Diner Reviews
  • "Lovely, quiet place with quality menu options. Like being in Italy. What i liked was for a Sun. eve. was able to get a rez day before when lot of other places were booked. Large dining room, and quiet, a big change from teeny places bursting with folks and loud talk. Plus large outdoor option, ie., lovely garden seating. For us, a winner."

  • "We dined in after going to the theater. The restaurant was not too busy or crowded. We were seated immediately, however, several minutes passed and we flagged down the bar tender to order our food as our waiter did not return. The food was basic but good and was served promptly. We were glad we ate after theater so the lack of service did not affect our timing."

  • "Nice neighborhood restaurant to complement a night at the Royal George or Steppenwolf. Wonderful menu selection and food is authentic and delicious."

  • "After attending Steppenwolf, Gianni's is a great place for after theater eating. It is convenient and has valet parking in addition to a wonderful patio. Ambience in this place is great."

  • "My vegetarian family (10 people) attended this restaurant for dinner on a Friday night. We were able to make reservations pretty easily, which was one of the reasons we chose it. The food and service were great. The restaurant itself has the tucked-in NYC feel. The vegetarian selections are delicious, including the off-the-menu selections that the waiter suggested AND the eggplant parmesan that we requested. The eggplant parmesan was one of the best that I've ever had. It wasn't heavily encrusted and the eggplant itself was fresh and perfectly cooked. The cannoli at the end of the night is well worth it, so save room!"

  • "This is a great spot for a pre-Steppenwolf performance meal. Friendly Sicilian owner on the premise. Great, authentic, mostly southern Italian menu. A little or a lot, depending upon your hunger. Attentive staff will have you out the door, to cross the street, in perfect timing to the Theatre,"

  • "The outdoor patio is very nice and comfortable. The food is good enough and I would probably try it again. They didn't seem to have enough waitstaff the night we were there and service was very, very slow."

  • "Outdoor space is just lovely, food is amazing and everyone was very friendly. If you have not tried this hidden gem do so! You won't regret it!"

  • "We eat in this area several times a year and for some reason seldom pick Trattoria Gianni. Sitting outside on the patio had beautiful ambience, however the food presentation and taste just doesn't stack up in our opinion against the other local restaurants. However, the outdoor patio was pretty crowded so obviously others don't agree with us. Of the 4 entrees - the gnocchi was the best!"

  • "Food was good, but our server was awkward and made us feel like we had never been to a restaurant before. He came off as rude and arrogant."

  • "Gianni's made our mother's 80th birthday special. The food was great, the outdoor seating was comfortable and nicely decorated. Mom loved all the attention. They accommodated our party of 12 with a smile. It was a great find."

  • "We went here after a show at the Royal George Theater. It is very close to the theater. We were fortunate the weather was beautiful so we were able to eat outside. It was a very nice setting. As the sun began to set they brought around candles to each table with made it even nicer. To start, we ordered the bruschetta and Polenta al Funghi di Bosco Both were very good but I particularly liked the polenta. Two of us had the Risotto Funghi-we both really liked it. The other two had pasta,Cappellini al Pomodoro and Ravioli Burro, and both said their dishes were very good."

  • "Nice spot in the Steppenwolf area where if you tell them you have a 7:30 curtain, they make sure to take your order and serve it soon after. I don't think of Gianni as a destination unless headed for the theatre."

  • "Our reservation was honored on time, service was pretty good for the most part, but I did not appreciate being talked up into a different price bracket for the bottle of wine we were considering ordering. I know I could have said no, but who wants to be considered a "cheapskate?" The burrata was exceptional, the pork chop very mediocre, my dining companions seemed to enjoy the pasta, and the ambiance was very nice (rain was threatening or we may have opted to sit outdoors on the very enticing patio). Certainly very convenient for before or after Steppenwolf theater performances."

  • "We enjoyed a lovely pre-Steppenwolf dinner at Trattoria Gianni's recently. Excellent food, both in-door and outdoor garden tables, gracious service, and background music at a level for music lovers and conversationalists alike. The restaurant is located directly across the street from the theater and has been in operation for years. We're sorry we didn't step in the door sooner. We'll be back."

  • "We had dined here before theater several times previously....it was never outstanding, but acceptable. This time, nothing went right. Salads were slow coming...the smallest basil leaf I ever saw dressed the top of the caprice salad, one entree order was completely wrong, the more expensive salmon dish was substituted for a less expensive one ordered & couldn't be replaced in a timely manner & the obviously previously baked piece of salmon was burnt on the outside, an obvious attempt to make it looked broiled gone wrong. The by- the -glass wine serving came in a microscopic glass only half filled. We never saw the waiter after he took our order. They must have sensed something was wrong, but the comp'ed desert wine was about one teaspoon."

  • "Trattoria Gianni was the perfect fit for a dinner prior to hitting a show at Steppenwolf. The service was quick and attentive. The server asked if we were going to the theater as we were seated and the dining pace was unhurried, but clearly mindful of the clock. The food was simple and good, not tremendous. Really the right fit for the occasion."

  • "Trattoria Gianni has stood the test of time. The food has remained tasty, up-to-date and a good value for many years. The addition of an outdoor eating area is a real plus during the summer months. Although that eating area faces the street, street noise is not an issue as the sound is buffered by plantings. Another plus is that Trattoria Gianni is an dining excellent choice when attending neighborhood theaters such as Steppenwolf or Royal George. The waitstaff understands the need for restaurant patrons to be served in a timely manner. It's always a pleasure to dine at Trattoria Gianni."

  • "The service is great and we love the food. It's our favorite place in the city. The owner takes great pains to make sure that everything is perfect and that the service, and atmosphere are top notch. In the summer, there is a lovely patio so you can choose to dine inside or outside."

  • "Nice to be able to just walk across the street from a play to get dinner. Cozy little spot, nice outdoor seating, attentive staff. The beet salad was nice, but I was not able to finish it before my entree arrived. My salmon was good but the veggies were over cooked. Still. I would recommend this spot for a before or after theater experience, just let them know if you are NOT in a rush:)"

  • "I have eaten here north of a dozen times. The service is spectacular as is the food. Good tip---check the Steppenwolf Theatre's schedule....it really clears out at showtime and you can have a romantic dinner with your sweetie. "

  • "The four of us often visit Trattoria Giannni before attending theatre in the neighborhood. It is our favorite place to eat before the theatre. The food is excellent and the wait staff is very accommodating. I have recommended this restaurant to many friends. We love this place!!"

  • "Four women dined here before theater. We didn't order drinks and I got the impression our waiter wasn't too happy. We had an hour and 1/4 to eat which was plenty. The food was very good, not great but waiter forgot one of our main dishes which we were sharing. We will go back. Excellent location and valet parking."

  • "The food at Trattoria Gianni is excellent. Saturday evening I had a special appetizer and special entrée and was very happy with both of them. Servings are generous -- my husband had a huge dish of pasta that he couldn't finish. We had theatre tickets, and one of our party was late to dinner, but our waitress still managed to get us served in time to get to the play with time to spare. My only complaint about Trattoria Gianni is that it's a bit crowded. Other diners had to squeeze past us to get to their tables, and that wasn't fun for either them or us."

  • "Enjoyable dinner venue. We had a good server who was kind about repeating ingredients for those of us on special diets. The food was well seasoned and while I would not have minded larger servings of vegetables, they were cooked perfectly. For those looking for a comfortable experience with a mid range price, Trattoria Gianni's is a great choice."

  • "This is a great old fashion Italian Restaurant. Great for a quick dinner before you run off to Steppenwolf Theater or The Royal George Theater. Takes reservations. Our waitress wasn't the best but she tried. Food came quickly which was nice if you are going to theater. Great house salads and menu selections are good. Seems they always have a neighborhood crowd there."

  • "I had heard of Gianni's for many years, and a friend recommended it for a pre-theater dinner. Four of us arrived with high hopes, but were soon disappointed. Outdoor patio was very pleasant, but that was the best thing about our dinner (other than the very tasty bread). Service was slow and unattentive. Salads were ok, but entrees were poor. I had the special risotto, with kale, broccoli and chicken. The chicken was practically non-existent - 4 or 5 little chunks that I had to hunt for. Flavor was bland. My date had the mushroom pasta and said the pasta was so al dente she couldn't chew it. Our friends both had the tagliatelle with bolognese sauce, and both of them only ate about half of their dish. None of us finished our meal. "
