We opted to share a few tidbits... spicy spider roll, coconut prawns, salmon salad (with purple potato slices!), and duck tacos. Sharing smaller plates allowed us the opportunity to taste a variety of menu items. My fave was the spicy spider roll and the salmon salad. Never had duck before, but it was quite tasty! The prawns were a little "bready", but not bad. The food is consistently good, the drinks are fun and most importantly they can handle the crush of pre-event dining. Also, love the fact that reservations are honored spot-on. We notice that the restaurant seems to be cutting back in some ways, like not offering the "right" drink glasses (possibly because people have been stealing them?). At our recent trip, the portions seemed smaller, particularly on the curry dish, which came with a small helping of two condiments (chutney & currants) in a small side side dish rather than the wide array in a specially designed holder that wraps around the plate. The lights are dim to create an adult atmosphere. It can be a romantic place too, if your love is their with you. But it also could be a fun place to go with friends. They have a large bar area in the front with the main dining in the back.
I made a reservation and we were seated within 5 minutes. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I recommend their Original Mai Tai (if you want an adult beverage) because it comes out with a flaming lime on top! It was so pretty.
I got the "All In" Fried Rice and my hubby got the Teriyaki Beef Tenderloin and Prawns. We also tried the appetizer & desert sampler! It was delicious! Our fondest memories of Trader Vic's are from the old Beverly Hills location. We've also had several dinners at their San Francisco and Chicago locations in the past. If not, you've got a nice quiet place for a romantic tropical dinner. They had live music going, which really contributed to the atmosphere. Only thing I was disappointed in was that there were no souvenir glasses available to purchase, which was something I had wanted to do. I was told the demand was too high, and they had no ordered sufficient quantities to keep up with maintaining their own supply...let alone customer purchases. The food is always excellent..3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMThe original Trader Vic'sThe original Trader Vic's was my favorite restaurant, and I was thrilled to see it's come back. The new place is pretty much the same, and many of the things they changed are improvements (the cho-chos are premium steaks now, for example). I do miss the butterflies that the old place would serve the dipping sauces in.
Our server, Melissa, was fabulous. However, there were some bussers who would occasionally check up on us when Melissa was helping another customer, and they kept screwing our order up. Fortunately, this did not stop us from having a great time, and we are excited to return to the new Trader Vic's in the near future.2/21/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Lunch EverWhat a wonderful dining experience. Also, the sea bass was the most delicious sea bass that I may have ever had. It's perfectly tender and buttery and has a great sweet, crispy glaze on top. I'm drooling just recalling it!
