Diner Reviews
  • "A fantastic little restaurant! This place was recommended by one of the locals, and did not disappoint. Our wait staff was extremely efficient and well organized. My dinner: Ahi Tuna & Avocado Tartar, followed by potato & broccoli soup, followed by the duck breast special, was outstanding. Each dish was fragrant, and extremely well presented. All of the food was delicious. The only drawback was that this restaurant is quite packed, and with a full seating, the noise level was deafening. I loved the food, but the noise became unbearable. This however is a sign of the popularity of the spot, and enjoyment of its clientele."

  • "Great spot but Entree arrived less than 5 minutes after entrees were cleared. Will order when we want meals delivered next time. Shame is such a nice place to have to resort to this strategy."

  • "This restaurant may be a victim of expectations....we just expected more from an Umberto restaurant--and for the price. The best words to describe this restaurant are "mediocre" and "old school". We dined at Il Caminetto a week prior and we emjoyed ourselves immensely there (it had a much more innovative menu and it's decor and ambiance much more lush and relaxing). At Trattoria, we had a ceasar salad, 2 pastas(both pastas were slightly undercooked asthe pasta still was crunchy/starchy and hadn't reached the silky al dente point--same with side of risotto); the braised beef dish (osso bucco? shin? not memorable...) was tender but lacked flavour, and tiramisu felt like it came straight from the fridge and was very cold."

  • "A nice Italian restaurant, away from the main stroll. It was quite and a nice place to have a relaxing meal. I would go there again!"

  • "We've eaten here several times, and it is always good. The food is dependably very good, and there is a fun, happy atmosphere. But it is getting to be very expensive, even by Whistler standards. We'll have to leave the kids at home next time."

  • "I come here each time I go to Whistler. The service is great. Walter is an icon (manager). They made my pasta the way I wanted it, and the server said she loves it that way, as well. The dessert is the best in the Village. Truly. You must go here."

  • "It was a zoo! Spring break is really not the time to try and do dinner at a nice restaurant in Whistler. However, with an 8:30 reservation, I thought we'd be fine. Everyone was slow to dine so our table wasn't ready. The Maitre'd was excellent and got a window table as soon as he could so the noise level was reduced to 3 sides! Nonetheless, the service from Jay was outstanding, the food as great as ever and we had a lovely bottle of wine. Jay even had the kitchen whip up a special sauce for the gnocci, much to my companion's delight. I'd highly recommend it!"

  • "Everything about our experience dining at Trattoria di Umberto was splendid. The staff from the coat check woman to the manager was very attentive. The wine, appetizers and main dishes were all very tasty. One can't go wrong dining there."

  • "It had been over 5 years since we had dined at Umberto. We enjoyed our previous meals there and usually made it our final meal before heading home after a week of skiing. We wondered if the place had changed or if we should select another option. We were happy we stuck with tradition. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Wonderful aroma coming from the bustling kitchen. Great recommendation for a bottle of wine within our price point. We had the tuna appetizer and soup to start off our meal, followed by NY steak and the sausage penne pasta. The food in this ski resort town in not inexpensive, but you don't mind paying when you can relax and enjoy your meal. The restaurant is perfect for families with older children and groups dining out."

  • "We had a wonderful time kick starting birthday weekend celebration with friends over great food and cocktails. Food was outstanding and our server was fantastic! We had a really enjoyable time! The fillet was to die for... Melt in your mouth!! The other tasty fish was the sea bass that 2 friends had and kept raving about with each bite! Their pink grapefruit martini...YUM!"

  • "With a huge selection of places to eat in whistler many of which were recommended by friends this was a shot in the dark and well worth it. Jay, our server, could not have been more welcoming or friendly and the food was great. We had beef carpaccio and warm cambozola to start followed by scallops with pea risotto and linguine alla vongole for main courses. They were delicious! We have subsequently cancelled our reservation to return to Barefoot to take family to the trattoria instead. It is a must in Whistler!"

  • "We had dinner here the night before Valentine's day, the restaurant was packed. The appetizers were the best part, an ahi appetizer and a baked cheese with crostini. Our waiter was inexperienced and it took a long time to get service throughout the meal. We ordered a second bottle of wine to have with our entrees, he brought it out to the table as we were finishing our main dishes. All the entrees were just okay, we tried the risotto with scallops (they were overcooked), the lasagna, the pesto pasta and the Ossobuco. The noise level around us made it really difficult to carry on a conversation. It's expensive for what it has to offer...especially the main dishes."

  • "one of my "go-to" lunch spots in Whistler Village. Love to ski down, walk right in for a late lunch (they stop serving lunch at 2:30) after a great day on the hill. super nice people; great food and service, in a really nice and well lit dining room, reminiscent of an Italian Trattoria. Love the Tratt!"

  • "As usual, the food and the service was fantastic! We love this place and they are very patient with a large group with young kids. Our server was very accommodating and friendly. We come here every time we are in Whistler and they have never failed us! We were seated and served promptly. The food was fantastic! The Venison rack was out of this world and I couldn’t believe the flavor and tenderness. The Duck was seasoned well and very moist. The pasta dishes were excellent and cooked to perfection. We can always count on this place!"

  • "Great service, food and atmosphere - was a wonderful dinner. The only disappointment we had was that we had called ahead of time to see if we could bring wine into the restaurant and pay a corking fee. I made a mistake in not asking what the fee was but I've never had to pay more than $20 per bottle. We had 3 bottles we brought in for a special occasion and were charged $105.00 for corking fees - absolutely ridiculous on top of an expensive meal. We have dined here for many years and have brought groups of family and friends. We had a group of 8 and spared no expense on appetizers, meals, and desserts - my husband and I felt the corkage fees could have been discounted in some way. This was a disappointing end to a great evening."

  • "Fun, loud and busy Italian restaurant with a great vibe. Dinner was good (but not great). The appetizers (carpaccio, prosciutto) and the pasta dishes (lasagne, tortellini) were all quite good but we agreed that we've had better dishes elsewhere."

  • "Have Travelled to most of the major ski resorts in N.America. Eaten in all the best restaurants. Know all of the Whistler food scene inside out Umberto's Trattoria is the best of all. If you want to try the next best also, it's Umberto's Camminetto also in Whistler"

  • "The veal marsala and salmon were just average. Almost underflavored. Manicotti and shrimp were a bit better. Growing up Italian I know what good Italian food is - this was not it! Save your money and go elsewhere."

  • "I thought I had booked the OTHER Umberto's so was pleasantly surprised by the decor and ambience and food at the little sister trattoria around the corner. Service was polished and attentive, and the room was elegant without being stuffy. My scallop risotto was perfect and there were grunts of approval from my menfolk at both the " deliciously tender" roast chicken and the steak. We'd go back again next time we are in Whistler."

  • "Tucked away in an older building off of the main drag, this place is hard to find if you've never been before. Once inside, the delicious smells, din of the kitchen, and lively conversations strike just the right chord. A daunting wine list and amazing Italian food served in ample portions. Simply the best Italian you'll find outside of Italy. Cheers!"

  • "We had a group of 10 during an annual conference where they are booked for 3 days straight and went for a late dinner. Service was great as is the venue. On the food I had a superb seafood Linguine in tomato which I could not have been happier with, and followed it up with the Ossobuco, which was also hugely satisfying. The one standout was the saffron risotto, which was not seasoned and sent back, but I only deducted one star on the food for that, which I believe is appropriate. In their defense the waitress did tell me after that the head chef left 2 days prior, but the dishwasher could have tasted this and seen the problem. I am looking forward to going back to see how they evolve this one."

  • "Had a very good dinner here for 6 people while on a ski trip. Located directly across from our hotel. Service was very good and overall our food was great....though one pasta dish was described as being a little overcooked."

  • "We have been visiting the Trattoria for over 15 years and have never been dissapointed. We needed to make a last minute change in time and were accomodated easily. And all meals were delicious, as usual. Highly recommended."

  • "We've dined at several of Umberto's restaurants over the years, but Trattoria seems to have gone downhill over the past few years. The menu on the website is outdated. It's almost too loud to hear anyone speak. Our server was actually very good, although it took 45 minutes to take our order and nearly another hour for the food to arrive. The caesar salad was very good. The tomatoes in the tomato//mozzarella salad were anemic and tasteless; the "fresh" mozzarella was rubbery and bland. The risotto with scallops tasted like bland mashed potatoes. On the whole, the food was mediocre. The restaurant continues to be lively and busy, but they seem to be resting on their laurels from the past."

  • "My husband and I have been coming to Whistler for years but hadn't tried this restaurant so we decided to go there due to other people's recommendations. The ambiance and food were very nice however I was shocked at the prices. There was a spinach salad on the menu for $21.95! There wasn't a salad cheaper than $14 and these weren't entree salads. Overall our food bill came to $200 which just seems a little pricey considering it's Italian food. I have no problem paying for an expensive dinner but this just seemed too high for what we got."

  • "We have eaten here many times and have not been super impressed with the servers and this last time proved that the service is very poor. The waiter was not friendly and took plates away without asking. He kept giving a look like we are staying too long. For 4 adult and two children we paid over $300 and expected better service than that. Will never go there again!"

  • "We dined here for what must be the busiest time of year for the area, January 2nd, 2014. The management did a great job moving things along and produced a great meal for our family of 4. We will keep this place on our recommended list."

  • "Having been here for dinner we had couple of hours at lunchtime on our last day so managed to get a table. Staff all remembered us from our first visit and the set lunch menu was excellent. Carpaccio of beef good and veal in breadcrumbs with spaghetti also very good. Nice bottle of local wine. Good service and food."

  • "Umberto is a good Italian restaurant that served a really nice veal chop. The wine list is equally appealing but given the choice I would go to Quattro."
