A word from Trattoria Dell'Arte
Across from Carnegie Hall, Trattoria Dell’Arte features the largest antipasto bar in New York, a sprawling selection of seafood and vegetable specialties perfect for parties of all sizes. Designed after a Tuscan artist’s studio, the rooms include half-finished paintings, oversized sculptures of fragmented body parts, a gallery of Italian noses, a wine cellar dining room, and candle-filled private rooms.

The menu focuses on northern Italian specialties such as the steak Florentine, double veal chop, seafood specialties of the Mediterranean, and unforgettable desserts.

On the recommendation of a friend, we went for a late supper after a show. It wasn't crowded at that hour. The service was pleasant and professional. The food was excellent. 3 of us had pasta and one had fish. all of which were delicious. The tagliolini al forno was especially good.

This friendly, lovely restaurant never disappoints. From the warm greeting to the delectable antipasto bar to the on the house flute of prosecco, this restaurant is the definition of understated elegance. It lacks pretension, but it delivers on high quality and well prepared food. The service is impeccable and the freshly baked cookies that are passed around are a delightful treat.

Buffalo mozzarella was good as well as the prosciutto. The filet (large) was very flavorful but I asked for it medium but they made it almost fully well-done. Rosemary potatoes were good but prepared dry and the strak wasn't that juicy so I was mostly parched throughout. For 222 bucks for 2 with 1 drink, I expected better. Should have had pasta.

We had booked on Opentable, but it was obvious reservations weren't honored. They were very friendly though, handing out Prosecco and asking us to wait 10-20 minutes. The meat and fish dishes were better than the pasta. The antipasti table was fabulous. Good desserts. We had a nice time in a very buzzy restaurant.

As long as you don't mind shouting, this place has great food and service. Try not to sit in a booth, unless you don't mind getting bumped back and forth by the animated conversationalist behind you. Fun place and vibrant atmosphere, but not your quiet, romantic anniversary setting.

I go to Trattoria dell'Arte for the antipasto bar. It's classic and delicious. The service is extremely friendly -- staff and servers almost over-the-top in their familiarity and warmth to even this occasional traveler to New York: "Weren't you sitting over there the last time you were here?" "Good guess, you had a 50/50 shot, but no. I've only been here twice before, and several months ago at that. You couldn't possibly really remember me." But it was an amusing con. I can't wait to go back for Cannellini and Kale, Fried Artichokes, Stuffed Artichokes, Salumi . . . Entrees are Italian Cucina at its best.

The restaurant is right across from Carnegie Hall, in a great location. The place was jam-packed for dinner on a Monday night. The host and the servers were friendly. A wide selection to choose from for food and wine. And especially good options for non-meat eaters with a great veggie antipasto bar to choose from (as well as seafood options). Even in NYC, I found a little sticker shock. Ordered a nice half bottle of red for $50. And the three choice veggie appetizer was in the 20s. We stuck to the wine and two antipasto first courses to share of veggie and a seafood. That was still $120 with tip. But I could see dining there if I was going to a concert and/or $$ was no object--there is something to be said for good service, for sure.

Myself and my wife had dinner here on Wednesday, September 10th 2014. My wife had a crab dish which she was delighted with. I had a veal dish 'Milanese Veal?' which was about $50 and was appalling. Imagine several slices of veal dipped in bread crumbs, overcooked in a frying pan and finished off with clump of Argula. It was dry, tasteless and unimaginatively dressed. I would have walked out only that my wife enjoyed her crab so much

Overly salted food, but the worst part was the bait and switch. A glass of Riesling was ordered, a glass was brought, "try it" said the waitress, "is it okay?" "Yes" was the reply. "Well, it isn't Riesling, we're out of it." Not the way to treat a diner. Hosts too chummy. "Are you local or from a far away place?" was the greeting. Obviously, locals are not valued. We won't return.

The food here is delicious and the antipasti is superb, but the staff makes the dining experience here really special. Richard, the manager and his staff are very good at what they do and most attentive to the needs of their clients. We ate her three times within a short time frame and felt we were going back to a warm and familiar place. Try the soft shell crabs if they are in season, their famous lasagna and choose among their wonderful cold antipasti offerings. The menu is extensive and the wines carefully selected. You will not have just another anonymous dining experience here.

Went with a group of 7 while visiting in NYC. Those group ordered fish, beef, chicken, liver, pasta and vegetables, as well as shared antepasto. All were outstanding. Wine list was more than sufficient, with many reasonably priced selections Atmosphere and service were all outstanding. Exactly what is to be expected from a classic, traditional NY restaurant. We would return any time we visiting the city. Atmosphere was fun, not at all stuffy.

Booked this at the last minute on a Sunday night... wasn't expecting much, especially given the touristy neighborhood around Carnegie Hall. Started with the house specialty of Roman/Jewish-style artichokes which were great- crispy and delicious. Had the Tagiolini al Forno and the soft-shell crab special, and both were delicious. Enjoyed a great Gaja Promis with dinner, which was a reasonable $100. But the kicker was the special service at the end- when we declined dessert, the waiter brought a few squares of a great dark chocolate bark, perfect. Costs next to nothing, but makes a lasting impression. We hadn't expected much from this restaurant, but they delivered nicely. PS, don't dress or act like a tourist, but any New Yorker knows that.

Now I know why the menus online do not show prices. You could have a spectacular meal elsewhere at these prices. Pasta's run in the $30's and it's all up from there, for rather average Italian food. Go on expense account or someone else's treat. Staff is very nice, but at these prices I would not return; this is NYC, too many better alternatives.

Surprising only becausse the restaurant is across the street from Carnegie Hall, so there are lots of tourists, which can have a negative effect. But here, we had a long, leisurely, late lunch, trying lots of antipasti. Each was wonderful -special kudos on the mushrooms! I also has continuous hours, which is great if you want to eat a late lunch, or a late dinner. Highly recommended.

Went for pre=theatre lunch on a Saturday in August. The place was noticeably not as crowded or noisy as I expected. Two small salads and splitting a pizza was perfect for the two of us. We had a reservation for 9.30pm, and the place was still vibrant, loud and very "Italian"! The décor and atmosphere are very good, but loud and if you had a romantic tête-à-tête in mind, this is not the place for it. Instead, you would take your family or best friends here and you'll have a great time! The service is friendly, which suits the place, not too stiff but very correct and quick. We had a very nice waiter. The food was really good. The pizza's are great: thin but full of flavor. My chicken parmiggiano was really excellent, but the portion is rather big so I couldn't finish it and regretted it the next day ;-). Great Italian food in a great place!
