Diner Reviews
  • "We got there a bit early... The bar and restaurant were very busy, some kind of singles event. They could not seat us right away, which gave us an opportunity to try the bar! Despite being very busy, bartenders were very fast and nice, both of us liked our drinks and appreciated the live Hawaiian music. When it came time for our reservation, they seated us promptly at a very nice table. Waiter was there with tasty nutty crackers, explained the specials, and allowed us to settle in. Appetizer was delicious chicken lettuce wraps and spicey 1944 Mai Tai. We ordered steak filet and volcano shrimp- outstanding! Nice portions! For dessert, the crème brûlée was bland, pretty disappointing as I expect dessert to be the meal's coup de grâce."

  • "My wife and I have been to Trader Vics multiple times and it never disappoints! Great food, great atmosphere, great servers, great everything. Our server went out of her way to help us with some food allergy issues by asking the chef if certain ingredients were present in some of the sauces. This led to an amazing dinner that we didn't have to be concerned about. Overall, this is a place we will go back to time and time again."

  • ""really like trader vics, the atmosphere is is a get away to the islands. " Food is very tasty, we had the salmon which is cooked in the smoke oven and the duck. Hmmm I would not order that again a little tuff. I have also had the lamb which was delious. Mai Tai are awesome as i would hope since Trader Vics was the original. Plus they have expanded on the traditional with a twist which are great too. We will go again"

  • "Love T V. 1944 Mai Tai is the best. Terrific Caesar Salad and the best MahiMahi ever; cooked perfectly, large portion, so moist and flavorful. Pineapple Upside-down Cake was great. The wine list while not extensive is varied with a selection for every taste. We will return."

  • "Not a bad thing! Trader Vic's has been a favorite of mine for over 40 years now. My father took me to the Dallas, Tx location as a youngster and once I became of age I frequented it on my own. the food is fairly standard these days (it was quite exotic in 1974, lol) but it is still delicious. The Trader Vics salad alone is worth the trip. The Peking Duck is my husbands favorite duck of any resaraunt and he travels to Asia on a regular basis, so that is saying quite a bit. Indulge in a classic Po Po tray, always fun and always delicious. Please don't forget the specialty cocktails, with a wonderful non-alcoholic selection included."

  • "We arrived a bit early and our waiter was not yet on shift. Another waiter filled in for him and was very gracious and helpful, we appreciated that. Food was good, atmosphere was fun."

  • "A group of seven ordered dinner, mostly steaks but other items as well. The steaks were all overdone by about one level of doneness. Some were "grissly: The drinks are consistently good, as are the appetizers, so maybe the solution is drinks and appetizers and skip the dinner. Trader Vic's in Portland used to have a New York Steak Malagasy: NY cooked in Chinese oven with a butter / Malagassy green peppercorn sauce. It was always first rate with a wonderful smoky taste. If they cold only do that one item right, they would have an entree winner."

  • "We wanted to take advantage of the March dine out specials in Portland and were thrilled that Trader Vic's was participating. They even featured one of our favorite meals one the list. A wonderful evening!"

  • "We sat at cozy booth for happy hour and Mai Tai and other drinks. At the restaurant we were seated right away with our reservation. We had a March special, a three course meal, Trader Vic's salad, 12 once New York steak and creme brûlée. The Chinese oven cooked our steak perfectly rare, so delicious and excellent smoked flavor filled in my mouth. Finishing our dinner with a delicious creme brûlée! So yummy! The plate was beautifully and artistically decorated and excellent services. I have to mention on sunflower seed and pumpkin seed cracker bread with cream-like peanut butter, so good! My husband said "WOW" on food value and all staff services! We were early at 4:30 on Saturday for happy hour and found parking right away."

  • "Met some friends for dinner at Trader Vic's this weekend and had a fabulous time. We had a couple pretty high maintenance Eaters in the group and all our requests were met with smiles and fabulous recommendations by our server. The food was very good and the drinks were fun and fruity. The atmosphere is unique and a good combo of tropical and night on the town. We were given plenty of time to talk and also had prompt response when we wanted it. Very good place to go with friends."

  • "The food is melt in your mouth delicious, the staff is very friendly and the service is outstanding. It's very family friendly, but also a hot spot to sit down and have a couple drinks."

  • "Our waiter was outstanding, however our food was not the best. I ordered the fire roasted chicken. It looked like it was pre-pared & tasted like it. The cauliflower was over cooked & over seasoned. My husbands steak was good. Our desert was good. I would return for happy hour, but probably not dinner."

  • "Trader Vic's inhabited the downtown Bensin Hotel for years. It was reflective of the original San Francisco restaurant. Over time it became worn at the edges and was finally replaced by El Goucho. Now, newly reinvented with a new menu it has become better than the original with an inventive menu and a knowledgable staff. We will be back."

  • "Trader Vic's is Trader Vic's . It has a great appetizer menu and drinks are good and fun. The atmosphere sets the tone for a unique dinning experience. The menu is somewhat limited, but they do is very good.....I think they make the most flavorful rack of lamb I have ever had."

  • "The food looked and sounded great but it had almost no flavor and was much too expensive. The service was great."

  • "I've dined at Trader Vic's several times and this was probably my least favorite visit. The service was a bit slow but picked up towards the end of our dinner. I ordered Volcano Shrimp as an entrée and was surprised when it arrived - the recipe had changed but not the details on the menu. I ended up sending it back in favor of another entrée that turned out to be good. In the end it was OK. The manager made a point of making sure all went well after the entrée issue. It took longer than anticipated to finally dine, though. I will be back but will likely stick to things like the steak or the like. There's no telling what other recipes have changed."

  • "In Portland visiting the sites and wanted a restaurant that would appeal to adults and teenagers...Trader Vic's accomplished this. Cheesy, but fun, 70's island decor with fun drinks both adult (mai tais) and kid-friendly in cool glasses. Our waiter was friendly and helpful and the food was much better than expected. Mushroom risotto was delicious and the ribs were excellent as well. Good time had by all, will definitely go back."

  • "Did our anniversary there. Great service and food. The ambiance is the best. We love this place. One suggestion would be to not use crushed ice in those great drinks they serve. Use some cubes."

  • "We came in a group of six and living social coupons. Our service was sooooo slow. Took a long time to get drinks each time we ordered and the time between courses was too long. We were happy to sit and socialize but it was really too long to wait."

  • "When TV first came to the Pearl, I weighed it against the old TV that was in the Benson Hotel for years. That was one of my favorite restaurants growing up for their wonderful Mai Tai's and Crab Rangoon and Bongo Bongo soup. They concentrated on a higher end Polynesian style cuisine. The new TV's menu is similar to the old, but does not have a lot of the old dishes I loved so much. The Mai Tai's are still wonderful and the Combo appetizer plate is as I remember it. I wish there were more dishes with an Asian flare like the old TV, but I have found a dish that reminds me of it. It is the dish which is a stir fry of beef and shrimp and veggies with rice on the side. It is called the Beef and Reef and I do enjoy it. Keep up the good work."

  • "The food & service and presentation were tremendous. Our server was friendly, engaging, and she helped make the evening all the more special. My only concern was an additional choice on the Valentines Day menu. The 4 course selection was outstanding, Prawns for appetizer, salad then Filet & Lobster, and finally Pineapple Upside down cake (that was incredible) however my wife is not a seafood person, so she chose to just order from the standard menu. The arrival of my appetizer & salad were a little awkward while she waited for her main course. True she could have just ordered an appetizer of her choice, but the convenience of just having another option for the Valentine's day menu would have been nice. All in all a tremendous evening."

  • "We made a reservation because it was pretty much the only restaurant available in Portland at 7:30. It was fantastic and perfect. the food was excellent. the atmosphere nice and different...tropical! We were in and out in a decent period of time."

  • "We are a bit of Trder Vic's fans and lovet he history and flavor of the brand. The service and food was great and the seating was perfect, which was right in front of the word smoker with our backs to the rest of the restaurant, it was almost like we were all alone. I am fairly new to Open table so the for Valentines night we were a little unsure of how long the wait would be but they sat us almost immediately. Thanks you."

  • "We came here for a weekend ladies weekend getaway. We had four people and two living social deals. It was so delicious! The portions are huge, the food was decadent, and the server was adorable! Would highly recommend to people who want a fun atmosphere with great drinks as well. Try the scorpion bowl and rum keg. Delish! If you are hesitant to try a new place due to price then try the living social! It saved us a hundred dollars, and the selection was great. Try it out! You won't be disappointed."

  • "Trader Vic's is a favorite restaurant of mine, but this last visit wasn't up to the usual standard. I came across a living-social deal for Trader Vic's, that offered a deal of a three course meal for $50 (a $100 value). Well, apparently this only applied to a separate menu, which is slightly annoying, but for such a great deal, I can handle it. However, there wasn't a vegetarian option on the menu. This means I had to a full-price item off the regular menu. All of this would've been okay, except that the service was so lackluster. No drink order was taken, in fact, the waitress was taken aback that we wanted drinks. Other than that we were essentially ignored all night. My advice, don't show up with a living-social deal."

  • "Disappointed again. The bar is fun as are the drinks but the food is sooooo uninspired and tired I wouldn't bother going. Trader Vics used to fun and special years ago. High end and worth it. Not anymore. Also our waiter consists brought us 3 of everything although we were a party of 4. One time ok. Three times..... Not ok. I recommend you pass up Trader Vic's for anything else close by."

  • "What a wonderful, romantic atmosphere and a masterful dining experience! From the excellent attentive service, to the warm wood tones and rich lighting, all built around artistically presented dishes of perfect cuisine..... I gave this night a perfect 10!"
