Diner Reviews
  • "We were there for a pre-theater dinner so came early and needed to be out in time. The staff was welcoming and pleasant. The anchovy salad was plentiful and delicious. We each had one of the seafood spiels. The mixed grill was cooked to perfection- not overcooked, full of flavor, fresh as possible. Also, each dish had many colorful grilled veggies- a perfect dish for a dieter. (But the dessert was fine, too)"

  • "Overall good experience. Noise level a bit high as room filled but conversation remained possible. Menu and nightly specials offered many appealing choices. Enjoyed each course from appetizer to dessert. Would definitely return."

  • "There were six of us with different pocketbooks and tastes and all of us had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The service was excellent and the menu varied enough to please everyone. My Italian is non-existent but the spaghetti with seafood was excellent, actually full of seafood, salmon with seafood also great; actually all our dishes were beautifully presented and cooked! The restaurant was also able to cook dishes with slight adjustments without difficulty - half orders of pasta, adding an ingredient, etc."

  • "We had lunch at Toscano on a Sunday, the perfect spot for watching the walkers in the Harvard Square area. We requested a window seat, and it was provided. The food is more than acceptable, in fact very respectable indeed for a US Italian restaurant. My first course of mussels in broth was excellent. The mussels were small and tender, not like the oversized rubbery things other restaurants serve. My main course of linguine alle vongole came with the clams in their shells. Very well prepared, the pasta truly al dente. My companions all enjoyed their choices. As usual, the service was obliging and friendly. This restaurant is highly recommended for those seeking a good meal near Harvard Square."

  • "1. This time we were seated at a location that was too noisy. 2. When I made the reservation I let the restaurant know we were celebrating 2 birthdays - the restaurant made no mention of that during the meal 3. The food was ok, but not as wonderful as the last time we came. Appetizers were too large."

  • "This was my fourth wonderful visit to Toscano Harvard Square and I can't wait to return. The restaurant excels on so many levels. First of all, it is clear that the management and staff take good service seriously. This is really a well-run place. Everyone is extremely professional, courteous, and attentive. When courses arrive at the table, they are delivered to the appropriate person smoothly and unobtrusively--without the need to quiz individual diners again about what they did or did not order. I find this refreshing. Now, on to the food! All of the menu items I've tried have been well-prepared and of excellent quality. The pepper-crusted sirloin, in particular, is superb. Portion sizes are generous, as are individual wine pours."

  • "Our dinners were among the best we have ever eaten. Subtle and sophisticated, creative and well balanced. Understandably, very popular even late on a weeknight. Service was everything you would want and nothing you wouldn't. But, be prepared to spend and dinning room with bar tends to be loud with irritating music. If you love Harvard Square, this is the place for you."

  • "I had a dinner with three friends on a Sunday night. This was my second time. The first time was last May when I had lunch with a group of 10 friends. The noise level was high and it was quite difficult to have a conversation. Most dishes are quite inexpensive. We ordered an appetizer, a salad, four entrees, and three desserts to share. The food tasted okay and needed an improvement. They weren't bad, but not impressive. The service was good and attentive. I'd recommend this restaurant for lunch if one happens to be in the neighborhood, but not for dinner."

  • "It was a Friday lunch to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had a noon reservation and are glad we did because the restaurant filled up fast. Although it was a full house, it was not noisy at all and we had easy conversation. The food was delicious - fresh and very good portions from the salads to the dessert. Given it was lent, we had two fish entrees (swordfish and salmon) that were well prepared and again fresh! Both the arugula salad and caesar salad were yummy. We shared two desserts and the waiter even added a candle to one without us asking as a nice gesture. All of us were impressed and vowed to come back for dinner sometime soon."

  • "Food was delicious and the service was impeccable We had a great lunch. The noise level was high, but everyone was enjoying the lunch and chatting so I think that contributed to the level. We would go back again."

  • "I now have eaten here 4 times (in 6 weeks). This is a find. It truly is like eating at a restaurant in Toscani. We are foodies and very particular on what we expect from an eatery.. Not only do they fit the bill on on all levels, they also are inexpensive for the quality and volume of food they serve. Whatever you do, don't even consider not ordering dessert. For an Italian restaurant they are spectacular and unique. enjoy"

  • "Bingo on the location and comfortable seating. Loved the decor. Terrific, highly attentive and coordinated staff. The food was tasty and portions generous for prix fixe. My salmon appetizer was outstanding, my beef solidly executed, and my dessert densely delicious. Would consider returning with a similar-aged friend next time instead of older family member to enjoy hipper vibe."

  • "I took advantage of Dining Out in Boston and had a wonderful lunch at Toscano's in Harvard Square. The Dining Out in Boston menu was superb, with a good number of options. I had the Caesar salad, that had beautiful pieces of paremesan on top and throughout, a perfectly-cooked grilled salmon salmon with spinach, and the tiramiu, that was delivered in a champagne glass and had the right balance of espresso, marscapone cheese and cocoa. The restaurant is beautiful, while a bit small with many tables you still felt like you could have a sense of privacy. A real winner; I'll be back soon!"

  • "Nice place for a meal if u r meeting in HSq. Admittedly ate off restaurant week menu, so I give them the benefit of the doubt. Steak was not great - cooked to proper doneness, but still not tender and tasteless. One of my table mates had the same opinion. Tiramisu was wierd - scooped up like ice cream and served in a huge martini glass. Not bad, but the food is better at my house."

  • "This was our first time at their Harvard Square location and it is one of the most beautiful dining rooms in the Boston area. They have an extensive wine list and for $10 I received a quartino of a Tuscan Montepulciano. My husband had a lovely Tuscan white also in the $9 range. I started with the smoked salmon which was served with lemon and crostini. It was fresh and delicious. My husband had the Caprice salad which came with 3 large slices of beefsteak tomatoes and a large piece of fresh mozzerella. Our entrees were nice portions of chicken parm and veal scallopini. We finished with their lemon sorbet and blueberry tart which were both excellent. Our server, Robinson, was very friendly and professional and took good care of us."

  • "daughter and I enjoyed Toscano's for lunch during Restaurant Week. Came just after a busy lunch hour. Food was spot on. Dessert too sweet for my tastes, but most Americans would find it fine. Our waiter was excellent and provided just the right amount of service and being away. Check it out!"

  • "Toscano promised more than it delivered. The food was not authentic Italian, and without subtlety -- a cprese with a tasteless beefsteak tomato, a large Catarina salad with very strong (too strong) anchovy and vinegar taste, a pesto pasta with very little flavor and thick papardelle with an undistinguished duck cream sauce. It was a busy Saturday night -- noisy, and we guessed the kitchen might have been overwhelmed. But it was a costly mistake on our part."

  • "My friends and I were treated extremely well by our wonderful waiter. He was attentive without hovering, paced the meal well. Gave us service that I personally have seldom enjoyed. The food was well prepared and portion was ample. Do really like the space, cozy but yet spacious. Will go again for the lovely service and food."

  • "All of the food was excellent, EXCEPT for those of us who ordered the steak - which was quite tough. Stick with the Italian dishes."

  • "Tocano is a well located restaurant in Harvard Square. Request a table in the main room. My pasta with porchini mushrooms was exceptionally good. I tried the 3 course menu which was $33.00 per person. 2nd course was veal in a lemon sauce and the veal was very tender. My husband had the Veal Milanese but thought the veal should have had more seasoning. Wine was excellent and not too expensive. We enjoyed the charming atmosphere and appreciated the moderate noise level. Try it and you won't be disappointed."

  • "My friend and I went there for restaurant week. Both food and service were great. I recommend trying their Salmone Affumicato for appetizer and tiramisu for dessert. The waiter was very attentive during our time there."

  • "One gets the impression that the wait staff is deemed most important at Toscano. Helpful but not intrusive, professional. The food is excellent, particularly for the price I have eaten at other restaurants nearby where the price is comparable but the food and service were just so-so. Be sure to make a reservation for important events; it's popular."

  • "First time there. Great lunch! Fantastic mushroom/tomato pasta sauce. We were there before the A.R.T. matinee. I would go again. Service was very attentive - in the best of ways! High energy staff."

  • "I was here earlier this evening with my wife and two friends of ours. My impression was that the portions are quite generous but the taste of the food itself is OK and could use a LOT more seasoning. Among its strengths, its service is very good. The location of the restaurant is a plus too. It is located conveniently in Harvard Square but its location on Brattle Street ensures that it is a little less crazy than some of the other places in the area. Considering the portion sizes, its ambiance, and its location, I would characterize this as a good value-for-your-money place. The total food bill for the four of us with 1 order from the restaurant week menu ($33), 3 entrees, plus a bottle of wine came to about $125-very reasonable as such."

  • "Service was super. My wife was stuck in traffic, arrived an hour late, and yet I was not pressured about time. Waiter put in the order for dinner when I knew she was near, and the timing was then perfect. I should mention that the food was excellent as well. We were pressed for time because of theater tickets at ART, but the restaurant and the crew did everything they could short of fixing the traffic jam off the Mass Pike Allston-Brighton exit (which would have been a miracle!). Good place. I'm now a true fan."

  • "Toscano scores well on many points: pleasing atmosphere (if a bit loud), attentive service, good wines, interesting menu. Execution doesn't always live up to the promise, however: neither of the seafood appetizers (grilled calamari, grilled shrimp) seemed optimally fresh, and while the mushroom risotto tasted fine indeed, as did the sauce in the rigatoni norcina, the pasta itself seemed re-heated rather than freshly cooked. But we hit it rather late in the evening, and it may do better slightly earlier; we shall no doubt give it another shot."

  • "The selection and preparation far exceeds your "average" Italian restaurant. The white table cloths immediately give the impression that you can expect good service and good food. Toscano does not disappoint."

  • "Have always enjoyed Toscano on Charles St. Boston. Their fairly new restaurant in Harvard SQ. is a bit brighter and more open. We had an outstanding lunch here. Prices are reasonable for this part of the world."

  • "Northern Italian food, fresh and delicious, served on white tablecloths by friendly, attentive servers. The menu offers a good balance between Tuscan comfort food (great risotto and fish stew) and less calorific but still inventive salads. The view of busy Brattle Street never gets old, so I always ask for one of the tables up front by the windows. Looking forward to spring/summer, when those big windows are open to the fresh air outdoors. Always a pleasure to come here, to eat so well, and to be treated with such friendly consideration. If you like lemon drop martinis, theirs is the best! I also recommend Italian grillo white wine by the (large!) glass."

  • "This will, as stated, be brief. Food and ambience is very good. Price is quite expensive, too expensive for what you're getting. That said, it's a good OCCASIONAL treat."

  • "This was my first time at this restaurant. I love Italian food so I was very excited to try. Food was ok but the attitude of the waiters were very rude. They also lost my items and we had to wait 20 min for them to find them. The way that they deal with the issue was not professional. Three different waiters came and ask me the problem. I had to explain the problem again and again. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant at all. So far, worst experience for this type of category."

  • "Waitstaff was extremely helpful & attentive. Four of us were very pleased with everything from apps to desserts! Entrees were linguini & shrimp with pesto, seafood dish (both were specials), ravioli gambari & funghi dibosco pizza ; flavors were delightful, serving size was perfect, Save room for dessert!"
