A word from Trattoria Dell'Arte
Across from Carnegie Hall, Trattoria Dell’Arte features the largest antipasto bar in New York, a sprawling selection of seafood and vegetable specialties perfect for parties of all sizes. Designed after a Tuscan artist’s studio, the rooms include half-finished paintings, oversized sculptures of fragmented body parts, a gallery of Italian noses, a wine cellar dining room, and candle-filled private rooms.

The menu focuses on northern Italian specialties such as the steak Florentine, double veal chop, seafood specialties of the Mediterranean, and unforgettable desserts.

  • A surprise

Booked this at the last minute on a Sunday night... wasn't expecting much, especially given the touristy neighborhood around Carnegie Hall. Started with the house specialty of Roman/Jewish-style artichokes which were great- crispy and delicious. Had the Tagiolini al Forno and the soft-shell crab special, and both were delicious. Enjoyed a great Gaja Promis with dinner, which was a reasonable $100. But the kicker was the special service at the end- when we declined dessert, the waiter brought a few squares of a great dark chocolate bark, perfect. Costs next to nothing, but makes a lasting impression. We hadn't expected much from this restaurant, but they delivered nicely. PS, don't dress or act like a tourist, but any New Yorker knows that.

We expected a more adult atmosphere where the ambiance and setting would be more quiet and peaceful. Instead it was very loud, crowded and not to our liking. The food was ok, but nothing to write home about.

Our group loved Trattoria Dell'Arte! We had a lovely welcome compete with complimentary champagne. They were most accommodating with respect to our seating preference. The service was outstanding and all of the food was delicious! Plus they got us in and out in time to make it to the theater. We would definitely go back and recommendation it to our friends.

Surprising only becausse the restaurant is across the street from Carnegie Hall, so there are lots of tourists, which can have a negative effect. But here, we had a long, leisurely, late lunch, trying lots of antipasti. Each was wonderful -special kudos on the mushrooms! I also has continuous hours, which is great if you want to eat a late lunch, or a late dinner. Highly recommended.

Went for pre=theatre lunch on a Saturday in August. The place was noticeably not as crowded or noisy as I expected. Two small salads and splitting a pizza was perfect for the two of us. Desserts looked great, but we didn't have room. Ten-minute walk to our theater matinee. Would certainly go back.

First Class Service. Casual, but elegant and lively ambiance. Carbonara (with pancetta and a fried egg on top) is truly exceptional as is the Escalope Milanese. Can't wait to work through more of the menu on future visits to the City. Add great company and it's a perfect night.

After a 6 hour drive into NYC, this restaurant was our favorite of the whole weekend. Food was great and the service was incredible. The waiter was happy to accommodate our kids (who only like penne in butter sauce) and was very fun and pleasant. Would definitely go back.

The welcome we get when we walk in the door is enough reason to go back -- everyone makes you feel as though you are someone. The food is excellent. Our server went out of his way, and in a polite way, to tell us that the selections we made might be too much food for just two. That alone is unusual. Very friendly and very professional.

The place is always packed so conversation is difficult. Very, very noisy. Food is good and dependable, but not out of the ordinary. If going to Carnegie Hall, it's a good choice, but there are many better and more reasonable Italian restaurants in the area and the City.

I think their selection of appetizers has gotten smaller. Although it had fried baby artichokes (judaica), it was somewhat disappointing. other appetizers, pizza and veal Milanese, however, were good. Getting very pricey - $200 for that (veal - $50)

I've eaten here many times over many years. It used to be sensational, then merely very good, but lately, the past three years, it's been mediocre in every way, especially the attitude of the maitre d'. Reservations were not honored, and it was a mess. VOILA !!!!! New maitre d', new wait staff, and I don't know what's going on in the kitchen, but the food was terrific. This maitre d', whose name I do not know but he is a well dressed handsome man, perhaps 5' 7", dark hair, could not have been nicer or more accomodating, and our wait person was the best, a young lady not only capable but with a great sense of humor. They are now back on my A list, and I only live a half block away, so I will be in there frequently.

We added a note in our reservation that we were celebrating a 25th and 35th wedding anniversary so we asked for a quiet part of the restaurant. There were 8 of us. They have a private wine tasting room that was not reserved that night so we were able to have our celebration in there. It was fabulous. Whenever we visit NY we make a point of going to Trattoria dell Arte because the service is unmatched and the entire experience is never disappointing.
