Trattoria ContadinaExcellent FoodI was pleasantly surprised at this little trattoria. The service was excellent and the pasta was fresh and al dente. I loved the burrata, meat balls, Carlesimo pasta. Servings are generous and prices are very reasonable . I've been to many fine dining restaurants and this can compare to those. It's all about the food here. If you want an excellent Italian neighborhood restaurant that consistently delivers quality and flavorful food, this is the place . We always stay at Union Square hotels and take the cable car which drops us off right at the restaurant . The food is incredible, definitely try the mushrooms, absolutely amazing.
Because it's so small, before you're even in from the cold, you are being greeted. If there's more than one party ahead of you, there's not going to be any room at the bar, so don't be early for your reservation. This is the pasta you come to Italy for, and find it in the small, intimate, unshiny place on the corner of Mason and Union, NOT in the thick of the buses and business, but a bit up the block and quieter, sweeter. Go there to feel like you are in another country. The food is traditional genuine Italian, with delicious pasta, veal and fish and rich sauces. The service is very pleasant, though slow on crowded occasions like Mothers Day. The tables are very close together, making things quite noisy. The prices are reasonable for such good food. Our experiences here have all been happy ones, and it is a great place for birthday dinners or other occasions. The only little blip we had was the wait between the delicious beet salad and the entree, but the place was packed. All the employees were friendly and had smiles on their faces.
