Diner Reviews
  • "My friend and I went there on a Friday night. The place was packed for special event. It was very loud but on a regular day I think it may have been quieter. The food was average, I had the roast duck, which was very salty. My friend had the pasta which she said had an after taste! Don't think we would go there anytime soon."

  • "The food is mixed: my companion had some very good salmon while I suffered with underdone poultry. The service is mixed: bus staff is excellent and attentive, but our waiter was nowhere to be seen throughout the meal. There were only 18 people in the entire restaurant so he had no excuse not to be present. Someone thought the dining and extremely loud, pounding club music make a good combination. They do not."

  • "The decor in Trace is very contemporary, and the seating is extremely comfortable. Because of the way the restaurant is set up, it offers a great deal of privacy. The mixed drinks were fantastic, and our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and food."

  • "My wife and I went there for her birthday, I requested they create something special for dessert. To our surprise a very artistic and beautiful dessert was prepared for the occasion. they helped make this a very special day."

  • "As walking into this restaurant, there was a pungent fishy smell which made me wonder whether it was a decent place to eat. The host and hostess were very welcoming and sat us down quickly. The server took her time to come and take our order when it was really slow there. We ordered a bottle of wine which was partially spilled. It showed the lack of professionalism and training and attentiveness. The flat bread was too oily and really felt mediocre. The octopus and potato starter was amazing. The entrees were great. I ordered the duck which was excellent with wonderful taste and presentation. The busboys dropped the silverware and nearly spilled the wine on me."

  • "There were some unusual choices on the menu. I enjoyed the chicken liver mousse, which was great. I added a beet salad to round out lunch, and the two dishes worked together well. Very close and convenient to the convention center, with excellent service."

  • "The food was better than I was expecting considering it's a hotel restaurant. The staff was very friendly and attentive, which helped a lot. It's close and convenient so I would definitely consider coming back, especially for one-on-ones."

  • "Had dinner with friends during dine-about-time. Great selection of cocktails, wine and the food, of course! I had the cauliflower risotto and salmon. Dee-lish! I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Myself and 3 girlfriends tried out this restaurant while visiting the area from Seattle. It was also the "dine around town" week. We all took advantage of the promotion. The food and service were both great, all our meals were the best we had i our trip to SFO! The beet salad was outstanding, along with the rest of the meal!! FANTASTIC! A great value with the Promotion as well! will definitely be back the next time I'm in town!"

  • "Haven't been back here since the original restaurant was XYZ. The atmosphere is still nice and the service is friendly and gracious. Was here for "Dine About Town" menu. It was well prepared and nicely presented. The bread is really good, choice of olive, walnut, and sour dough. My only complaint is the house cocktails are $15. Can't imagine how much a regular cocktail would cost. Also, the wine pours are very small. "

  • "This was the wrong place to celebrate an anniversary--so that's on us. The service was OK. The food mediocre to bad. For the price, not worth it. If you want a place to hang out with folks, have a couple of drinks, and then dinner and you're OK with over spending, fine. But in SF there's a million other better places to spend your money."

  • "I went with two friends for lunch yesterday; we used to go regularly but hadn't been in a few months. It was excellent - our server was great, friendly and attentive. The food was delicious including the tuna salad and the flatbread with sausage, potatoes and cheese - yum! Will go back soon!"

  • "We entertained clients twice at Trace during a conference. We chose Trace because it's across the street from the Mascone center. The lunch menu has limited options, but everyone found something. All the entrees were well prepared with good presentation. The Hamburger was served with an aioli dill sauce that gave it a fresh flavor. The service was quick and professional, as I would expect in San Francisco. We had a little trouble getting a table, but we were making same day reservation during a conference. On the whole, it's a little pricy, but a good business lunch close to the convention center."

  • "The food was delicious, but the service really sets Trace apart. The manager, the hostess, our waiter...everyone gave an exceptional level of great, personal service. Really well made cocktails, nice urban atmosphere, and my steak was perfection. We were heading to Metreon for the evening, it was the ideal place to start our party."

  • "I love Trace for the contemporary interior, for the service and the short menu. I am tired of traditional, classic, old fashion restaurants. Trace is the place to go to a different, new one. I have been there a couple of times, and will go in the future with pleasure. I loved the friendly waiters, and the short menu, which I found easy to choose from. Food is very tasty, and comes in time - no long waiting. Thank you Trace for the wonderful experience."

  • "Started with chicken liver pate which was terrifric. Plenty to share and it came with more than enough crostini for the two of us. Beet salad was good but not outstanding. Halibut was light, moist and beautifully presented. Excellent. Shared a chocolate desert which was also excellent. They also make their own bread - three different kinds. Can fill up on the bread alone, it is so good. Will definitely return. Roger, our waiter, was outstanding. Made great recommendations and was a real pro. "

  • "i had a dinner meeting with doctors who appreciate good food. We had an excellent table that was very conducive to conversation. The food - every dish, every course was truly special. i was amazed by the combinations and innovation that went into the menu. The outcome from appetizer to dessert was excellent. Our servers was friendly and efficient and made great recommendations. My favorite dining experience during a week long trip to SF and many high end restaurants."

  • "Hands down one of the best dining experiences I've had. From the moment I walked in I felt taken care of. From the friendly hostess and staff. The food was amazing. Halibut crudo a must. Along with the fried quale. The scallops were cooked perfectly. The waiter was very attentive offering fantastic wine to pair with the good. Thank you for a wonderful experience. I will definitely fine here again"

  • "I tried this place for brunch with a friend, since we live in town and it was offered on Gilt City. It was a quiet Sunday and wasn't very crowded, and it was very light and beautiful. The juices we got were incredibly delicious -- I highly recommend the one with parsley and mint. The brunch item was pretty good, but I probably wouldn't go back just for the food. The potatoes were a little undercooked, although the poached egg was really well done, and the seasoning was a little bland. It was a nice hotel brunch if you were in town and didn't want to travel far, but with so many amazing brunch places in SF, it's not someplace I would seek out again."

  • "The food and service were both hit and miss. Some dishes were good. Some were way too salty. The hostess was great and very attentive and friendly. Our server was polite but seemed annoyed the whole time. The ambience was nice."

  • "The menu was inventive, everything was delicious and the portions were large enough to share or for two meals. The waiter was accommodating, making sure to get us out in time for a performance. And it wasn't too noisy for a conversation!"

  • "The food was great, especially the starters. The scallops with angel hair was a bit salty -- seemed as though they may not have adjusted for the saltiness in the roe."

  • "Wait staff was very warm and welcoming. Food was good and solid, nothing to write home about. Not sure if I will venture to this place for brunch again as there are so many brunch options in SF. Overall good experience."

  • "The restaurant is too noisy for a business discussion. There is little privacy so not conducive to discussion. Convenient to Moscone."
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "I had high expectations but Trace didn't really get close to meeting them. The food was good but not 5*, an over exuberant chef "over egging the cake" in this case the strong tangerine on an otherwise wonderfully cooked piece of salmon. The lighting in the venue is far too harsh. The greeter was absent for close to 3m. The service is really good but slightly over intimate and verbose."

  • "Food was excellent. Portions were on the small side which is fine with me. I had the salmon and it was outstanding!"

  • "Four of us enjoyed dinner here before a performance at YBCA across the street. Each of us loved our choices. Our waiter, Rodney, was perfect. The only downside is the loud music coming in from the nearby bar. I'm sure it is meant to be cool, but unless you choose your table carefully, you will need to shout to have a conversation."

  • "We had the best service here - our waiter, Roger, was also Trace's beekeeper. Yep, they have their own hives so you should definitely try their dishes with the rooftop honey (go for the bread pudding!). The butternut squash risotto was excellent! We also had the scallops with their homemade angel hair pasta and the roasted chicken."
