Diner Reviews
  • "Love it when the owner is so nice! Will look forward to going back again and again! Appreciate personalized service from the owner!"

  • "The food is prepared in a simpler gourmet style. These are undoubtedly dishes that he learned from mother or grandmother. New chefs today seem to overreach in their endeavor to be "creative"... it's refreshing to find a restaurant that delivers the right authenticity, combined with absolutely great taste, with just the right amount of complexity. Owner/chef is very nice and seems a bit awkward sometimes transitioning between server and chef. This is a small restaurant, so he can get away with that, but if it were full, he would (quite literally) have his hands full. Strongly recommended!"

  • "Marco is an excellent chef and creates Italian dishes like none other do..................have dined there many times and have NEVER had a bad meal, in fact have never had anything but an excellent meal"

  • "It was our first time to this restaurant, and were really excited to try it. The pasta dishes were outstanding, and our chicken piccata was good. The front of the house was unfriendly, and service poor. Only 2 people in front of house, one was the owner. Never had a visit from the owner, even though there are only 9 tables. Authentic Trattoria atmosphere ."

  • "Trattoria Fresco is, without a doubt, the best Italian restaurant in Marin."

  • "It was Christmas Eve, and we were only the second table seated at 6 PM. Then the restaurant started to fill up. We put our order in as quickly as possible - to no avail. We were served our entrees after every one else had been served! We requested our bill when we were served our dinners, and we still received the check 15 minutes later. The service was abysmal, the food mediocre at best. A profound disappointment all around."

  • "Trattoria Fresco is a neighborhood gem with great food, a warm and intimate environment, and an authentic Italian feel. Not only is it in the heart of Ross, but with its warm authenticity it also brings heart. I loved it!"

  • "Marco is a true auteur - It's like having your own private chef. Mille gratzie!"

  • "Perhaps the best Caesar salad dressing is combined with reasonable pasta offerings. Pasta is house made and sauces are good, lack that flavor punch of tart tomatoes. It comes with a NYC type of attitude (wouldn't prepare a chicken ala mattone one night) and a brusque approach that if you stand up to it will become a tolerable experience. Well worth the moderate price."

  • "We arrived at 6:30 since we were attending an 8:00 play on Sat. Night. The room was half full. 15 minutes after we were seated menus were dropped at our table. The menu offering did not have one item from the online menu ...and we had to motion to the waitress to get a glass of wine. We each settled for one of the mediocre pasta dishes and a dry Cesar salad . Trattoria quite simply Failed."

  • "Our French group of 7 visited Trattoria Fresco before a Ross Valley Players' performance at Marin Art & Garden Center. We were all delighted with our dinner choices. And we loved the fact that the restaurant is quiet enough so you can talk in a normal voice and hear what your dining companions are saying! Everything was terrific, and Marco is amazing (how does he look after so many people at once?). We will definitely be back, as a group and individually, with other friends. Thanks for being part of our "enchanted" evening."

  • "They seemed confused about the reservation, but had a good table so it did not matter. Very slow to refill water."

  • "THis takes me back to 'Italia' Owner presides over both the stove and the dining room He is very, very amicable All the pastas are sublime The wine list was fair pricing and even had some interesting Italian wines Americans that are used to Applebees wont be impressed, but having lived in Italy in my youth, this is the real deal Bon Appetito"

  • "We have been to this restaurant before. Usually it is pretty quiet. This night was busy and unfortunately the owner is the waiter, busboy, cook and dishwasher...."
    Dined on 3/5/2013
  • "Has noted by other reviewers, the place is quite busy/hectic due to the small mom and pop feel of the place. The staff does work hard and the food quality makes up for any issues. Great food, just expect to sit down and enjoy the evening after all this isn't fast food!"

  • "Our meal was delicious!! Fantastic ravioli with lobster...almost licked the plate. We shared the food and everything we had was excellent. Our waitress also made a good suggestion for the wine to go with our meal."

  • "Just the right place for a good, moderately priced meal."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day, as I had heard that it was a good spot for romantic meal. The space is not conducive to romance, and the service was the awful - salad plates were not cleared before entrees arrived, water & wine glasses were never refilled, we had to ask for utensils to eat dinner, and we had to ask for dessert and coffee after looking at our empty plates for 15 minutes! That being said... the food was amazing. I had a parchment paper cooked halibut that moist and flavorful. She ordered a risotto that had amazing flavor and great texture. After we convinced the server to let us order dessert, that was great, too! With proper training for the servers, this place can be #1 in Marin!"

  • "Outstanding food, good service, very passionate owner (kind of wacky). A quirky place where you might come away with a great story."

  • "Marco has a gem of a neighborhood restaurant. We've been coming for 12 years and it is so consistent. It is a small intimate space and you can actually talk with your friends across the table and hear yourselves! The portions are small, which I happen to appreciate, and the price a tad high for the quantity as compared to other Italian local restaurants. But we love how fresh everything is!"

  • "My wife and I were in visiting our kids who live in the area. My daughter had recommended we go and found it to be as close to Italy without being there. How the owner runs a one man shop every nite is beyond me. Lamb was superb, pasta al dente with perfect portion size. We look forward to going back."

  • "Excellent food, very good menu. A bit stressful to see Marco, the owner, doing most of the things and jumping from table to table. also not a place where to stay more than 8:30 PM on a Saturday evening. good for early dinner. The restaurant was cold, a little bit of heating would not be bad."

  • "A great local place, none of the usual Ross snootery. Good italian, simply prepared, nice Italian wine list. I will be back!"

  • "Nice neighborhood restaurant. Small menu, but quality ingredients prepared nicely and very tasty."

  • "Food was delicious: pasta cooked perfectly and masterfully seasoned. Service was mediocre, but that's what I'd been told to expect and I'm fine with trading this off for great food. This was our first time at this restaurant so I can't say whether this (Sunday) night was an aberration, but the place was exceedingly noisy - we were seated next to a group of 8 who were having a wonderful time laughing and talking - not yelling or screaming - yet the noise literally bounced off the walls and seriously detracted from the ambiance. That saif, we'll go back for the food, which is the closest I've tasted to the Tuscan food I grew accustomed to when I lived in Italy."

  • "Fantastic Dinner. My wife and I ate here last Wednesday evening for the first time. We shared the Arugula salad, tomato and pesto sauce pizza and the Rusticate pasta dish with shrimp and sausage. One of the tastiest Italian dinners we have had. Atmosphere is very nice on the Ross square. We will be back. This is a must try local restaurant."

  • "It's a wonderful, low-key gem with house made pasta. It was perfect for us to have dinner with food savvy friends we rarely get to see."

  • "Wonderful northern Italian food in an intimate setting across from the Ross Commons, with a talented, friendly chef."

  • "Great low key neighborhood spot. Good food and menu. Owner is a funny Italian with a bit of an edge. Easy place to slide in, have a nice inexpensive glass of vino and enjoy a lovely meal. Love their interpretation on a classic Caesar--light and refreshing with a zing of lemon."

  • "I happened to be in Ross for business and stumbled upon this gem a month ago. The food was so good that we have been back two more times with friends. The pasta is the best I've had outside Of Italy. The Bottarga with tuna roe is outstanding, as is the pasta with an orange sauce. Sounded different, so we tried it and now it's my husband's favorite. Bruschetta is amazing too. A must try!"

  • "The best homemade pasta in Marin County. We like it so much that I have made it my goal to work my way through the entire pasta list"
    Dined on 6/7/2012
  • "One of the most authentic, delicious, and charming food experiences I've had lately. The owner/chef/waiter is completely immersed in his creation and our enjoyment. He engages lightly when invited, steps back if he's not. This is a lovely place I'll go to again and again."

  • "Very modest food offerings ... nothing to write home about."

  • "This two-man operation is unconventional (our waiter was in jeans and a baseball cap), but the food is delicious. The mushroom soup was perfect, creamy and tasty. We had a pasta dish and lamb - both presented nicely. We'll be back."

  • "The food and ambiance were excellent, my only concern was the noise level. It was difficault to carry on a conversation."
    Dined on 2/14/2012
  • "Our experience mirrored previous reviews, poor service. We were hardly even welcomed into the restaurant even though it was a special occasion (valentine's day). I don't think either of the servers smiled once while we there. It took 20 min. after seating us to offer us something to drink. Food selection was minimal, but everything was good. Environment did not feel anywhere near as cozy as you would expect, and we hoped for, from a restaurant with 10 tables. It's too bad, we were looking for a new place to frequent in the area."
    Dined on 2/14/2012
  • "The food was very good all around. Prices were reasonable. There was only one wait person so the service was a bit slow but not terrible. Pastas are their specialties and it shows. We had 4 different pastas and everyone was happy. We'll be back."

  • "delicious food but service very uneven. And at those prices, to be rationed bread is inexcusable"
    Dined on 12/9/2011
  • "Small(8-10 tables) and quaint traditional trattoria. Staff is 1 waiter and 1 cook. We enjoyed the relaxed and informal atmosphere, and good, but not overbearing service. If you need constant attention and fussed over, not the place for you. Noise was reasonable/comfortable give small size of dining area. Not candlelight quiet, but not bothersome either. Appetizers and main courses were excellent, and cook stopped by to check. Desert was good, but not a highlight. We're looking forward to dining here again."
