  • "We have enjoyed this neighborhood gem for over 20 years. You must have the roasted pepper appetizer!"

  • "Had the linguini with clam sauce and it was amazing. My friend had chicken Parmesan with a side of meatball and I tasted hers and couldn't stop eating it! It was a great find and I will recommend it to anyone in the San Francisco area!"

  • "I started coming to Trattoria Contadina 30 years ago when my wife and I lived in SF - it was one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants. I now travel to SF once a month and regularly come back for great Italian food. When by myself, I enjoy sitting at the bar ."

  • "We had reservations for 6, but kept adding people through the dinner. By the time we finished we had 10 people - and the staff was incredibly accommodating. Food was fantastic. . . just off the beaten path south of Columbus in North Beach."

  • "This restaurant gets lots of great reviews, but not always. It's actually pretty good and I recommend you try it. A little bit off the strip and not totally touristy. Just set the expectations correctly. Think Italian the way the Italian transplants to American have done it since they came here. This is not upscale fare, and not a pure regional Italian cuisine. It's a mix. It's hearty, unpretentious and pretty darn tasty."

  • "One of my favorite NB haunts. We get the Gnocchi as an appetizer or First Course to share. The specials of the day are always a great choice."

  • "After a little bit of "Italian" at BBB, we enjoyed a delightful dinner at this always-wonderful neighborhood gem. When I take my out-of-town guests to BBB, I always like to give them a taste of San Francisco, and Trattoria Contadina is it!! We shared the Mista salad, and enjoyed the melanzane and cheese ravs respectively (we are vegetarians). For dessert we shared a VERY generous 3-scoop serving of the blackberry cabernet sorbet ... yum!! Our welcome was warm, the service was friendly and efficient...just as I remember it over the last 25 years that I've dined here."

  • "Having been going to Contadina for over 25 years. Family owned, always good service and excellent food. EVERY time we are in SF we make sure we go here. Last week, I ordered a dessert, Mocha Fango, that was just so delicious! A must have for those of us that love chocolate. I usually don't order dessert at restaurants because they sound better on menu that they really are. Mocha Fango was not one of these desserts! So glad I ordered. If you are looking for fancy restaurant in SF, this may not be your spot, but if you want fabulous Italian in charming, cozy, you have found heaven!"

  • "The food here is good, but not great. We had not been back for several years and I remember it being better. The appetizers were excellent but the main dishes were nothing special. The waiter was efficient and friendly (Rolando?) but the noise level is extreme and there is a feel that you are dining too close to others."

  • "Awesome today as it was 20 years ago! The service and attention to detail was superb!! Still romantic and family/child friendly!"

  • "I anticipated this place to be phenomenal based on yelp reviews and it wasn't. the food was average to good, service was good. exactly a three star restaurant, nothing more. I won't be returning, not because of a bad experience per se but because I know I can get better food elsewhere."

  • "I found this place after reading fantastic Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed! Delightful atmosphere, great service, amazing classic Italian food. We will be heading back here for sure!"

  • "This was our first visit to Trattoria Contadina, and we'll definitely go back for the saltimbocca. That dish was outstanding, as was everything else. Bruschetta was fresh and tasty, with just the right amount of garlic and basil. Great choices in Italian wines capped off a pleasurable dining experience."

  • "We cane in from out of town and was referred to Trattoria Contadina. Turns out the owners were the bartender and the hostess. Very nice people. Food was great and portion size was large. What a great find, neighborhood small italian and while it was a little noisy, it only added to the local feel and coziness."

  • "Trattoria Contadina is a find! We met there with visitors from London. I was hoping to find an Italian place with old North Beach feel without being just a tourist hub. This was it! Really good, but not pretentious, food & service. Like others have said, gnocchi with tomato cream sauce was like eating at mama's kitchen! Other pasta and main dishes were all liked. Green salad was dressed lightly, was fresh, and nice. Mozzarella and tomato appetizer was refreshing. Cozy ambiance, nice bar with good drinks, and decent beer and wine options. Go and enjoy!"

  • "I had discovered this restaurant several years ago and have always wanted to come back I finally made it and I am so glad I did the food was so good and service was excellent I would highly recommend coming to this restaurant it's a great little Italian gem for the north beach neighborhood. The Rockfish Piccata and the Cabernet sorbet were both really really yummy"

  • "I believe this is the oldest restaurant in SF. It is a small little place along the mason trolley line. Nice little place that has great food!"

  • "Great vibe, great food. I enjoyed visiting this neighborhood gem on my recent trip to San Francisco. It's located right at a Powell Mason cable car stop so it's incredible convenient. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. It was the perfect mix of foodie hotspot and neighborhood friendliness."

  • "We chose Trattoria Contadina for its proximity to Beach Blanket Babylon and because reviews on Trip Advisor & Yelp were very strong. It was a disappointment. With the exception of my sea bass piccatta -which was excellent - the food all felt like it had been prepped far too long before serving. The tomatoes on the bruschetta were still so cold from storage that they were almost frozen and the bread underneath had clearly been grilled/toasted hours before serving. The veal saltimbocca was flat and the two desserts - tiramisu & cheesecake had also spent too much time in the walk-in. This was North Beach Italian on autopilot - stale & uninspired - which is okay, but we had expected more given the reviews."

  • "This was a nice little restaurant. It was a bit expensive but the food was delicious. The wine list was extensive and the menu is mostly in Italian. A nice place for a quiet dinner. I would recommend that you make reservations since the place is kind of small."

  • "I have been going there for since being introduced to it in the 80's by a friend. While it is small, it avoids feeling too crowded except for an occasional crunch at the door. The food is always terrific, and may be getting better. Our last meal two days ago may have been the best yet. Friendly service and great food. Just great."

  • "We went to Trattoria Contadina just before the show at Beach Blanket Babylon. The atmosphere was warm, friendly. The service was perfect , and the pasta excellent. Great wine list . We chose the Valpolicella and ...hmmm, had to order a second bottle (oh well, we were 7 !).Not to talk about the ice cream, yummm. Great great great : I will return to this little gem (far from the Columbus pizzeria's) . Loved it."

  • "New to neighborhood and thought what a great place............unfortunately they placed us in the worst seat in the house ...next to the water and silver ware station. What a drag even after I mentioned it!"

  • "Good food. The tables are a little too close to each other - and the noise level is beyond energetic."

  • "Have been dining at Trattoria Contadina for years -- love the food, love the service, love the ambience, and a perfect location on the cable car line. Great North Beach Italian through and through."

  • "We dine here a lot because the quality never changes. Food is excellent and wine choices are adequate. After dinner coffee drink to totara is to die for. We always bring an out of town guest here to show them the real "Little Italy" instead of the touristy North Beach. Ambience can easily be romantic."

  • "Put TC on a 5 year hold and just returned having loved the energy and atmosphere. TC is now under a life time ban. Food is uninspiring, bland and not even up to par with Italian chains. So sad."

  • "The vibe is exactly what you'd want from a North Beach family owned Italian restaurant - slightly crowded, good vibe, good lighting. It may have been our waiters first day, but he didn't seem to know what a gin and tonic was and couldn't enter the drink order without checking back with us and the bartender. He was super nice and friendly, but not the least bit helpful with the menu. The timeliness of everything but the drink order was fine. The food was disappointing. Veal Parm was tough and tasted like a regular cutlet vs. real veal. The red sauce on the Spag and Meatballs was not zesty and disappointed, as did the meatballs. Bread was great. Won't go back."

  • "Will be returning to this place without a doubt. The food was incredible and the ambiance really set the mood for the evening. It's a romantic setting along the cable car line that just feels like an italian place should."

  • "We returned to Trattoria Contadina last Sunday night after a couple year hiatus. When we arrived, our party of 3 was seated upstairs which really lacked in ambiance. After ordering dinner, we were given a plate with bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The bread was cold, but not bad tasting. I ordered a glass of red wine which was not good. Our dinner include the Fruiti de Mare and a kids pasta and meatballs. The Fruiti de Mare had a heavy red sauce that did not taste homemade or fresh. The seafood also did not taste fresh. The restaurant is darling sitting on the corner of Mason, but unfortunately, we can no longer recommend the food."

  • "I have been here several times and always save a spot on my San Francisco schedule for CT. This time the food was not up to par. Not sure I will be back."

  • "Had Valentine's dinner here. Everything was perfect!! Small, but warm and beautifully lit. The food was incredible. We had the roasted & stuffed pepper as an appetizer..., fabulous. We each had the salad w/the beets & goat cheese. The greens were so fresh, the goat cheese so flavorful & creamy, and the vinaigrette flavorful, but light. We shared a pasta entree (they are large enough to share) called the Carelisimo...., I can't remember all the ingredients, but I know everyone around us was ordering it also because it is so good. Just enough time in between each course to relax, chat & appreciate the food, but not too much time. Service was exceptional ( our waiter, Jesus, was perfect). Loud due to smallness, but still intimate."
