Diner Reviews
  • "Hands down one of the best dining experiences I've had. From the moment I walked in I felt taken care of. From the friendly hostess and staff. The food was amazing. Halibut crudo a must. Along with the fried quale. The scallops were cooked perfectly. The waiter was very attentive offering fantastic wine to pair with the good. Thank you for a wonderful experience. I will definitely fine here again"

  • "I tried this place for brunch with a friend, since we live in town and it was offered on Gilt City. It was a quiet Sunday and wasn't very crowded, and it was very light and beautiful. The juices we got were incredibly delicious -- I highly recommend the one with parsley and mint. The brunch item was pretty good, but I probably wouldn't go back just for the food. The potatoes were a little undercooked, although the poached egg was really well done, and the seasoning was a little bland. It was a nice hotel brunch if you were in town and didn't want to travel far, but with so many amazing brunch places in SF, it's not someplace I would seek out again."

  • "The food and service were both hit and miss. Some dishes were good. Some were way too salty. The hostess was great and very attentive and friendly. Our server was polite but seemed annoyed the whole time. The ambience was nice."

  • "The menu was inventive, everything was delicious and the portions were large enough to share or for two meals. The waiter was accommodating, making sure to get us out in time for a performance. And it wasn't too noisy for a conversation!"

  • "The food was great, especially the starters. The scallops with angel hair was a bit salty -- seemed as though they may not have adjusted for the saltiness in the roe."

  • "Wait staff was very warm and welcoming. Food was good and solid, nothing to write home about. Not sure if I will venture to this place for brunch again as there are so many brunch options in SF. Overall good experience."

  • "Great place for business lunches...especially if you are attending a trade show/event at the Moscone Center. -Aaron"

  • "That hanger steak - is the dish. Damien recommended an Oban 14, and they paired perfectly. Had a wonderful dining experience for a business lunch and we all left lunch full and happy."

  • "Loved or server. Interacted with us and read our minds when it came to ordering. Knew the menu up and down. Ask of our food was cooked to perfection."

  • "I brought a customer to lunch at Trace last week. I didn't know that he was a 'foodie'. The meal was excellent and he was impressed with my choice."

  • "The restaurant is too noisy for a business discussion. There is little privacy so not conducive to discussion. Convenient to Moscone."

  • "I had high expectations but Trace didn't really get close to meeting them. The food was good but not 5*, an over exuberant chef "over egging the cake" in this case the strong tangerine on an otherwise wonderfully cooked piece of salmon. The lighting in the venue is far too harsh. The greeter was absent for close to 3m. The service is really good but slightly over intimate and verbose."

  • "Food was excellent. Portions were on the small side which is fine with me. I had the salmon and it was outstanding!"

  • "Four of us enjoyed dinner here before a performance at YBCA across the street. Each of us loved our choices. Our waiter, Rodney, was perfect. The only downside is the loud music coming in from the nearby bar. I'm sure it is meant to be cool, but unless you choose your table carefully, you will need to shout to have a conversation."

  • "We had the best service here - our waiter, Roger, was also Trace's beekeeper. Yep, they have their own hives so you should definitely try their dishes with the rooftop honey (go for the bread pudding!). The butternut squash risotto was excellent! We also had the scallops with their homemade angel hair pasta and the roasted chicken."

  • "Upon arriving at this restaurant, it was pretty empty. There were tables all around, the bar only had 3 seated at it, and yet it took nearly 20 minutes to get a table. Upon being seated at the table, we again waited a long period of time before someone even came to offer us water. We were told that someone would be along to take our order shortly; however, we again waited a significant amount of time before being approached by a waiter. The waiter took our order and things proceeded as normal, but we didn't get much follow up. Our drinks never got refilled and the waiter only came around once to ask if we needed anything. Unfortunately, this was during the time that my date was using the restroom. I more to write, but hit the text limit."

  • "Food and ambiance were wonderful for 4 of us dining. Had the Dine About menu. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the close table we sat at."

  • "I took my sister here for her birthday the other night, I purchased the GILT city voucher which had 3 courses and a drink for each course. The first drink, the lemon grass drop was FANTASTIC, and I'm not one for cocktails. The pinot noir that followed was great as well that I continued it into my third course. The ambience at TRACE was very quiet and greatly decorated (it is in the W after all), perfect for a special occasion or date spot. The food was awesome, I had the ox tail and onion soup and then the scallops. Overall, it was a perfect present and the service added to it even more."

  • "Food is not even close to ok for these prices. High priced cafeteria. Only thing either if us even liked was the chicken liver louse. And on Christmas"

  • "Staff is absolutely wonderful. From the hostess to the waiter to the bus boy. Decor is very modern and trendy. Food is good although not outstanding. Serving sizes are small. Will definitely be back for the service and the ambience."

  • "I've been going to this restaurant for several years as it is convenient before the Smuin Ballet performances at the Yerba Buena Theatre. Frankly, I liked it much better before it was completely remodeled and became Trace. We both ordered the crab salad and I thought it was tasteless. The portion was fine. We had asked the waiter if it was enough for an entre. He said yes and told us it was delicious and his favorite thing on the menu. I never ask for a waiter's recommendation but he offered. The bread made up for the salad. Very good bread, especially the olive. I may try it again because it's convenient but unless this was an isolated incident, I will have to find something else."

  • "I picked Trace for a special holiday lunch for my team. We had a great time--nice selection of food choices for the varied attendees, great service which was paced just right. We had a wonderful time and great food--definitely would recommend it to others even if its a smaller group."

  • "It's close to Moscone centre and makes a perfect location for lunch during a big convention. Service is good and the food is above average. I like how they offer the same menu in the bar which makes life much easier."

  • "Wine list by the glass has some real gems. Austere decor was pleasant on a slow Monday. Some may find the house music annoying. I was busy Shazaaming. Had terrific nettle gnocchi and asked waiter which was better between vegetable terrine and the hangar steak. He pondered a bit before choosing the terrine (which I really enjoyed -- it was more a deconstructed terrine. Funny thing later as he have his patter to other tables of what the best dishes were, neither of my choices was among them. So I have something to lol forward to when I go back. And I applaud his tact in allowing me to choose the dishes I wanted. He either had not tasted them or did not care for them Wish I'd asked. I was nonplussed by the dessert menu."

  • "Ambiance is very modern as expected for a restaurant in a W hotel. The energy levels in the bar area were high - I sat in the quieter restaurant side which I appreciated. I tried the walnut bread, nettle gnocchi and the pork loin with lentils. The walnut bread was different and delicious and the gnocchi was simple and superb tasting. Unfortunately, the pork loin was not memorable. The service was amazing - attentive but did not interrupt a phone call I was on."

  • "The design is awesome in this restaurant the food was only alright. Basic blandish flavor--nothing exciting. This place may not be up to par for the SF brunch scene, but the bar is cool. Perhaps will try again for a happy hour during the week. The service was good, the food needs some work."

  • "We were seated as requested in a back quiet section to accomodate the group conversation and older ears... we had great service;.. all the dishes were excellent from Salad to the main Vegetarian entree one member requested---unique and very tasty.. Even the bread needs of the gluten free were recognized and served.. overall one of the best dining experiences i have had in SF in a long long time; we will return!"

  • "if Roger is your server, ask him about the bees he keeps on the 4th floor roof - they use that honey in some of their dishes! although there's a new Chef, he comes from Michael Mina's stable of restaurants, so no doubt the high quality and social consciousness of the restaurant will continue, or exceed itself, and there will continue to be a focus on the freshest seasonal ingredients, from the area's best sustainable providers.. I like that there's many types of seating available, from a long communal high-top to interesting architecture to give select tables a somewhat private feel."

  • "Our waiter, Damien, was fantastic. great personality, helpful, not obtrusive, sincere The food was great, the servings maybe a little bit on the small side in one or two cases. We went for my friend's birthday and got extra special service from Damien and the very capable pastry chef The décor is great, maybe a little too sunny at a few of the window seats at certain parts of the day. But I am not too sure about that as we requested a more interior table."

  • "Very interesting menu with a creative flair. Good selection of menu items and wine. Reasonably priced, considering it is in an upscale hotel."

  • "Last time I went to this location it was the XYZ restaurant in the W Hotel. They changed the name to Trace and must have also changed the chef because the food was fantastic and so were the wine choices. Went with a friend right before a performance at YBCA. Can't wait to go back with my husband!"

  • "For the price, this was a huge let down. Some dishes were good but others really missed the mark. Service was definitely not up to par for what this restaurant "should" be. It showed in the surroundings. Wasn't very full when all the other restaurants I tried to book were full 2 weeks ago."
