We were greeted promptly and seated outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. We ordered a tasty appetizer plate of flavorful olives, cheese, peppers and mushrooms. After this we expected equally flavorful meals, but found one main course bland. The linguine with shrimp and scallops mixed in a garlic olive oil sauce was spot on with the garlic. A little more garlic would have been too much for the breath to take. The spaghetti bolognese could have used more spices. Dessert was the homemade tiramisu which was a fresh enormous piece of deliciousness. We shared the dessert without difficulty as the piece was so large. At one p.m., we were alone in the dining room, but the patio seemed popular. All the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Daily specials as well as the regular menu, with fairly standard Italian fare. Appetizer of calamari was light and tender, a special version of a caprese salad was exceptional, and our main courses - we both chose a type of tagliatelle - were very flavorful. The panna cotta dessert was delicious as well. Finishing up with a strong cup of coffee, we were out the door just in time to cross the street and take our seats for the play. We went on a Friday night and were pleasantly surprised by our experience. It's close proximity to the Steppenwolf Theater area makes it an obvious choice for dinner before the theater or dessert after the theater. However, Gianni's should be considered for more than just a night at the theater. It's the perfect restaurant location if you are going to the Steppenwolf or Royal George Theater. The food is always good, as is the service. They are very aware of the time constraints of dinner before the show. WeI love this restaurant. We eat here every time we go to Steppenwolf and are never disappointed. The minestrone soup includes a range of interesting vegetables. I had veal marsala (not always on the menu, but available any time I've asked)--the veal is of high quality and the sauce is delicious. The service was great, we were seated right away, the food was outstanding, started with the caprese, cheese melted in your mouth, then came the carpaccio---it was delicious, for the main course I had the Conchiglie with rice noodles, my sister tried the dish and didn't notice the noodls were gluten free, I had to keep her fork from drifting my way, finally desert, 3 small scoops of sorbet that was delicious. On my open table reservation I said that we were celebrating a birthday. We go here before every evening performance we attend at Steppenwolf which is just across the street. We discovered Gianni's because of our attendance at the theater, but it quickly became one of our favorites.
