Diner Reviews
  • "This was my first visit and I was very impressed. The food was fantastic....to be savored. The service was OK....needs some work. Decor interesting. Noise too loud for quiet conversation. I'd return for the food anytime!"

  • "Quality of food reflected high volume, long wait on stove or heat lamps, didn't live up to reputation or description. Restaurant Week portions more "tasting menu" & overcooked. Servers Not your new BFF."

  • "This Trattoria has food as well prepared as the original Il Mulino. However, the service lacks interest and attentiveness. We were 4 people. Three ordered a bottle of wine and one ordered a drink. The wine arrived and was poured but about 10 minutes later, we had to ask again for the drink. There was no apology. They ran out of breadsticks at 8 PM on a Sunday night an decided not to make more since the restaurant was not crowded. The servers were courteous but did not show the kind of professionalism you would expect in a fine New York City restaurant."

  • "First time here and did not disappoint... Wonderful interior design with food and service to match... Judy happens to be down the block from the famous " Gramercy Tavern".."

  • "The found was amazing! I dreamed about the barata on watermelon for the next week! The mushroom raviolis, grilled octopus and stuffed calamari special were all exceptional. The staff was great, very knowledgeable and offered us complimentary shots at the end of our meal! Will absolutely go back."

  • "The food was great but the service was so aggressive that we felt rushed throughout the dinner. The reception was not very welcoming either. Hope the place will be ran better soon."

  • "Went here because of restaurant week, wanted to try something new! Loved the truffle ravioli, absolutely delicious. Pizza is fabulous too! Noise level was annoying, although of course it was busy. I feel like if they added buffers to the ceiling to detract from the noise it would be such finer experience. All in all I would recommend the place again, the staff was friendly, great food, and cool atmosphere."

  • "I came across this restaurant based on a friend who loves the original Il Mulino. The restaurant is very modern and comfortable, a little darker, and definitely was busy by the time we got our food around 7:30pm. Dinner was great, I especially enjoyed their wine selection. Before eating the bar tender was very helpful in making wine suggestions and even allowed me to taste before I made a final decision. Overall great experience, and worth trying during Restaurant Week!"

  • "The services from the bust boys are very good and the 4 stars all go to them.... the maî·tre d' and the waiter can learn a lot from the lower level workers. The octopus appetizer is very good.. but the quality of food goes down from there in each course."

  • "Great food, but spotty service. We had to keep asking for wine from the bottle we ordered bc they wouldn't put it on the table. In addition, they didn't ask if we wanted another bottle after we finished the first (which we did) nor did they ask if we wanted any more drinks. They lost out on additional revenue due to spotty service. The noise level was very high."

  • "I have been to other il mulinos. The service was very slow amd overwhelmed. The noise level was deafening"

  • "We were seated promptly for our 6:45 reso. When they heard we wanted the restaurant week menu, they weren't happy. Portions were tiny, and after sitting there for an hour and a half, our main courses hadn't come out yet. After two and a half hours, dessert hadn't come out, so I left without the third course of my prix fixe three course meal. Kitchen has serious issues as it wasn't only our table."

  • "Overpriced for what it is. Not the Il Mulino of old, trading on the name of a former great restaurant. Prices of entrees not worth it especially when all the side dishes are an additional $10"
    Dined on 7/22/2014
  • "They better get their act together soon or they will destroy the good name of Il Mulino. The noise is not baffled and severely impedes any effort at normal conversation. The server was energetic and eager to please, but was totally undermined by the failure of a colleague, who was apparently responsible, to distribute menus. Also, the kitchen was exceedingly slow, and it took approximately an hour and a half to get our entrees even though it was late evening and the restaurant was emptying out. The food was mixed, and my wife suffered severe GI distress after the meal, probably from the oysters. I welcomed the Trattoria because I have always though Il Mulino was the best Italian restaurant in NYC, but we won't be going back to this one."

  • "We went to Trattoria IL Molino for New York restaurant week. The lunch menu was very good. There were so many other dishes I would have loved to try but it was a wonderful experience and I will go back."

  • "Very nice restaurant with good food and service. Amazing to say.. that the music was great also but noisy room."

  • "It is so loud at 8pm that hearing your dining companions or the wait staff is really tough! Some sound absorbing tiles would help tremendously."

  • "Very accommodating, food is incredible, will take special requests to menu which is hard to find in the city."

  • "food is good, but everytime that I have been there ( multiple times), there has been some problem with the kitchen, the service or reservation. They still don't have act together."

  • "Once again you can't be disappointed at an Il Mulino restaurant. Great lunch with a "special lunch deal" that can't be beat. Service is very attentive. Really good pizza as a starter followed by solid lunch with a very good Lemoncello Tiramisu Can't beat this place for a business lunch"

  • "one of my favorite restaurants in manhattan with a great menu"

  • "We were so excited when Il Mulino opened in the Gramercy area as we had never made it to their Village location. Although everything was good it did not live up to our, perhaps unrealistic, expectations. Everything was good- maybe even very good if prices weren't so high. Just not exceptional. The lemoncello tiramisu dessert was the only item which was unique, delicious and truely exceptional."

  • "I wanted a quiet lunch but entered a noisy bar like place with soccer game on full blast. Waited 15 min to order just ok food. The place is understaffed and mismanaged. I'll stick with Il Mulino midtown with very attentive service and expensive but excellent food."

  • "the space and decor was great but the food is awful. very limited mundane menu. sweet server who could not easily explain the simple dishes. Most delicious item was the grilled eggplant which was complimentary."

  • "Delicious but very loud. Service was good. Would go again, just not during the World Cup."

  • "We shared a pizza and pasta. Was very good. My husband ordered the veal chop too. Seems like it is more poplar for the later crowd. Our reservation was 8:30pm. Will look forward to returning there"

  • "If there are brain circuits that can kill your senses, especially taste, when noise levels are near deafening, then this is the restaurant to use for testing. OK, Saturday night had a World Cup match on TV, but I could have stayed at home to watch it. We wanted great Italian food; and this restaurant's chef can provide it. But, the space designer created something like a railroad station waiting area for your other senses. Hard, noise-amplifying surfaces everywhere: all the walls, bare floor, hard chairs, etc.. Conversation even to the adjacent diner was impossible, much less across the table. It is a shame the generally excellent food is presented in such a terrible environment. The prices charged should pay for at least some carpeting."

  • "From the moment you walk into the restaurant you are greeted warmly. We first sat at bar and ordered a bottle of wine recommended by the amazing bartender. From there we were seated at a great table by the window and had an amazing culinary experience. We tried several homemade pastas that were scrumptious. Dessert was the best ever lemon tiramisu. I will go back repeatedly!!"

  • "Best lunch deal in NYC and the Lemon Tirimisu is amazing. Great Watermelon Salad, meatballs, and the garlic breads are such a bonus!"

  • "I have been to Il Mulino on 3rd Street several times and always had a delicious meal so when a friend reccommended Trattoria Il Mulino I was eager to check it out. From the moment I walked in I was impressed with how they transformed the space from the prior restaurant that had been there. It was so open and the decor chic and modern. We were seated immediately and the waiter came over and greeted us shortly after. He was able to answer any questions we had about the menu and made some great recommendations. The food was delicious and I will definitely be back!"

  • "Four of us had delicious food, lovely service, etc. It was quite pricey. I don't think this location has caught on for brunch because it was rather empty. I've been there previously for lunch and once for dinner. Lunch was equally pleasant. For our taste, and we are older people, it was just too noisy at dinner. But if you like a party atmosphere with a lively bar and loud-ish music -- along with excellent food, this is a great dinner place for you. "

  • "Absolutely outstanding meal! First time at Trattoria Il Mulino and as long patrons of the original Il Mulino on 3rd Street I can tell you it did not disappoint. Everything we ordered was prepared to perfection and like the original, each was a generous portion. The Trattoria offers some different menu items in additional to the old favorites that we had and we can't wait to go back and try them all. Hopefully we'll still be able to get a timely reservation!"

  • "The food is excellent and presentation beautiful. Excellent variety of choices. Plenty of things on the menue if you are a vegetarian as well. I Only have been there for lunch where the prix fixe menue is very reasonable. It may be the best deal in NYC. "

  • "I came here with my family for a graduation celebration. I made notes in my reservation via OpenTable and called ahead of time to explain it would be a celebration dinner. I also noted that my dad is handicapped and needs certain seating. When I showed up, the host had no idea what I was talking about. Additionally, a sporting event was being projected on a wall. I didn't expect this to be that type of establishment, especially with entrees averaging $30+. I was very disappointed my parents wasted so much money on this meal. The restaurant was very loud, the serve was poor, the food was average at best. There was also no acknowledge of the special occasion. Sad."

  • "A fan of the original location. Service was terrible. Wine order was delivered wrong. Bread server could not tell us the selections. There was a huge loaf of (most likely a whole wheat) which my companion asked for, and was given the 1 inch nub of the end. I ordered the Shrimp Francese, which was a bland butterflied Shrimp in lemon and parsley sauce. Asked our server for dessert suggestion, told him we couldn't have any of the selections with Walnuts. He made two suggestions, we choose the Chocolate Cake which the menu said was served with Espresso zabaglione and roasted pear. When we received the Cake the "espresso zabaglione" had chunks in it. When asked told they were walnuts which were in the cake as well."

  • "Kudos for excellent attitude, service, attentiveness and food - beautifully presented, amply portioned and exquisitely flavorful. We wandered in on a recent weekend in New York, looking for a quiet and relaxing dinner after a drive up from DC through torrential downpours. No reso's, no fanfare, just two hungry travelers. Their smiles welcomed us, their gracious hospitality made us forget the travails of the day, and we were served by 'Sarah,' one of the most well-mannered, efficient and thoughtful waiters we've encountered anywhere in the world. Their stuffed fig was sublime, as were the flavors of everything else that made its way to our table. Serendipity - oh how I love you!"

  • "I had a special of fried squash blossoms stuffed with mozzarella which were nice and crispy, but as is the risk with frying such a delicate vegetable, the fried flavor was very prominent and needed a bit of acid to cut through the heavy cheese and fried flavors. Then I had the tagliatelle with lobster which was very nice and maintained the dignity and flavor of the lobster and had a nice balance with the tomato sauce it was tossed in. For dessert, I had the lemon tiramisu which was a total miss; a soggy chunk of tart, pungent sod that puckered my lips and left me wondering if some of that lost lemon life couldn't have been better spent elevating the squash blossoms. Overall, it was nice, straightforward Italian fare; solid for weeknights."
