  • "This restaurant has a kitschy 'tiki' atmosphere and polynesian fusion cuisine. Some of the offerings, while not groundbreaking, are enjoyable. There is complementary valet parking and a decent view of the bay. It's a plausible choice for a themed, romantic evening. However, my latest experience reminded me why my patronage of this place has waned over the years. Once the ambience wears off, you're left with menu items that are lackluster to fair, seating that is just a little too close to each other, and service that is adequate, but seems a little weary, or a little disingenuous. I wouldn't be disappointed with a romantic evening here, for the first time, but I wouldn't expect a memorable culinary experience to go with it."

  • "Good food and a great view. Started with Oysters and artichoke dip. Both were great. Had the original Mai Tai and it was one of the best I've had. Had a great table at the window with a view of the bay. A great dining experience."

  • "Still love the South Pacific motif: the cocktails, the decor and the menu are great....and fun too. The service was very good and the setting in the Emeryville harbor is a treat. 3 thumbs up."

  • "We had a excellent experience. Food, ambience, drinks, service, everything. The 8 oz filet was as tender a steak as I have ever had and at a lot lower price than a steak house. The Atlantic salmon was also very good and entrees come with side dishes. This is a trip back in time when Tiki restaurants were so popular."

  • "Trader Vic's is a chance to see what things were like in the past. It is the home of the original Mai Tai. I liked the Maui version with pineapple juice better, but my husband tried and liked the original. The oven roasted items were very tasty and done well. The starters were "old school" fried and unsurprising (crab Rangoon puffs). Given all the California cuisine around they could maybe update a couple of the menu items. This said the view was beautiful, service was attentive and it was a decent value. Might go back to check out some of the other drinks and enjoy the view."

  • "We treated like royalty. Wonderful ambiance, amazing food and drink. Us gals have been coming here for thirty years, here's to the next 30+! Thank you! !"

  • "New menu as of earlier this year produced food that was much better than several experiences over the past few years. We wouldn't repeat lettuce cups with chicken since this offering has become so ubiquitous at restaurants and evokes PF Changs. Interestingly, although the food was improved the service was not up to the usual TV standard; we had to ask for plates more than once, timing was rushed and items were tossed on the table and not served. Not sure what that was about."

  • "This was our second time here. First was appetizers and drinks in the bar area. That is the way to go. Coconut shrimp is delicious and they have nice cocktails in a great setting. Dinner service and food was poor. Waitress took a long time to get to our table, food took a long time to come. The duck was DRY. Just like pieces of shoe leather with tiny portions of plum sauce and green onions. Only 2 wraps came when there should have been 5. Soggy salads. Not worth the money at all."

  • "It's really too bad that the owners don't realize how awesome this place actually is. They really should be playing Martin Denny type music, getting some decent waitstaff, and playing up the hipster/kitschy/cool factor. As it is, the place is full of grandparents, which is fine as they're clearly cool grandparents, They drinks are well done - and we are tiki drink snobs. We bring our kids although it's is not particularly kid friendly. Food is ok but expensive. Nice views, great decor. If you drink, designate someone to drive or take a cab (call it cheap insurance), as the drinks are deceptively potent."

  • "Our main entrees took a little longer than usual to come out, but our server was more concerned about it than we were. Even though we had no complaints, the manager comped part of our meal due to the delay."

  • "Trader Vics has great drinks! The Mai-Tai can be one of 3 versions. Quiet dining - perfect for talking to your dinner partner. I ordered the cod - and it was good. I was not knocked out and I thought it was overpriced. The Mahi-Mahi looked better and the curry sauce over sweet potatoes was delicious. Fun atmosphere."

  • "My family has been going to Trader Vic's since it was on San Pablo Ave in the 1950's. I took some out of town "foodies" here and they loved it. They couldn't decide which of the many items to select, and were considering coming back for lunch for more!"

  • "Enjoyed our dinner reservations this past Saturday evening. Food, service and ambiance were all very good. Made a point of noting we will have to return before too long. Sometimes it's really nice to stay in the East Bay and not fight all of that Bay Bridge traffic."

  • "Six of us enjoyed Trader Vic's last Saturday night. I'm still dreaming about the Tuna Poke and the rack of Lamb. The service was excellent, the food superb, the drinks outstanding! Definitely will be going back. The view was amazing. Loved every moment of the experience."

  • "The restaurant was perfect. Food was good and wasn't too expensive. The view of the bay was awesome! Reservations were easy to get, but make sure that you make them at least a week in advance, they tend to go quickly. The bar isn't bad either, and there are non-alcoholic drinks for those who don't wanna drink. Plan on valet parking as the parking space isn't that big. All in all, it was a wonderful dining experience."

  • "I took my boyfriend here to celebrate his birthday.. After having to find parking on the street because the complimentary valet wouldn't let us park our own car, we were seated immediately thanks to reservations, even though we were 10 minutes late. Our server tended to us almost immediately and we were served with bread, crackers,& the delicious coconut peanut butter. We enjoyed the fried calamari and our beef & reef. But for some reason the service of our waiter slowly declined throughout the night. We were done with our meals and were waiting for at least 10 minutes for someone to clear the table and give us the desert menu. It took us another 10-15 minutes to receive our check. I'll come back but I do expect more from this place."

  • "We enjoyed a bayside table, with spectacular views of the new Bay Bridge, the City and the North Bay. We were particularly pleased with Trader Vic's returning to its original recipe with the appetizer Prawns."

  • "As a Tiki enthusiast, I've long wanted to make a trip to the famous Trader Vics. They did not disappoint! The ambiance was fantastic (lots of tikis, but done very tastefully), the service was extremely friendly and the food far exceeded our expectations. The Mai Tai (both the original and the '44) lives up to the legend! We had the only kids in the restaurant, but they were very accommodating. Recommended, not just for fellow Tiki enthusiasts but just for a nice night out."

  • "Trader Vics has been a favorite dining experience for decades. The Emeryville site offers a spectacular view and a consistent menu -- with one exception. Last year every one of the desserts at Trader Vics could be ranked as superb in both taste and presentation. As of 2/2014 the desserts were mediocre at best and uninspired at the very least. Even the simple option of triple fruit gelato was gone. Since our dining at TVs usually marks a special event, like a birthday or anniversary, a fine dessert should be an option to wrap up the experience."

  • "We were given a gift certificate to Trader Vic's. We had not been there in many (30+) years. We had a fun evening: the food was good, the service was excellent and our table had a great bay view. Our only criticism was that the mai tais, although tasty, were very weak."

  • "The long time favorites are gone from the menu. Cuisine has definitely dropped several notches in availability and execution."

  • "What a disappointment. This used to be our go-to special-evening spot. The bongo-bongo soup is no longer on the menu, but is available by request. The recipe is different and had an unappetizing skin as if it had been sitting under the heat lamp for a while. No more pake duck either, what, in my opinion, was the best thing on and later off the menu, i.e., one could request it. I ordered the spicy lamb curry, which was not spicy at all; it was okay, but just. Our server hovered and was a bit over-eager. Sadly, I don't feel the desire to return. But thanks for all the great memories and fine food, Trader Vic's."

  • "I first went to TV's as a kid when my parents took the family for special occasions. That was 60 years ago in SF. The Trader Vic's in Emeryville continues that fine tradition. We went on New Years Eve and all the staff were wearing party hats and colorful beads. I had the Indonesian Lamb with Krispy Cream Spinach with a crab salad to start. I expected the salad to just have pieces of crab in it. In the center was the usual crab salad. The kicker was with fresh crab legs all around the perimeter. Excellent. The lamb was cooked to perfection. My wife had the beef and vegetable stir fry and she loved it. Of course, I had to have their famous "snow ball" for dessert. This was a wonderful way to start the new year. Way to go, TV's."

  • "Sat at a window table with a nice view of the Bay. Service was prompt, courteous, knowledgeable and professional. The menu choices were varied and enticing. We had won ton soup, which came in a surprisingly large bowl. The soup was excellent, with five won tons. The soup was excellent. For our entree we chose Beef 'n Reef, which was also excellent. Portion was just the right size. Ambiance was excellent. Noise level was low and one could speak in normal tones. The restaurant is 50 miles from our house, so we plan to return for special occasions. Highly recommended."

  • "We celebrated our 56th anniversary at Trader Vic's, a favorite for special occasions. It's a scenic spot especially at dusk, and our window seats gave us a good view of the lighted yachts in the harbor. We had Mai Tai drinks with the appetizer platter which was a fun way to begin the evening. The seafood dinners were good, but not outstanding. The meal ended with a coconut ice cream sundae. Service was excellent and we left feeling happy."

  • "we found the restaurant very dark and were unable to read our menus without taking out our cellphones to give us some light, when we told the waiter and busboy they ignored us and really did not seem to care. the wait staff was not friendly at all and barely gave us a smile or a friendly word.would not go back to the restaurant, did enjoy the bar, the staff seemed much more friendly there and loved the view of the harbor,,,,did not like the fact that the waitress did not explain to us which mai tais were happy hour priced ones and were surprised when we got the bill."

  • "We have always loved Trader Vic's with the delicious tropical drinks and Chinese food. They have added some interesting new items while maintaining the old standards such as chicken chow mein and the money salad. I took two associates to lunch and it was festive with the nice Christmas decorations and the food was great. We had fish tacos and a shrimp sandwich that was created in a mini loaf of bread perfectly toasted and prepared. Excellent, warm service as well."

  • "After many years of a steadily declining experience at Spengers for our annual family holiday lunch, we decided on Vics', which hadn't been visited for 25 years or more. What a pleasant surprise. From the cheerful valet parking all the way through the host and the servers it was a very enjoyable experience. The food was great and everyone's tastes were accounted for amply. The wine list while not huge had very well chosen bottles. The dishes were well presented as well as delicious. My wife had recently returned from England and thought that Vic's fish and chips rivaled the best she had there."

  • "Trader Vic's is usually a fun place, especially the view of the Bay and the Polynesian (or whatever it is) atmosphere. This time was a mixed experience because although we had a 6:00 reservation and arrived at precisely 6:04, they were turning people away due to supposedly lack of food for the Thanksgiving buffet special. We complained, and they seated us near the window. Actually, there was still plenty of food, and we had a swell dinner with a great table and an attentive wait person. Food was fine as were the mimosas. It was just kind of awkward having to argue to get in and get fed on Thanksgiving. Deduct one star for awkwardness. Stuff happens."

  • "Long ago we'd head to Trader Vic's for a "vibrant bar scene," it was a hot spot and tons of fun. Now it's the restaurant we take our senior relatives to, because they remember it as it used to be. While the food is still delicious, it's not that special any longer. Don't get me wrong - we enjoy ourselves. But it's like traveling back in time, and not as fun as it used to be. The drinks are still okay, but I'm sure they are using well likker...just sort of tired, and not very different from other expensive seafood restaurants. I have been here in a group, and that's fun, because everyone is drinking, but for family dinners, or a couple, it's sort of bland. Beautiful view of the marina though."
