  • "So the food was very good, the service was excellent. but I had this annoying light fixture above our table that needed to be turned down. I asked twice and no one cared:(("

  • "We hadn't been here for quite some time and the place was prettier, bigger, and more romantic than I remembered. They have a great menu and the food was excellent. It was a very warm and friendly place and we could actually hear each other talk on a Saturday night - rare for restaurants these days. We will definitely be coming back soon."

  • "We have not been back to Trattoria Gianni since we left Chicago. It was one of our favorite restaurants. We were pleased to find that the ambience, food and service have maintained their high quality! It was a pleasure to return."

  • "The location near the Steppenwofl was ideal for a pre-show dinner. Our server was prompt, courteous and helpful. he even arranged to have a pasta dish made to my order--and it was a fabulous meal. A really terrific neighborhood gem. Only possible improvements: a stronger cappiciuno. W large party came in during ourr meal, and included some loud and loutish patrons. No effrot to settle them down, but sometimes things happen. We would definately come here again."

  • "Everything was delicious. The only reason I gave food only 3 stars is that my linguini was not cooked and was still crunchy. However they got me a new one very quickly and it was fabulous. We will definitely be going back."

  • "I would go here again before Steppenwolf or Royal George shows. Gets a little crowded pre-show, which can be annoying if you are not with the theater crowd. Good food, interesting specials."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "I went with a group of 7 and our waiter was very attentive for the group. Our meals were all excellent- a few of us got the spinach ravioli with browned butter and my husband got the gnocchi. The star of the show was the grilled calamari- OMG it was soooo good. I would go back there again, just for that! I definitely recommend this restaurant- appetizers, wine, dinner and dessert were all excellent!"

  • "Although it is next to the theater and much of their patrons seem to come from there, I live in the area and have found this place to be a nice retreat from many of the local spots when looking for some good Italian. I usually get the nioki, it is great. They also have some really good Italian wines and the management/staff is very friendly. In the summer they have a great outdoor area, and they are always happy to see a recurring or loyal customer of the restaurant. They remembered me from only after two visits. Give it a try.*Cheers"

  • "Went for dinner before going to the theatre. Was seated immediately at the reservation time of 6:30. Excellent calamari appetizer, good soup and entres. Spinach ravioli entre was very good. The kitchen prepared a wrong risotto entre, but the waiter corrected the issue and comped the bill for the inconvenience."

  • "We stopped here for dinner before seeing a 7:30 show at the steppenwolf. We were able to valet the car out front, give the valet our leftovers to bring to the car, and pick up the car post-show. So convenient! The food was fantastic, service great and atmosphere cozy and festive."

  • "Went here because it was close to The Royal George Theater. We walked in and felt like we were part of a neighborhood. There was lots of hugging which made me think there must be regulars who eat there. Our server was so friendly and quick. The food was delicious. I had the beet salad on arugula which was fresh and tasty. My pasta, had a nice kick to it from the sausage in the dish, but was also quite tasty."

  • "This was our second time dining at Trattoria Gianni. The ambience and décor are warm and cozy. This restaurant is located close to theaters, so it provides one with an enjoyable place to eat before a show. The service is very good. The restaurant also has a valet parking garage so there is no hassle with trying to find a parking spot on the street."

  • "We went here with a group of 5 at 5:30pm before a show at the Royal George Theatre. It was empty when we first walked in because they had just opened, but they filled up within 30 minutes. It was a great Italian dinner. We went for soup, salad, appetizer, entrée, and dessert. It was quite the feast and all of it delicious. We definitely had leftovers and they were just as good the next day as well. The tiramisu was to die for, and the Gnocchi stuffed with Ricotta cheese were little pillows of heavens. Everything was just fantastic."

  • "We went with a group of six ladies before the show at the Royal George. We all enjoyed our food, I had the Gnocchi and it was perfect, the sauce was the best I have had at a restaurant, tasted just like homemade gravy. Our service was excellent, friendly and very efficient. The prices are reasonable for the food and the wine. Would definitely return."

  • "Enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere and staff...and truly authentic Italian countryside cuisine."

  • "This restaurant is an Italian dining gem. The menu is solid with a fair number of regular choices. The Daily Specials are plentiful and ask for the Special selections that didn't make it to the printed menus. The quality, preparation and presentation of the food were excellent. The Stuffed Gnocchi in Bolognese Sauce, the Italian Sausage Risotto, the Spinach Ravioli in brown butter sauce, and the Grilled Marinated Chicken were superb and worth a return trip even without a theater date. The service was first rate, and timing is perfect for a before theater dinner. The valet parking - a hidden treat if you're planning on going to one of the adjacent theaters. The valet will keep your car at no additional charge. Great place. We'll be back"

  • "We dined at Trattoria Gianni before a show at the Royal George. All four of us enjoyed our meals. I had a salad special, the Insalata Barbabielo, with red and yellow beets. It was delicious, although there were very few, very small bleu cheese crumbles. I also had a chicken breast special, which was cooked perfectly with mushrooms, artichokes, and onions. My husband had the pork chop, which looked wonderful, and our two companions had pasta. One of them ordered a dish from the menu but asked for a different sauce, and the waiter was very accommodating. Service was prompt, and we had no problem getting to the show on time. Our only complaint was the noise level -- by the time we left, we could no longer converse comfortably."

  • "Having lived in Chicago we enjoy finding new places we can return to and recommend to friends and business associates. All started quite well. Then after we recieved our drinks it took longer and longer for service....which was hard to understand since there were only 4-5 tables at this time. The slowness continued. We reminded our waiter several times we were limited on time due to a committment for a play. Towards the end , one of us ordered coffee and our check. We waited 15 minutes for the coffee ...never got it...and the owner had to deliver our check personally.Worst of all , when our wives ask the waiter as to where the coffee was , the waiter got all miffed as if "how dare we challenge anything".(didn't know this until we left."

  • "We recently went with our in-laws to an early show at the Royal George on a Saturday night. We had dinner reservations afterwards at 7 along with many other theater patrons. The restaurant was crowded but we were seated in a reasonable time. The wait staff was wonderful and the food/wine outstanding."

  • "Trattoria Gianni is a very good Italian restaurant. We always enjoy going there. It is especially great when attending a play at Steppenwolf or the Royal George Theaters. The location is perfect either before or after a performance. In the warm months, their outdoor patio is delightful."
