."

  • "It's a very small space so it's loud and hard to regulate the temperature. We were alternately hot (the heating vent was under our table) and cold (when the front door opened). Food and service were great."

  • "Trax is a great place to enjoy a really good meal. It's BYOB so you save money. We got the french onion and salad wedge with house cured bacon. The soup was unique as it used white onions and Gruyere cheese mixed together with some croutons for a new taste. The salad was only OK. For the dinner, we had the bay scallops and lobster meat over fettuccine with vodka rosa sauce and tilapia with rice, mango salsa, and crab meat. Both were outstanding. We finished with the chocolate mousse. Great food and nice setting. Highly recommended."

  • "Our fourth time at Trax; once again fantastic food. Always something new to try, plenty of choices, and great service."

  • "Did not like that there was a fixed menu for Valentine's day. Expensive meal that was not worth the price. The scallops were mushy."

  • "Our experience on Valentines day was exceptional. Trax offered a price fix 4 course menu. The choices gave a wide variety of choices, all of which were tempting. The price was extremely fair and as a BYO, the experience was very memorable. Definitely on my list for a favorite place to dine."

  • "Food was not good and the fixed price menu was pretty expensive."

  • "My wife and I have frequented Trax on many occasions. We are never disappointed with our meal choices. Would highly recommend this neighborhood gem in the Ambler area. You can't go wrong."

  • "We found ourselves empty nesters for the night and not wanting to cook. Fortunately we were able to secure a late reservation at Trax. We have been there several times and enjoy the cozy restaurant within a restored train station. Dinner selections of beef, veal, fish, chicken and pasta entre's are prepared with local ingrediants. Service was attentive and our meal was served promptly. Our veal and pasta dinners were prepared to perfection. For us, a big plus is the BYOB."

  • "We had a great time. You could tell it was a chef's menu because the dish selection was limited, but varied for different palettes. The blending of proteins and flavors was interesting. If you like a "chef's" restaurant and like to try new stuff or just like a classic done very well, I recommend this restaurant. The staff was polite, informative, and courteous."

  • "We chose this restaurant due to the extension of restaurant week which was clearly posted on their website. When we got there and asked the waiter, he, at first, said it was over. Then when we asked again he checked and explained that you had to reserve that menu. As he walked away and we questioned him again, he said he would work something out. What he worked out was that we paid more than restaurant week in the end. It was very disappointing. We checked the website right there at the table and it said nothing about this special reservation. Restaurant is nice but really loud. It is hard to hear people at your table."

  • "Trax is a wonderful little place located in a converted railway station. We had dinner on a Saturday night before a show at the nearby Act 2 Playhouse. It was restaurant week and so there was a 3 course limited menu. Everything was delicious and the waitstaff was friendly and took very good care of us. We are hoping to go back soon to try their regular menu. It's BYOB, so don't forget your wine!"

  • "This was our first visit. It was Restaurant Week and the restaurant was very busy and VERY LOUD - too loud. We had to wait about 15 minutes for our reservation, which I know is something that is not always within a restaurant's control. But because of the small size of the restaurant, there is no comfortable place to wait, so we had to wait in the entrance. Food was good but not memorable. I might try the restaurant again, but definitely not on a busy night."

  • "The food is well prepared, with flavors that explode on the first bites. Amounts are not too much. A bit expensive for a dinner for 2 - we bring our own wine and with a 20% tip averages $100. We could eat less appetizers and desserts, but, oh my, they are so worth ordering. We love our community gem - it is on our top 5 places to dine out."

  • "Our recent dinner at Trax Cafe was fantastic! We had the bet table in the house, to the left of the fireplace in the window. Very cozy! Our meal and the service was great!"

  • "Trax never disappoints in their menu selection or their friendly service."

  • "We had a wonderful meal at Trax. It is a small, intimate little place, which I just love. It was noisy, but not so much so that you couldn't enjoy the evening. When they put some jazz on at the end of the night, it was better. I wish they had started the music earlier. I would definitely recommend Trax, and we plan to return."

  • "Trax is the best place to eat in Ambler, and it's not even close."
    Dined on 1/11/2014
  • "Trax is by far the best restaurant in Ambler. The food is always fresh and delicious, portions are perfect-you don't leave hungry but also don't feel like you gorged yourself. I'm never let down. Keep it up!"

  • "As has been a family tradition for the past 14 years, we celebrated our NYE with dinner at Trax. As expected, we were not disappointed. My son and I had the sushi grade Tuna entre which was cooked to perfection (RARE) and undoubtedly the best I ever had. My wife and daughter had the crab and shrimp risotto topped with large, tender scallops entre which they toughly enjoyed. My son's wife, a vegan, had pasta with vegetables that she said was just "perfect." Our daughter's friend had the veal chop entre and when he finished there was "nothing left." Since Trax is a BYOB we were able to bring our favorite white and red wines. And Kate, our waitress, was, as usual, a pleasant and efficient server always anticipating our every need."

  • "We met friends at Trax to celebrate our child's college graduation with a nice dinner. Food and service was excellent. Pork Chop was absolutely outstanding! Prices were reasonable for the quality and amount of food. Glad we went here!"

  • "We should have been advised that there was to be an extremely noisy office party going that evening when we made our reservation. There was no way we could have any conversation with the other couple at our table."
    Dined on 12/18/2013
  • "Food and service were excellent. Environment was marred by noise. Like the rooms of many old Reading Railway stations, this room suffers from bad reverberations that serve to amplify the noise from any noisy parties. As old railroad devotees, however, we enjoyed our table in the old waiting room which was by the window so we could watch the trains."

  • "I've been to Trax three times this year, so I believe I have gathered enough experience to give it a fair review. I find the service to be good and sometimes excellent. This is a hard rating because some dishes are unbelievably tasty and gorgeous, while others are blah/bland. Here are some examples: The short rib special was fabulous, while the bouillabaisse I had this past weekend was perfectly cooked, yet bland. I was struggling to taste some saffron, which was the main reason I ordered the dish. The roasted brussels sprouts appetizer is really tasty, while the baked macaroni and cheese app was bland. I will keep trying, but I'd really like to know which dishes are tasty and which I should avoid."

  • "Trax has a great location and the quality of the food was very ,very good. main concern was that the prices were high .I would have expected a little more attentive service in a restaurant priced at this level and it was not a busy night. These two issues could be improved."

  • "The food is delicious but when it's cold outside expect to be cold inside and dress accordingly."

  • "Once again we returned to Trax and had an absolutely delicious meal. There were four of us, all had different entrees and we were all quite happy with our choices. We all did price fixe--ribs; pasta with mushrooms; chicken; salmon. Just the right amount of food and the quality is outstanding!"

  • "I have praised everything about this little gem in Ambler many, many times which is why I keep returning, usually with friends and family. The menu is always in keeping with the seasons, especially in the summer when fresh herbs and veggies from Steve's garden are included in every dish. The duck finds its way to my plate nearly every time but in between it's the crab cakes, scallops, or a special new to the choices. Definitely the fruit cobbler for dessert, to be shared by the table."

  • "Went with my husband after a recommrndation from a friend over 5 years ago. No idea why I waited so long. The food was carefully prepared and the entire menu came together nicely. The staff were courteous and professional and there was a good vibe throughout. An all around terrific dining experience."

  • "This is my new favorite restaurant! What a fantastic experience! Went there for my birthday and had a wonderful dinner. Started with theFrench Onion soup which was light and not salty. Had the braised pork which was extremely tender and the flavor was delightfully subtle. Everything was fresh, well prepared and presented. The service was very good, attentive without being intrusive. Have highly recommended it to my friends. Looking forward to my next visit!"

  • "We go to Trax once a year. The food is usually good but we always think the servers are fair. Requests for drinks water bread come slowly. It is one of the reasons we do not frequent Trax as much as we would like. Because it is a more upscale kind of restaurant you would think the servers would be more catering to the diners. Small local places usually go to the next level in customer service. Trax has not found that type of server and its been years ...... with that said... the food is very good and the mealsare enjoyable."

  • "Food was good, our server was just OK, restaurant was very noisy so don't expect to have intimate evening but it was fine for nice meal. Menu limited and they don't easily accommodate to change on a Saturday."

  • "trax cafe has been our favorite for a few years. the food is consistently good. The service is. usally excellent and it was good this timme, just not a very friendly server. It is a little on the loud side, but the ambiance and food more than make up for it. My only complaint is that the menu really has not changed ina. long time and i would like tosee more chicken/vegetarian options from time to time."

  • "We dined on a Tuesday night for my husband's birthday and virtually had the place to ourselves. The food was delicious and the service was attentive and pleasant. In the past, we've typically dined here on a Saturday night but we will definitely think of it in the future as a great mid-week option."
