Diner Reviews
  • "great place to have dinner before or after a show. service is very good, food great, prices reasonable"

  • "Nice spot in the Steppenwolf area where if you tell them you have a 7:30 curtain, they make sure to take your order and serve it soon after. I don't think of Gianni as a destination unless headed for the theatre."

  • "Our reservation was honored on time, service was pretty good for the most part, but I did not appreciate being talked up into a different price bracket for the bottle of wine we were considering ordering. I know I could have said no, but who wants to be considered a "cheapskate?" The burrata was exceptional, the pork chop very mediocre, my dining companions seemed to enjoy the pasta, and the ambiance was very nice (rain was threatening or we may have opted to sit outdoors on the very enticing patio). Certainly very convenient for before or after Steppenwolf theater performances."

  • "We enjoyed a lovely pre-Steppenwolf dinner at Trattoria Gianni's recently. Excellent food, both in-door and outdoor garden tables, gracious service, and background music at a level for music lovers and conversationalists alike. The restaurant is located directly across the street from the theater and has been in operation for years. We're sorry we didn't step in the door sooner. We'll be back."

  • "We had dined here before theater several times previously....it was never outstanding, but acceptable. This time, nothing went right. Salads were slow coming...the smallest basil leaf I ever saw dressed the top of the caprice salad, one entree order was completely wrong, the more expensive salmon dish was substituted for a less expensive one ordered & couldn't be replaced in a timely manner & the obviously previously baked piece of salmon was burnt on the outside, an obvious attempt to make it looked broiled gone wrong. The by- the -glass wine serving came in a microscopic glass only half filled. We never saw the waiter after he took our order. They must have sensed something was wrong, but the comp'ed desert wine was about one teaspoon."

  • "Trattoria Gianni was the perfect fit for a dinner prior to hitting a show at Steppenwolf. The service was quick and attentive. The server asked if we were going to the theater as we were seated and the dining pace was unhurried, but clearly mindful of the clock. The food was simple and good, not tremendous. Really the right fit for the occasion."

  • "Trattoria Gianni has stood the test of time. The food has remained tasty, up-to-date and a good value for many years. The addition of an outdoor eating area is a real plus during the summer months. Although that eating area faces the street, street noise is not an issue as the sound is buffered by plantings. Another plus is that Trattoria Gianni is an dining excellent choice when attending neighborhood theaters such as Steppenwolf or Royal George. The waitstaff understands the need for restaurant patrons to be served in a timely manner. It's always a pleasure to dine at Trattoria Gianni."

  • "The service is great and we love the food. It's our favorite place in the city. The owner takes great pains to make sure that everything is perfect and that the service, and atmosphere are top notch. In the summer, there is a lovely patio so you can choose to dine inside or outside."

  • "Nice to be able to just walk across the street from a play to get dinner. Cozy little spot, nice outdoor seating, attentive staff. The beet salad was nice, but I was not able to finish it before my entree arrived. My salmon was good but the veggies were over cooked. Still. I would recommend this spot for a before or after theater experience, just let them know if you are NOT in a rush:)"

  • "I have eaten here north of a dozen times. The service is spectacular as is the food. Good tip---check the Steppenwolf Theatre's schedule....it really clears out at showtime and you can have a romantic dinner with your sweetie. "

  • "The four of us often visit Trattoria Giannni before attending theatre in the neighborhood. It is our favorite place to eat before the theatre. The food is excellent and the wait staff is very accommodating. I have recommended this restaurant to many friends. We love this place!!"

  • "Four women dined here before theater. We didn't order drinks and I got the impression our waiter wasn't too happy. We had an hour and 1/4 to eat which was plenty. The food was very good, not great but waiter forgot one of our main dishes which we were sharing. We will go back. Excellent location and valet parking."

  • "Food had little taste. Chicken marsala was never familiar with marsala. Small portions. Disappointed."

  • "The food at Trattoria Gianni is excellent. Saturday evening I had a special appetizer and special entrée and was very happy with both of them. Servings are generous -- my husband had a huge dish of pasta that he couldn't finish. We had theatre tickets, and one of our party was late to dinner, but our waitress still managed to get us served in time to get to the play with time to spare. My only complaint about Trattoria Gianni is that it's a bit crowded. Other diners had to squeeze past us to get to their tables, and that wasn't fun for either them or us."

  • "Enjoyable dinner venue. We had a good server who was kind about repeating ingredients for those of us on special diets. The food was well seasoned and while I would not have minded larger servings of vegetables, they were cooked perfectly. For those looking for a comfortable experience with a mid range price, Trattoria Gianni's is a great choice."

  • "This is a great old fashion Italian Restaurant. Great for a quick dinner before you run off to Steppenwolf Theater or The Royal George Theater. Takes reservations. Our waitress wasn't the best but she tried. Food came quickly which was nice if you are going to theater. Great house salads and menu selections are good. Seems they always have a neighborhood crowd there."

  • "I had heard of Gianni's for many years, and a friend recommended it for a pre-theater dinner. Four of us arrived with high hopes, but were soon disappointed. Outdoor patio was very pleasant, but that was the best thing about our dinner (other than the very tasty bread). Service was slow and unattentive. Salads were ok, but entrees were poor. I had the special risotto, with kale, broccoli and chicken. The chicken was practically non-existent - 4 or 5 little chunks that I had to hunt for. Flavor was bland. My date had the mushroom pasta and said the pasta was so al dente she couldn't chew it. Our friends both had the tagliatelle with bolognese sauce, and both of them only ate about half of their dish. None of us finished our meal. "

  • "Everything I have ever ordered at Trattoria Gianni has been delicious and reasonably priced. There's enough variety in the menu and daily specials to keep us coming back month after month and year after year. I try other spots i the neighborhood but always come back to Trattoria Gianni as my consistent favorite."

  • "We primarily come here because of its proximity to Steppenwolf & while they never have blown me away with either service or food, it was always acceptable, as opposed to its neighborhood competition which is either over priced, over rated, just mediocre or unsuitable. I think the menu has expended & more variety with a few new items compared too our last visit several months ago. The eggplant appetizer could have used more salt & pepper,, the entry portions were adequate in size & tasty. The cannelloni was superb. Their olive oil was really good quality as was the crusty bread."

  • "I love the food at this place, it's simple, great and very flavor-full. It's simply just great food."

  • "Trattoria Gianni is a real find. It has been consistently good for many years but changes in the menu and the lovely outdoor terrace keep the restaurant feeling very current. There's a modern vibe that's not overbearing; they don't try too hard the way some upstart restaurants do. TG's proximity to two of Chicago's finest live theaters make it the perfect place for before-theater-dining. Gianni himself is always there and always ready to accommodate his many new and regular customers. I recommend Trattoria Gianni without hesitation."

  • "Everything at Gianni's taxes just great. Veal picatta was tender with not too much sauce; angel hair pasta with spinach was a perfect complement, bruschetta started it all off (fresh and light; and terrific cannoli (filling not overly rich but with a lightly sweet taste, crispy shell) finished it off. This is my 5th time here, and I've never been disappointed. "

  • "We love Trattoria Gianni. Because there is always a big theater crowd, we usually book dinner about the time the plays begin. At that time the crowd is smaller and the wait staff is less busy. Gianni is always there and gives a warm welcome. The wait staff is very professional. The food is always excellent."

  • "The food is very good, but unfortunately we did not have good service. Our server came over and took out drink order, then never brought our drinks, a second server came by and we gave her our drink order, and she also took our dinner order. The first server came over to take our dinner order and when we explained we gave it to the other server and that we never got our drinks, she took an attitude and walked away. "

  • "Been there a few times now as I live in the neighborhood. Really good food, especially the pasta dishes, and even more especially the handmade pasta dishes. They can get extremely busy before and after Steppenwolf shows, so keep that in mind when visiting."

  • "The service was slow, the food was nothing to brag about. My wife and I have a date every Friday where we try different restaurants plus we eat out at least 3 times a week. We will never be back to this one. The sea bass was probably the worst one I have ever tasted. "

  • "So the food was very good, the service was excellent. but I had this annoying light fixture above our table that needed to be turned down. I asked twice and no one cared:(("

  • "We hadn't been here for quite some time and the place was prettier, bigger, and more romantic than I remembered. They have a great menu and the food was excellent. It was a very warm and friendly place and we could actually hear each other talk on a Saturday night - rare for restaurants these days. We will definitely be coming back soon."

  • "The location near the Steppenwofl was ideal for a pre-show dinner. Our server was prompt, courteous and helpful. he even arranged to have a pasta dish made to my order--and it was a fabulous meal. A really terrific neighborhood gem. Only possible improvements: a stronger cappiciuno. W large party came in during ourr meal, and included some loud and loutish patrons. No effrot to settle them down, but sometimes things happen. We would definately come here again."
