  • "Have been to Townhall a handful of times. Convenient location in SOMA / Embarcadero, close to BART and Transbay Terminal. This time around had a bottle of the Albarino they offered by the glass - very refreshing after a hot day. We started w/ the peach & plum salad & the tuna tartare w/ fried green tomatoes. Both were really delicious - well balanced, light (even w/ the fried tomatoes). We shared their fried chicken as it was my best friend's first time at Townhall. Some of the best fried chicken in the city. We ended with the pot de creme because, well, duh. It's the best."

  • "I was in SF for a business dinner with the team I support and took them to dinner at Town Hall. I'd been to Town Hall a few times in the past, and have always been impressed! We enjoyed the pork chop, steaks and fried chicken around the table along with the jalepeno corn bread and the Espetus Pinot Noir (Russian River 2011). Overall feedback was fantastic, food phenomenal, and we would certainly return!"

  • "I went here for lunch on a Wednesday. The restaurant was quite empty at 1:30 pm. From the lunch menu we ordered the grilled sea bass, the linguine with shrimp an sausage, and a tossed chicken salad. All were amazing. The bass came on top of a warm sweet cornbread that complemented the bass perfectly. The pasta was simple and extremely tasty (with a New Orleans kick). The salad was also light and tasty. For desert we ordered a warm peach galete that came with fresh strawberries, marscapone whipped cream, and pistachios. This desert was the perfect ending to the meal; it was so light and sweet—but not too sweet. The strawberries with the peach galette were amazing. I would highly recommend Town Hall."

  • "Disclaimer: we had a group of 8 and the restaurant also seemed to have several other large groups that evening. Despite that, the food just took such an incredibly long time to come out. The appetizers took 30-40 minutes and were tasty but very small. Then we waited another hour and fifteen minutes for our entrees to come out. We had a few vegetarians, and the veggie meal (the only option on the menu - even the tomato soup isn't vegetarian!) was so disappointing. Burnt and just hardly any food at all. The rest of the table had seafood entrees and enjoyed them but we were all so tired at that point, we just wanted to go home. Maybe this place would be good for friends, but find somewhere else for a business dinner. Also very noisy!"

  • "Everyte I come to SF, Town Hall is always on my list of places to go. The wine list is selected by one of the city's best sommeliers. Wine is typically delivered to you by this amazing wine expert that knows what works with the menu. The bar sticks high quality Liquors and features amazing drinks--the imaginative Peyite Trail was featured this time and was...delicious and unlike anything we've ever tasted. The apps are so good...the entrees are not only large they will be talked about many times after you leave Town Hall. The best item is Mary's Fried Chicken...perfectly prepared with a side of mashed garlic red potatoes and steamed broccoli. Yum!"

  • "The service was very slow when we went there on a Saturday night. It took about 20 minutes to get our first drink and then at least another 15 to get appetizers. Waiter was apologetic. Also really noisy in there. Fried oysters was fantastic but my steak was overdone and so spicy I had to scrape the garlic-jalapeno sauce off the top. Desert was the best part by far. Maybe get appetizers and desert and call it a night."

  • "We had an amazing dinner celebrating our 7th anniversary. They were kind enough to seat us at a nice private "nook" table (which was perfect because I lost my voice and was afraid we wouldn't be able to talk!). We had champagne, delicious deep fried oysters, the ham sandwich was to die for, awesome halibut and THE...FRIED...CHICKEN!! The food was outstanding and so was the service. They made us feel special and made it a point to congratulate us and surprised us with a complimentary plate of dessert bites since we were too full to actually order a dessert. We will be back!"

  • "Food and service was outstanding. The restaurant was very busy and the way the tables are set up (like a Town Hall) makes navigation difficult for servers. It took a few extra minutes to be waited on, but once we were connected the service was fantastic. The food was wonderful. I ordered a butter lettuce salad which was generous and delicious, followed by halibut over fresh spring peas and vegetables. It was one of the best dishes I have had in recent memory. The halibut was beautifully prepared and the peas and vegetables tasted like they had been freshly picked from the garden. Somehow I managed to order a chocolate butterscotch pudding for dessert. Save room, get it "to-go" -- it was perfect."

  • "The food was incredible - fresh and innovative take on traditional dishes. I tried the fried chicken, the apricot-plum salad and the fried okras. The fried okra was to die for. I wish the server had told me though that the portion size on the fried chicken was worthy of two people. On the service side, I was disappointed. First, the staff was very awkward in seating a single guest. Somehow the idea of someone showing up all alone to dine at a restaurant like this is unheard of? I was seated at probably the worst corner table next to a column and my server showed up later than tables whose guests had arrived after me. There was not a lot of advice offered on the menu, no attention during my meal, and I had to wait forever for the check."

  • "Food is good , yet not worth it. Went TH night; no issue getting seated. Noisy place; prepare to talk loud like at a bar on game night. That wasn't so bad. Here is what went wrong: 1. My appetizer was served with my dinner (I expect it to come out way earlier). 2. Takes forever to get anyones attention and get your food. 3. My $35 steak was over cooked well-done (ordered med-rare). 4. My dessert & coffee orders were placed at the same time after dinner. Expectation is that it all comes up quick AND served at the same time. Reality: espresso took 15 min and served cold/warm, and then 15 min later the dessert was served. Spoke to Mgr, and he did not care what I had to say about the above."

  • "We've been here a few times now over the last year, and it has been consistently good every time. The food is best described as fine Southern dining with a touch of New American- from perfectly cooked fried chicken to a well executed duck breast. There is something for everyone's taste, which made it perfect for our family dinner after our City Hall wedding. Everyone was happy with their dishes (even the vegetarian), and gave the place rave reviews. My favorite item on the menu, and a must have, is the BBQ Shrimp- it is amazing! You'll want to get extra bread for this one to sop up all that delicious sauce that comes on it."

  • "Such a lovely locale and I've long wanted to try it. But the good was extremely mediocre. Best dish was the ham and biscuits, which we shared as an appetizer. My veal meatballs were grainy, dry and bland. My husband's fish stew was lukewarm and the shrimp were soft, mealy and a little off-tasting -- ie not fresh and crisp. Such a shame since the menu is creative and the place packed, but this is another high-concept SF restaurant serving upscale cafeteria food. "

  • "Everything in the restaurant was really good and the waiter steered me to great wines and food. My only gripe was the valet. It was more expensive that i had anticipated; it was $20, but that doesn't really surprise me and isn't really a problem. I just wish that for that price, they would have posted it somewhere so I knew it going in and that the valet would have left my radio presets, mirror and seat presets alone or at least had the courtesy to return them to their original positions."

We smashed it and called the waitress over. They comped our dinner but we were really disappointed at the overall experience and won't be back."

  • "I had heard a lot about this place and wanted to check it out for awhile. Service was pretty good, our server was knowledgeable about the menu and wine(great wine list by the way!). Food was okay.....veal meatballs were lacking flavor, squash apricot soup didn't have those flavors but instead the garnishes of cilantro and jalapeno were all you could taste. Pork chop was dry, ribs under cooked, side of kale to salty to eat. On a positive side, the duck was really good, red pepper jelly and biscuits with the ham were awesome, ham and cheese toast is a meal in itself! Desserts however were the best part-Butterscotch chocolate pot de creme and banana ice box were the best. Overall.....couple of things shined but you can find better in SF."

  • "The restaurant was so noisy that my wife and I could not hear each other from across the table. Further, we were given a table where, at a right angle from my head, less than 18" away, was another person, facing away from me, at a table for about 10. We felt as though we were at the kid's table next to the adults. We left, went to Roy's, were able to discuss the issues that we needed to discuss. The hostess was gracious as we explained that we desired to talk during dinner and that the noise level was unpleasant. I love this restaurant--but, apparently, only on weekends."

I dissuaded my co-workers from taking the easy route and eating at the hotel. There was some grumbling about being too tired to actually go out in search of a meal but they were *real* happy that we did afterward."

  • "We had 7 pm reservations and arrived early. We were immediately greeted and offered the opportunity to be seated early which we accepted. The staff was very attentive, courteous and respectful. We were seated by an open window which created a cold draft for me. I requested moving to another table or the possibility of closing the window. The staff immediately responded offering either option and quickly remedied the situation. The food was outstanding and the meal was topped off with a complimentary dessert to honor our anniversary. We had an excellent group of servers and all of our needs were anticipated and met before we even had to ask. The manager was cordial and personable. We felt very welcomed and left completely satisfied."

  • "The first image that comes to mind from our experience at Town Hall is the stack of 10 smoked spare ribs presented log cabin style on the plate. The structure, an architect's dream; the food, a foodie's delight. Our server was adept at steering us away from choices that might make us unhappy later. The first bourbon drink on the menu mentioned a "bacon infusion" which would interest just about anyone but our server let us know that the overall drink might be too heavy for the overall dinner. He steered us towards a vodka drink laced with cucumbers that proved to be a better choice in hot weather. This red brick anomaly sits on a block full of current and future skyscrapers. You feel very insulated from the march of progress outside."
