Diner Reviews
  • "I think Tosca is a Washington gem. The service and food are excellent, always. The waiters never miss a trick and the staff are warm and friendly. The last time we went, I asked if they would be able to serve us dover sole. They made a special effort to accommodate the request by ordering it from their supplier even tho they had not planned to have it on the menu that evening. And it was delicious! Lovely restaurant all the way around....and underrated."

  • "Food and service were above average. I had the salmon and it was done perfectly. My friends had steak and I was told it was exceptional and cooked perfectly to order. Would come again."

  • "Tosca gave us a great meal. Service was attentive and prompt. The food was inventive and excellently prepared. The restaurant was stylish without being overpowering"

  • "For foodies. Food prepared well, presented well with impeccable service. Always first class dining. Will be back for next celebration"

  • "I was expecting something great from this restaurant, but it was very average and overpriced. I want to blame the dishes I picked, but when paying such hefty prices I believe everything should taste fabulous. The staff was polite, but not very engaging. Overpriced and mediocre food."

  • "We love this restaurant and need to start going more often. Dinner was amazing (squash blossom and salad appetisers; duck ravioli, grilled octopus and other fish for the mains). The wine list is well-curated at all price points, and the service is always personal without being too much. Husband and I each got a birthday tiramisu which gave us plenty to share with the table. my one quibble is that they charge for valet parking. yes, it;s downtown, but still, it's the only jarring note in an otherwise perfect experience."

  • "We have enjoyed this "early bird" menu many times and while there have been subtle downgrades (you no longer get an amuse bouche, the pork tenderloin entree no longer has its signature mushroom crust, an entree of lamb meatballs is, well, just a couple of meatballs) it's still a good experience. What keeps us coming back is the service and ambience. Yes, you can actually have a conversation without shouting at one another across the table."

  • "There is NO BETTER restaurant in Wash DC. All special occasions deserve Tosca. The food is always wonderful -- honestly exceeds in every way. Service is outstanding. Entire experience is WOW!"

  • "Tosca Ristorante is classic. Welcoming hostesses... Elegant decor ... Tables far enough apart that you can talk ... And the food was delicious! The menu offers a nice selection of Northern Italian dishes. My swordfish over grilled peaches and plums with a pesto garnish was so flavorful. The waiter was very helpful and made a great wine suggestion. Next time we're in DC we'll be back."

  • "Hard to decide whether the service or the food wins out here... but probably the food. I had a half order to ravioli "off the menu" that was fantastic and lamb chops that could not have been prepared more perfectly. My wife had corn chowder and a mushroom risotto that was probably the best I've ever tasted. (YES... we ate off each others plates) Ranks at the top of my personal list among Grammercy Tavern in New York, Prime 112 in Miami and Boulevard in San Francisco. HIGHLY recommend."

  • "July 3rd Enjoyed the food, had an issues with the Waiter, seemed insistent upon helping select a wine, we said we are "Ok", he said I'm just trying to do my job. My friend ordered Ravioli with Lobster, was served and my friend ask for parmesan and the waiter GASP and said you're stabbing me in the heart to see that....do you know how that makes your customers feel? I noticed other staff members listening to his comments and most likely were thinking is this guy for real. Turns out this waiter is not Italian and thinks he's the food guru and makes you feel bad based on what you eat and how you eat it. My friend finished his dish before I did and waiter said "Ah your friend knows how to savor his dish", another offensive remark."

  • "We've been dining at Tosca since it opened, and we eat there once or twice a year because it is a sure-thing for a great evening of fine dining. The pastas are always excellent. The fish is always fresh, tasty and well prepared. Meats are exquisite. Cocktails and wines are well executed and well curated. Waiters are attentive yet unobtrusive. Tosca is always a winner in our experience. One added fun thing is there are often recognizable political and media folks dining here as well, not that that really matters, but it's a bit of fun."

  • "My husband and I visited Tosca on a Friday evening as part of a city getaway. The food was fantastic, the wine list was incredible and the ambiance was lovely. We enjoyed it so much, we are already planning a return visit. If you haven't eaten here - try it. You won't be disappointed."

  • "We had a wonderful evening eating at Tosca. First our waitperson, Grace, was outstanding! My husband ordered the soft shell crab app and loved it. I ordered the arugula salad with octopus and it was delicious. I had the simply prepared red snapper which was fantastic and my husband had the fettuccine with venison ragu that he said was delish. We ended with sorbet and berries and gelato and berries which were all a perfect ending. I would highly recommend Tosca."

  • "I've always had a good meal at Tosca, but I always leave feeling like it makes itself out to be more than it holds itself out to be. Certainly, 5 stars for ambience, with the white-jacketed servers, dim lighting, and white tablecloths. But $30 for 8 ravioli? Appetizers in the $15-25 range? $13 small mixed salads? I may come here on an expense account, but not sure if I'd come on my own dime."

  • "Lovely dining experience. The server worked with us to craft a perfect meal of caprese, pasta, and fish with a perfectly matched wine."

  • "Best restaurant in DC! Food was amazing and service just perfect!"
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "Main course = very small portion and way overpriced considering the quality and quantity. The food was good, but not extraordinary in relation to other restaurants with similar overhead costs and location. Nice ambiance and the service was great. Food though was average."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "We reserved the chef's table for an anniversary celebration and every one of the eight courses was phenomenal. Whether it was the lobster ravioli, the antelope pappardelle or the lamb chop, Chef Massimo's creativity and love of food was evident. In addition to the incredible meal, the service was top notch and the ambiance was very comforting. If you want an unforgettable Italian experience in DC, Tosca is the place to go!"

  • "I was very delighted in having such an elegant dining experience prior to going to the theatre. A lot of pre-theatre meals feel rushed but not at Tosca. The menu selections were exceptional and were a gourmand's paradise. The staff were very attentive and worked well with each other in making sure that each detail was meticulously taken care of. I am eagerly anticipating another evening there. Valet parking was was an ease and very reasonably priced. You can't go wrong with choosing Tosca for an evening out and for any reason from business, special occasion, pre-theatre or romance. "

  • "A superb restaurant for non-red sauce Italian cuisine, delicately prepared, excellently plated, skillfully served. Warm, friendly servers; outstanding wine list. It is our goto restaurant every time we are in D.C. The chefs, executive chef Massimo and sous chef Riccardo, are creative and skilled. The owner, Paolo, is attentive and caring. The maître, Tommaso, oversees everything to make sure it all goes smoothly for the guests. The servers, Pavel and Milton, are friendly and remember their customers. We can't speak too highly of Tosca, ordinary praise does not do it justice!"

  • "The emphasis is on classic Italian, not Italo-American, no heavy tomatoe sauces. A wonderfully manageable menu of well prepared dishes using seasonal goodies, fresh fish and fresh veggies. Ideal for foodies like us. An outstanding selection of wines with a good range of prices to suit any pocket and pallette. The service is exceptional, the maitre (Tommaso) makes sure everything is running smoothly with no glitches. Portions are very generous, not the recent pseudo-Asian bite sized portions; desserts are super. WunderChef Massimo was unavailable at this visit since he was home with his wife and brand new baby Lorenzo, but the kitchen did him proud!"

  • "We had a lovely little nook in the restaurant which was wonderful or talking. We ate for two and three-quarter hours. The waiters were great. We had one six course tasting dinner and plus one main course for two people. The waiters served brought plates for both of us during the six courses and served the extra main course with the six course meal at the proper time. We had a bottle of red wine from a large wine list. It was my birthday and I was served a delicious desert with a candle compliments of the house."

  • "Impeccable Service, Great food, everything you want in a restaurant. The only reason its 4 star instead of 5 was the cost of the meal, we felt it was a bit pricey. That would be the only thing preventing us from naming it as a favorite. "

  • "Been to tosca's many times over many years. Remarkably consistent. Always great food and great service. Feels like we're in Europe. Among the best restaurants in DC. Only complaint is the valet parking. Wasn't there when we showed up for our 5:30 reservation. Don't mean he was parking another car, he wasn't there. Not the first time this has happened and parking in downtown DC isn't easy."

  • "We've been many times--our favorite Italian restaurant in DC. This visit was mildly disappointing. We did the pre-theater menu. My wife had the Insalata di Radicchio, which was excellent, although she get one stale walnut. I had the Cacio e Pepe, which was quite disappointing. There was no pepper taste whatsoever, and the pasta was way overcooked. We both had the Pappardelle as our main course, even though it's on the appetizer list. Excellent flavor, but, once again, the pasta was not al dente, it was overcooked--inexcusable for a first-class Italian restaurant. For dessert, we both had the Tortino al Cioccolato, which was superb. The warm chocolate center was intensely chocolaty. We had a nice wine--Elena Walch Pinot Grigio."

  • "The first encounter with this restaurant is a bit disconcerting - there is no menu posted outside and blinds obscure the interior from the street. Once inside this is a great restaurant. It has an array of tables with crisp white table cloths and the menu provides a good range of food, not just Italian. There is an extensive wine list. Particularly recommended is the cheese board especially if you order the wine recommended with it - delicious. The pricing is quite high but reflects the excellence of the cooking. A great dining experience for a special occasion."

  • "Our anniversary was more special because we dined here. Arrived early. Sat at bar where served not only our drinks but almonds, bread and a salami. Seated in area we requested. Our waitress, Luigia, was outstanding. Every course was so tasty- stuffed zucchini blossoms, veal chop w/Barolo wine sauce, venison w/ mushrooms and pecans. Absolutely loved the carrot pappardelle w/ rabbit ragu. Never rushed, reminiscent of dining in Italy. Offer wines by half bottle, glass, bottle- great selection, good price ranges. Finished meal w/ house specialty- tiramisu. The restaurant complimentary sent it over for our anniversary."

  • "The service and the interior of the restaurant is among the best of the best. My risotto was the best I have had outside of Italy, but a very small portion and pricey. "
