Diner Reviews
  • "It feels like walking into history when you descend the short steps into Tout Va Bien. The food is delicious and the sevice is excellent. Lunch is a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. The whole experience is tres bien!"

  • "I have been to this restaurant twice and both times really enjoyed my experience. The staff is very friendly, engaging and service oriented. It is a nice find in that part of NYC - feels like a little neighborhood restaurant rather than something you find mid-town."

  • "been coming here for years -- ideal for pretheater, but even better for lingering, as we did in the middle of last week. most times it's quite packed and festive; this time it was quiet and most enjoyable for the lack of a rush. menu is stocked with favorites, and the service was quite attentive."

  • "The "Broadway Special" on the dinner menu was perfect for my friend and I who were, indeed, off to see Les Mis (we HAD to go to a French place before, Am I right?!). It's a great Pre-Fix dinner for a great price. You can't beat it really. For anyone off to a show in the theater area, which, let's face it, can be underwhelming in the food category, this is a great place to have a quality dining experience before a magical evening of Broadway!"

  • "Tout Va Bien has been a family favorite with me for decades. It is perfect for pre or apre theater or a romantic rendezvous. If you come back only once or twice, the friendly owners and staff remember you and treat you like an old friend. The classic French cooking is reliable and always everything it should be. The convivial ambience, partly due to the tight seating, lends itself to conversation and the happy meeting of friends, new and old. This is a tranche de vie of old Manhattan and one can easily slip back into the days of Mad Men, when New York had sophisticated adult night life. I love it here!"

  • "Great bargain, prix-fix theate menu for food that is consistently good. Diniing room is alway full of in town and from out of town French speaking natives. A good sign. The head waitres Vivienne is a gem, very accomodating and fun to chat with."

  • "convenient to many Broadway plays. prix-fixe pretheatre dinner, I had the pate, coq au vin and mousse. No bad, not excellent"

  • "We had the pre theater fixed price menu and it was wonderful with very large portions. A leisurely meal so give yourself time if going to a play"

  • "You can not go wrong dining at Tout Va Bien. The service is so incredibly energetic and friendly. The food is fabulous and tasty with generous portions. The atmosphere is so festive and fun. Every time that I bring friends to Tout Va Bien, it becomes their new favorite restaurant as well. Can't recommend it with more enthusiasm!"

  • "We enjoyed a very tasty traditional French dinner in an unusually friendly atmosphere. It felt more like a community gathering than the traditional formalism of French dining. It's on our short list of places worth revisiting on future trips."

  • "This restaurant is well past it's prime. Food was better than haughty service"

  • "Food was excellent, Way too under staffed. Long wait for food. Be careful. We were overcharged for several items. Same happened to party sitting next to us. We probably won't go back because of the overcharging errors."

  • "Great restaurant down the street from theatres. Very friendly, accommodating staff, service and food is excellent."

  • "A little "hole in the wall" recommended by a friend from NY: small French restaurant w/charming atmosphere, quiet vibe and the most genuinely kind & attentive staff. Easy to fall into snippets of conversation w/your neighbor (seating is tight) & even venture a little French from the depths of your hs memory. We had: Shrimp scampi (they accommodated my request for pasta instead of rice) and Coq au Vin. Perhaps a bit heavier than I prefer, but it really didn't matter. THE BEST cup of French brewed COFFEE w/creme brulee for dessert. A bowl of Sangria on the house as the final touch-I guess I had never had the real thing-this was deeply flavored w/earthy body-just delightful. J'adore TOUT VA BIEN and will return for more when next in NYC!!"

  • "I've been coming here for the last 7 years. I ordered the omelet (the only thing I ever order) and the lady running the floor says they haven't served the omelet in 2 yrs! What?!! I told her I was here just last month and a few months before that and several times in the last 2 years - I've always had the omelet. It was a pointless discussion because she knew she was correct, which she was not. Had the lamb instead; it was cooked as ordered, but not flavorful. I was so taken aback by the interaction to bother with dessert. Service was spotty as always. Sad to say, but that was my last visit to Tout Va Bien."

  • "Used to be good - bartender shook martini all over floor, second attempt poured it all over the bar. Salad was dead greens with yelliowy//pink horrible tomato with no dressing, pate was crumbly and greasy at the same time and finally the mussels were no more than 1/2 inch long and very skinny - certainly not PEI quality. Very sad. I will not return. Highlight of evening were three birthdays where they dim the lights and all are asked to sing HB. Tres tacky - I don't think the tourists were enjoying their time as well. ."

  • "This is probably the most authentic French restaurant that I've been to in the United States. Even the customers spoke French. It was a little cramped so you should make a reservation. For me, this restaurant is conveniently located since it is in the area where I spend the most time on a trip to New York City."

  • "I was not overwhelmed by the food. A frenetic pace set by the waitpersons. Pre-theater on a Saturday is not a good way to judge a restaurant, but I was not fond of the food, nor were my dining companions."

  • "Charming cozy restaurant with excellent service. The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Although the menu is not expansive, they have some winners. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the Coq Au Vin, and I had an exquisite broiled grouper. We will definitely be back and we heartily recommend Tout Va Bien."

  • "I've been going to Tout Va Bien for many years and now that I don't live in NYC anymore, when I come back to town I always enjoy returning there. The staff is always friendly and makes you feel as if you have come home. The food is classic French, such as coq au vin, beef boeuf bourguignon and other classics that I love to eat, but would never make at home. The ambiance is cozy and charming."

  • "A wide range of French specialties is complemented by the prix fixe pre-theatre menu, from which we chose Beef Bourguignon and Salmon Provenciale. These choices included salad and dessert. The atmosphere was pleasant and the customers a mix of leisurely diners and and those headed for the theatre. All in all a comfortable respite from the cold night which transported us to a touch of France."

  • "A traditional French bistro with a long history. The dishes are tasty, but be prepared for very a limited selection of old classics (e.g., Sole Meuniere, Escargots, Coq au Vin, onion soup), plus a short list of daily specials, which are again simple and traditional. Cozy atmosphere and friendly service."

  • "A great find! So much like being in a Paris cafe. The food was wonderful and the wait staff was the best. We were going to a play afterward but highly recommend it as an evening in itself. We'll be back soon."

  • "Restaurant was quiet when we arrived but filled up. Waitress was very pleasant, got us out the door on time and happy. We had the pre-fixe menu, mussels and escargot, then beef burgundy and hanger steak, creme brulee, chocolate mousse, and tarte tatin for desert. All very good, tarte tatin was best desert (mine.) We would go back. All in all, a pleasant, tasty low stress meal!"

  • "Hi: I'm a regular (when in NYC from PA) and always enjoy visiting TVaB. Had a smoked duck appetizer special that was excellent. Then tried the calves' liver for first time--not so special and won't have it again (just basically the same "liver and onions" that my grandma made back in the south). But always an enjoyable dining experience."

  • "Actually, the experience was better than expected Prime location in the theatre district is ideal, and the host is insistent you check the curtain time so you have ample time to dine leisurely. The pre theatre prix fixe dinner options are varied and a great value. True, the place is a little worn around the edges, but the welcoming host wins you over with her wit and generous extras The food does not disappoint with all the French bistro favorites, with the exception of cassoulet!!"

  • "This charming "old-school French" bistro hasn't changed in decades, thank God. It's increasingly hard to find tripe or kidneys with mustard sauce these days, let alone Tete de Veau! To quote SNL's Stefan: "this place still has it all," plus some of the best French fries this side of Paris. The ladies in the dining room are really French, indulge my high-school version of their language and aim to please. I love the place. I can even overlook such egregious mistakes as "plastic" tomatoes garnishing otherwise excellent pâte in January. It's a refreshing change to the "hip" scene and romantic spot for a date, when what you care about IS your date (& la Cuisine de la Grand Mere). Stick to the basics & if you love "les Abats" you can't go wrong!"

  • "My family had been planning a visit to New York for some time, and we decided to return to this famous New York French bistro for après or avant theatre dining and we were more charmed than ever. We made reservations through the trusty Open Table online service and heard back quickly that our reservations were confirmed. If you are looking for a very special night out in the theatre district in New York this is your spot. Speak French even if you only know a few words, and order from the specialty menu if you can. Everything was scrumptious including the desserts, and their traditional Sangria served at the end of your dining experience will send you out into the magical New York night in a mood only Tout Va Bien can provide. Five Stars!"

  • "They have a "C" rating from the Board of Health. Still went in, but a server walked by with a plate of mussels and they smelled old. We left."

  • "This was our first time to this restaurant and we had a great experience. It felt like a cozy neighborhood bistro, food was really good, service was great, very friendly and knowledgeable, and had wonderful interactions with other patrons. My husband had their bouillabaisse and I had the sole meuniere, both were excellent. After dinner they brought a large bowl of sangria which was a surprise and absolutely delicious- -a great ending to a really good and fun evening for us. While there, I noticed there were also two groups of 6-8 people as well as couples having a more intimate dining experience, so kudos to the restaurant that it seems to easily accommodate a variety."

  • "Tout Va Bien is like a little French bistro in Paris. Not presumptuous at all. The staff was extremely helpful and welcoming. The prices were quite reasonable and the food was very good. Will definitely go back."

  • "Four friends went for a pre-show dinner. The service was very warm and friendly. One ofs have allergies and the options were discussed at length with our server, and a good suggestion made. Even tough the sauce was a problem, and the plate was exchanged quickly and with a broad smile. The food was very good."

  • "Entrance is a few steps below street level. Tables in dining room covered with red checkered tablecloths. Numerous specials; good wine. Generous portions. Reasonable (for NYC) prices. Has an older, more intimate, cozy look to it and can't wait to return. Sweetbreads were on the menu (which I haven't had for years) and they were wonderful. Don't come here if you are looking for health food."
